Jaffe working on new Twisted Metal game for PS3 – reboot considered as new IP

January 31, 2010

David Jaffe’s God Of War III is now just a couple of months away from release. However, some people are already looking beyond that game and focusing on Jaffe’s next project. Although yet to be officially confirmed as such, it’s likely to be a new Twisted Metal title for the PS3.

The speculation has been going on for months, and the only real evidence of the game was the picture of a mushroom cloud in the shape of a clown. Playstation Lifestyle recently suggested the new game wasn’t likely to be a Twisted Metal title as Jaffe was hinting at a new IP. But Jaffe made his intentions clearer with this paragraph on his blog.

Just to be clear, I’ve never said we were or were NOT making a new Twisted Metal. Ever. But just to be 100 percent clear, if we were to make a new Twisted, I would consider it a reboot. The last console Twisted was 10 years ago. If we were to make a new one, we’d be starting with the assumption that no one knows what Twisted Metal is anymore and we’d have to re-earn each and every fan the series ever had. So in that sense, IF we were to ever make a new one, we’d consider it a brand new series/game/franchise.

Oh come now, Jaffe, you clearly are working on a new Twisted Metal game or a simple denial of the whole thing would have sufficed. As it is, that non-confirmation is ironically all the confirmation I need.

So, a Twisted Metal reboot it is then. Is anyone excited by that?

IT’s been too long… Twisted Metal black wasn’t even that great…

I mean 2 was awsome and I enjoyed seeing Rob Zombie in was it 3 or 4? I dunno which but that was kinda cool.

Anyway… if they are going to do a new twisted metal they are probably going to try to make it even more realistic and that would just suck.

  4. Zoar:

    @FahKinSuPah:

Man, you killed the joke! you were just suppose to say ‘no’

  5. phranctoast:

Twisted metal is great. Black was awesome. I wish this news was a confirmation. The tm series is one if
the reasons I prefer the ps brand overall.

  6. Barnabe Jones:

I have to admit… I was never really a huge fan of the series. I would be interested in seeing the re-boot though.

  7. phranctoast:

They have to keep the tm1,2,black controls intact. Those were one of the reasons those games were better than the others.

  8. Liquid:

hey CAD you shitbag, you said you were going to leave two years ago aswel! hahaha

  9. Roca.:

I loved al TM games except #4, TM4 sucked big time.

Lol at liquid. Poor CAD ;)

  10. Spideydog:

Yeah, I must admit to being a TM fan. Would be good to see a new one (done right though)

I’ve never played Twisted Metal before, so….

    *backs out of room slowly*

    Off topic:

I went to Saskatoon for the weekend, and saw Avatar in 3D. I was skeptical of it at first, since my first thought after seeing the trailer was “Well this looks stupid”. However, I’m dumbfounded. Sure, the human actors were ass, and most of the dialogue was ass, but it’s more seen than heard. 2 hours 40 minutes and I didn’t even get restless. I just stared at the screen in awe just like every other person in the theater. Out of the whole theater, only 1 lady fell asleep. It started at 10:15 at night, and I don’t even think I BLINKED throughout the whole thing. Awesome show.

  12. Roca.:

Good movie indeed Saber…too bad HH is not here to tell how shitty the movie is…

  13. Saber_HAHAha:

Does he really think so? …BLASPHEMY!!!1

I’ve never seen a 3D movie since Spy Kids 3 with the stupid red-blue glasses, and the movie was crap. Worst movie I’ve ever seen was “Son of the Mask”, though. The funny thing is that I had my 3D glasses on during the previews before Avatar, thinking it was 3D and “looked so rad”, then a thing telling me to put on my glasses pops up, with the glasses popping out of the screen, and I nearly spilled my root beer. Smooth move, saber…

  14. phranctoast:

    @Dave

Jaffe has nothing to do with GOW3. He’s not even a consultant, like he was on GOW2. Also, the “only real evidence” of a new twisted metal was not the mushroom cloud, but a decoded message in Twisted Metal Head on for the PS2 which decoded to Twisted metal on the PS3.

To answer the question though, I’m excited more than anything for a new TM game. I just hope they don’t screw with the controls of the game. The TM series left Jaffes hands after TM2, which is why TM3 and 4 sucked balls. They tried to mess with the physics of the game and make it similar to Vigilante 8, which while being a good game was not TM. All the licensed music in the world couldn’t save those games. Then the series went back into his hands with TM black, which was every bit as good, if not better than the first two games.

  15. Roca.:

    hey Phranc

I loved TM3 as much as I loved TM2, what was the difference in the controls, I dont recall any game breaking difference?

  16. phranctoast:

The overall physics were changed. It’s hard to describe without playing both at the same tim. The cars seemed heavier and clunkier in TM3+4. They felt as if the car would roll over by simply trying to turn.

You could tell that someone different made the games. Licensed music as opposed to not. They took the fun and tried to make it over the top “metal”.

    from wiki about TM3+4.

After a contractual dispute with SingleTrac, Twisted Metal development duties were handed over to Sony’s in-house development team, 989 Studios. The Twisted Metal titles developed by 989 Studios were fundamentally different, as the code base was completely rewritten. Sony introduced advanced physics simulation and AI techniques to the series.

David Jaffe, co-creator of the series, once expressed his displeasure at these two iterations of the game series, and was reported to have said, “….[in and of themselves] they’re good games, they’re just not good Twisted Metal games.”

    about Black

“them the opportunity to develop a new Twisted Metal title and their first game was Twisted Metal: Black for PS2.

The game is darker in atmosphere and departed from the style of previous games. The more mature content that some of the endings contained led to the removal of the FMV sequences from the European version.”

about a future TM for the PS3.

“It has been unofficially announced that Jaffe and his new company, Eat Sleep Play, will be developing a new title in the Twisted Metal franchise[2], for the PlayStation 3. The announcement, not officially confirmed by Sony, came from a hidden message that was decoded in the Twisted Metal: Head-On “Dark Past” documentary where groups of numbers appeared on screen at points during the video which corresponded to letters of the alphabet. When deciphered, the message reads “Twisted Metal is coming on PS3″. The title of the game is believed to have been displayed various times throughout the documentary which is the original Twisted Metal logo but in colors of rustic browns and yellows. However, Sony has not officially confirmed the existence of the game, and upon further questioning on multiple occasions Jaffe has insistently declined to comment further, and has in general refused to officially announce the title of Eat Sleep Play’s first major game until Sony is ready for him to do so.

Eat Sleep Play may have provided more information about what is to be implemented into the new installment of the franchise. During the Sweet Tooth Tour in Twisted Metal: Head-On: Extra Twisted Edition, when unlocking certain information about the history and developments of previous TM games. On feature 18/29 the developers state that the touring mode was to have been incorporated in Twisted Metal: Harbor City, a.k.a. Twisted Metal: Black II, which was to have both Sweet Tooth and Preacher playable and have a full interactive game mode. Of course, this was scrapped as TM:HC was never finished. But in an interesting note, in feature 18/29 they explain how the mode was to work and going on into the traps and end the paragraph with “Enjoy! We won’t go so easy on you next time!”. Thus, giving a possible hint that this mode could very well be implemented in the next Twisted Metal game for the PlayStation 3.”

  17. Roca.:

    awesome….

nothing will make me happier than seeing Sweet Tooth in HD :D

    I will like to see:
    -a good story/campaign mode
-all the core character and vehicles back
-co-op (offline & online) for campaign
    -different online multiplayer mode
    -team-based multiplayer mode.
-gaining XP to level up you vehicles, character & Speacial Weapon (for SP mode and depending on you level the harder the AI is going to be)

  18. phranctoast:

    I will like to see:
    -a good story/campaign mode

**Completely essential. Black in my opinion had the best stories for characters. It was very dark and twisted and similar to a Twilight Zone more than anything.

-all the core character and vehicles back

**And A couple of new ones. I want Mr Slam to come back.

-co-op (offline & online) for campaign

**Agree. they definitely need a online co op as well as offline. Online being the better of the two, but believe it or not people still want offline co op.

    -different online multiplayer mode

**I’d like to see one mode that is similar to the PSN battle cars mode, where you try and score goals (soccer, hockey)
Another thats similar to calling all cars with the criminal, but in the TM engine.
Maybe even a “Rogue trip” gameplay mode.

    -team-based multiplayer mode.

**It’s funny. I was just thinking that.

-gaining XP to level up you vehicles, character & Speacial Weapon (for SP mode and depending on you level the harder the AI is going to be)

**I’d like XP to occur in MP as well as SP. Customization for the exterior of your car as well. You can set up the type of Machine gun. Buying different rounds (armor piercing..etc).

I think a good change they should make is allowing two players to control one car. The second player would be able to control other weapons not able to be utilized by only one player. it would make for some interesting co op.

They would also need to tweek the online portion to give points based on damage done to enemies, and not points given for the kill. This would eliminate the faggot lurkers that sit around and wait for someone to be almost dead before they go in for the steal kill.

Also.. Cars being able to trick missiles by launching flare/chaffe or even napalm. I want the ability to jump kept in there, and the jump being essential to jumping up and having a missile scream right underneath you.

Richochet bombs have to revert back to the spinning saw blades than the round bomb (round bomb is stooopid).

I’d also like to see the animation similar the story board animation similar to TM2 (inFamous) rather than the full out CGI black employed, while still being as dark and twisted as Black.

I want to see creative levels like the Prison Ship.

In the prison ship you start in a confined shipping area where there’s two cars to fight. After about a minute it opens up to the rest of the ship. Then the ship docks and you can get off of it and fight more enemies within the prison island.

Another cool aspect could be an arena within the game, where players go and fight it out one on one and others view. The arena can be part of another level.

  19. phranctoast:

A mode similar to the Aliens vs Predator mode where everyone is hunting one car. This car should have unlimited weapons/more health/unlimited power for power based attacks (invisibity/freeze/naplam). Whoever destroys the car or causes the most damage becomes the hunted.

UT3 and UT2k4 proved that vehicular CTF can work. I’d like to see that in the next TM game.

  20. Roca.:

damn nice list…maybe we should email Eat Sleep Play with all our ideas. some of this sound cool and will defenitely help the TM franchise

  21. ncaissie:

    Slow day!

  22. phranctoast:

I’d like to believe they know what they are doing by now. I think the game will be announced at E3 this year. I was a bit worried when Jaffe had the pole up to determine what people would rather have. Online or full fleshed out SP campaign. I don’t see why both can’t exist. All the SP levels are the same as MP levels. It’s not like different assets are used, like in some FPS sp/mp levels.

  23. Barnabe Jones:

So both Dave and Mike took the day off? Must be nice ;)

  24. ncaissie:

yeah, I wish I was back in Florida right now.

  25. phranctoast:

    @Saber.

How did you let the TM series pass you by? It’s Sony’s oldest IP.

  26. ncaissie:

Avatar was ok but a little to gay for me.
I do love the new 3D though.

  27. Roca.:

“So both Dave and Mike took the day off? Must be nice”

    along with the xbots ;)

  28. JofaMang:

M$ announced the 250gb HDD upgrade today. It is being released in Japan for the equivelant of $170. Western pricing was not announced, but in the past, the Yen conversion rate at the time of release has been an accurate indicator for 360 peripheral pricing.

    $170….

The Xbots are gonna need a couple more days off to heal their reamed sphincters.

  29. Barnabe Jones:

All of the xboys got banned I think, right?

I know CAD was, but then he came back. Then kev got banned. Happy left to marry a boy from Thailand. Carl b?

The feature of Sega is crazy and I have no idea what he is saying half the time.

  30. Roca.:

250GB HDD for $170? thats almost another Arcade and almost half of a PS3..

Jofa is right, xbots will indeed need a few days off :D

  31. Saber_HAHAha:

    @ Phranc

Back in those days, I was a Nintendo guy. I jumped to Sony once I figured out that the Gamecube was complete junk. Just about jumped to Microsoft after the PS3′s initial hardships, but the RROD (along with other issues) put me off. Unfortunately, I never got to play some good old Sony games such as Sonic and FF, and I never even heard about Twisted Metal until recently.

    @ ncaissie

Avatar was a little too gay for you?

You mean alienphiliac. We got some blue-on-blue action in good ol’ 3D…

  32. Roca.:

    @Saber,

the N64 was pretty lame compare to the PS1. it had its few “instant-classic” games (just like the Dreamcast) but overall it fell short compare to the PS1 overall library.

I choose a PS3 instead of a 360 because of Sony’s well established first party games such as Twisted Metal, Syphon Filter, Ratchet & Clank, God of War, Gran Turismo, etc…. also add all the Japanese support a Sony console is going to get. Now they reached a higher level by constantly creating awsome new IPs that will stay exclusive on the PS3 like Uncharted, inFamous, Heavy Rain, White Knight Chronicles, Last Gardian, Resistance and more.

you can buy Twisted Metal 2 (PS1) on the PSN for $5.99 and play it on your PSP/PS3. you should also try FF7 (if you like RPGs) and Silent Hill (if you like Horror games)

  33. Saber_HAHAha:

    @ Roca

Yup, but I was too much of a Nintendohead to see that. The only time I could wean myself off them was when they started disappointing me. N64 had it’s games, but the PS1 library was much better… I guess that I was still satisfied with the system, unlike the Wii sitting in the top of my closet.

  34. ncaissie:

LOL “The Xbots are gonna need a couple more days off to heal their reamed sphincters.”

Yes I thought Avatar was to girly for my taste.
I’m not much for girl moves. which sucks because my wife hates my action movies. We both like comedy which is good.

  35. phranctoast:

    @Saber

I’d recommend skipping TM2 (as great as the game is, it’s still a PS1 game and has not aged great) and go with TM:Black. You can find it on Amazon for $4 right now. Game runs at a crisp 60fps and has a story for every character which will make you want to strive to beat it with them all. The game is also very difficult which I hear could be a turnoff to some gamers but it’s refreshing imo. It may be best to start on easy and make your way up to normal. Of course you’ll need a ps2 or BC PS3.
If you do end up getting it, you’ll want the to know the energy based attack (freeze, mines) and you may have to look that stuff up, as I don’t recall it in the instructions guide.

  36. Roca.:

    well….Colts vs Saints this Sunday.

if the Colts win, all my favorite sport teams will be back-to-back-to-back champions.

    Lakers – Yankees – Colts(?) :D

  37. phranctoast:

That is pretty impressive. I was thinking the small possibilty with the jets before as well, of
course as a third sport I dint care so I’d just root for the rangers. They made the playoffs last week so i figured they’de
    have rhe best shot.

  38. Kevo/Sir_Chubs_Alot08:

twisted metal 3 an 4 r the best especiaaly using cheat codes like unlimitedf ammo with rickashays lol

  39. phranctoast:

They suck kevo ;) and all the games accepted codes.

  40. Roca.:

    TM2 had the best maps

  41. phranctoast:

    @Roca,

Twisted metal Head on (PS2) version had some TM2 maps mixed in there with a slight upgrade in graphics. Technically the game was a port of Head on, on the PSP so the graphics in that portion of the game were never true PS2 potential.

I think they had Paris and Hollywood.

My favorite TM2 map was probably Holland though. It was wide open and insane.

I still like Blacks maps the most though. IMO, nothing beats the Prison Ship..

  42. Roca.:

I played Black for a lil while…then I lost it while moving from NY to Boston, I will get it back one of these day and give it another try

  43. Ghost:

    @Roca
    GOooooooo SAINTS!!! hehehhehlol

  44. phranctoast:

I’m the only one I know at home rooting for the colts lol!

  45. Roca.:

Go Colts….I remember Ghost hating on the Yankees last year, but hey look at them now…they are champions

  46. Roca.:

“I’m the only one I know at home rooting for the colts lol!”

your from NY, since the Colts destroyed the Jets #1 ranked defense I can see why they are not rooting for the Colts

  47. phranctoast:

I don’t think that’s why. If the colts win the Jets fan can say…”hey.we were beat by the team that won the Super Bowl”, and some people just root for the AFC.

My GF’s father is a Saints fan which pushes her in that direction, and my roommate…well…she’s just rooting for the Saints because of the hardship in New Orleans.

  48. Ghost:

Why are you guys even talking about the Colts for piff piff we all know that the Saints are going to kick some baby horse ass….LoL hehehe hehehe…

  49. mad34c:

Wow, I have been saying this for years now. I really hope Twisted Metal comes back and for both Ps3 and Xbox 360. This game is the shit and is def. a classic, I dont know why Jaffe thinks know one would know the game. Pleaseee
