God of War III will end the trilogy but franchise will continue

January 19, 2010

God of War III will end the trilogy but franchise will continue With God of War III right around the corner Sony is making sure that this third game in the trilogy will end with a bang. However, according to Sony, God of War III will not be the end for the franchise as there are more titles after it.

In an interesting interview with John Hight, director of product development at Sony Santa Monica with Gamervision, he talked a little about GOW III and the future of the franchise. He gave some interesting info as to the development effort required working on the PS3.

The Sony Santa Monica team bloomed from 60 staff members working on the GOW 2 to three times the size just for GOW III. Another interesting comment he made was about the franchise. GOW III will tie up everything as part of the trilogy. Hight also confirmed that the franchise will continue after GOW III, but the studio will think very carefully on how to continue the franchise going forward.

Wish them the best of luck since GOWII i knew it was a trilogy.

“The Sony Santa Monica team bloomed from 60 staff members working on the GOW 2 to three times the size just for GOW III.”

Well just like Kanye West blames it on the alcohol Sony can blame it on the Cell.

“Hight also confirmed that the franchise will continue after GOW III, but the studio will think very carefully on how to continue the franchise going forward.”

I can’t believe that have not done this already. So basically the next game is in 5 years!!

  3. Ivan_PSP:

    No sense moving on…

  4. phranctoast:

    @CAD,

or maybe because it’s “bigger, better and more bad ass.”

“I can’t believe that have not done this already. So basically the next game is in 5 years!!”

Probably the story. If you’ve been paying attention, if the story ends like we think it will they’ll have to do prequels.

Maybe they’ll find another way of utilizing the threads of fate.

There was a recent lift on media that was shown a month ago. It’s been all over the net lately

    h**p://ps3.ign.com/articles/106/1061530p1.html

Joystiq said Dantes inferno looks last gen in comparison.

Maybe Ivan is right and the game will be released at 1080p 60fps.

  5. Roca.:

“Maybe they’ll find another way of utilizing the threads of fate”

that’s a cool idea..but idk I have the feeling that after Kratos is done killing gods, he will start slaying Titans.

  6. SW:

I have a feeling they’re all dead at the end of this game, hence the reason why no one worships Greek gods anymore ;)

Oh and CAD makes me giggle with his trollishness (i made that word up!..)

  7. Ivan_PSP:

Well God of War III official native resolution will be 720p with 1080p support. I got that from the PlayStation blog %100 real. The new 1080p screens they got are amazing go look at them.

  8. oldschool1987:

Let CAD the Troll, troll away lol. The fact is this game looks fucking amazing and to deny that proves your a fanboy and don’t like games based on how they look but by what console they are on.

  9. twilight:

This will be another killer release from Sony.

  10. Roca.:

    oldschool,
can you check my questions in the “MW2 vs Avatar” article. maybe you can help

  11. Roca.:

I know that Kratos brother will appear in GoW3 since the developer wanted everybody to watch the video about what happened to Kratos brother. they put so much emphasis on it that you will get a “Gold trophy” just for watching it

  12. CON:

Good game. Deserves more titles on merit alone. But didn’t PS3 fanboys throw mud at Halo for making Reach? Seems a bit of a paradox.

  13. phranctoast:

    @CON

I’d disagree when talking about the God of War franchise. There has been 4 games total spanning over three platforms.

Maybe if you want to say Ratchet and Clank, that would provide a better talking point. Even then, if you count Reach, there will be 3 Halo games in two years.

  14. CON:

Okay but I would only count Halo 3 as the last true game. ODST was really only the map packs with a few single player levels thrown in and the other C&C style one although in the Halo universe was more of a novelty.

My point was if a game is good. It sells well. Consumers want more. Why shouldn’t they make more?

  15. Roca.:

4 Halo games + 1 Halo Movie this gen vs 1 God of War game this gem? the comparassion is a joke IMO

  16. CON:

Halo 3 was the end of the trilogy. Reach is the next true Halo game. Interesting that you consider ODST as a game when it suits you Roca. So it’s not an expansion anymore?

  17. Roca.:

    @CON

Interesting that you consider ODST as a expansion when it suits you CON. So it’s not an game anymore?

  18. CON:

When did I ever say it was? Feel free to quote me.

  19. ncaissie:

God of war = Gaming done right

  20. ncaissie:

    Halo = Multiplayer done right

  21. Roca.:

the xbot gang were arguing that the game was a full retail game with a full fledge single player campaign.

soo what is OSDT to you? a game or a $60 expansion pack?

  22. phranctoast:

“When did I ever say it was? Feel free to quote me.”

“ODST was really only the map packs with a few single player levels thrown in and the other C&C style one although in the Halo universe was more of a novelty.”

Maybe not an exact quote, but the intent was there. It sounds to me like your referencing an expansion pack.

  23. CON:

Roca if you can bring your tiny little mind to analyse what I have posted in this it’s article it’s pretty clear what my opinion is. Stop coming across as being so immature all the time. I have not said a bad word about GOW in this article just making the point that they are now making more games after the trilogy ps3 fans shouldn’t be so quick to throw mud at other companies like bungie

  24. CON:

    @phrac

Thanks for the quote. Roca asked me if I thought it wasn’t a game. Fuck sake the attention span in these articles really riles me sometimes.

  25. Roca.:

I havent said anything bad about Halo…have I? you were the one comparing the two games not me…

  26. CON:

“I havent said anything bad about Halo…have I?”

    Quote of the week

  27. phranctoast:

Although, it does remind me that Bungie won’t be the developers of anymore Halo games after Reach.

Any Halo lovers worried about this?

  28. Roca.:

good to know we have the same opinion on the game ;)

  29. Akaro:

How could the franchise continue? Another mythology perhaps? Or doing the “what ifs” of the Greek Mithology?

I don´t remember exactly but I think Apollo said in the Iliad that if Zeus had a son with Achilles´ mother, this child would be more powerful than Zeus himself and overthrow him.

Also I think there are bits where gods talk about “Fate” as an all powerful entity that even all Olympus couldn´t oppose. However it is never clear if this was only figurative speech and I don´t remember which myth I read about that =S.

Those would be interesting bits for another installment. And yes there are always the Titans and the Primordials.

  30. CON:

Was always more of a gears man phrac so not all that bothered.

Akaro they will always think of something. Let’s hope they have a decent plot line unlike the gods in mortal kombat lol

  31. phranctoast:

    @Akaro

GOW2 and 3 are about the Titans (primordials).

    spolier***************************

By the end of the second game, Kratos has control over fate and goes back in time to before Zeus had the Titans banished to Tarterus. He brings them forward in time to the present time and GOW3 starts off with those titans climbing Mt. Olympus.

  32. phranctoast:

Kratos is also Zeus son, so that part of Iliad you referenced maybe being used as reference.

  33. Akaro:

Woah, didn´t know that. Sorry XD. Only played Chains of the Olympus.

But I think Primordials are different to Titans, has there been anything about Khaos or Khronos?

  34. Akaro:

    CON:

Yeah man, talk about something that feels like it was written 15 minutes before deadline.

  35. phranctoast:

I’m confused as to the difference as some Primordials are Titans.
There’s Cronos (sp) and he’s Zeus father. They go into how he ate all his children because an Oracle said one would grow up to overthrow him. Zeus’s mother had him eat a rock instead and Gaia took Zeus in. Zeus eventually riled up the Olympian gods against the Titans.
Greek Mythology and all part of the God of War story.

  36. Akaro:

Ok, thanks. Perhaps they really did take as much references as possible and they will try a new mythology and protagonist for the franchise.

  37. CAD:

    Trolling the Web

There are some individuals out there who don’t just enjoy winding up people on newsgroups and bulletin boards – it’s their sad lifestyle choice! Using every known disruptive trick in the book, these troublesome types don’t go out to the pub, meet members of the opposite sex or enjoy life. They spend their time hunched over their computers trolling.

Well I guess I don’t fit that category as I do have a life.

Don’t worry about all the Halo Haters. They hate because it’s successful. At the end of this year there will be two top grossing products. Halo Reach and Natal. Nothing Sony has can touch it.

  39. phranctoast:

“Nothing Sony has can touch it.”
except that little game that always manages to sell 9 million + units whenever a full release comes out.

idk if I would be placing Natal bets yet. Can we find something from a developer saying the latency isn’t a problem. It’s starting to look like the new sixaxis.

  40. ncaissie:

    LOL @Phranc.

  41. SW:

“Don’t worry about all the Halo Haters. They hate because it’s successful. At the end of this year there will be two top grossing products. Halo Reach and Natal. Nothing Sony has can touch it.”

You know, if you close you eyes, and think of an alternate reality, that seems like something a 360 loving Ivan would say word for word…

  42. CarlB:

“I’m confused as to the difference as some Primordials are Titans.”

Gaia (a Protogenoi/Primordial) was the mother of the Titans and Titanesses. Cronus (not to be confused with Chronos) is used in God of War. Cronus (father of Zeus with Rhea, a Titanesse, as the mother) is a Titan, and Chronos is the personification of time.

“the Protogenoi (pl.; Gr. Πρωτογενοι, sing. Protogenos) are a genealogy of Greek primordial gods, the name literally means First Born or Primeval and are a group of deities who were born in the beginning of our universe.”

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protogenoi

The Titans and Titanesses were children of the Protgenoi, more specifically, Ouranos (Uranus), the sky (or Heaven), and GAIA, the earth.

(The Ultimate Encyclopedia of Mythology, pg. 88)

“She also points out that the word “Titan” comes from the Greek τιτανος, signifying white earth, clay or gypsum, and that the Titans were “white clay men”, or men covered by white clay or gypsum dust in their rituals.” Sound familiar?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Titans

There are 11 primordial deities (Protogenoi), and 12 Titans (in Hesiod), with one (Chronos) or more overlapping depending upon the source or version of the myth(s). Only a relative few have been mentioned so far in the God of War series, so there is plenty of room for spin-offs after GoWIII. They have plenty of material to do work that took place before, or even after, what has been presented so far.

In other news, the new name for The Wand (Gem/Sphere) may not be Bruno(!), but rather Arc. It also may be delayed to just before Natal releases. Anybody else think GoWIII will have “Arc” compatibility?

  44. phranctoast:

Probably not arc capabilities but they’re already talking about 3D and GOW3.

  45. Akaro:

Well, looks like CarlB said it all.

  46. harry sachz:

Damn, I was rooting for Bruno.

  47. Ghost:

“I know that Kratos brother will appear in GoW3 since the developer wanted everybody to watch the video about what happened to Kratos brother. they put so much emphasis on it that you will get a “Gold trophy” just for watching it”

Well this was the direction (kratos and his weakling brother who got discarded) Jaffe was going to take the story in GOW2 if he would of had full controll of it. I remember him talking about it on my ps2 GOW version in the special features.

  48. harry sachz:

I am getting GOW3, but haven’t played the first 2. Will I need to play those to understand the story? Or will I be as confused as I am right now with MGS4?

  49. twilight:

    Cad,
Everyone does not hate Halo. Most of us just feel that Microsoft needs to focus on other new games besides Halo only.
As far as Natal goes, we don’t know how successful this is going to be yet. I’m glad that you are confident that Natal will be a success. I hope Natal does not diasappoint you or the other Xbox users.

  50. Ghost:

    @harry

honestly man you could prob pick up GOW3 and dive right into the game and have a blast. As far as the backstory goes I am sure they will have some kind of recaps to get the new players up to speed. But if you get the chance you really need to play the other 2 just for fun if your into those kind of games? They idea, story, and gameplay was pretty damn original when it came out. Hell don’t feel bad about MGS4 I had to sit and think about it during the movie long cut scenes and I’ve played them all lol.

  51. harry sachz:

    @ ghost,

I have given up on the MGS4 story, I am just skipping the cut scenes and getting back into the action.

As for the first 2 games, GOW Collection is not getting released here. The only way we can get them is by buying a $300 box set with all 3 games when GOW3 comes out at EB. May have to import.

  52. CarlB:

    @CAD,

“Most of us just feel that Microsoft needs to focus on other new games besides Halo only”

Because if we talked about Fable, Forza, Mass Effect, Crackdown, Alan Wake, L4D, Shadow Complex, GTA4 DLC, Bayonetta, and Splinter Cell it would just make us lose focus on bashing Microsoft and Halo only.

We don’t know how successful Natal will be, but it feels really good to bash on it too.

  53. SW:

You should really take it as a compliment to halo. Halo is always mentioned probably because most people probably see it as a bar to be surpassed (sales, gameplay, or both).

  54. oldschool1987:

Harry get GOW Collections mate, not for the story catch up but because your missing out big.

And don’t worry there’s no Nano-machines and Fox Die to confuse people. Basically Kratos was the God’s bitch and when he became a God himself Zeus (his daddy) killed him and took his powers. So Kratos is a bit miffed so he sides with the Titans and storms Mount Olympus (End of GOW2) That’s the basics. Oh and Kratos killed his wife and daughter after the God Areas tricked him, blah blah blah.

And who’s dissing Halo Reach!? I can’t wait for another Halo game! I just hope they update the graphics a tad.

  55. gunstar:

So Sony SM has thier work cut out for them for the next few years they might make one or two more games for the PS3s life cycle which is good value.

  56. phranctoast:

If you can somehow get the collection I would do so Harry.

  57. Roca.:

way to spoil two of the greatest games oldschool

  58. oldschool1987:

You’ve played it Roca so stop crying.

And it’s not exactly Lost or 24 with it’s elaborate plot, it’s simple and straight forward and twist free so why complain? If it was Battlestar I would understand but your crying over nothing.

If anyone else is upset then: ‘SPOILER ABOVE’ lol

  59. phranctoast:

I spoiled enough in this topic for all of us.

    Spolier*

Anyone else wonder why Kratos doesn’t save his family from their fate with the threads of fate? Revenge is cool and all, and there wouldn’t be a game without it but the whole premise of the first and part of Chains was to save your family.

  60. Roca.:

he will have to kill himself in order to save his family, right?

idk im just guessing…but that’s a good point though

  61. Liquid:

carlB is funny the way he winds up us playstationers and you xbots lol

  62. oldschool1987:

Well when he was turning the threads there was only o many events through time he could return to, it was on a loop remember, it went through the same events if you just kept turning it.

  63. phranctoast:

    @oldschool,

I don’t really recall and I haven’t beat GOW2 in the collection yet. I got held up on a freezing issue late in the game that got corrected a while ago, but I failed to notice as the “update” wasn’t mandatory until last week.

  64. CarlB:

Phranc, I had the same freezing issue a couple of times but managed to play through it okay.

OS, I agree. I think it’s safe to say the “spoiler alert” warning requirements for those games expired long ago ;)

@Harry, $300 sounds a bit steep. These games are definitely worth picking up though… is EBay an option for where you are?

  65. phranctoast:

It caught me at a place an I wasn’t able to get around it. GOW:C has no installed data to delete. I disabled my network and that worked one time, but then it froze somewhere else close in the vicinity. I used separate save files and it still happened in the same spot.

I figured I’d wait to see if a patch will address it and I’ve been waiting ever since. I’ve read that the new patch 3.15 alleviated some peoples issues so, when I get back to it I’ll give that a shot.

Now I’m right in the middle of Prototype with Assassins Creed 2 kicking the back of my feet in anticipation.

Still want to get Bayonetta and Darksiders but they look to be put on hold.

  66. ncaissie:

“OS, I agree. I think it’s safe to say the “spoiler alert” warning requirements for those games expired long ago ”
Not really, I still have to finish one and play through two. I don’t want to know what happens. I skipped his post when I read the spoiler alert.

  67. phranctoast:

    Well get to it ncassie!!!

Who else here hasn’t played the first two god of war games?

    -Harry
    -ncassie

  68. harry sachz:

I don’t know about Ebay… I think Play-Asia might be where I should get it.

Speaking of Play-Asia, after I bought my first game from there they kept sending me their weekly newsletter. My wife nearly had a heart attach when she saw an email from ‘Play Asia’. She thought I was subscribing to porn.

  69. harry sachz:

    er.. heart attack

  70. oldschool1987:

lol I am sorry about the spoilers peeps, I forgot the spoiler alert.

  71. phranctoast:

the first way was a lot sexier harry.

  72. ncaissie:

LOL @Harry, It does sound like porn.
