Gran Turismo 55 million milestone – can GT5 meet expectations?

February 9, 2010

Gran Turismo 55 million milestone - can GT5 meet expectations? Polyphony Digital, the studio behind the Gran Turismo franchise recently sent out a press release celebrating the sales milestone of 55 million units sold to date. This news is fascinating, but it also foreshadows the coming release of Gran Turismo 5.

Gran Turismo 5 has been in development for quite some time, approximately three years to date. The game was set to release in March of this year in Japan before it was delayed. However, the new release date has been confirmed for Fall of this year.

Looking at Polyphony Digital’s press release, it’s interesting that the franchise has managed to move 55 million units to date. Also, pretty much all of the major iterations (1,2,3,4) managed to sell about 10 million units on average.

I’m surprised by the fact that GT 5: Prologue, a tech demo managed to sell over 4.6 million units. It’s even more interesting to see that the PSP release of Gran Turismo managed to sell 1.8 million units despite harsh criticism for lack of a single player career mode.

It almost seems like the any game with the name Gran Turismo sells well. However, I have some doubts if Gran Turismo 5 will be able to continue its tradition of hitting about 10 million units. The PS3 userbase is still small and the highest selling game on the platform, COD:MW2 was at 6.7 million units.

GT5 will probably do well, but it certainly has its work cut out later this year.

  1. Sorral:

    @Mike
    MW2 sold 6.7M copies on the PS3? typo?

  2. ncaissie:

    GOW 3 will hit 10M no problem. So will GT5.
    If not then the PS3 owners are stupid and don’t deserve to own a PS3.

    LOL I sound like Ivan. I love this series.

  3. Barnabe Jones:

    Sorral, No sadly that’s a fact.

    I would like to apologize on behalf of PS3 owners everywhere. They passed up Uncharted 2 – a near perfect game – for a repeat of COD IV. Idiots!

  4. Roca.:

    the funny thing is GT1 (PS1) sold more than all 3 Forza games combined…

  5. ncaissie:

    “They passed up Uncharted 2″
    Not yet, I will get it later.

  6. ncaissie:

    @Roca
    Not according to those numbers. Are you seeing something I’m not?

  7. Roca.:

    @ncaissie
    the Forza franchise (all 3 games) are just closing in to 10M units sold. GT1 sold over 10M units alone

  9. ncaissie:

    doh, Missed the word Forza there. I didn’t sleep well and it’s really showing today lol.

  10. ncaissie:

    I was thinking GT

  11. navyste:

    I prefer the Forza games, its not that i dont like GT im just not really a racing game kind of guy and forza is easier to pick up and play. Maybe this one will be diffrent and i will be sucked in we will wait and see. but i already have AC2 and ME2 to complete and i will probably be picking up BS2 GOW3 FF and AVP in the coming months by then it could be halo reach time, or i could be back at sea.

    Also is ivan dead? this would make me happy

  12. navyste:

    Also the heavy rain demo was amazing but i wonder if i will tire of QTE?

  13. Roca.:

    QTE’s was a small fraction of the demo

  14. phranctoast:

    I’d like to point out that GT3 sold that many on the PS2 and the system had a fraction of the amount of sales the PS3 does right now.

    GT3 came out in April, and July of 2001. The PS2 came out in March and October of 2000.

    anyway.. I’m sick as a dog (flu) so time to rest again.

  15. navyste:

    i thought most of the game was going to be based on QTE’S?

  16. Roca.:

    did you played the demo?

    the only QTEs I experienced was while I was fighting that bald dude in the Hotel. besides that part there were lil/small QTEs here and there but for the most part I was controller the character and choosing my actions

  17. JofaMang:

    The only thing that put me off was R2 for walk, though I got used to it by the time I finished the demo. Otherwise it is exactly what I have been looking for in a spiritual successor to Indigo Proophecy.

    I loaded up my copy of IP after playing the HR demo, and was delightfully surprised by how playable it still is, but woefully dismayed when I found out it doesn’t support widescreen. Apparently it was made before widescreen resolutions were de rigeur options. Oh well, still awesome, heh.

    Totally different topic, my ps3 gave me a scare yesterday. A friend wanted to trade his new slim for my BC/Linux usable model, so i brought it down to his house, hooked it up, and it refused to read any discs. A couple hours later I had to go home with what I thought was a broken PS3, as nothing we did could get it to read a disc. I hook it back up, and popped in WKC, to see it working perfectly fine on the first go, as it is right now.

    The onyl difference between hookups is that he doesn’t have an HD tv, and is using a 32″ SDtv. I can’t see how switching to SD could disable the disc drive, but there you have it.

    WHAT THE HELL MAN.

  18. ncaissie:

    That’s strange.
    I tried hooking up my PS3 to my daughters 27inch SD tv and I couldn’t get it to show picture or sound.
    I figure its the cables but I’m not sure. I tried setting the output options but it didn’t help.

  19. Barnabe Jones:

    That’s really weird.

    I would back up the hard drive now, just to be on the safe side.

    WKCs is pretty good btw. Sure it borrows a lot of different elements from the FF world, but it’s a solid game. The combat is on the easy side, but the worlds are gorgeous, huge, and vivid. Also the online quests are a lot of fun. I’m really liking it.

  20. Roca.:

    when plugging your system to a new tv, hold one the PS3 power buttong for 5 secs (second *beep*) while “turning ON” your system. it will automaticallyy detect the new video source

  21. Roca.:

    Big Snow Storm coming to Boston tomorrow :(

  22. ncaissie:

    “when plugging your system to a new tv, hold one the PS3 power buttong for 5 secs (second *beep*) while “turning ON” your system. it will automaticallyy detect the new video source”

    Thanks for the tip.

  23. Sorral:

    @BJ
    Wow, that’s really sad even though it is Vgchartz, but man I guess I should be glad I am not one of those 6m. Thanks for pointing it out.

    @Ncaissie
    Did you try pressing the power button while the ps3 is off for 5seconds? Without removing your finger for 5seconds into the turning on process (I’m bad with wording stuff like this@@)

    The PS3 should auto adjust itself to the screen type that it is connected to. (480i/p, 720p, etc)

    I know you said that you tried to change the settings themselves, but it doesn’t hurt to try this if you haven’t yet unless the PS3 is for example PAL for video output and the TV is NTSC(US).
    I had a friend with this specific issue where the picture was black and white until we solved it with switching to HDMI cable.

  24. Sorral:

    Ah roca beat me to it. D:

  25. ncaissie:

    “Big Snow Storm coming to Boston tomorrow”
    You can have it. lol
    Mid Feb and things are great here. Not to cold.
    I’ll be happy at the end of March when I know there won’t be any more big snow falls.
    I only had to use the snow blower once this year. The rest of the time was enough for the wife to shovel.

  26. ncaissie:

    Thanks
    I’ll try it again tonight.

  27. Roca.:

    “I only had to use the snow blower once this year. The rest of the time was enough for the wife to shovel”

    lmaoo

  28. FahKinSuPah:

    @Roca

    I take it your from Boston?

    I’m from the Philly area. That storm over the weekend blasted us with 28 inches of snow. Now we are supposed to get hit with another 12-18 inches tonight into tomorrow.

    AND there is already talks of another snowstorm hitting the area this weekend.

    I’m not looking forward to any of it

  29. JofaMang:

    I tested the PS3 again at home with the SD cables, and am getting the same issue everytime. Oh well, I’ll have it till it dies I guess, couldn’t sell it like this, even though everything else is fine. Since I already backed it up before I brought it to my buddy’s place, I took this opportunity to run every rebuild/restore option in the recovery console.

    About WKC, my wife and I were talking about it, and came to the conclusion that the battle system is FFXII for dummies with better summons, and the stat advancement system is from 1995. We both enjoy the game thoroughly, and I will probably poke my head into the online soon. The dialoque is weak and the story is cliche, but the world is beautiful, the graphics are solid without any FPS issues at all for me so far, and there definitely is a fine sense of balance and choice in advancement and fighting styles.

    For now, all my toons can heal and use swords or bows efficiently, focus on single target. I haven’t had a single character death yet, so am concerned that it might be too easy. I am only about 15 hours in, so hopefully it ramps up soon.

  30. JofaMang:

    We got 4″ of snow a few days ago, otherwise it has mostly just been cold and dry here on the prairies.

  31. Roca.:

    @FahKin

    yeah im from Boston…we get so many snow storm is not even funny, im kind of used to it now.

    I think Kevo or BJ is from Philly too, I thought Philly was hit with a snow storm already (2 days ago)

  32. FahKinSuPah:

    @Roca

    You mean the storm that started friday and ended sometime late saturday. dumped 28 inches on us. now were supposed to get more today

  33. Roca.:

    @Jofa,

    lets hope WKC2 will improve upon WKC1

  34. Roca.:

    @FahKin
    enjoy your winter while it last ;)
    lol

  35. Barnabe Jones:

    Jofa,

    Yeah that sums it up pretty well. I have to admit, I got cocky and came pretty close to dying once ;)

    FahKinSuPah,

    I live in Jenkintown (near Abbington) in Montgomery County. Looks like we will be getting hit for the nest 2 days.

    btw.. Montco classes are already closed for tonight! Once again I wiggle out of having to go to class :)

  36. Roca.:

    Jenkintown? Abbington? Montgomery? Montco?
    sounds like you live nowhere near the city lol.

  37. Barnabe Jones:

    I don’t live in the inside the city. 3 miles outside to be exact. I live in the ‘burbs (suburbs) as they say.

    Also Montco is short for Montgomery County. The North East loves to abbreviate everything.

  38. Roca.:

    oh lol…….are you getting Bioshock or Dante today?

  39. ncaissie:

    ““I only had to use the snow blower once this year. The rest of the time was enough for the wife to shovel”

    lmaoo”
    lol It’s true. She does it while she waits for the kids bus.

  40. Barnabe Jones:

    Neither. But if I had to choose, I’d probably pick Bioshock. ;)

    Still have a LONG ways to go in WKC. By the time I’m done, it should be FF time.

  41. Barnabe Jones:

    ““I only had to use the snow blower once this year. The rest of the time was enough for the wife to shovel”

    lol I missed that. But I’m glad it got reposted. That’s hilarious :)

  42. CarlB:

    “the funny thing is GT1 (PS1) sold more than all 3 Forza games combined…”

    Just remember the popular mantra here… more consoles = more software sales.

    Playstation has sold 102 million.
    Playstation 2 (able to play GT1 as well) has sold 138 million.

    By comparison, Xbox only sold 24 million before it’s lifetime was cut short due to legal matters with NVidia. 360 has only sold 39 million to date. Together this is about a fourth of PS1/2 combined console sales.

    Not to mention GT1 was introduced in late 1997 and Forza 1 didn’t come out until mid 2005, eight years later. That’s a lot of time to build a fanbase.

  43. Roca.:

    CarlB

    “Just remember the popular mantra here… more consoles = more software sales”

    I never said it was better, thanks.

    “Playstation has sold 102 million.
    Playstation 2 (able to play GT1 as well) has sold 138 million”

    GT1 was no longer in production before GT2 came out which was a year after (basically a big chunk of its sales came during that first year) and as Phranc stated GT3 sold over 13 million and it came out a year after the PS2 was released.

    “By comparison, Xbox only sold 24 million before it’s lifetime was cut short due to legal matters with NVidia. 360 has only sold 39 million to date”

    yeah and GT5p came out when there was about 15-17 million PS3 out world wide (early 2008) and it has sold more copies than Forza 2 and Forza 3.

    “Not to mention GT1 was introduced in late 1997 and Forza 1 didn’t come out until mid 2005, eight years later. That’s a lot of time to build a fanbase.”

    GT1 made all of its sales during the late PS1 era (1997-1999), it was only in production for a bout a year (until GT2 came out) and it has sold more than all 3 Forza games combined with no fanbase back then (since it was the first one in the franchise)

    dont try to twist the numbers because GT is one of the most successful franchise of all time. GT5p sold more than both forza games even though it was the full game and the PS3 install base was pretty low. the GT franchise has sold more than ALL Final Fantasy Games on PS1 and PS2 combined

  44. Roca.:

    I meant: I never said otherwise *

  45. FahKinSuPah:

    @BJ

    I live inside the hell hole known as Philly. I didn’t imagine that I would run into someone in the Blorge that lives that close to me. I could practically throw a game controller (if I was REALLY angry.) and hit you with it.

    I made it a point yesterday afternoon to get out before the storm hits. I got back in between 4-5 and it still wasn’t snowing here yet. It was actually not half bad out, with the temp probably somewhere close to 40 F. I imagine it didn’t start snowing until sometime after 8. I wouldn’t know cause I fell asleep around 6 or so.

    @Roca

    I hate winter. I hate snow. give me spring and fall all year and I will be happy.

    I remember when GT1 came out. It was incredible. I spent my whole summer playing it. At the time it was the best racing game ever. To this day GT1 had something special to it that none of the other GT games have been able to recreate for me.

    All this talk about new games lol. Bioshock 2 looks incredible and I can’t wait to play it. Is there a demo out for Dante? I have to get abetter look at the game cause I dont know much about it. Not to mention White Knite Chronicles which I have seen mentioned here several times already. i can’t say that I DEFINATELY want that game. It looks friggin awsome.

    I still have to catch up on some games though. With ME2 beaten I haven’t touched my 360 in several days. I did use that $10 bonus I got from amazon to order Assassin’s Creed 2 for $30. I was hoping to get it quickly but with all this damn snow I have no clue when I am going to get it lol.

    I would also like to be able to get Dyntasy Warriors Strikeforce for 360 when it comes out this month. Yeah, i am a big Dynasty Warriors fan. I love RPG’s and Hack and Slash games.

  46. Kevo/Sir_Chubs_Alot08:

    roca im from missouri lol montgomery county, montgomery city though lol

  47. CarlB:

    “I never said it was better/otherwise, thanks.”

    I never said you did, you’re welcome.

    “GT1 was no longer in production before GT2″

    Yes, it was a greatest hits title for many years, which accounted for many sales:

    “it(GT1) was well-received publicly and critically, shipping a total of 10.85 million copies worldwide as of April 30, 2008″

    “yeah and GT5p came out when there was about 15-17 million PS3 out world wide (early 2008) and it has sold more copies than Forza 2 and Forza 3.”

    Yes, after the GT series had already been on the market for eight years longer, through one more entire console generation, having 6 more iterations available than Forza, and the series having been available on 110 million more consoles. Of course the latest iteration is going to be more popular.

    “GT1 made all of its sales during the late PS1 era (1997-1999)”

    Sorry, but it had a greatest hits iteration that sold many millions more copies later on. I know because I owned one of them.

    “A game can earn this distinction (greatest hits) if it meets certain sales criteria within two years after its release”

  48. Roca.:

    w.e your excuse is GT1 sold more copies than all 3 Froza games with no fanbase (since GT1 was the “first in franchise” game) and the franchise managed to outsell the Final Fantasy franchise for the entire PS1/PS2 era which had a bigger fanbase and became a popular hit after FF7.

  49. Barnabe Jones:

    FahKinSuPah,

    Yeah it felt really warm in the late afternoon, but we ended up getting slammed over night. I live in an apartment, so I have to park on the street. Looks like I’m not going anywhere for a while.

    btw class is canceled AGAIN! :)

  50. Roca.:

    the snow storm just started here in Boston, I guess I will be stock at home today playing some Bioshock 2.

  51. JofaMang:

    Sunny and -40 with the windchill. Screw you eastern seaboarders, I want to stay at home all day snowed in.

    Mind you, there hasn’t been a snowday in Winnipeg for almost 12 years (storm of the century, followed by flood of the century for these parts). Not that there hasn’t been huge snowfalls, but our snowclearing crew here is an elite force, heh. It takes an epic snowfall to shut us down. Two winters ago we got 9 feet of snow in 3 days, and only people who commuted from outside the city got to stay home, since the city was very passable.

    Locally, we make jokes and laugh when cities can’t deal with snowfall (like TO or Vancouver) and their “plights” (regular events here) make national news. I think secretly though, it comes from jealousy of not having snowdays :(

  52. CarlB:

    “w.e your excuse is GT1 sold more copies than all 3 Froza games with no fanbase”

    I’m merely saying the GT fanbase and those copies sold were the product of ten years time, not two. Forza’s only been on the market for less than half that time.

  53. Roca.:

    Im just comparing the first GT1 (no 10 year fanbase) to all 3 forza games.

  54. Roca.:

    GT1 = over 10 million
    3 Forza games = close to 10 million

  55. CarlB:

    GT1 = over 10 million in 10 years (including Greatest Hits sales, i.e. ten year fanbase)
    Forza = on the market for less than half that time.

  56. phranctoast:

    Any GT5 predictions? I think it will be the only full release (heh heh) GT game on the PS3. I said 9 million lifetime world wide in the past, but I may want to up that number. Look what GT3 did with a fraction of the PS3 userbase upon release. Maybe GT5 will have similar numbers world wide.

  57. JofaMang:

    Really CarlB, are you trying to argue that GT1 made the bulk of it’s sales AFTER GT2 came out, as well as during the birth of the PS2 era? Dude, you are reaching. Just let it die, Forza can’t compare in anyway to the GT series, and arguing otherwise just supports Roca’s view that you are an xbot troll.

    I don’t really think you are, but this thread (and many recent ones to be honest) is making you look really bad even to me, one of your biggest fans.

  58. twilight:

    I think that GT5 will sell very well whenever they get it out. It looks this game will be a big holiday release for Sony. At least, there are still plenty of Ps3 games to keep busy until then.

  59. Roca.:

    where are you getting your facts from, greatest hits dont stay in production for more than 2-3 years. you will never find a copy of GT1 (new) after 1999-2000.

    and you keep bring greatest hits, wherares both Forza 1 & 2 had thier platinum version, Forza 3 had all the fanbase & hype from the 2 previous game and was also compared to GT5 (which makes the hype even bigger) and it still fell short of getting matching any GT game’s number including GT5p (60 cars, 7 tracks, no career mode, no tuneups, no customization). Even Halo 3 (with all the hype and fanbase from the 2 previous game) is having a hard time reaching GT1′s number (with no fabase, no hype from previous games and no recognitiong similar to the one Halo 3 had)

    Maybe you want to compare Motorstorm sales number to Forza…seems more of a fair comparation :D

    @Phranc
    I will say GT5 lifetime sells will be close to GT3s, it have a high chance of suparsing it since Nascar fans will have no choise but to buy GT5.

  60. twilight:

    Forza is not better than the Grand Turismo series. Grand Turismo leaves Forza standing still.

  61. Roca.:

    @Twilight

    some here seems to have a hard time understanding that!

  62. JofaMang:

    I have several redneck friends that are getting a PS3 just for GT5, for the combinations of NASCAR and PD perfection. My brother hadn’t picked up a video game controller in 15 years, and he bought a PS3 as a blue ray player, but chose the PS3 over standalones so he could play GT5 NASACAR. He has a Dupont shrine in his basement (he’s been comped to over 30 NASCAR races as a Dupont sales rep) and has met Jeff Gordon 3 or 4 times. His daughter’s first word was Dupont.

    Even he is excited for GT5, and he doesn’t usually give a shit for games at all. I can honestly say I have never heard of any such culture around Forza, nor do I ever expect to. There is a reason for that, and the sales, if nothing else, are a strong indicator as to validity of that reasoning.

  63. CarlB:

    “Any GT5 predictions? I think it will be the only full release (heh heh) GT game on the PS3.”

    I agree. I also think it will outsell all three versions of Forza combined, whenever it finally releases.

  64. Roca.:

    hahaha….way to show how pathetic your arguement was.

  65. CarlB:

    You obviously didn’t fathom my key points mentioned earlier:

    The GT series has tremendous advantages:

    1. The series has had at least twice as much time on the market.
    2. The series has been through an additional console generation where Xbox didn’t exist.
    3. The series has been on consoles that sold 100 million+ more than Xbox and 360 combined.

    Based on these overlapping points, it’s obvious the chances are great that GT5 will outsell all Forza’s combined.

  66. Roca.:

    GT1 had no advantage..so shut up and stop being a troll.

    glad everyone here came to shut u up!

  67. CarlB:

    Calm down roca, it’s just a game. GT1′s advantage was that there was no Forza, PGR, or XBox at the time lol. Seriously though, I happily admit it was a great driving simulator and it had no real competition at the time. Without GT, there would have been a great void left in racing games.
