Disney drops PS3, Xbox for Wii, DS

February 10, 2010

In a wholly unsurprising move, Disney Interactive Studios has decided to limit the number of titles it develops and releases for the “higher end consoles,” the PS3 and Xbox 360, in favor of “casual” platforms such as the Wii and DS. Probably because each and every Disney game is squarely aimed at the young and casual markets.

Disney Interactive games are generally based on Disney movies, and are therefore generally crap. Movies don’t make good video games, and games based on kids’ movies aren’t exactly going to fly off the shelves if released on the PS3 and Xbox 360, consoles generally aimed at and bought by adults.

In a recent earnings call, Disney Interactive CEO Bob Iger stated:

It is pretty clear that the higher end console games are a little bit more challenged in the world where not only they are more costly to produce and market, but there is just much more competition from casual games and games on platforms like the iPhone iTouch [sic] platform.

Disney branded [games] seem to perform better on the Nintendo Wii and DS platforms, and on the platforms that are not to the high-end console games. And so while we’re going to continue to make games for the high end, we’ll be very, very judicious in how many and which ones we choose. But I would say that our focus is going to be little bit more diverse and a little bit less reliant on highest end console games.

Am I bothered? Not really. The only game with Disney’s name on I’ve really enjoyed over the years is Kingdom Hearts, and that’s because of Square Enix’s involvement rather than anything Disney brought to the table.

    Exactly

Hannah Montana is not the only one, I will miss the Marvel games :(

  7. Barnabe Jones:

I think Activision owns the rights to Spider Man. In fact, I think a new game is in the works.

They still own Marvel Ultimate Alliance too. As a RPG/Marvel fan, I have to admit that series is pretty crappy though.

  8. JofaMang:

I haven’t played a marvel heros game since the 4 man arcade action game that came out in the 90s, alongside NBA Jam and Termintor Light Gun games.

  9. Roca.:

    I enjoyed Spider-Man 2, Marver Nemesis and X-Men Legends.

never really cared of Marvel Ultimate Alliance since it was basically X-Men Legends but with the whole Marvel cast…as always Activion milking its games. they should have done something new/fresh

I played one of the X-man Legends at a friend’s house. He kept telling me how awesome the game was, but after playing for a while, I wasn’t impressed at all.

I actually haven’t played the Alliance games, since they are basically the same thing.

The PS2 era Spider Man games were good at the time, but Activision kept pooping sequels out, and they got really tired and old.

They’ll probably re-boot it and make a decent game. Then spawn sequels out of it for years to come. And the cycle will be complete.

    Missed this nugget yesterday~

the best thing is that is coming out this year

  13. Barnabe Jones:

I’d like to say that I want to see larger environments, but I think that would end up making the game even harder. Maybe if they did larger environments, that all had shortcuts that you open up halfway through.

At any rate, I hope the rumor is true.

    Roca (and anyone else),

    How is Bioshock 2?

  15. Roca.:

if you love the first one you are going to love the second one…..I been playing online for the most part and about 20 mins in for the SP mode. playing as a big daddy rocks and being able to go outside of Rapture into the ocean is quite a experience but it just doesnt have the fresh feeling/experience as the first one. overall I will say is as good as Bioshock 1.

  16. Barnabe Jones:

Yeah I noticed that what most of the reviewers said. That it’s great, but really similar to the first. So it doesn’t have the same appeal.

I’ll check it out at some point. Heavy Rain is on the list also… as well as FFXII and GoW3. There is way too much coming out to keep up with it all.

  17. SW:

A few notches below BioShock for me.

Rapture doesn’t have the same cool factor, and the game itself is more of the same. Not bad but not as awesome as it was.

  18. Roca.:

Bioschock 2 has some freezing issues on the 360.
