NPD top 20: MAG and Bayonetta found

NPD top 20: MAG and Bayonetta found The NPD numbers came out recently showing the top ten selling software titles. Many were curious to see how well newly released titles such as MAG and Bayonetta were selling. The top 20 list shows all of the games that were not revealed on the initial NPD report.

Gamasutra recently got a hold of the top 20 selling games list for January showing the titles that almost made it to the top 10. Thanks to the diligent folks over at Gamasutra, the site was able to procure the top 20 list shown below.

Since so many of you are curious about MAG, I’ll start with that title.

Sony already announced that MAG sold over 500k units worldwide within six days. It’s not bad for a game with no single player mode and barely a marketing push by Sony (as usual). There was the one TV advert (It Only Does 256 Players), that barley aired or showed much gameplay footage. This is of course a stark contrast to Mass Effect 2, which had about seven unique ads aired throughout the day and into the night on the SyFy and Spike channel.

The top 20 list shows MAG in 13th place with an unknown quantity sold. Bayonetta was surprisingly near the bottom of the list at number 17 with the PS3 version nowhere in sight. Its interesting to see God of War Collection making it back onto the list in January. This could be due to gamers getting ready for God of War III in March.

    Bayonetta is about as much of a seller as ICO was when it was released (okay maybe a little bit better than that) is it any real surprise that an MMO FPS would outsell it?

    In other news, a PSP title named God Eater was number one in sales worldwide for the week ending on Feb 6, selling nearly 300,000 copies… the Japanese love their Monster Hunter. MAG also beat out the 360 version of MW2, selling 147,000 copies, while Mass Effect 2, a Space RPG of all things, outsold the MMO FPS by 100,000+ with 268,000 copies. Japanese Monster Hunter and Sony’s PSP FTW.

  2. Liquid:

    keep bringin more praise for sony carlB

  3. CON:

    Looks like it’s lucky number 13 for MAG.

    Gotta here Ivan and Roca’s reasons for it crashing.

  4. Roca.:

    @CON

    it Sold more than Bayonetta did (during the entire month) in just 4 days ;)

  5. ncaissie:

    Again with the meaningless US numbers.

  6. phranctoast:

    I expect MAG to have legs and sell for the rest of the PS3′s lifetime.

    I still need to play Bayonetta and Darksiders. I’m halfway through Bioshock 2 right now (Finished Infamous and Dantes Inferno). What a difficult game. The easiest parts seem like the most difficult parts from the first game.

  7. CON:

    @Roca

    Did I spam article after article about Bayonetta???……..No!

    Did you spam article after article about MAG???……..YES!

  8. Roca.:

    @Phranc

    I have been playing the MP mode alot lately. im playing the SP mode on hard and the first big daddy was pretty easy compare to the first big daddy in Bioschock 1…it took me days to kill him after like 20+ tries.

    @CON

    my point was that MAG did not do horrible for the type of game it is….it has sold more than 500K already (in only two weeks), it took LBP alsmot a month to reach that number and Forza 3 sold just about the same amoung of copies (175,000) during the same amount of time (4 days…Did you spam article after article about Forza 3?….YES

  9. Barnabe Jones:

    MAG is already close to 1/2 million which isn’t bad at all. Also WKC had a decent first week in the states beating Star Ocean’s and Tales opening weeks.

    But who care? Why are their still so many Nintendo shovel ware games in the list?

    Mario Kart with wheel? It’s funny that the wheel controls are broken and people still opt to buy it. Can’t have too many plastic peripherals laying around the house.

  10. phranctoast:

    @Roca

    I’m playing it on Normal and finding it difficult. The biggest problem I’m dealing with is running out of ammo. They make you jump through hoops to get adam. If you choose to save the little sisters you need to harvest the adam out of bodies making you a target to dozens of splicers over and over. If you choose to kill the little sisters you have to deal with big sisters and they are tougher then the big daddy you fought to free the little sister. If I had unlimited ammo that would be one thing. Only being able to hold five health packs and five eve syringes with such limited ammo is tiring. I kill all the guys and I’m so depleted they hardly even give me the funds to replenish myself before I bogged down with what seems like non stop enemies. I also don’t like how you can’t go back to previous levels. Enemies respawn making it fruitless to go totally explore a level to find everything as the time spent may inadvertently cause you to spend money on ammo to kill enemies you usually wouldn’t have bothered with if you just left the level early.

    My early review. I like the the first game a hell of a lot more than the second. Its getting to the point where I may not bother to finish the game.

  11. CON:

    @ROCA

    You do realise Bayonetta is a ps3 game also? LOL
    but thanks for highlighting that the 360 version is in the top 20. :)

    Mass Effect 2 sold 2 million in it’s first week sold so looking forward to see how well MAG does against it since Roca is still boasting about it.

  12. Roca.:

    you are really pathetic, im not still boasting about it…..in fact you were the one to broght it up and I just happened to answer just question. I should have ignore you to begin with! keep your MAG campaign though, it only shows how much you care.

    @ Phranc.
    yeah I know what you are saying, it is annoying you dont get as much ammo as before. the little money I can get I always end up wasting on ammo, its really annoying. I have not noticed you cannot go back to previous levels, if thats true then it is really stupid to do that since the first game let you go though every single level so you can find all the tapes, little sister, upgrades, etc.

    I just beat the fist big daddy in El Dorado (playing without vita-chamber). sometimes it can be painful if you forget after playing for a long time. but I really hope I can go back to previous levels to find all the stuff in a single play through

  13. CON:

    You clearly were lol

  14. phranctoast:

    When you exit on the train in the first level it will tell you to make sure you are finished before leaving. I also recall an interview where they said it wasn’t possible. Your insane for playing it without vital chambers. you’ll see soon when you forced to lower the difficulty ;)

  15. phranctoast:

    Bioware is a lot more well known company than Zipper Interactive. I’m sure it wouldn’t have cost EA a fraction of what it cost to buy Bioware to buy Zipper. I’d like to also point out that MAG (while being a MMO FPS) is still a brand new IP and not one that where the first iteration already sold 2million+, which would lead you to believe the sequel should sell that much better as people who only rented the first one due to getting the 360 later than it released may opt to purchase the second one. SO lets look at the pluses and minuses

    Mass Effect 2
    pros:
    -sequel,
    -made by a very renown company
    -advertised up the ass
    -Most highly rated game of 2010
    cons:
    -Space RPG

    MAG
    pros:
    -MMO RPG
    -most innovative MP FPS to ever come out
    -Made by company that made SOCOM
    cons:
    -New IP
    -mixed reviews
    -advertised poorly
    -not for everyone (hardcore of the hardcore)

  16. twilight:

    Phranctoast,
    I played a little bit of Dante’s Inferno. I don’t think it is a bad as some of the critics stated. It’s good to see that you are feeling better.
    Roca,
    I see what you mean. There are so many games that I am having trouble getting to them all. I guess it’s better to have too many games than not enough games.

  17. phranctoast:

    Thanks twilight. Now I just have Bronchitis. I’m on antibiotics, Advair and Mucinex. Nice little cocktail!!!

    Mix that up with a shot of Nyquil and I can get some rest.

    I can honestly say I really enjoyed Dantes Inferno. While it had its share of cheap deaths and some of the bosses where overly difficult prior to using my relics, it was a well designed game with a great feel and awesome combat. I even started playing it immediately after I beat it in resurrection mode (all powers and upgrades from the beginning of game).

    I do have to admit something I not too proud of. I needed to drop the difficulty to easy when fighting Lucifer. His first version wasn’t too bad (him trapped in ice) but once he got free the best I could do was get his health half empty. I tried for a half hour and got fed up and dropped the difficulty. It doesn’t affect trophies or anything like that so that was good.

  18. ViRuS:

    @Phranc,

    What setting did you finish the game on?

    I’ve been trying to beat the game on Infernal from scratch. It’s retardedly difficult.

    I’m at Cereburus and he/she/it isn’t getting any weaker. lol

  19. SW:

    @phranctoast

    Oh c’mon now! Thats the whole point of a game like BioShock! Its an ammo rationing type of a game. Besides, if you run out of bullets, break the drill out on those mofos >:) Drill dash FTW :D

    Before taking adam or a big daddy I always trap out the area and then goto town :D The best time was when I was getting adam from a fallen big daddy right in front a RPG turret I hacked. Poor fools would jump down and get blown up :)

  20. phranctoast:

    @Virus.

    I played on normal and dropped to easy on Lucifer. Nothing I did could drop his health lower than halfway.
    With Cerebus, i dodged the vomit and teased the heads (LOL) until one would bite at me than quickly didge and go to town. when it was recovering id do the R1 and cirlce trick on the things sticking up on the ground. They would flare and then you needed to get thehead to bite at you again. You do that for left and then right one and leave the middle for the end.

    @SW.
    I played the first one as well and I know how it is, I just think they throw way too much at you to expect you to ration off anything. I make sure I hack every single thing also, as I have the tonic that allows eve and health regen upon hacking. The rivet traps don’t seem like they ever are strong enough, and theres just such an over abundance of re spawning enemies making exploration a drag because you hardly make up for the re spawning enemies in your findings. It would be nice if you can pick up your turrets after you drop them to reuse like you can with the unused rivets.

  21. ViRuS:

    @Phranc,

    Thats what I done the first time around. You can kinda get away with it because it doesn’t really damage ya.

    On Infernal though it’s pretty much a OHKO which is pretty annoying. If it hits ya with one of its projectiles you’re pretty much fucked. lol

    I get so far, usually dying with one head to kill.

    Lucifer was probably most annoying when he’s nearly beaten. He kinda goes crazy and throws those fireball things from the air non stop.

    I was surprised I beat him. He was almost as bad as Seth from ST4 on the hardest setting.

    Just when you’ve got him beat, he pulls some off some unavoidable douchebag move. :)

  22. Funkinstien:

    Is anyone following the plot of bioshock 2. Im almost to the end and Im more confused then when I started the game.

    The best ammo conservation method is using wintergrasp 2 then drill dash. Broken enemies still drop loot and it is a one hit kill for weaker enemies.

  23. CON:

    “Bioware is a lot more well known company than Zipper Interactive”

    Seriously is that your arguement? ha!

  24. phranctoast:

    I think everyone would admit that my argument is a lot more sound than your retort to my argument. My “argument” also wasn’t just confined to that first sentence also.

  25. ncaissie:

    Anyone have a tip to get the dam box to the other side of the wall before the spikes pop up in GOW?
    I can only get to the other side but never to the wall in time to jump up. I have tried over 30 times.

  26. Roca.:

    Hold R1 to kick the box….
    do the same to kick it to the other side, then jump on it and quickly do a double jump to the edge of the wall.

  27. ncaissie:

    I tried that.
    The first kick gets my lined up to get it into the other room.
    The second one gets to the other room but not far enough to get to the wall. I have to kick it a third time to get it lined up to kick it to the wall.
    Before that happens the spikes kill me. LOL
    A lot of the time it doesn’t grab the box and jumps when I hit the x to kick.
    Maybe I will have to get my 8 year old daughter to do it for me. LOL she is already ½ way through her game. She is more of a gamer then I am.

  28. ncaissie:

    When I was around her age I spent all my time on my Atari 2600.

  29. phranctoast:

    I think R1 plus square kicks the box.

    You need to pull it far enough away from the wall so you can get behind it..push it a little, than charge a kick. line yourself and charge another kick, line yourself up once more to charge the last kick. By that time to box will be close enough to where it needs to be.

    It’s difficult if you don’t do it right.

  30. Roca.:

    2 kicks then push it for a few seconds.

  31. Roca.:

    is it 3 kicks or 2 kicks?

  32. ncaissie:

    “You need to pull it far enough away from the wall so you can get behind it..push it a little, than charge a kick. line yourself and charge another kick, line yourself up once more to charge the last kick. By that time to box will be close enough to where it needs to be.”

    The second kick never gets far enough. I’ll try pushing it a bit first and see how it goes.

  33. Roca.:

    if you still find yourself having a hard time then just youtube it

  34. phranctoast:

    1st kicks lines it up with the passage. Second kick should force it all the way into the other room. Third kick gets it close enough where you can jump on it and jump up to ledge.

    Maybe Roca is right and you could push it a bit instead of kicking it a last time, but in my experience, I always kicked it three times.

  35. ncaissie:

    ” Second kick should force it all the way into the other room.”
    This kick is my biggest issue. When I try the third kick it hits the wall inside the room and doesn’t get close to the ledge. I’ll keep trying and try pushing it a bit before the second kick.

  36. Roca.:

    try this then;
    kick > push > kick > push > jump > double jump

  37. twilight:

    Phranctoast,
    I play on easy or normal most of the time except for shooters. My skills are unlegendary. I started Dante’s Inferno on normal level. I’ll see how it goes.

  38. Roca.:

    I get to go home early today, snow storm again here in Boston. see tomorrow guys

  39. phranctoast:

    @twilight

    You’ll probably do OK on normal as the games enemies get easier as you get stronger. Remember to apply the relics. That was my biggest mistake. I was also smart about absolving or punishing. I stayed fairly even on both sides to get the best of both worlds.

    Theres Relics spots you want to open up for both, I found the holy path better as I had a relic that constantly regen my mana so all i needed was health and once I got that to level 6 i got the upgrade where all cross kills equal life. I was practically invulnerable when there was enemies around for the killing.

    Amazon has Bayonetta now for $49 which means $39 for me because of the -$10 discount for past purchases. I want the game but I don’t know when I can play it, but I hate passing on a great deal.

  40. ncaissie:

    It only gets cheaper as time goes on Phran.

  41. twilight:

    Phranctoast,
    That’s a good sale for Bayonetta. I really liked the character of Bayonetta as well as the boss battles in the game.

  42. Barnabe Jones:

    This weekend, I told my girlfriend I would cheat on her with Bayonetta… or Sara Palin.

    True story.

  43. twilight:

    BJ,
    Lol. The Bayonetta character does resemble Sara Palin quite a bit. This was the first thing that I noticed when I first saw the character.

  44. Sorral:

    @Phranc

    Geez, is that really how hard BioShock2 on normal? I have a tendency to put any game that I get now on the hardest difficulty available, but this sounds worse than Dead Space on hard/elite, KZ2 on elite and R2 on superhuman. – -;

    Should I feel glad that I disliked BioShock 1 demo long time ago and put the series out of my rader?

    Ncaissie, did you get past that GoW part? I don’t remember that part atm, unless someone can tell me where it is for exact.

  45. Roca.:

    @Sorral

    I also hated the Bioshock 1 demo but the full game ended up being one of my favorites PS3 games.

    btw, nothing comes close to R1 or R2′s superhuman difficulty :(

  46. CarlB:

    ha, try Bayonetta on nonstop climax difficulty if you want to see hard, let alone beating the secret insane boss Father Rodin.

  47. ncaissie:

    I finally got past it. It was to get the red necklace in the upper level of Pandora’s temple.
    Now I’m at the Architects Tomb.
    God I love this game.
    I think these three games make the purchase of the PS3 worth every cent.

  48. Roca.:

    Ninja Gaiden will eat Bayonetta alive anytime.

  49. phranctoast:

    @Sorral,

    I really enjoyed the first one so It’s tough to say. My biggest problem is the respawning enemies. It seems like if you wait long enough, more enemies will eventaully come. This makes searching thouroughly for ammo useless as you end up having to use it up on the “new” guys that just respawned. It’s frustrating.

    Bioshock did this but there was enough ammo, and eve to take care of most guys.

    This time you need to jump through hoops to get eve. I may have to revert back to an old save because I think I lack the money supplies to even continue. I’ve been letting myself get killed so I get more health and eve instead of using what I have.. and thats kind of lame.

  50. phranctoast:

    “God I love this game.
    I think these three games make the purchase of the PS3 worth every cent.”

    A more true statement has yet to appear here on Blorge.

    “Ninja Gaiden will eat Bayonetta alive anytime.”

    I don’t need to even play Bayonetta to agree to that. In Bayonettas defense though, NG’s difficulty was fabricated by poor design in some instances (ie. Having to repeat boss fights after you die and you beat the boss already)

  51. ncaissie:

    LOL I’m hooked on it. It’s like how Ivan feels about the PS3.

  52. ncaissie:

    Even when I’m swearing at the thing! LOL

  53. phranctoast:

    Wait until your on the pillar in Hades. Thats a different type of swearing.

  54. ncaissie:

    LOL
    That’s ok I have a month to finish this one and GOW II.
    It’s snowing here again. Just enough for the wife to shovel though.

  55. ncaissie:

    I only really got stuck twice. There were lots of times I had to do it over and over to get past. But the dogs and the spike floor took the cake.

  56. phranctoast:

    I look at it as its offense to yourself if you don’t play those two games.

  57. ncaissie:

    Yeah, I’m glad they released the collection because it was my #1 reason for BC. I still want BC to play sly cooper again. I fried my PS2 putting a chip in it and replaced it with an xbox instead. I’m also happy I got to play them in HD rather then back on the PS2.

  58. ncaissie:

    It’s also enjoyable playing it on a 100+ inch screen in HD. I should measure the size of my screen.

  59. Roca.:

    the good thing about the series is that
    GoW1 was a awesome game, one of the best game of all time. then GoW2 came out and made GoW1 look like crap.

    expect the same when GoW3 comes out.
    btw, how are you liking GoW PSP?

  60. CarlB:

    “Ninja Gaiden will eat Bayonetta alive anytime.”

    I’ve already beaten NG 1 and 2. Come back and talk once you’ve beaten the secret boss of Bayonetta.

  61. Roca.:

    just because you sucked at Bayonetta doesnt mean it is the hardest game ever…Ninja Gaiden is Known for being extremely difficult. the Fact that you are here bitching about it show how of a troll you are

  62. oldschool1987:

    Any one here beat all the Weapons on FF7. That’s hard.

  63. Roca.:

    I did, not as hard as the two hidden bosses in FF12

    I fought “OMEGA XIII” for 7 days (without powering off my PS2) just to find my self out of potions, magics, items, ethers and out of lived party members lol

    OMG I was so pissed off.

  64. oldschool1987:

    I played through FF12 once and never bothered again which is weird for me because FF is one of my favorite games. I’ve played 7-10 so many times each and done all I can as well. FF12 let me down, the story was too political, the main character shouldn’t have been the main character, it should have been Baltiar , there was no good plot twists, the game was FAR too linear as well and there was no really cool side game like Blitzball or card. FF12 for me was good for a game but for a FF game it let me down.

  65. phranctoast:

    And can they chill with the rabbit women?

  66. CarlB:

    I’m not “bitching” about NG1/2 roca, just saying I’ve beaten them both. Bayonetta’s nonstop climax difficulty and secret boss is just as difficult if not more so. Play Bayonetta before you troll about it roca.

  67. Roca.:

    good luck finding bayonetta in the “hardest game” list.
    you’ll be disappointed

  68. ncaissie:

    I haven’t played GOW PSP in a while. I’m spending my extra time playing on the PS3. I’m too tired to play it on the bus to work.

  69. Barnabe Jones:

    I bet GOW 1 and 2 on the hardest difficulty are pretty damn hard.

    Playing through the games on normal was pretty insane.

  70. Roca.:

    in 2005 first play GoW1 on hard and I got stuck at the 3-headed dog for weeks…then I had to lower the difficulty to beat Ares.

    GOD MODE is almost impossible

  71. ncaissie:

    I’m currently on the level where you jump across bones over the river of blood.

  72. ncaissie:

    I’m going to revisit them on Hard after I finish all three.

  73. Roca.:

    your almost done with the game ncaissie, I will say 20 more mins and then you can finally move on to GOW2

  74. ncaissie:

    Thats good.

  75. Sorral:

    Ah, thanks for the replies about Bioshock 1 and 2. I guess I could give bioshock another try later on if I have time, which is probably never._.

  76. CarlB:

    I know lists are important to you roca, but give it a break.

  77. Roca.:

    stupid getaway comment by carlb….

  78. CarlB:

    To what “hardest game list” are you referring I should have “good luck” finding it on roca? Have you even played the full game and beaten it yet? Do you have all the trophies for it? No, I didn’t think so. Bye, bye.

  79. Roca.:

    trophies don’t mean shit you to me, it only means alot to you because your a trophy/achievement whore who rents all as much game as possible to boost your stupid gamer points

    Bayonetta is nowhere near as hard as DMC3 (original version) where Capcom as forced to make the Special Edition with a easier difficulty level.

    too bad there werent any trophies/achievement back then for you to notice….keep you fanboy whishes up and dream that Bayonetta is the hardest game on earth

  80. CarlB:

    I never stated it was the hardest game on earth roca, just that one level of difficulty and one boss was hard. Again, have you played through the game itself, or are you just talking trash about it?

  81. Roca.:

    w.e Troll

    your out of straws and I dont feel like wasting my time on arguing if Bayonetta is hard or not.

    your the only here that cares about that game (because it score higher on the 360)

  82. CarlB:

    Actually, I think Twilight also enjoyed it thoroughly also. It helps to actually play the game before you criticize or talk about it. I care about the game because it is a great game, and I’m glad that Sony managed to patch it up so PS3 owners can enjoy a similar level of quality as well.

  83. Roca.:

    but twilight is not stuck on it just because it was rated better on the 360….mean while, Bayonetta seems to be ur signature at the end of your post lately

  84. Roca.:

    “I’m glad that Sony managed to patch it up so PS3 owners can enjoy a similar level of quality as well.”

    too bad I can’t say the same about MW2 on the 360..

  85. CarlB:

    Bayonetta is on the topic title here…lol.

    You seem to be stuck on Bayonetta for some reason and keep mentioning it… lately more so than I, not sure why; but I’ve moved on to Mass Effect 2, another great game you should try playing.
