What do Fallout New Vegas, Oblivion, and Fallout 3 have in common?

February 4, 2010

What do Fallout New Vegas, Oblivion, and Fallout 3 have in common? It was March 2007. I sat with nearly seventy hours of my life wasted away playing The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Numerous times had I reset my Playstation, plagued by the constant lock-ups this game had offered. My character couldn’t take 5 steps without my gut twisting in fear, knowing that it’s just a matter of time before the game was to lock up again. “Perhaps they’ll get it right on the next game,” I said to myself.

A year and a half later, I sat playing Fallout 3; its similarities to Oblivion were striking. Every little bit of the game was tweaked in a manner that made the whole game feel different, that is, different apart from the constant freezing during V.A.T.S battles and loading screens. Often times I’d find myself starring through the loading screens, wondering if this were the next “crash” or if it were just a longer than normal load. “Perhaps they’ll get it right on the next game,” I said to myself.

I sat this morning, watching the Fallout New Vegas trailer. The post-nuclear music immediately sends chills through my spine, as it reminds me of utter frustration.

Although I can’t speak with certainty about whether New Vegas will be burdened with the same problems, I can say with certainty that the problem still exists in Oblivion and Fallout 3. If such a problem were found, wouldn’t you think Bethesda would have been kind enough to release a patch for the game? Not likely, as they’ve been busy selling us add-ons to the faulty games we’ve already purchased.

Will the first 50 hours of Fallout New Vegas be good enough to outweigh the frustration you’ll receive in the latter portion of the game? Myself, for one, won’t be finding out.

    developer, gameplay & scale

I actually had no trouble with Oblivion. I did have the GOTY edition, so maybe that made a difference.

FallOut 3 on the other hand, crashed more than any other game I’ve played.

From what I’ve heard the FallOut3 GOTY edition is just as bad. Bethesda is ignoring the problem, and has yet to address it. Given the delay of the DLC there really is no excuse for this.

I haven’t bought any of the DLC and don’t plan on it. It’s a shame too because I actually enjoyed the game. Oh well, there are plenty of other good games out there.

I have no plans on getting them…?

  4. ncaissie:

I have Fallout 3 with the lunchbox and bobble head and it don’t recall this problem.
I only played a couple of hours though.
A fiend of mine borrowed it and played to the end. I’ll ask him if he had that problem.

  5. ncaissie:

    friend not fiend lol

  6. Roca.:

I got the lunchbox and bubble head too…I got it when Circuit City was closing all their store. it only cost me $26.99

  7. Barnabe Jones:

I don’t think Bethesda isn’t the incredible developer everyone make them out to be. I love their games, but they are notoriously buggy. People give them a pass though.

Also their failure to address problems with their games is deplorable. If you do a shoddy port, at least make an effort to fix it.

    Sega patched Bayonetta
    Atari patched Ghost Busters

But Bethesda just pretends the problem doesn’t exist. I’m not sure I would buy another game from them. At least not a new one. I’ll wait and buy it used.

  8. phranctoast:

Lets not give Sega any credit for patching Bayonetta. That was all Sony. To Sony’s credit they eliminated the Load times which according to reviews were “unforgivable” before.

  9. Barnabe Jones:

Yeah you are right. But at least it was fixed. Supposedly the game actually had to load when you picked up an item.

Bethesda had the content ready to go, along time before the games release though. There is absolutely no excuse for it.

  10. ncaissie:

My friend said it froze maybe 2 times.

“May be twice if I recall correctly… ”

I paid $30 as a door crasher sale at EB games.

  11. JofaMang:

I experienced some crashing and pausing until the first patch. After that it ran smooth like butter. 80gb software BC model (4usb ports).

  12. Ghost:

I think the only time oblivion or fall-out 3 froze was when I played for hours on hours at a time with out breaks. Anyway looking forward to Fall-Out New Vegas.

  13. ncaissie:

I’m still looking forward to Fallout 3!
Kids, I love them but they are a handful.
    GOW 1 & 2 comes first.

  14. ncaissie:

If I can get past those dam 3 headed dogs.

  15. Ghost:

hey ncaissie whats your psn id?? mine is ghostinchains if you want to add me?

  16. phranctoast:

    Ncassie.

Use the L1 and square combo. Go for the small ones first. Block a lot. They’ll spin into you a lot and you have make sure you’re always aware if the large ones presence and moves. I found that by keeping the small ones from getting larger I could control them fairly well with poisidens rage.

  17. iNOTlistening:

What are you people smoking? You cant handle a game with so much content to crash once in a while? Your going to pass up on it cause it “might crash” Ive put in 80 hours in fallout 3 and it crashed about 5 times. I have patience I can turn it off and turn it back on and it doesn’t bother me, some of you by your comments look like you have no patience at all. Have fun not playing an awesome game because it “might” crash.

  18. Barnabe Jones:

Give ‘em hell ncaissie! We’re all routing for you. ;)

btw… there are MUCH harder bits coming up.

  19. Roca.:

when I first played the game back in 2005, it took me 3 weeks (on Hard) to beat that damn 3-headed dog and its puppies

I still have nightmares of what I went through

  20. Funkinstien:

Bethesda isn’t even making new vegas obsidian is. And my experience with obsidian games crashing is worse than Bethesda games

  21. Saber_HAHAha:

The only game of these which I have is Oblivion, which I borrowed from a cousin a few weeks ago in exchange for MGS4 (not even finished the damn game, and nothing was compelling me to, but I’ll give it a shot after we trade back). Never had any freezing problems with it so far. It actually has nice graphics and an incredible artstyle, for such an old game.

Never played it since I got MW2. That’s the ONLY game I find myself playing nowadays… and I haven’t even started the single-player campaign past the training stage. All I have to say is that is PISSES-ME-AAAUUHF when every game you join is half-over, and you find your time several thousand points behind the other. Once I joined a game, spawned 20 feet away from a sentry gun, and that was the game-winning kill for them. Ridiculous…

  22. Saber_HAHAha:

Your *team* several thousand points behind, pardon thee typing hiccup.

  23. Barnabe Jones:

I just sent a message to metacritic. Expect the meta to rise. It’s below:

    Howdy,

I happened to notice that the White Knight Chronicles review page was missing a few reviews. I double checked to make sure they were on you approved reviewer list.

I’m not sure if this is an oversight, or if it just hasn’t been updated yet. I just thought I’d send a quick email to be sure.

Links to the reviews are as follows:

  24. CarlB:

Even God of War Collection and Uncharted 1 & 2 froze on me in game… though the consequences weren’t nearly as monumental as they would be in major RPG’s like Fallout 3/Oblivion (if you had not saved for a long time). They may have patched those games sufficiently by now as well, it’s just annoying to play a new game, get to really enjoying it, then have it freeze up on you. In any case, this is why I choose my 360 for all the multiplat titles, I just don’t want to take the chance.

  25. Roca.:

lmaoo…I kind of see this one coming

  26. Ghost:

Well I guess I would rather have my game freeze up on me every now again than having to worry about if every time I turn my system off that it might not turn back on again. Oh btw I would love to see a link with some numbers verifying or at least showing some kind of data about how all these games freezes on the PS3 and not the 360 as you claim? I’m sure I can find quite a few proving and talking about the 360′s hardware failure. :D

  27. Dirk:

“it’s just annoying to play a new game, get to really enjoying it, then have it freeze up on you. In any case, this is why I choose my 360 for all the multiplat titles, I just don’t want to take the chance.”

Thats a very interesting comment. From what I understand its usually the opposite thats universally the case. There are sites dedicated to aiding people on freezing issues on the 360. Some speculate the freezing issue stem from the DVD tray or overheating.

Oblivion froze on my 360 during almost every load screen pretty far into the game after I became a vampire.

  28. CarlB:

    lol… denial.

  29. Dirk:

    “lol… denial.”

    Oh, the irony… lol :)

  30. CarlB:

Oh, the double irony… lol :D

  31. ViRuS:

    Gawd I hated Fallout 3.

The guy can’t walk around in a circle properly. Well he can, but it doesn’t look natrual.

Also the story was shit. Ok, I get it, your daddy is gone. Just give up all ready.

So it goes to say I won’t be wasting another 4 sheets on this game just so I’ll give it away again. :)

  32. FahKinSuPah:

Problem is you played them both on PS3. Seriously, the PS3 versions of both games were buggier than the 360 versions.

I played them both on 360.

Oblivion didn’t crash on me at all. I suppose I didn’t give it a chance to since I only played for like 10 hours when I got extrememly tired of it. I can’t get into Elder Scrolls games for some reason… even though I love RPGs.

Fallout 3.. well I played that one for over 100 hours and I it froze on me 1 time while in VATS.

Dont get me wrong.. I did see ALOT of other bugs and glitches in Fallout 3, just not the crashing and freezing…

  33. phranctoast:

I only had two games crash on me. Warhawk when it was in Beta and GOW collection, which is annoying me.

  34. Liquid:

hey george gardner will you pinch my nipples and kiss my neck? im a guy ;)

  35. Liquid:

    wtf ^^

  36. phranctoast:

    wtf is putting it lightly!!!!

  37. Liquid:

dont mind that, my co worker is a joker. . . excuse me lads. im just going to kneecap him with a ballpoint pen. . . er anyway yeah fallout 3 lol

  38. FahKinSuPah:

Smooth move Liquid. Your comming on a little too heavy aren’t you?

  39. Roca.:

    @ Dirk

you will get use to hearing it from CarlB. Personally I just ignore his lies.

    @ FahKin

did you add me yet? lol
I also played Oblivion and I didnt experienced any crashes.

  40. phranctoast:

“dont mind that, my co worker is a joker.”

    That’s classic!!!!

  41. ncaissie:

    LOL thanks for the tips.
    PSN is ncaissie

  42. ncaissie:

    I’ll add you tonight Ghost.
Tonight is Smallville night and I’ll be meeting up with SV fans in Home. If anyone wants to show up it’s a 7pm (Ottawa, New York) time.

  43. JofaMang:

I had oblivion + shivering ilses for the PS3, and never experienced any freezing or crashes.

  44. Roca.:

    @ncaissie

im down for it, whats your address?

  45. ncaissie:

    LOL PSN Home.

  46. Liquid:

    fahkinsupah

yes maybe, but if it was me i would of dropped the foreplay and went all in lol

  47. CarlB:

“Personally I just ignore his lies.”

Right, so now phranc is lying about God of War Collection freezing as well? lol

  48. Roca.:

well you just dont have any credibitly, btw Bioshock 2 (on 360) is plagged by freezing issues while playing online. $50 XBL fee can’t even have a stable online game on one of the biggest title

  49. CarlB:

Neither do you, btw at least it’s not as major as the quality issues the PS3 version of Bayonetta had upon release, and it’s been the best reviewed PS3/360 multiplat game this year (at least on 360 that is). And if Sony, arguably the best developer/publisher of games, can have these issues with it’s major exclusive titles without them even going online, then I guess it’s a little bit more understandable for some multiplats in online only.

  50. bjerkass:

For starters the ps3 sucks. I have tes4 inthe ps3 xbox 360 and pc. This is one of the bestgames I have ever played. The ps3 does freeze alot because it is a ps3 not because of the games. Please I am asking you to play the game on a pc or xbox. You. Are missing out
