Sega Genesis emulator on Apple iPhone
There’s been talk of the iPhone becoming a robust little gaming platform in the future, as Apple makes everything mobile and the form of an app. And the first must-have gaming app is about to be released. It’s called Ultimate Genesis and is a virtual console officially sanctioned by Sega.
There have been a number of classic Sega games available for the iPhone for a while now. But they have been a little harsh on the hardware due to being an emulator and ROM rolled into one.
But things are changing.
Ultimate Genesis is a free app that acts as a virtual console and emulator for the Sega Genesis (known as the Mega Drive in Japan and Europe). It’s due to be released in February and will come with one game, Space Harrier II, bundled for free.
According to Gizmodo, the App Store’s new in-app purchasing system will allow for more games to be added at the user’s pleasure. Unfortunately, these games, which include Sonic The Hedgehog, Golden Axe, and Ecco The Dolphin, won’t be free, costing between $2.99 and $5.99.
Still, a bargain, and yet another reason to own an iPhone.

iPhone as a gaming console is a joke. Apple is trying to hard doing too many things. We all know the best handheld console is the PSP because it has the ability to play music,movies/videos/ view photos, web browser, awesome crystal clear graphics. Skype and a lot of great exclusive games. Plus the ability to add a 32GB Memory Stick. Apple should stick to Apps and Music plus cell phone.

“iPhone as a gaming console is a joke”
Funny that. Chinatown Wars just came out on iPhone and is a fraction (1/3) of the price on PSP, also rated outstanding on IGN as well as other sites. In other genres, more top-rated RPG’s have come out for it within the last year as compared to PSP as well… Zenonia, Inotia 2, Dungeon Hunter, SEED, Ravensword, Underworlds, Wolfenstein RPG, etc. not to mention other genre games like Spider, Knights Onrush, Oregon Trail, Rolando 2, Civ Rev, Fieldrunners, N.O.V.A., GeoDefense, or even Pocket Gods (just passed 2 million in sales… good luck with those numbers on PSP) to name a few. Also Firemint Racing destroyed GT PSP, and even Need for Speed Shift was rated better. Sorry Ivan, but iPhone not only had more top rated games when compared to PSP and DS, but also obliterated them in sales as well.
IGN’s Editors Choice Titles Scoring 9.0 or above within the last year:
iPhone: 14
PSP: 7
DS: 5
The iPhone has officially become a force to be reckoned with in mobile games.

So Sega is going viral on any hardware on the planet.
Sneaky. Rising from the ashes eh. Trying to make a name again… good!
But where is my Dreamcast games on the PS3?
Anyways, I read in an interview with Iwata that the iphone is now considered one of the DS’s competition & designing the next handheld with the iphone threat in mind.

Sega sucks and iPhone is a joke for games.

Chinatown Wars sucks the worst GTA ever. I bet if people say that Wii is better then Xbox and PS3 you will agree too wow sad sad. We all know GTA Chinatown War is trash. And most of the iPhone games are i barely use my iPod Touch for games is so fucking lame.

idk why this is news…there has been Genesis, GB and NES emulator since day one for the iPhone/iTouch
now, where is MGS for the iPhone?
January 21st, 2010
Roca.:
The iPhone only gets the crap. And on my hacked PSP i can play almost every DS and Sega game free.
iPhone is good for music, Apps and Phone for gaming is disastrous pure trash.
January 21st, 2010
I’m an iPhone owner and I don’t see it as a viable gaming platform.
Just like the wii, it requires games to address its motion gimmick and I feel the touch screen makes for a terrible controller.
You can show me sales numbers for both and it simply does not matter to me.
They simply don’t cater to the games I want to play. It’s that simple.

Yeah iPhone sucks for gaming i got 64GB iPod Touch from a girl i usually just use it for music and Youtube and also some free Apps but i try games is fucking retarded.

I mainly play RPG’s, a few shooters, some action games, and adventure on it. All of these genres, including racing, sports, strategy, platformer, casual, puzzle, etc. are now being represented well on it. I don’t think this was true a year ago, but it’s really come into it’s own just recently. It’s true the iPhone does have a lot of crap games, but the quality that is left over still amounts to twice as much as what has come out on PSP in the last year. The reviews speak for themselves… Sega’s just bringing more. There is also a C64 emulator that is about to get another update as well… Advanced Dungeons & Dragons? Yes please.

“where is MGS for the iPhone”
MGS Touch came out last year… it only got above average reviews, and is currently rated 3.5/5 on the app store.
I’m sinking my teeth into Dungeon Hunter right now… great game so far.

First EA, Konami, Sega, now Square Enix… FFI&II have been done so many times, I know, but there will probably be a lot of people who can’t help but download them to their iPhone as well…

There are exceptions but for the 99.99% of the so called games in the app store they are not games.
Pocket god id cool and I have pocket devil also but they are in no way games.
January 21st, 2010
I agree Phran. I have the 32gig iPhone and 32gig ipod touch and hate most of the so called games.
It’s a shame they suck you in by pricing them at $1-$5 because it adds up fast.
January 21st, 2010
My collection consists of bejeweled 2 and Tetris. I have a bunch of free demos but never bothered with the full version as I didn’t care for them.
I’m also not really a portable console player. I’ve never owned one. I borrowed my brothers PSP for GOW:Chains, but thats basically it. Wasn’t thrilled with the analog nub, and was next to impossible to play on the train as the glare was horrendous.
January 21st, 2010
I spent over $200 on a bunch of crap LOL.
At least I can use every game on both the phone and touch.
I can’t share with my wifes phone but I use the same account for my phone and touch.
Total waste of money.
January 21st, 2010
I had a PSP that was modded and sold it to buy a DS. I don’t play it either.
But GOW is getting me in trouble. I’m hooked on it. The wife just doesn’t get it. LOL
To bad for her though.

I make over 100G’s a year so I’m entitled to have my play time.
January 21st, 2010
LOL I do like the pinball and golf.
And the race games work well.
Monkey ball is just to dam hard.
January 21st, 2010
@ncaissie
my girl loves GoW for PSP (on easy and every magic, weapons unlocked)…
once you beat it, let your wife play through a “new game +” campaign with every unlocked for her because women dont have the dexterity/skills as men do.
@phranc
check your blorge PM
January 21st, 2010
“I make over 100G’s a year so I’m entitled to have my play time”
and you still complain about games retailing for $60, jesh!
you said you work for the government right
January 21st, 2010
@phranc, totally understandable if you are not into portable games including PSP games. I’m the same way when I’m at home and have the console option, there really is no comparison. The thing is when I travel I really don’t have a choice. I’ve got a really nice anti-glare screen for the iPhone 3G which helps tremendously as well.
@nc,
The thing about iPhone is that there are hundreds, if not thousands of more games out for it when compared to PSP or even DS, so there is going to be a lot more crap that literally is a waste of money out there as well, but there is also more quality, although the odds are against you finding it by yourself… the trick is to go to a review site you trust… one of which for me is IGN, then stick with the genres you enjoy, and/or do the “lite”/”free” version first before you spend the $1-$5. Reign of Swords is pretty good as well.
January 21st, 2010
“and you still complain about games retailing for $60, jesh! ” LOL yes and yaah Gov IT.
I sold the PSP just before COW was out on it.
January 21st, 2010
Good idea Carl. Anothers I like are idracula and zombieville.
January 21st, 2010

I glimpsed the review for idrac, worth a purchase? I haven’t seen anything on zombieville yet. Your thoughts on the games?

“yaah Gov IT”
crooked government over paying their employees!!
January 21st, 2010
@“sayeth the man with the superman logo and matching underoosâ€
LOL you have no idea dude.
I’m painting my boat yellow, with blue top and superman logo on the bow. LOL Superman and JLA is an obsession of mine. Seen every movie/show and never miss Smallville.
I have about 6 t shirts. I’m thinking about doing the same for my F150. Blue with the red and yellow logo on the hood. My uncle builds hotrods so he will paint it for me. LOL I’ll do the boat myself. it’s only a 14foot fishing boat.
I’ll link my photobuckit pics tonight.
January 21st, 2010
LOL yeah, we are underpaid compared to private.
$75,000 is my Sal but I do contract work also.
January 21st, 2010
@Carl
idrac is great. it has two onscreen joysticks one fire direction and the other is moving. It works very well and if there is a demo give it a try.
You get swarms of enemies coming at you all the time so you have to keep moving.
January 21st, 2010
superman is to be my favorite super hereo, but then I kind switched to the marvel side because they started making superman a lil gay.
tell why he got beat to shit by Batman?
January 21st, 2010
Who Am I? I’m Spider-Man. Peter is not gay.
January 21st, 2010
LOL That doesn’t make sense Roca. Where was this?
Batman and Superman are best friends.
I love all the marvel characters also. (Even dare devil)
But Superman beats all. (Bet he would beat the hulk if it came down to it.)
To unstoppable forces collide. (I have the comic just haven’t read it yet.)
January 21st, 2010
The only wat to beat the shit out of Superman is with K or someone like Doomsday or Darkside.
January 21st, 2010
I use to like Batman the best but now is Spider-Man. In movie i like better Spider-Man after is Batman Batman movie use to be rated the worst and the game too until Batman Begins. X-Men sucks. SuperMan is okay.
I can’t wait to see Mary Jane kiss Mickey and Donald Duck fight against Spider-Man also Pooh beat -XMEN.
Gotta love Disney.
January 21st, 2010
Batman has defeated Superman many times in the comics
Beat Down #1:
Superman went to give Batman some kryptonite after some evil thing or another made Superman a killing machine and he couldn’t control himself (mind you he didn’t kill anyone). He shows up with the green rock and tells him to save it just in case Batman ever has to put his ass down! The best part was how Batman already had a piece of kryptonite and told him, “no worries, I already have a contingency plan for you silly ass!” then they both end up fighting each other, and Batman destroys Superman like it’s nobody’s business
Beat Down #2:
In frank millers graphic novel “The Dark Knight Returns†and Batman was 55 years old. Superman doesnt age cause he is cheap like that, and Superman was the one that started the damn fight and got his ass kicked. The Soviets launch a a-bomb at USA, superman redirects the thing into a desert and it blows up in his face, the explosion kicks sand into the air blocking the sun, superman gets all fucked up and looks like a zombie. Some how he gets most of his power back eventually, and takes on Batman cause, batman starts to go senil and is killing the villians (like joker, and a gang leader) Batman makes a deal with the Green Arrow and batman goes out to fight superman in crime alley(the place his parents died) Batman shoots hunter missiles at superman that knock him around and he starts unloading sonic bursts at the bitch. superman rips the batmobile apart(which is a kick ass tank) and batman start kicking his ass with this strength suit. Superman starts killing batman then Green Arrow shoots a kryptonite arrow at him and batman starts feeding the bitch punches and eventually it gets to a point of batman about to break the Man of Steels neck. instead of killing him he lets him live to remember that Batman was the only one that could defeat him, Batman then has a heartattack from a pill he took a hour ago (later you learn it was to fake his death so people would leave him the fuck alone)
January 21st, 2010
I haven’t read any batman novels except the Superman/Batman ones. Like Enemies among us, Vengeance, The search for Kryptonite.
January 21st, 2010
well there you have it, Superman got his ass handed by Batman….
which I think is pretty studid. Superman is the Man of Steel, he can’t be beat by nobady. a fart from him will take Batman down and half of city
January 21st, 2010
I don’t think it would look good if batman lost in his own book. LOL And like I said he would need the k. Never heard of the power suit. I’ll have to look it up.
Later dudes.

I have an iPhone too, but I hate gaming on it. I really dislike the no feedback feel from the touch screen.
Wasted money on hero of Sparta, and couple more games. The games that I actually turn on now are just Chess, Checkers, TowerBloxx and the like.
I wasn’t thrilled by having to pay for airplanes to play in Ace Combat on the iPhone, since I’m a huge fan of the series. And it is the same about the Sega emulator, since I owned the Mega Drive and many of its games as well as the recent Sega collection on consoles.
@Carl. Thanks for the news about FFI on the iPhone, Carl. I don’t know where I placed my PSP UMD, and I certainly don’t like carrying more than one device nowadays.
Do you know any games that are similar to FF RPG style and don’t rely on touch so much, like how it is in HoS and Dungeon Hunter?
January 21st, 2010
Anyone else have a Genesis/Megadrive emulator on their PCs?
January 21st, 2010
HoS? Did you mean RoS as in Reign of Swords? Reign of Swords II is even better.
Elven Chronicles is probably the most similar looking to FF I&II RPG’s that I can tell, but there is also Vay… and I’ve seen some good things about Undercroft, which is more Western old-school RPG than JRPG, but still turn based… Underworlds is like Dungeon Hunter (ARPG) but more similar to Diablo, and pretty sweet IMO… Zenonia is still said to be the best (more like Zelda than FF)… the following link provides a fairly extensive overview (if you sift through the pages, and other genre game descriptions) of what’s available as far as RPG’s on the iPhone:
http://toucharcade.com/category/games/role-playing/
@Harry,
Hell yes… well I used to… what’s the best one you’ve found?
January 21st, 2010
Nope man, NES, SNES and PS1 only. I wish there was a Sonic´s Ultimate Genesis Collection for Wii like the one for Xbox360 and PS3. The one for GC is still good too although.
January 21st, 2010
@ CarlB,
I use Fusion (found it for free off Blorge.com a few years ago) and it works well. Apparently there’s a way of plugging in your 360 controller and using that, but I haven’t been able to do that yet.
January 21st, 2010
This is something like the paint job i’m going to do on my fishing boat.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b262/ncaissie/Boat/bluetopyellowb.jpg
I started painting this boat up like this after rebuilding the transome but i put it on hold waiting for someone to fix the motors. The guy had the motors for two years and didn’t work on them so I gave up.
I’m going to get rid of the boat and rework the trailer as a flatbead.
Here is my truck. Soon to be blue I hope.

Harry, I built an arcade cabinet once and had tons of sega/nintendo/Gameboy games. It was really cool but to small to put a good size screen in so I chucked it.
I still have the controls and coin slot. I may rebuild some day with an xbox instead of pc.
I even built an interface in VB6 with a jukebox that worked with coins.
January 22nd, 2010
Ah Harry, you’ve got me wanting a GP2X wiz now… here’s one (Gens 2.14) that works well for me, access to all the roms there too, no viruses (AVG scanned it and found it safe):
freeroms.com/genesis.htm
Sorral, here’s another good find… you can filter by genre at the top (I chose “RPG” here sorted by score):
http://www.slidetoplay.com/games?genres=7&sort=score&sort_order=desc&per_page=50
January 22nd, 2010
ncassie,
Nice! Did you take any pics of it?
@ CarlB,
Does Gens work with the 360 or PS3 controller?
January 22nd, 2010
Haven’t tried it with them yet, but it does work with a logitech that’s modeled after the PS3 controller…
January 22nd, 2010
@harry
I did. I will see if I can dig some up. They are picks of the building process.
Xbox makes a great emulator/media center machine. I haven’t done anything on the 360 though.
January 22nd, 2010
@Carl
I’ll check those out, thanks!
HoS = Hero of Sparta
And I have Zenonia, it is more like Zelda than anything else.
January 24th, 2010
Dual Shock 3 plugged in the USB port works very well with Gens, NES and Dolphin emulators…playing Rockman Mega World on Gens and Rockman 2 on NES. On Dolphin it Muramasa Demon Blade.
