Nintendo dismissive of Apple iPad
Some people think the iPad signals a new era in the way we’re going to consume all kinds of media. That includes video games. But I’ve already spelled out what the iPad means for games and gamers – nothing – and it seems Nintendo President Satoru Iwata agrees. In fact, his opinion on the new device is so dismissive as to be downright rude.
According to The New York Times, when asked his opinion on the newly-announced iPad, Iwata said:
It was a bigger iPod Touch. There were no surprises.
Wow, that’s probably one of the best put-downs I’ve yet heard about the iPad, simply because it is so short and to the point. And to be honest Iwata has a point: the iPad is nothing more than a bigger iPod Touch.
Nintendo clearly doesn’t think Apple has any chance of providing competition in the handheld gaming market with this first-generation iPad. But there’s still a chance that Apple could improve the product by a huge amount over the next couple of years that it could become a viable gaming platform, at least for casuals.

… and speaking of Nintendo
@Ivan
your PSP has been kicking Nintendo’s butt lately in Japan on its way to the top
Sony is in Assault Mode!

@gunstar
Generally PSP wins (marginally) a couple of months a year in Japan, don’t get too excited.
Japan
DS 30 million
PSP 14 million
btw I hope you’re talking about portables because the Wii vs PS3 comparison is even more embarrassing.

Nintendo isn’t in the position to be dismissive about anything. Sure the Wii sells, but it’s shit. It’s going to catch up to them at some point when people realize they don’t have to put up with it because they have other/better options available.

“I smell arrogance….”
I smell that too, but rightfully so. Nintendo has dominated the handheld gaming market since what seems like the beginning of time.

@ Barnabe Jones.
I’m pretty sure it’s only the hardcore gamers that don’t like the wii.
I’m willing to bet that there are alot more people happy with thier Wii than people who aren’t.
It’s all down to opinion. Hardcore gamers may prefer a 360 or PS3 but others may want what the wii offers.
People dismiss the wii and exclude from the so called “console war” but the fact is that it’s sold/selling better than anything else.
Your opinion is that the Wii is shit, but your opinion isn’t fact. It’s only your opinion.

@ Virus
Let me change the statement that Barnabus made around so it makes more sense.
Barnabus said “Sure the Wii sells, but it’s shit.”
Now let me fix that to something that makes more sense.
“Sure the Wii sells, but if your a hardcore gamer it’s shit.”
I think it makes more sense this way. At this point it’s less of an opinion and more of a “Universal Truth”
See how that works?

By “shit” I was referring to the out dated hardware and weak software line up. I know the Wii does have some good games, but I think any competitor out there offers more.
Being a popular fad will carry you far. Very far. But if they carry on the way they have been, it will catch up to them. Maybe Nintendo will step it up with the Wii 2, but it’s doubtful.

Former lifetime hardcore gamer…From the first console ever called Odyssey..Through C64, PC, Atari and a range of evolving consoles (Atari 5200 with the analog controllers was probably my fav..that and Sega Genesis later)…
Never owned a Nintendo…Never liked their too friendly cartoon graphics.
Tried Wii for the first time in Dec. Looking for a Wii now for myself though simply because it’s a more engaging style of play than just using fingers/thumbs with the X360 or PS3 style controller. Wii…Tennis..Boxing..Maybe some HOD…Anyhow….yea…it’s a little more amusing/engaging than moving a mouse or pushing a button.
Checked a bunch of stores in Austin (not a small town) and shelves empty everywhere…crazy.
I think part of the shortage is due to them catering to the Fat-Lady Fitness market.. Good move on their part I suppose.
Anyhow… The fact that the graphics are shit…and the current game selection is too cartoony…But people are buying them says something that hopefully MS and Sony are paying attention to…. Yea, I know about about the MS Natal project… But where is it?
It’s time for the gaming experience to evolve…
Show me body-movement style interface, better graphics, some darker games..and an internet-gaming head-to-head or team capability and I’ll show you a winner.
Meanwhile…some of us hardcore gamers..bored with content and the current level of things on pc/consoles…will yes.. regress..and go buy a shit platform for the different experience… $199 is pretty cheap..so not like cost is a barrier. Who’d of thunk you couldn’t find one though.

I was actually tempted to buy one of these, until I saw the M11X

A large high power netbook that plays crysis, to me, is like canoe with a 30ft sail: an oddity that may perform amazing in just the right circumstance, but destroys the original purpose for a canoe.

Oh, and alienware is overpriced, overhyped crap since they were bought out by Dell. This netbook doesn’t change that.

Sony and Epic had nice things to say. Not from Nintendo though.
