Sony: PS3 supply will continue to be ‘tight’
Rumors of a PS3 supply shortage was confirmed yesterday on the official Playstation Blog. Today, a Sony representative talked a little more about the shortage and issued a word of caution.
Yesterday I mentioned that Sony responded to the NPD numbers by stating that PS3 supply has been exhausted. Today, Patrick Seybold, Senior Director of Corporate Communications talked a little more about the shortage.
According to Seybold, Sony is working hard to meet consumer demand for the PS3 but the supply will be impacted into the next month.
He states:
Yes. The strong demand carrying through the holidays was evident and early in the month we [knew] there was going to be limited supply of the PS3 at retail in January. We’re working very hard with our retail partners to meet consumer interest, but the demand is tremendously high for the PS3 and we expect tight inventory in the coming months.
A quick check around the top game retailers seems to confirm Seybold’s announcement.
Gamestop is showing that the PS3 is backordered currently. Amazon recently put up its limited quantities disclaimer for the PS3. The PS3 had a phenomenal holiday season, but was it big enough to wipe out inventory?
In the US the PS3 did sell about the same amount as the Xbox 360 during the season. However, worldwide total sales for the year shows that the PS3 outsold the Xbox 360 by 2.3 million units. It makes me wonder if Sony has been diverting supply to Europe and Japan.

Sony better get some more out there quickly. I know FFXIII isn’t an exclusive, but a lot of people relate the game to Sony regardless. It could actually cause a little bit of a bump in sales even.

btw Heavy Rain has held onto Amazon’s #1 spot for a few days in a row now. Impressive. Glad to see the game is being received well. Since it’s something bold and new (and not a FPS), I wasn’t sure how it would be received by the unwashed masses.
Also there are 3 PS3 games in the top 10 – Heavy Rain, FFXIII, and GoW3 – respectively. Take that Nintendo shovelware! Ya bastards.
And Amazon also has PS3s in stock.

There is a shortage of Ps3 systems in the U.S. Again, it took me five days just to get ahold of a Ps3 system. As Mike stated in the article,it could it be that Sony didn’t expect the demand of the Ps3 to be so high in America. It is possible that Sony diverted most of their allocations of Ps3 systems to Europe and Japan where they thought the highest demand for the system would be.

Sorry, MS have been a hardware manufacturer for a loooooooong time Carl. Long before there was xbox, there was MS game controllers, mice, keyboards etc.
I know, I had one of the original force feedback joysticks ($250 worth I might add) at was wicked, until it’s motors died
My point being, that MS is just as big in hardware as it is software Carl and I think that was a pretty foolish statement to make.

As for the supply of PS3 drying up at game spot and Amazon, it seems like everywhere else does not have a problem. Best Buy is stocked as well as wallmart and every other outlet that carries the PS3. Of course, it is possible that they are creating demand by purposely making PS3s hard to find, but I doubt it. What they need to focus on is getting as much of them out as possible. Of course, having a shortage due to increase in demand is the problem that every product wishes it has.

I would agree. This would be a valid point just a little over a year ago. The same is not true now, though some may still be unlucky as they are with PS3′s, they should both be covered by warranty:

My point being, I don’t think Microsoft was ever as big in hardware manufacturing as Sony was for decades.

I think you’ve got it, kind of. I try not to insult the console, just point out facts, figures, references, reviews, timelines, etc. Usually fanboys take this as an insult though and launch into a preadolescent rage of profanity and name calling like liquid and “mistress” above (fyi I don’t think you are a fanboy SW). In other news, the both models of the PS3 are sitting pretty at Amazon’s bestsellers:
PS3 120GB is actually two spots above Wii at number 4, and 180 days in the top 100.
PS3 250GB is at number 34, with 105 days in the top 100.
360 is struggling at number 52, 136 days in the top 100, and that is the Winter 2009 Elite Bundle including two games.
The 360 arcade is at number 79, 142 days in the top 100.
I hope PS3 continues it’s upward spiral, because it should only spur Microsoft to do something better with 360.
Microsoft lost an opportunity with FFXIII however. While they did come out with a “Special Edition”, it is not customized with any artwork at all, and it doesn’t even include the FFXIII faceplate. What it does include is a 250GB hard drive, two wireless controllers, wired headset, composite cable, ethernet cable, and the game for $399. Weak sauce.

It’s great that both systems will be getting Final Fantasy. It’ll be interesting to see how well Final Fantasy does on the Xbox360 since this game has mostly been associated with the Ps3 system.

I agree the Xbox360 version bundle of Final Fantasy looks lame. They should have had some type of special artwork on the system.
I should be playing Mass Effect 2 now but due to hardware failure I’m not. I hope this game comes out on the Ps3. I did pick up Dante’s Inferno instead of Mass Effect 2. I’m looking forward to getting Heavy Rain next and then GOW3.

Personally I believe that when Natal comes out that Sony’s comeback will wither away. 3D doesn’t mean shit when 99% don’t even own a 3D TV and the Arc is basically a Wiimote. Sony’s on a run righ now because it’s finally reached a purchase price that is reasonalble plus plenty are trading in for a slim which some of our resident PS3 Fanboys have done already. Game sales will tell the truth in the coming months because if the game sales don’t change then it will be obvious that the user base remains the same. Truth is it is a great time to own both consoles Sony for your single player exclusives and Bluray and 360 for it’s single player exclusives, Multiplayer games, LIVE and 1080p Movie Streaming. Hopefully game room will be a hit plus whatever services that are comeing this year that Microsoft keeps talking about but won’t say what it is. Funny enough the one console that we should be hateing on is in the lead. Because 360 and PS3 together still out way the Wii and it’s casual offering.

I think films like Avatar have made 3D the next big thing, it will happen, everyone will get a 3D telly and I’m pretty sure you will too. Especially when the new X-Box supports 3D.

I really don’t care if Natal fails or not. I think it is just going to be awesome to navigate the menu with your hand and have the 360 recognize you when you walk in front of it and be able to speak commands. But to Natal’s credit Ricochet is only a demo and I believe that if you go back and watch the E3 Video from last year you will see that the possibilities are great. Microsoft said Natal is for the hardcore first so we will see what natal does in the near future. I believe this years E3 is where it will all be showcased.
I was listening to a video on the 360 today about Fable 3 and it’s already known that Fable will have Natal support. Peter M never said Natal but he said you will have the oppertunity to reach and touch your girlfriend. Now we all know you can have sex in Fable so now just imagine the Possibilities

CAD, tbh I am looking forward to the navigation and control potential as well, which is why I will get one if it is reasonably priced (~$50-$70), but I’ll reserve judgment on it until it comes out. There were plenty of possibilities with Eye also, but, well, we’ll leave it at that. Hopefully this isn’t another repeat performance.
