Alan Wake reportedly like a TV thriller
Alan Wake is truly an intriguing prospect. It’s a game that sounds like no other, looks gorgeous, and if Microsoft is to be believed, will “blur the lines between video gaming and television.” Whether that will actually work as an evocative experience remains to be seen.
It feels like we’ve been waiting for Alan Wake for years. Probably because we have. This is a game that could rival Gran Turismo 5 for development time, having been announced way back at E3 2005. It finally looks set to be released in April, and if innovation is your bag, Alan Wake should deliver.
Microsoft product marketing manager Laura Disney recently told CVG:
Alan Wake is on track from a development standpoint and will play an important role in our Spring 2010 game portfolio. [Remedy has] really polished the game over the last few months.
The time Remedy has spent on Alan Wake is indicative of the final result players can expect to see. The storyline will run as a driving factor throughout the game, creating an atmosphere that captivates the player in a way that many straight-out horror games do not.
Alan Wake will blur the lines between video gaming and television, and play on the strengths of both to create something truly compelling.
Video gaming has a strange relationship with other forms of media, with TV and movie crossovers usually sucking from all angles. But maybe a game that feels like a TV show (Twin Peaks and Lost have been cited as influences) will work. With this and Heavy Rain both due out soon, games where the story is king are going to be a big part of 2010.

This game is all for shits and giggles. No one gives two fucks about this. I’M DEAD FUCKEN SERIOUS! Now excuse me…I gotta send this shit back to the fires of hell

If this game was PS3 then Kev would call it the ‘biggest epic failure since Haze’ lol.
This game looks very good though, I’ll get it day of release.

@Dave
No matter how long Alan Wake and Gran Tourismo 5 have been in development for neither of them can even hold a candle to Duke Nukem Forever. 12 years and supposedly dead since last april but somehow somewhere something is being done with it. The voice actor who does Duke even confirmed it recently.

Another Vaporware title is War Devil.
Alan Wake looks good, but I don’t really see it catering to the shooter centric 360 crowd. In that respect I don’t think its sales will match its reviews.
January 28th, 2010
what Happened to Indiana Jones for PS3/360?
War Devil….that game is another “Too Human”
-Too Human went from PS1 to Gamecube, from Gamecube to Xbox, from Xbox to X360
-War Devil has gone from Xbox to X360, from X360 to PS3, from PS3 to Multiplatform (360/PS3)

Pretty sure Indy got scrapped. They’re using all the tech in the Force Unleashed game(s).
There was a wii/ps2 Indy game released recently that had nothing to do with the last movie.
I didn’t know Wardevil was an Xbox game first. I thought it was originally designed to take advantage of the cell. Then I hear it’s a multiplat, but it seemed like vaproware to me for a while. I recall an X member of the team spoke about it and said that development pretty much stalled and less than a level was completed.

“blur the line between video gaming and television”
Lol never heard THAT one before
I’m sure it will be interesting, though. However, I don’t have much of an interest in this and Heavy Rain as of right now.

@Dave
Make sure at no point during the review do you call the game innovative for the way it’s meshing TV with games.
Mike called Uncharted 2 innovative for it’s movie/game mesh and got a new one torn out for it by the resident Xbots.

lol I remember that…funny how they whine for stuff that’s not even argueable
January 28th, 2010
Hopefully this game has a good story to it.
When a game has a good plot I can’t seem to put it down. I kinda always want to know what happens next.
So I’m looking forward to this.

This will be a PC aquisition for this title.
January 28th, 2010
They indefinitely delayed the PC version of this title.
If it’s spec’d similar to Mass Effect 2, I’ll have no problem playing it if I choose to go that route.

Oh well, considering that ALan Wake for PC was apparently a big deal when MS announced it how ever many years ago, as it was supposed to utilize DX10 in exciting and compelling ways. (thats right, it was supposed to release long before Windows 7 and DX11) That it might not be for PC anymore essentially removes it from my radar entirely. Yet another bucket of MEH to flush down my boring, uninterested toilet.

Like a TV thriller huh? That description reminds me of this other game… Heavy Rain.
January 28th, 2010
BJ,
I was thinking the same thing. Heavy Rain Vs. Alan Wake.
January 28th, 2010
I have to admit. I’m not sold on Heavy Rain as of yet simply because of it’s gameplay. Alan Wake on the other hand at least caters to fans of action games.
The reasons Alan Wake is getting attention in this article is the cross over from game to tv series. I think that Heavy Rain will do that a lot better.
Alan Wake will more than likely sell better than Heavy Rain though.
January 28th, 2010
the game is being described as a TV thriller because its going to have espisode contents (ala Siren PS3)- so no innovation there
from wiki:
Alan Wake
“The story will play out in an episodic format, with a television show-style presentation. Remedy has confirmed that Alan Wake is only the first season of a bigger story, opening the door for future sequels”
but the gameplay itself is just going to be like a GTA game and not as much movie-based as Heavy Rain
January 28th, 2010
I guess since we have blurred the line between movies/game and Tv/games, the next innovative title will blur the lines between documentaries and games? Or how about Billboards and games? A radio dj video game would be innovative too! Real Life will take some time, but while we wait we can blur the lines between all fake produced forms of reality and videogames, because you know, they are SO different.
Are there any reality TV/Video game cross overs yet? That would be the pentultimate blurring of lines between two of the most pervasive forms of escapism from reality.
January 28th, 2010
I am excited for heavy rain, as I was a big fan of Indigo Prophecy (Farenheit in NA) and trust these guys to push their philosophies to an exciting limit.

Who wants to be a millionaire, American Idol, Are you smarter than a fifth grader, and Deadliest Warrior (download only-soon).
I’m sure there’s more, but those are all I can think of off the top of my head.

“I want Heavy Rain. I will no longer care for online game much.”
What about MAG?
January 28th, 2010
Mass Effect 3
January 28th, 2010
phranctoast:
I like MAG but not a lot. My favorite online game is Killzone 2 and SOCOM 1 & 2. MAG i can even begin to describe how much average the game is. I don’t really regret buying the game but $60 is way too much it needs to be just $40 or $30 not worth $60 the game is trying something way too chaotic and epic. I can’t wait for Zipper Interactive new game hopefully it would just have 32 players online and hopefully is SOCOM. I don’t like MAG that much is good don’t get me wrong but i needed to invest that money on Heavy rain i knew it.
Roca.:
Maybe, i hope is the Mass Effect series. Is just a matter of time.
January 28th, 2010
why dont you like mag?
January 28th, 2010
my brother bought MAG yesterday, and while its not the best shooter ever it delievered a pretty amazing gameplay for a 256 player online shooter game. its mostly a tactical shooter with RPG elements and that’s what I like the most about it because it keep you coming back.
but I know ppl like the noob friendly “all-out” shooters like CoD.
MAG is polished for a game with a large scale and with that many player playing at the same time..so far I got to level 5 yesterday (ahout 3 hours of gameplay) and I was able to buy a few gadgets for my character
January 28th, 2010
I’ve been hearing very good things about MAG lately. I wish I had the time to devote to it. It really appears to be only for the hardcore, and essentially eliminated the one man army feeling of MW1&2.
January 28th, 2010
the good thing is that the game is not broken even with the amount of players playing at once and that’s a great accomplishment because some 32+ online multiplayer games feels broken from the getgo.
I will play it more today, on the other hand I’m getting Bioshock 2 Limited Edition for free as a Valentine’s present, Maybe I will have money for Dante’s Inferno after all
January 28th, 2010
I might trade MAG for any game including multiplaform.
January 28th, 2010
including a 360 game?
January 28th, 2010
Roca.:
No just PS3 games. Why that hell would i want a crappy game Xbox 360 game.
January 28th, 2010
Ivan,
See you should have played Bayonetta or Darksiders. (Smile)
Guys,
What’s the early feedback on Dante’s Inferno?
January 28th, 2010
i don’t see how alan wake is in any way ground breaking (or heavy rain for that matter). To be honest, the last truly ground breaking games were portal, and for its customisation, LBP.
January 28th, 2010
I missed Indigo Prophecy, but I’ve only heard good things about it. I am really interested in Heavy Rain. I’d like to try something new, just to see how it works. As long as the story/characters hold up, I don’t think I would a more passive input experience.
My controllers could use a break after the button mashing beat down they endured after consecutively playing through GOW 1 and 2
January 29th, 2010
Damn Ivan you were praising MAG not to long ago what happened? You said you were in the beta so you knew basically what you were getting. Are you just bored with it already? And why all of the sudden you know longer care for online gaming that much? Any game that came out with a weak MP or SP only mode you used to raise hell about it. Did something happened I am only asking because this don’t sound like you.
January 29th, 2010
Pay no attention to Ivan-add. He was also talking up the last guardian yet never played sotc.
January 29th, 2010
Roca, does MAG still let you shoot your own team?
January 29th, 2010
yeah, but you get penalized for it or kicked out by your own team which fucks up your stats.
overall MAG is great online experience (not the gratest MP game but if your a hardcore shooter fan or a guy who likes tactical/strategy I think you will love/enjoy MAG) with a insanse Character proggression
January 29th, 2010
@Ghost
Ivan got pwnd and now he is sad.
January 29th, 2010
are you getting it ncaissie? I thought you liked the Beta.
who’s getting Heavy Rain or White Knight Chronicles?
January 29th, 2010
Not a RPG fan, and I’m mixed on Heavy Rain.
If anything I’ll probably pick it up halfway through the year when theres less out.
January 29th, 2010
watch this trailer

January 29th, 2010
No, I liked the beta but the punks killing their own players sucks and they didn’t get kicked out.
Besides I can buy ivans for $5 LOL
January 29th, 2010
Where is Ivan? LOL
January 29th, 2010
he is getting pwnd in MAG
January 29th, 2010
LOL probably. He got very upset with GOW. I thought he was going to cry. He said it sucks because it was too hard.
January 29th, 2010
I figured I was going to read another “Gamer stabs family because the game was to hard” story in the New York Times and Blorge LOL
January 29th, 2010
LMAO!!
January 29th, 2010
Well, It’s 4:30.
I’m off. Have a good weekend.
