Square Enix: No Final Fantasy XIII DLC
If you were hoping Final Fantasy XIII would have some cool DLC then you’re to be disappointed. Purists will be happier. Then again, Final Fantasy games always have more than enough longevity to surely eschew the need for any DLC anyway.
I’ve never been too sure about DLC. If it’s done well, being an extension of the original and not something that should have been in there in the first place, then fine. Or if it’s a free addition intended to expand the gameplay then fine. But DLC that is developed alongside the game and which could have been included in the package in the first place. I don’t think so.
Thankfully, Square Enix isn’t taking that route. In fact, there are no plans for DLC of any kind, as the game’s producer, Yoshinori Kitase, told the EU Playstation Blog recently.
Regarding the DLC content, we feel that the final product is 100 percent enjoyable…it’s the complete package. So we’re not planning any DLC at this time. In regard to the rumored cut content, we feel it was taken out of context. There are a lot of ideas that are brought to the table, and then the team takes the best ideas out of those, and the final product is polished that way. There was content that were “ideas†that didn’t make the final content, but the team isn’t looking to release that as downloadable content.
That is, surely, how to make a game. And I wish more developers would take a leaf out of Square Enix’s book. No DLC, no problem.

It’s a shame we get less content on the game, so much was cut out due to the 360.

Square Enix is pissing me off…4 years waiting for this game and we get half of all the content
February 15th, 2010
I’m not ready to back up the 50% content cut claims, but I’m sure they held back quite a bit.
The 360 very well could’ve been the source of the problem (let’s not lie, porting is an inconvenience and DVD’s limited space is a problem in such a huge game), but I’m seeing it as an excuse. Who’s really in charge? Square Enix is, and they’re to blame. Unless Microsoft specifically told them to nerf the PS3 version, of course. I’m still more angry at the developers.
I’ll let this one pass (I wasn’t exactly interested in the first, despising JRPGS, anime, oversized plastic swords, etc).

It’s a shame we only get to play <.0001% of the content now because of the 360's limited disc capacity…

…lol.

Actually, HAWX, Bioshock, Oblivion, Just Cause 2, Batman, Dante’s Inferno and many more…..all have more content on the PS3.

I’m so “arsed out”… I could have watched 13 more hours of 1080p CGI… I’m afraid the existing 10 just won’t be enough…
“of the 38GB of data on the (BD) disc, only 8GB is game data”
in any case, it looks like the game is getting some good reviews and it should be worth playing:

In other news… for those that are interested, IGN’s iPhone app just gained about 10x more appeal imoe now that they decided to update it with top stories and the daily fix videos.

Maybe SE will create FF13-2 with the extra content.
Carlb
Any word on what the 360′s CGI movies are rendered at? If they’re not at least 720p thats a pretty big deal.
February 16th, 2010
Don’t bother Carlb. I found it myself.
“FF13 comes packed with 40-some minutes of pre-rendered CGI sequences that help to further the story, and on the PS3 they run at 1080p and aren’t compressed as highly as on the Xbox 360 version. As well as being heavily compressed, the 360 CGI FMVs run at 720, a lower resolution.
In addition to the CGI sequences, one thing a lot of people don’t realize about FF13 is that many of the ‘in engine’ cutscenes aren’t rendered on the fly – they’re pre-rendered sequences, rendered on a powerful development machine and then placed onto the disc as a video file. That’s one of Square Enix’s tricks for getting their character models and environments to look so much prettier in the cutscenes than in gameplay.
The end result is this: as well as lower-quality CGI sequences, any of the game’s ‘in-engine’ cutscenes that aren’t rendered in real time will suffer from the same compression issues. These sequences are only at 720p on the PS3, but the Xbox 360 compression is significantly more powerful in order to fit the game onto 3 DVDs. The compression used means that any video sequences in the game have a slightly reduced quality.”

So in other words phranctoast: buy the superior in everyway imaginable PS3 version..
February 17th, 2010
CGI, some clothing and slight environment detail turns into “everyway imaginable”… classic… forget about that little detail called gameplay, no no, clothing texture is much more important. It’s not like the differences are as great between the two versions as it was with Bayonetta upon it’s initial release.
February 17th, 2010
Lol……bayonetta was not made by the same developers
February 17th, 2010
IGN done a story about a month ago after playing both versions. Bottom line is they said their is some frame-rate issues with the 360 version. Nothing major though, but still…
And there’s still the fact we lost half the game over some bullshit.
February 17th, 2010
Mike seems to report it’s still a rumor, not a fact OS.
February 17th, 2010
@Carlb
“it’s not like the differences are as great between the two versions as it was with Bayonetta upon it’s initial release.”
I’ve asked twilight to talk about the differences now, which counts in my opinion rather than how it was upon release. We’ll get an non biased opinion on the game.
Speaking of games upon its initial release, which version of Darksiders did you pick up carlb? The 360 version had tearing issues that the patch only alleviated 50% of.
And BTW, anyone with a 1080p HDTV should be able to tell you they can tell the difference between 720p and 1080p. I surely can. Having a 1080i/720p TV before the one I do now, I was even to tell the difference between 1080i and 1080p. You can talk about how it really doesn’t matter, and for most people it probably doesn’t. The fact of the matter is the PS3 version of FF13 is better and its documented as being so. Game over.. Cry about it all you want. Game set match.
February 17th, 2010
Yes, the framerate wasn’t limited to 30fps like the PS3 version, so it had some minor screen tearing that really didn’t affect gameplay. Bayonetta defects on the other hand, did. Glad to see they fixed both.
“for most people it probably doesn’t”
too true.
February 18th, 2010
So you bought the 360 (inferior) version or is that rented too?
February 18th, 2010
you cant even tell the difference between 720p and 1080p (or streamed movies vs BD movies) but some how you notice the difference frame rate….just like in DA:O (25fps vs 30fps) lol
February 19th, 2010
Rented it too back stateside, then sent it back before I left (I only started it). I did buy Mass Effect 2 as a treat to myself for the deployment though. Once I got here in Japan, got an address, internet, TV, etc. I went ahead and looked up GameFly and ordered it again so I could finish it (after Mass Effect 2). Digital Foundry already stated there’s barely any difference between the two versions now that the patch is out, so I don’t get the “(inferior)” part of your comment.
February 22nd, 2010
then you should stfu about Bayonetta because many websites have stated that difference is minimal now that the PS3 patch is out.
I guess your “inferior” rants only works against PS3 games….
February 22nd, 2010
I haven’t mentioned Bayonetta in a few days, and I wasn’t here, but since you brought it up again… the initial version of Darksiders had minimal differences which did not affect reviews like those differences which were found in Bayonetta.
February 23rd, 2010
because since the PS3 is a more powerfull system, where there is a inferior game on it reveiewers are less forgiven….on the other hand an inferior game on the 360 vs a game taking advantage of the PS3 hardware is expected to be inferior.
February 24th, 2010
yes, those slightly higher res cgi cutscenes, woe is me… oh, the “powerfullnes” is overwhelming…
