January NPD 2010: Xbox 360 strikes back
The NPD numbers are out for January and as expected sales are down dramatically from the holiday season. However, things are looking pretty strong even though January is considered to be traditionally dry.
The NPD numbers, which cover the U.S. territory, were released today. The Nintendo Wii remained on top in January moving 465.8k units during the traditionally dry month. The Xbox 360 came in second moving 332.8k units.
The PS3 was on the heel of the 360 trailing by fifty some units selling 276.9k. Sony did confirm today the rumors and speculations that the PS3 inventory is low in many of the retail chains resulting in the “lower†than expected January sales.

Overall, the hardware sales weren’t too bad considering the month. The software sales were actually pretty decent as well with a variety of titles moving 500k plus units across the board.

Mass Effect 2 sold a respectable 572.1k, which wasn’t too bad considering it launched close to the end of the month. MAG wasn’t able to make it to the top 10 list. I suppose its not all that surprising as it also launched only a few days before the end of the month as well. Also, it is a new IP compared to a well established franchise like Mass Effect. However, Sony did confirm today that MAG sold over 500k units via the official blog.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is still going very strong for both the Xbox 360 and PS3. The Xbox 360 version sold 326.7k units, with the PS3 version following closely behind with 259.0k units.

Considering what kind of year 2010 is shaping up to be. We all know PS3 and 360 are going to be moving right now because of the truly incredible games that are comming out in the first quarter this year.
Mass Effect 2 dropped, and thatss an awsome game. Bioshock 2 is also worth mentioning. Dante, White Knite chronicles, God of war 3, Final Fantasy 13, and a few more that i can’t remember right now… All these awsomee games comming out so eary this year. I don’t remember any other year where Jan-Mar was this good for games.
How could the systems not sell at this time?

I called this last week, I said the 360 is going to sell better during the month Jan since there is a massive shortage of PS3 nationwide, the shortage is so bad and the demand is so high that Gamestop is taking reservation on them. $25 down guarantees you a PS3 by the end of the month (feb).
and yeah NPD numbers don’t mean anything.

And I agree with Ncaissie, NPD's numbers have always given half the picture, even when the PS3 had the lead, it meant crap because they are only US numbers.

Yes, there has been a major shortage of Ps3 systems. I experienced this issue. I’m glad to see the Ps3 system selling so well. The U.S. is a major video game market so people tend to talk about NPD numbers quite a bit. However, I’m more interested in the overall world sales numbers.

If it is a good game, then it will sell well on the Ps3. I don’t remember anyone really hyping this game up except for maybe Ivan. Most of us were too busy looking at the other games coming out.

I care if Sony does well because I invested a lot of money in them and not just the PS3. The better a consol sells the more support it gets. It’s just common sense. As for the 360, I saw a pro with 20gig drive for $150. If it drops another $100 then I may pick one up.

I personally comment on these topics to piss off the likes of the xbots. I said before I don’t really care about sales. Quite frankly no one should as it means absolutely nothing to you….at all.

Anyway…I wonder how the shortages affected the PS3 worldwide.
We know for a fact that the 50k difference in NA was more than made up for with Japans numbers.

Actually, I think they had an excellent ad campaign between the tv commercials, websites, wallpaper ads on websites, and in magazines. Not to mention there was a ton of hype and coverage for the game.

I’ve actually never heard much hubbub about MAG for quite a while. Anyone here own it, and how is it? I doubt that I’ll be picking it up, because I’m more interested in action-packed run n’ gun than anything too tactical.
I think that ME2 is the main source of the 360s January victory. If that’s not because of the review scores, it’s cause of my love of “Knights of the Old Republic”… even if that stupid game doesn’t work on my even stupider PC.
