Sony teases PS2 backwards compatibility on PS3 again

February 3, 2010

Sony teases PS2 backwards compatibility on PS3 again One of the biggest criticisms about the PS3 is the lack of PS2 backwards compatibility. Most gamers may not care about this feature, but the hardcore gamers certainly have this high on their wish list.

I have the launch 60GB PS3 so I have no problem playing PS2, and PSOne games. Those unfortunate souls who purchased a newer model cannot play PS2 games on the PS3. However, they still can play PSOne titles.

Sony removed the Emotion chip, which was the processor for the PS2 and later removed the emulation software from the 80GB PS3 model.

In a recent interview with IGN, Peter Dille, senior VP of Playstation may have inadvertently spilled the beans on PS2 games coming back to the PS3. Dille indicated that Playstation team is working hard on brining more PSOne and PS2 games to the PSN store.

He stated:

From our side, we’re going through our own studio organization and trying to make sure all these old games are out there so that we can lead by example, but we’re also communicating with all the third-parties about the success of the Final Fantasy games, and other PS1 and PS2 classics.

This comment further supports the story I reported back in September regarding the leaked secret SEGA/Sony meeting notes. According to those notes, Sony revealed to SEGA, plans to bring PS2 games back on the PS3. SEGA also talked about bringing Dreamcast games to the PSN store.

Bringing back hard to find games like Final Fantasy VII with a manual in a digital form is great. However, the big question is- will Sony bring back the PS2 emulator so gamers can play off the shelf games? The answer is probably no as there is money to be made here.

  1. phranctoast:

I thought for a second you were going to forget the leaked sega Sony minutes. Lol.

The new platinum game mentioned recently was also in the same leaked report.

This further supports the truth behind that report.

  2. ncaissie:

Sony can shove it up their ass.
No way will I pay their prices for PS2 or PS1 games.
If they do this without letting us play disc games I will be one of the first to mod my ps3s when it is hacked and not buy any games.

  3. Barnabe Jones:

Honestly. I would like to see more HD updates like the GOW collection. I’ll happily fork over $20 for HD, 60fps, and trophies.

  4. CarlB:

“will Sony bring back the PS2 emulator so gamers can play off the shelf games? The answer is probably no as there is money to be made here.”

    Sad but true.

  5. Zoar:

Maybe when the PS4 comes out, all the PS2 games will be sold on the PSN.

  6. phranctoast:

I agree with bj. I want a sotc/ico re release in HD.

  7. FahKinSuPah:

Sony really needs to get on the ball here and work on that BC. I remember reading an article on here at some point last year about them working on a software update that would alow the cell to emulate the emotion chip. It’s totally possible, so they need to get it done already.

I still own 2 PS2 (one fat, one thin) so it’s not like I really need to use a PS3 to play PS2 games anyway but its one hell of a feature that should have never been taken out UNLESS they had the software emulation running already.

I still like the idea of being able to download PSX games on the PS3 though. there are some decent games there and the prices aren’t all that bad. FFVII for $10? You can’t beat that. I might have to buy it cause my FFVII disc 1 is slightly scratched. It’s easily worth it though.

  8. phranctoast:

BC back in the PS3 with emulation rather than re-purchasing games is key. I’d only re-purchase games if they did an HD re-release like the GOW collection did. And it would be rare. The only other game besides the two I earlier mentioned that could benefit from a HD re-release would be Resident Evil 4 imo.

  9. ncaissie:

“Honestly. I would like to see more HD updates like the GOW collection. I’ll happily fork over $20 for HD, 60fps, and trophies.”

Not me, I agree GOW was a treat but I never heard of any other games like that and will not invest $20 to find out.
    I don’t even like paying $20 for PS3 games.

“FFVII for $10? You can’t beat that. ”

Sure you can! Walk into any pawn shop and buy it for $2-$5.

  10. phranctoast:

    “I don’t even like paying $20 for PS3 games.”

    Did you mean ps2 games?

  11. Roca.:

“The only other game besides the two I earlier mentioned that could benefit from a HD re-release would be Resident Evil 4 imo”

uhmmm I hope Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2 get a HD remake before KH3 comes out. same goes for the Sly Cooper series (since I never play any of them but heard great things about the franchise/developer)

I also would like to see both “Mark of Kri” and “Rise of the Kasai” in HD as I missed both of them.

Also if they are going to make Dark Cloud 3, then DC1 and DC2 in HD would make sense (add to it Rouge Galaxy since it was made by the same dev) since DC2 and RG were 2 of the best PS2 RPGS.

  12. Roca.:

$5-$10 for PS1 classic are good. specially when you can remote play it or transfer it to your psp to play on the go

  13. phranctoast:

“I also would like to see both “Mark of Kri” and “Rise of the Kasai” in HD as I missed both of them.”

You didn’t miss much. The games has some unique aspects for their time, but nothing ground breaking. It annoyed me fighting what amounted to the same tentacle boss character over and over.

Come to think about it, RE4 on RE5′s engine would be preferable over just a simple HD bump.

  14. JofaMang:

I hated Mark of Kri. Just a mindless button masher. God of War accomplished far more in the genre than that game did.

  15. phranctoast:

I liked the stealth missions and using your bird to scout. That’s about it.

  16. Barnabe Jones:

It seems like I played the Mark of Kri 100 years ago, but I remember enjoying it. The bird and stealth parts are the only things that I can remember about it though. Come to think of it, I don’t think I ended up beating it.

    Ncaissie,

I missed FF VII the first time around. I looked around on the internet for it before the PSN release, and people were selling it for hundreds of dollars. I was really happy to buy it for $10.

I still haven’t beat it. I’m up to fighting the Emerald, Ruby, and the other weapons. So close to the end though.

  17. Roca.:

    @BJ,

you might want to finish the game before fighting Ruby and Emerald…once you finish the game there is still more to do.

here is what you will need to beat Emerald and Ruby.

    - Golden Chocobo
    - Knights of the Rounds Materia(Summon – Red)
    - 3 Phoniex Materia (Summond – Red)
    - 3 Mime Materia (Command – Yellow)
    - Final Attack Materia (Ability – Blue)
    - All Materia (Ability – Blue) for all healing spells
    - your 3 Best Character needs to be all at level 99 with their Final Limit Break.
    - at least 20-30 mins of spare time. (without all this, it would have probably taken you hours and you would have died at the end)

I know this by heart since I beat the game like 15 times already…most recently after Crisis Core came out

  18. ncaissie:

$10 Max if I had the disc in hand so I can resell it.
I have said it before I don’t agree with digital download for games. You get $0 resale value and the prices do not reflect that in any way.

It would have to be under $5 for the good games. Otherwise Sony can shove it!

And no I didn’t mean Ps2 games. LOL Sorry but I’m cheap that way. I have three girls to put through university so they don’t have the loans I had to pay.

  19. The Future of Sega:

If Sony re-releases HD games, here are the game they need to re-release:

    Sega Dreamcast/PSN

    1. NFL Blitz 2000 HD

    2. Mortal Kombat Gold HD

    3. Sonic Adventure HD

    4. NBA 2K1 HD

    5. Sega Swirl HD

    PS/PS2/PSN

    1. Mortal Kombat Trilogy HD

    2. Spyro The Dragon: Ripto’s Rage HD

    3. Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped HD

    4. DBZ Trilogy HD

    N64/PSN

    1. Goldeneye 64 HD

    2. Super Mario 64 HD

    3. Zelda: Majora’s Mask HD

If Sony can accomplish 100% of what I’ve demanded, I will be the happiest customer in the world!!!!!!!!!!! :)

  20. Barnabe Jones:

    Sega,

I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for the N64 games. I would say that maybe they’ll make their way to the Wii, but the Wii can’t even do HD. :)

    Roca,

I wasn’t using a guide or walk-through, I did peak at one for a few things, but I just wanted to try and play it as I went through. I just need to go back to it at some point.

    ncaissie,

Yeah I hear you. I think Capcom’s PSone games are actually over $10.

  21. Roca.:

FF7 is one of the Best RPG of all time..

  22. ncaissie:

I highly doubt they will update those games to HD.
I think GOW was the exception to the rule.

  23. ncaissie:

    Maybe FF7 but that’s all.

  24. phranctoast:

I was hoping for the SOTC considering it would be great prior to The Last Guardian coming out.

  25. Roca.:

“I was hoping for the SOTC considering it would be great prior to The Last Guardian coming out.”

yup, and since not everybody got to play the game. personally I never got to play Ico, and its going for over $100 now days. as for SOTC, great game and deserve a HD remake..(I never got to beat it because I couldnt figure out how to climb to the top of a Collossus

  26. phranctoast:

“(I never got to beat it because I couldnt figure out how to climb to the top of a Collossus”

    The last colossus?

  27. JofaMang:

I think my PS2 copies of ICO and SotC may be part of my retirement portfolio.

  28. Roca.:

    Phranc – “The last colossus?”

yeah..its takes like 30mins just to get halfway to the top

  29. phranctoast:

Yeah, I struggled with the last one as well. I was having issues jumping from hands to hands. Once I figured it out (which turned out, I was making it a lot harder than it was supposed to be) the rest was a breeze.

  30. Barnabe Jones:

I’m half way though Shadow of the Colossus. Never played ICO.

  31. CarlB:

Lack of last gen bc kind of deflates the whole ‘It only does everything’ campaign, they should put this back in.

  32. twilight:

I am one of the people who never understood the issue with Ps2 backwards compatibility. Ps2 is still being sold. If you want to play Ps2 games, just get a Ps2 system. I did not get a Ps3 to play last generation games. I want to play games with the most cutting edge technology.

  33. Liquid:

read the interview with peter dills and he explains how everything fits into that tagline. . . its on IGN carl

  34. FahKinSuPah:

    @Roca RE:FFVII Weapons

lol your setting him up to die lol.

Probably one of the best characters to use for the weapons is Yuffie… She kinda sucks but you NEED her ultimate weapon. It does damage based on enemy strength in relation to her own strength. The stronger the enemy is the more damage she will do. Since Ruby and Emerald are the DEFACTO badasses in FFVII Yuffie will deal 9999 damage without a problem.

Do NOT use Knights of the Round on Ruby weapon. He will counter with a move that will kill you.

Final attack materia is a MUST. To get that you have to have a really good chocobo and race constantly until you win enough at the golden saucer. You will eventually recieve it as a gift. You can also win it as a prize but I never got it that way. To use Final Attack you have to pair it with something usueful like Revive or Pheonix. When you die they will automatically be performed, and both can save your life lol.

Ruby can also permanently remove to people from battle. The best way to counter this is to fight battles until 2 party members are already dead, then initiate the fight with him. At one point it will be safe to revive them. I forget exactly when though lol.

3 words for you. Aire Tam Tsom. Might not make sense at first but read backwards it comes out as Most Materia. It’s a special attack of Emeralds. once you got him down far enough he will start to use it. This attack deals damage based on how much materia each character has equipped. In other words if one character has every slot full of materia they will die from this attack. Although Final Attack linked with Pheonix is a good counter for this. Just make sure that character has high MP at all times.

Do not use Vincent lol… If you kill enough enemies his ultimate attack will eventually deal 9999 but his limit break makes him a horrible choice for the weapon fights.

I’d start off with Cloud and Yuffie. The last choice would either be Tifa or Cid.

Quadra magic link to Bahamut Zero… Awsome combo there for either weapon.

The Ultimate weapons for your party are pretty important too.. can’t ever forget them.

  35. CarlB:

twilight, I think the main things are that this is the first sony console that doesn’t have last gen compatibility, they had it before, then removed it, and now the possibility is strong that they will charge money for the same games over PSN w/o putting bc back in. Nobody buys a next gen console to play last gen games, but having the ability to play those classics you already bought on that next console is very nice.

Liquid, I read it before I posted that comment. It’s why I posted that comment. Dille states in answer to PS2 games being made available for sale on PSN: “it’s just found money”… which means the games are in demand, but putting PS2 BC back into PS3 would cut into the money they could make. It’s sad really, considering all those who do have extensive PS2 game libraries, like myself, cannot enjoy these using the PS3 they already own.

  36. Roca.:

nice input but you are wrong here:

but I was just telling him the basics and let him figure out how to use/combined what I listed up there so he can feel that he at least achieved something on his own…you broke everything down to him which will make life easier for him

btw Knights of the Round works on both, I have done multiple times.

  37. The Future of Sega:

Well the hell with buying PSN shit online then. If they can’t supply my needs, then I’ll go elsewhere. It’s just as simple as that.

  38. The Future of Sega:

Ermm…fortunately I purchased the last full B/C 60 GB original PS3 in stock at Gamespot 3 years ago, the day after christmas. :)

So I guess that makes me S.I.L. (Shit in Luck) :P

  39. FahKinSuPah:

    @roca

Knights works on ruby but he counters with a very nasty attack that can drop your party easily

  40. FahKinSuPah:

I wouldnt mind seeing tomba 1& 2 up on PSN. whenever they get around to it i guess

  41. phranctoast:

“Lack of last gen bc kind of deflates the whole ‘It only does everything’ campaign, they should put this back in.”

    Damn…why won’t it felate me?

  42. ncaissie:

    @Carlb
“Nobody buys a next gen console to play last gen games, but having the ability to play those classics you already bought on that next console is very nice.”
Yes and no. Sure no one buys next Gen “just” to play last Gen games. But I did want a PS3 for the ability.
I missed the Ps2 library and wanted to play them without paying current Gen prices. Also without having to buy a second consol.
By the time I purchased my ps3 it was already out and people were asking to much for the ones with BC in them.

  43. CarlB:

NC, I agree. Apparently, at least according to phranc, the demand for PS2 BC in the PS3 is right up there with phallacio now.

  44. phranctoast:

I for one love my PS3 60 gig (and fellatio) and can honestly say it was a great decision at the beginning of the generation to have it due to lack of games and some very good ps2 games coming out after the release of the ps3. Now….It’s a nice feature to have but hardly deal breaking (or calrb wouldn’t have one).

I don’t see myself buying too many ps2 games if this was their angle. If they redid the games at a native HD resolution with all the improvements, that may be a different story.

  45. JofaMang:

    heheheheh you said fellatio

  46. CarlB:

    “or carlb wouldn’t have one”

…”lowered expectations”, but God of War Collection didn’t disappoint.

  47. phranctoast:

    “heheheheh you said fellatio”

    Yes I did. ;)
    and for more laughs… cunnilingus

  48. Roca.:

    @Funkah

did you add me to your PSN friend list?

  49. ncaissie:

I don’t want every PS2 game but I don’t think Sony should be ripping us off by making us pay $20 or more.
I don’t want those games that bad.
Also If they do that I will only buy used games from now on. Including GOW3.

  50. Roca.:

idk about Canada, but here used games (with a fucked up case or caseless) are usually $5 dollar cheaper than a new game..I would rather buy new

  51. ncaissie:

That depends on where you get them.
If you buy them from people online you get them 50% or less.
EB games is $5 -$10 cheaper then new so yeah that wouldn’t make sense on games $40 or more.

  52. FahKinSuPah:

    @Roca

No i didn’t get to add you yet. Since i’m currently balls deep in Mass Affect 2 I ain’t even touching my PS3 lol.

    Almost done it though…

    Such an awsome game!

  53. CarlB:

Agreed. ME2 rocks. Did you you get both the free Cerberus Network downloads yet?

Also found a hilariously titled piece yesterday, from the Playstation Team even:

PS3 Perspective: Mass Effect 2 is Better than Uncharted 2: One Sony fan makes the case for the Xbox 360 exclusive… Deal with it, fanboy.

    http://ps3.ign.com/articles/106/1066463p1.html

  54. Roca.:

that’s a one man’s opinion. im pretty sure U2 has almost twice as many perfect scores as Mass Effect 2, that speaks volume!

  55. CarlB:

Mass Effect 2 has 92 critic reviews while Uncharted 2 has 104, and both have a 96 on Metacritic.
Considering Mass Effect 2 has been out for less than a month, whereas Uncharted 2 has been out for almost half a year, that’s not bad.
