Apple iPad – What it means for gamers
As you probably already know, Apple unveiled its long-rumored tablet PC, the iPad, yesterday. But what does the new device, marketed as filling the space between and iPod Touch and a Macbook, mean for games and gamers?
It really depends on your point of view. If you are one of those people who think the iPhone and iPod Touch are great games consoles then you’ll love the iPad. It’s basically a bigger version of the Touch, and all the gaming apps which work on the former will work on the iPad with no modifications needed. However, they’ll either be tiny and stuck in the middle of the screen or expanded to fit the screen and a little jaggy as a result. At least until developers start building games purely for the iPad.
The iPad could, conceivably, become the handheld device of choice for casual gamers, but it won’t float the boats of those with a more serious bent. Even casuals are set to be disappointed by the lack of Flash support, the platform of choice for most Web-based games.
Gaming on the iPad was demonstrated during the Apple presentation, with Gameloft showing off its first-person shooter N.O.V.A., and EA showing off Need For Speed: Shift. However, neither looked that great, and that leads me to conclude that gaming will play a very small part of the iPad. This isn’t the oft-rumored Apple console, and I’d personally stick to the DS and PSP for your handheld gaming needs.

Fuck all

@Dave, geeez you crack me up mate…bloody funny.

As an iPhone owner I don’t see it as a viable game device but I have never been into portable consoles.
The only reason this may take off is fact that it’s an apple product as tablets just fail.

Another product that reminds me of Minority Report…
a good object lesson for the next generation of handhelds from Sony and Nintendo….
wont replace the laptop…
A nice fan during hot weather though….

All this means for gamers is that people like Ivan will have another way to disturbing comments on the blorge.
Now here is a much cooler use though.

I actually saw this in the tech blorge last month and thought it looked cool as all hell. It’s a radio controlled drone that you use the iPhone or Ipod touch to control. I could see the iPad being able to be used for it as well since it works via wi fi.
I know I wouldn’t mind having one but they are still in development and also expensive, about $1,000 for a development model.
The adult in me says “It’s way to expensive”
The kid in me says “that’s what my college fund is really for!”

iPad is just a bigger iPhone with notebook capabilities..but so far previous has not been very good. how is this trying to replace netbooks with it can’t even run multiple apps and nothing beats keyboard and mouse when doing a project (for work or school)

apperantly the iPad is one of the gadgets in Heavy Rain
January 28th, 2010
The real big deal is that the iPad contains apples first CPU. They bought a company a few years back, and this aquisition created a CPU. For the first time ever, Apple owns its own processor, cutting out another middleman on the road to financial dominaiton. Well, not really, but I am sure that is how the execs see it.

Off topic.
I have a cool app for the iPhone that remotely controls iTunes on my PC so I could use the phone a remote for PC thats hooked up to my entertainment center.
That would be cool for this device as well.
any word on iWork being available on this device?
January 28th, 2010
once you buy the iPad, 3-6 months down the read they are going to release the iPad 4G and 3-6 months later the are going to the iPad 4G S which would be able to run multiple apps at the same time.
January 28th, 2010
@phran
It can run all iphone apps.

Yeah. It’s definitely best to wait for the next version.

@Sorral.
Does iWorks work on iPhone?
January 28th, 2010
Considering that most analysts were expecting the price to be double what was announced, and even at that price point were sure it would sell well, I don’t think this will bite apple in the ass at all, more like a slight tickle on the reach around mid-hummer.
January 28th, 2010
@Phran
Nobody knows for sure when I tried to look for info on that, because it seems that there is a non-disclouser(whatever the spelling) agreement on anyone who has the new SDK, as they can’t talk in public about it yet although someone is bound to spill the beans
In my opinion, it is unlikely due to the screen size/resolution on the iPad compared to the iPhone.
January 28th, 2010
what is iWorks?
January 28th, 2010
Basically office for Mac.
January 28th, 2010
Does anyone know if this thing has 3G/wifi connection? Without 3G it is pointless to me.
January 28th, 2010
yeah but you will have to pay more.
with wifi only:
16GB = $500
32GB = $600
64GB = $700
with wifi + 3g:
16GB = $630
32GB = $730
64GB = $830
January 28th, 2010
plus the 3G monthly plan
January 28th, 2010
I paid over $900 (with Taxes) for my 32gb Iphone.
January 28th, 2010
If they add more data and let me share with my iphone I would get one. Mainly for reading comic books.
I have so many in paper but have the missing ones on pc.
January 28th, 2010
well those are US prices…idk how much it will cost in Canada
January 28th, 2010
iPad is going to flop Apple sucks at gaming they better stick to phone and music. They are trying to hard to come to Sony’s world. This shit is not going to sell anything.

@ncaissie

Phranc posted the link [look for his second post]

To the 50 Million drain. But it was not worth the investment at all. They would had benefited more if they had led this go to PS3 also. The GT DLC was a major flop.

Liquid cleaned up this site
it was freaking slow today! (damn you liquid)
January 28th, 2010
Very interesting concept. However, I believe that everyone under the age of 65 would want to stick with the simple small touch-screen, or a laptop. We’ll see, we’ll see. Nice innovation, though.
January 28th, 2010
I would love this device for reading comics but not with those memory options.
January 28th, 2010
I wont be getting it. They refuse to put any sort of memory card expansion in their devices. I mean cmon …. these days and they are offering 16 and 32 gig with no expansion options.
I do like their products, but they are big on locking you in to the product, so you will need to buy the next update/incarnation. If I was to get it, it won’t be until a much later version.

I’m going out on a ledge here and I am going to predict that Ivan is totally and completely wrong here.
