Pachter gives “uninformed opinion” on how Natal vs. Arc battle will shape up

February 9, 2010

There’s a new war on the way. This one isn’t set in some far-off middle eastern country, but right here, in the living rooms of all gamers. Natal vs. Arc is on, almost. With the no-hands-required Xbox 360 motion sensing on one side and the phallic-shaped-dildo PS3 motion sensing on the other.

As usual, chief crystal-ball gazer Michael Pachter has an opinion on how the battle will shape up. Well, kind of. He told Now Gamer:

The key to success with a retrofitted motion controller is penetration. If price points are high, it is unlikely that Natal or Sony’s motion controller will sell many units; if they are very low, they will sell a lot more. Without a meaningful installed base of consoles with the new motion controllers, developers will not be able to cost justify development of games that require motion control. Therefore, it’s a chicken and egg problem.

My uninformed opinion is that Microsoft will price relatively low (around $50), and Sony will price higher (around $100), and that suggests that Microsoft will have greater success. If my assumed price points are off the mark, the outcome will be different.

In other words, he hasn’t got a frickin’ clue. He expects the PS3 Arc to cost more and therefore sell less, while the Xbox 360 Natal will be cheap and sell well. But it could be the other way around. Or the world could end tomorrow. Or aliens could blow the White House up. Or America could elect a black president. Oh, wait.

Patcher is not a very brilliant I see. It is not the price but the value that people give the product. If any of them or both can bring an exciting and new experience to consumers then they will sell a lot. As always, it´s the software that sells the hardware.

  2. oldschool1987:

I think price has near enough everything to do with it. Look at the PS3 when it first came out, it sold fuck all, now with the price drop it’s on the 360′s ass.

  3. harry sachz:

I love Pachter, he’s proof that anyone can get a job like his, regardless of how often you are wrong.

  4. ViRuS:

This Pachter guy is an attention seeking slag.

Always sleverin on to any cunt that will listen.

  5. Barnabe Jones:

The PS3 eye is pretty old technology. Admittedly I bought mine on sale, but it was $20. My guess is the wand thing will cost about the same as a WiiMote.

    If not, forget it.

  6. Saber_HAHAha:

I might not even be picking the Arc up if it is too expensive.

    Random update: I solved a Rubik’s Cube.

  7. ViRuS:

Did you peel off all the stickers Saber?

Thats how I solved mine, lol

  8. ncaissie:

    “phallic-shaped-dildo PS3 motion sensing”

That proves the PS3 will win right there.

  9. ncaissie:

    “Random update: I solved a Rubik’s Cube.”
I use to do it in under two minutes.

  10. ncaissie:

I read a book about 30 pages and it was very easy after that.

  11. twilight:

    Ncaissie, Lol.
The pricing structure along with how well the developers implement the use of the items will be important to whether the Arc or Natal is more successful.

  12. Saber_HAHAha:

    @ all yah guys

Nope, I never peeled the stickers or took it apart. Of course, I never figured it out by myself, either. Youtube. Pogobat. That’s all that needs to be said.

My personal record is around 3 minutes 20 seconds, goodish considering that I just bought it sunday. I bought it because I bet a friend that I could have it solved by a week. He owes me $5 now… but the little bugger won’t pay up…

    Other random news:

Along with my cube, I picked up Zelda: Spirit Tracks. I was just finished the initial HOUR or so of cutscenes and crap, and it froze on me.

    Piss.

  13. Saber_HAHAha:

    “Never saved, btw

  14. oldschool1987:

Spirit tracks is really really good! Completed it a few weeks ago.

So Sony is now trying to get more women and gay men involved in gaming?

  16. CarlB:

They were doing that before w/Flower and Noby Noby Boy… lol.

  17. Roca.:

the prediction is stupid…..The success will be based on quality titles for Arc/Natal. PS3/360 users are more likely to do their research (reviews/previews/demos) and less likely to buy Wii-type of crap/titles.

and of course price will be a major factor initially but if they want to keep the momentum going they will need to put up innovative quality titles and less Wii port or gimmick mini games

  18. Barnabe Jones:

Hey I liked Noby Noby Boy!

It was more of a weird novelty than a game, but at $4 it was priced right.

Flower was great also. Again, it’s not really a traditional game. So I could see how closed minded people wouldn’t get it.

Let me guess, Heavy Rain is for the gays also, right?

  19. Roca.:

I have both and I enjoyed both of them.
Flower was the winner of the Indie Games 2009.

  20. jojo29:

I for one am really not excited about this whole motion sensing deal, and really I don’t really care if either of them fail or not. I mean, it has proven that motion controls work and thus sell aka the Wii…but I also look at the majority of games on the Wii and the only games I would have are Zelda/Mario aka Nintendo titles and prob no more heroes…that’s it…

There is not a whole lot to be excited for in terms of game variety due to the nature of some games still needing and playing better on a controller ie God of War, Uncharted, Warhawk, MAG, Ratchet, etc..

I’m not sold on the mtion controllers for either system, but if I had to pick one, it’d be the Arc, why? Easy, it Sony, and not microsoft, I won’t have to worry about the Arc breaking on me :) Natal will prob RROD the 360, I mean it breaks like a bitch now, and they adding more stress to the system?? Count me out of anything that MS makes…yes that was my MS potshot of the day :) good luck to your systems once natal is released

  21. Roca.:

hey long time no see jojo, but yeah I agree with your comments about the motion cotrollers (Arc and Natal).

  22. jojo29:

Yeah, the websen at work finally blocked blorge, so not really able to post, but, now I got me one of dem here smartphones now, so now I can browse dis here internet thingy..lol

But yeah, I picked me a Motorola Droid and can keep up witht the blogs now :) good to be back and I have been reading up and I see that CAD is finally showing his true colors, writing off the site as crappy now and full of sony fanboys, and happy following the same steps..

What’s funny to me tho, is I joined this site precisely becauuse of the opposite: it was full of blind xbox fanboys that now have bought a ps3 and are gone lol seems my whole “ps3 is the turtle that will when the race” is turning out to be true :)

  23. jojo29:

Freaking predictive txt plus blorges lack of edit button= mispelled word “win” into “when”….lol

  24. Roca.:

yeah all Xbots arguments are kind of a thing of the past now – Price, no games, PS3 games dont sell, more exclusive, XBL vs PSN, Netflix, more new IPs, the lead is shrinking, GTA4 DLCs, 360 lagging behind behind in graphics, etc – soo….not much juice left for them to out up a good arguement against the PS3.

  25. jojo29:

I mean, aside from some good games, why would someone get a 360 over a ps3?? At current prices it totally makes getting a 360 a bad investment…

  26. Roca.:

“At current prices it totally makes getting a 360 a bad investment…”

my buddy Twilight found out the hard way :(

  27. Roca.:

    are you on PSN jojo?

  28. jojo29:

Yes I am, currently rocking the following games:
    PSN ID: Kabroncito29

    In order of playing frequency:
    Bad company 2 demo
    Darksiders
    Uncharted 2
    Assasins creed 2
    Tekken 6
    Dragon age origins
    MAG
    Killzone 2
    God of war compilation

Can’t remember like 2-4 other titles…hehe also watching the big bang theory all 3 seasons

  29. twilight:

    Roca,
    Yes, I certainly did. Lol.

  30. Roca.:

im currently playing Bioshock 2, MAG, Darksider and Borderlands…

  31. CarlB:

“yeah all Xbots arguments are kind of a thing of the past now – Price, no games, PS3 games dont sell, more exclusive, XBL vs PSN, Netflix, more new IPs, the lead is shrinking, GTA4 DLCs, 360 lagging behind behind in graphics, etc – soo….not much juice left for them to out up a good arguement against the PS3.”

yeah all Pbots arguments are kind of a thing of the past now this gen compared to last- price, no games, xbox games don’t sell, more exclusives, PSN vs. XBL, reliability, more new IP’s, it is in the lead, GTA4 and DLC’s, PS3 still lagging behind in multiplatform graphics upon release, etc – soo… not much juice left for them to put a good argument against 360.

  32. Roca.:

^^^^^^^ Jojo, see what I mean, not much juice left to argue so there are left to post silly comments.

    - “all Pbots arguments are kind of a thing of the past now this gen compared to last” – last gen there was even an arguement lol. PS2 is the best console of all time. period

    - “Price” PS3 is a better investment and there is no need to purchase xtra stuff. free BD player, free online, free wifi, built in battery on controller, free charging cable, upgradable HDD

    - “no games” – lol….PS3 put up the best lineup 2 years in a row (2008 & 2009)

    - “Xbox games dont sell” – you said not me

    - “More exclusive” – indeed

    - “PSN vs XBL” – PSN/Home are free..XBL/Gamerooms, not so much ;)

    - “reliability” – twilight’s jasper 360 died within two months. all gamestops have a 360 graveyard in the back room full of dead/defeactive/refurbished 360s. no wonder critics call it the worst reliable console in gaming history

    - “new IPs” – 360 can’t keep up with Sony’s first party studio. thanks

    - “GTA4 DLCs” – coming to PS3 as expected.

    - “PS3 still lagging behind in multiplatform graphics” – sure, that’s why Darksiders, Bioshock 2, FF13, Prototype, Saboteur, Dante’s Inferno, Dead Space, DA:O, Oblivion, Ninja Gaiden 2 and more…all look better on the PS3. PS3 First party exclusive destroys anything on the 360 (both multiplat and exclusive)

    - “Netflix” – lmaooo you skipped netflix?? like I said, not much juice left to argue.

    - “not much juice left for them to put a good argument against 360″ – there is still more (e.i MW2 being hacked to shit, expensive peripherals etc) I just dont feel like writing them all.

  33. CarlB:

    ^^^^^PBots love to argue.

“lmaooo you skipped netflix??” PBots didn’t care for it now it’s worth mentioning… “lmaooo”.

Too busy playing ME2 now to care. Later.

  34. Roca.:

you werent too busy for the rest of the list…and certainly not that much busy to erase netflix. Later

  35. CarlB:

Lists are your area of expertise Roca. Later.

  36. Roca.:

hate and troll are your areas….good to see we can agree on something

  37. CarlB:

Really? Looks like those are currently your areas as well. I own a PS3 and can speak well of it and it’s games here, can you do the same for 360? Nope.

  38. Roca.:

“can you do the same for 360? Nope”

if there was anything good to talk about the console I would…but that piece of shit is has nothing that I can’t get on the PS3 (for free, cheaper and more reliable)

its games? uhmm the 360 have 4 games that I was interested in…
    -Bioshock….came out on the PS3
    -Gears….played on PC
-Lost Odyssey…..one titles I will never get to play
-Alan Wake…if its anything good, I wait the for the PC version.

  39. twilight:

I don’t have anything nice to say about the Xbox360 hardware. The system does have some decent games but most of the titles come out on the Ps3 system as well. The differences in multi-platform games are starting to be very small these days. In fact, a lot of Ps3 games are starting to slightly edge out there Xbox360 counterparts in overall performance. The differences in multi-platform games are not as big as they use to be.

  40. CarlB:

“if there was anything good to talk about the (360) console I would…but that piece of shit…” blah, blah, blah.

By that statement alone you are twice the troll I will ever be. Congrats Roca.

  41. Roca.:

yeah, just because I said the 360 is a piece of shit. look at how many 360 user have had their system died of them and repaired. look at Twilight for example, bought a Jasper 360 during the holiday, 1-2 months later.. the 360 was dead!

by arguing that fact alone, you are twice the troll Ivan will ever be..Congrats

  42. CarlB:

yes, just because you said it was a piece of shit. Ivan? Yes, he had his PS3 go down. Twilight? Yes, he had his PS3 go down. Am I going to call the PS3 a piece of shit because of it? No, only trolls do that… Congrats.
