BBC: PS3 hacker wants nothing to do with piracy
Recently a hacker claimed some fame for hacking the ultra-secure PS3. In an interesting development the hacker participated in an interview with a news outlet to talk about his exploits.
Hacker George Hotz gained a bit of fame when he hacked the iPhone as a teenager. Yesterday, Hotz claimed that he was able to hack the PS3. Well, technically hacked most of it. The whole system has yet to be hacked but he is working on it.
According to the BBC News, in an interview with Hotz, he claims that once he is able to fully hack the PS3 the information could lead to piracy and ability for others to run emulators, such as the PS2. However, apparently he does not want anything to do with piracy as he states, “I’m not going to personally have anything to do with that.†However, Hotz does plan on making the information available to others once he completes his task.
Apparently, Sony is already aware of this report and is investigating it.
A Sony rep stated:
We are investigating the report and will clarify the situation once we have more information.
It seems like Sony has its work cut out as it tries to scramble around to figure out how to protect probably the most secure home console ever made. I suppose having that claim has made it more attractive to hackers as well. On a different train of thought, I wonder if the 3DO ever got hacked.

Until I see a pirated bluray game playing on my PS3 all this crap means nothing.
For all we know this is part of Sony’s reverse psychology strategy to draw attention to the PS3.
Microsoft bleeding money for this guy to hack the PS3 makes no sense to me. Once the PS3 is hacked/moifiable and bluray pirated Nintendo & Microsoft better run for their money because demand for the PS3 will be huge!
I don’t want everything to reset again to PS2 days of old. I wan’t the PS3 to make its way to the top as legit as can be.

If the PS3 ever gets hack most likely it will use the massive HDD for games like PSP uses Memory Stick. Pirated Blu-ray Disc playable for PS3 movies and games will be huge leap in computer mastering engendering. But a blank disc is still very expensive. But i highly doubt the PS3 will ever get hack for real.

Yeah there was a british consumer report style show several months ago about the YLOD on the PS3. Personally i didn’t pay any attention to it. I already know the PS3 collects dust like crazy.. but aside from that I haven’t seen many other problems with it. Mine own personal PS3 doesn’t sync right with my TV when I use HDMI cable, but thats just my TV (It has problems with HDMI when I don’t use my PS3 for awhile)

I forgot to mention this. If it’s one thing i expect from Sony it is a console that will last for awhile.
A buddy of mine had a launch date PS2 and it finally gdied last year. between the two of us, we put alot of time on that thing. I couldn’t tell you how many times i borrowed it and pulled all nighters, playing for over 12 hours at a time. The most I ever played in 1 sitting was 18 hours on Drakenguard. I wouldn’t attempt that with a 360. At least not without an intercooler or something.
I also have a launch date PSP and it is still in perfect working order. Was thinking of modding it for homebrew, not for illegal downloads.
On the flip side of the coin… I wouldn’t rely on Sony if you have to send in your console for any reason… They fucked me over on a perfectly good fat PS2. Very long story. They sent me back a really crappy one with a poor laser.

I got 6 working fat PS2 since 2001. I used to leave like 3 on for a week and no problem.
My first PSP has been dropped and had water still working weird shit.
Xbox 360 is only worth having if you already made the terrible investment if is HACKED.

why ppl take the piracy comments so personal? piracy has existed in video for a long time…PS1, PS2, Dreamcast, DS, PSP, Wii, Xbox, X360 and iPhone…you name it (it has most likely been hacked).
I personally dont support piracy or used games…but if someone hacked their console, buy used games or even rent games (which Devs won’t get any profit from none of those) that’s their own choice and their own problem…once you buy a console you can do w.e the hell you want with it, you own it and its yours. The real problem here is ppl like “Hotz” who just live to make all these hacks possible.

As for what happened with my PS2 I will share that since you asked so nicely.
At one point I didn’t have a PS2 of my own. I already mentioned that I had borrowed my buddies quite a bit.
I work at a dunkin donuts. Not glamorous but pays my bills. The guy who delivers donuts had bought a fat PS2 but he really didn’t use it so he ended up selling it to me for $100. At that point it was about 6 months old but still in perfect condition.
The reason I bought the fat PS2 from him instead of buying a new PS2 slim was because I had my eyes on playing Final Fantasy 11, which required PS2 fat and the HDD to play. At the time I was using an iMac G3 to get online which won’t play FF11 lol.
So anyway I had bought the PS2 HDD and I made the mistake of buying a used ethernet adapter instead of a new one.
When i connected everything the HDD wasn’t being recongnized. After calling Sony they said I should ship the console, the ethernet adapter, and the HDD to them.
I included a note, telling them that I thought it was the adapter but i didn’t have a way of testing it.
Sony decided they would fix the problem by swapping out my PS2. Which means they gave me shitty customer support.
When I got everything back the HDD was damaged, I had to send it back and wait for a replacement. When I got that back I had the same problem. HDD was not recognized. At that point I managed to find another network adapter so I bought it. No surprise.. it worked fine then.
Unfortunately I didn’t find out until months later that the PS2 they send me had a faulty laser. I had bought MGS3 and it would not work on my system. After some testing I revealed the problem was the laser.
After that I said the heck with it and just replaced the laser myself and modded my console with a Crystal case and green LED lights. I always wanted to open the PS2 anyway and now i had a good excuse.

I try to be a voice of reason but I can’t help but be sick of the antics of some people here.
The topic of some people having more than one account seems to be a popular one. I myself even mentioned before how Ivan and Liquid often seem like the same person.
How anyone can assume I am someone else is beyond me. I have not seen anyone else who says the same things I do.
As a matter of fact I have mentioned on several occasions that I own the both the xbox 360 and PS3 and that i do enjoy them both. I don’t support fanboy-ism. Any TRUE gamer would own as many systems as possible. Being a fanboy is only going to hurt you in the end. If your a PS fanboy then your going to miss out on Gears of War, Mass Effect, Lost Oddysey, Fable, Forza and alot of other 360 exclusives. Like wise it is the same with being an Xbox fanboy. Your going to miss out on Uncharted, God of War, Gran Tourismo, and inFamous.
There are just too many good games out there to be so narrow minded. Your only hurting yourself by being deluded. Any REAL GAMER knows this.

heck.. I even own a Wii lol. my girlfriend/best friend bought it for me on July 3, 08. I stopped playing it by the end of August lol. It’s ashame but the Wii sucks a bit. It’s not very hardcore gamer friendly.
I will say this about it though, it has ALOT of wasted potential. I had borrowed Metroid Prime 3 from a friend and it was a really awsome experience. Eventually I wouldn’t mind getting the Trilogy and replaying the first 2 games with the motion controls. It’s ashame that the wii doesn’t have more games like that.
Also I gave No More Heroes a chance and I did have a few good laughs. The sequal comes out today. I wonder how that is going to do. if they fixed some of the problems with the original and kept the humor i might rent it just so i can dust off my wii. Yeah that sounds really good i know lol

I have to agree if you dont own both your missingout i only bought a ps3 because i wanted to play MGS since i have also enjoyed KZ2 (which i think is very GOW in its stylings by the way noone else ever points that out) Uncharted, Infamous. The only multi paltform i have bought for it is AC2. Im considering MAG but to be honest i;ve not been that impressed and GOW i think is the best looking game ive seen.

My xbox 360 was definately not a waste of money. I did experience RRoD but I had played mine ALOT. I’d say I own about 70 xbox 360 games. I honestly thought it was amiracle mine lasted as long as it did with as much as i played it. I did get lucky though. I purchased mine on Oct 5, 2006. It RRoD on Oct 4, 2009. Just 1 day shy of the end of the 3 year RRoD warranty lol. No one can deny I was very lucky. No biggie though. If it went down later I would have just opened it up and tried to fix it myself.
i can’t say that I am really happy with the replacement though, but at least it works for now. If something happens to it I will probably just shell out the $200 for an arcade unit. I more than got enough out of my system for the initial cost

MGS4 is one of the main reasons I bought a PS3 as well.
I haven’t spent much time with my PS3, pretty much only beating MGS4 while my 360 was being “repaired” by microsoft.
I own a few games for it though.
MGS4 blew me away! It was an incredible game. Truly worth playing. Anyone and everyone should play it.
Folklore. Played the demo when i first got the PS3 and I enjoyed it a bit. I like RPGs mostly so it was kinda a no brainer for me to check it out.
Valkyria Chronicles. Sweat graphics… Need to spend some more time playing it though
Resistance… Didn’t like it at all.
Demon’s souls… Getting my ass kicked never felt so good.
Uncharted… Wow I saw the sub and I crapped myself cause that was just such an awsome sight to behold. I didn’t get much farther than that though.
Right now that’s all I own for PS3 but i plan on buying inFamous, Genji, Lair and eventually the God of war collection and GoW 3.
If it’s not an exclusive I usually play it on 360. Also I am a big RPG fan so it’s easy to see why I enjoy the 360. It has ALOT more RPG’s.

I was simply stating that it is a bonus to some people to have both systems considering that both systems have decent titles. For example,I don’t own a Wii. I
personally see no value in the Wii system. If you see no value in the Xbox360, then it is your right to feel that way. I play the Xbox360 as well as the Ps3 system. Some people do find value in both systems.

I heard Eat Lead is pretty much your average shooter but it packs a load of humor and doesn’t take itself too seriously. I’ve been a fan of Duke Nukem for years and Eat lead takes cheap shots on Duke as well as a boat load of other games and genres.
I just started it up and laughed a few times already. I obviously got it for 360. As soon as I got into the game I got an achievement “It’s HAZARD TIME!” then when I went to pause it I got another achievement “Take 5.”
I had another laugh when I read the descriptions.
Hazard time says “Thanks for buying my game. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. — Sincerely, Matt Hazard”
and take 5 is ‘Pause the game. “Hey…come back here and play!”

They have Eat Lead for both systems but its currently onsale on Xbox for $10. It’s only $15 though for PS3, which still is a good deal.

Beh, I used to support dell laptops/desktops etc.
You’d be suprised at the amount of 50-60+ year olds out there with 12 gigs of ram that just play solitare
I’ve been slacking on my PC upgrades these days becuse quite frankly theres barely anything worth upgrading for anymore. Anything thats a sequal of a great game *cough*supreme commander*cough* is getting dumbed down in the hope of pulling in mor players. What a sad state of affairs.

I am a total PC nerd, glad there are more of us!
I just upgraded before christmas from an AMD 710×3@3.6ghz and a 4870 512mb to a c3 965×4@4.2ghz + 5970. I don’t plan on upgrading before 2012, heh. I am using a Gigabyte 780g UD3h Mobo, 4gb OCZ Gold XTC 1066 ram, 60gb OCZ SSD boot drive + 2x500gb 7200rpm WD Cav Black in Raid, and a 22″ 1920×1080 BenQ monitor. Windows 7 Ultimate 64 installed about a month ago. I really had to fight with the about upgrading the GPU + CPU, since I built this computer last spring, but I won (Yay!)
I will probably invest in a 2560×1600 monitor in the next few months, as my 5970 doesn’t really get a work out at 1080p. Other than that I plan on never cracking the case again except for regular cleaning of the heatsinks, heh.

Yeah, those were just the spec that came with it.
It’s not realy used for much more then a files sever.
I wanted to be able to play Farcry and Half Life 2 on it. it was only $1500 at Costco Canada. It play Crysis ok though.
I’m putting windows 7 on it soon.
