Nintendo preparing Wii 2 for GDC reveal?
There have been rumors of a new home console from Nintendo for a couple of years. Some thought it would be an HD upgrade on the Wii, while others thought it would be a Wii 2. None have proven true… yet.
Whatever the case, Nintendo execs are now starting to talk about it. Nintendo America boss Reggie Fils-Aime discounted the HD theory last month, and his boss Satoru Iwata has now backed him up, saying:
If asked if making the Wii compatible with high definition – just making it compatible with high resolution – will get players throughout the world to buy it, I would of course say ‘do you think it would sell with just that? It needs something new’.
Now comes news from VideoGamer that suggests developers are already working on games for a new Nintendo platform, which could be unveiled at GDC 2010 in early March. A source claimed:
Just heard a rumour that you may be interested in: Nintendo are going to announce a new platform at GDC. Some devs have already started work on it.
That doesn’t make it clear whether it’s a new home console or handheld, but I’d assume a home console is next on Nintendo’s to-do list. This is merely a rumor at this stage but it makes GDC 2010 a whole lot more interesting all of a sudden.

It’ll be a new DS.
There’s been so many rumours about it I’d be surprised if it isn’t announced soon.

Nintendo showed very little creativity in the Wii, in comparison to their first few consoles. I wish to be impressed…

me_, if you’re referring to the DSi XL then that’s already been announced and prepped for a March release in Europe.
However, I guess this could be to do with its release in the States. Which would be an anticlimax to say the least.

@Dave
It’s not the big DS, it was a new thing entirely. Based on NVidias new ARM CPU.
It was just a rumour but I’d put my money on a new DS before a new Wii.

Interesting. That rumor passed me by but having read http://www.brightsideofnews.com/news/2009/10/13/nvidia-tegra-wins-contract-for-next-gen-nintendo-ds.aspx I agree with you. It looks like this could be the successor to the DS. If so, I can’t see it being announced at GDC. Later in the year, but not quite yet.

My bet is Wii HD. 3 years late to the party, but I bet it sells.

I hardly believe the retirement home people with their cataracts will hardly tell the difference.
.
Why offer “motion plus” to people that lack it to begin with

Wii 2 will not sell well.
Casual people (Not even gamers) will not upgrade their consol that often. Most only bought it for wii sports and they are sitting in places like Doctors offices, dentist offices and even the gymnastics place my kids go to has one.
Good luck Nintendo. You wont see me getting another one.

fool me once

Yeah but its that Damn Zelda franchise.
It always makes me go back.

@SW,
I was really hoping Nintendo would just fail with the wii so they would become a third party developer for multiple systems like Sega. After the Gamecube it appeared so for a bit.

“fool me once” LOL
Exactly.
DS is long over due for next gen.
February 4th, 2010
Next Zelda game will be a Motion Plus Exclusive (will only work with a Montion Plus add-on)
I can Predict…Motion Plus will be the best selling add-on of all time
February 4th, 2010
Not really Roca.
There are only two or three games that use it and it’s been out for a long time.
It was a waste of $20 and i won’t buy any more of them.
February 4th, 2010
I know its been out, but a Major Wii game being playable only with the Motion plus..I think sales are going to be insane (if they dont bundle it with the game)
February 4th, 2010
Thats borderline criminal.
February 4th, 2010
Meh, that sucks.
Oh well, homebrew is all my wii is ever going to see then…
February 5th, 2010
Will they call it the Wii2?
I kinda liked the fact that nintendo had a different name for each console.
I don’t mind it for the playstation 1,2 and 3.
Allthough I hope they dont call their next console the PS4. Doesn’t sound right, if you ask me.
