PS3 cross-game chat coming, but only as part of premium PSN subscription service
Sony has improved the features and usability of the PS3 immensely since it was first released via regular firmware updates. But there are some features which are consistently missing, the biggest of which is arguably cross-game voice chat. And there could be a reason for that.
It’s now almost guaranteed that PSN will be gaining a premium subscription service in the near future. It should remain free to play games online, and if it didn’t then there would be uproar, but there will likely be a second-tier service added with extra features for those willing to pay. And it appears cross-game chat is highly likely to be one of those.
According to The Sixth Axis the Official US PlayStation Magazine states:
Aside from the 3D goodness, cross-game party chat is the obvious ‘next big feature,’ even though it might be restricted to paid [PSN] subscribers. Sony’s current service is one of the PS3’s best features, so we’d begrudgingly welcome a revamped PSN with extra subscriber functionality, like cross-game-chat and exclusive PSN downloads.
While that not an official announcement by any means, I’m guessing they know something the rest of us don’t.
I personally feel cross-game voice chat should be a freely available feature and I see no reason why it shouldn’t be. Except for the fact Sony wants as much as possible to entice people to pay money for the premium service. Obviously.

I guess you haven’t been here as long as I have virus. Cross game chat has easily been one of the biggest bones of contention with ps3rd users. They have been banging on about this for years how “the next update” will have it and that it’s “free” and how 360 users are idiots for paying for a service that they get for free.

A while back there was a feature list of items that may or may not be available in the near future. Sony was looking for feedback from PSN users as to gage what they would be willing to pay for and what they wouldn’t so they could establish what appeared to be a tier service of features at different prices.
At no time was it set in stone that cross game chat would be a paid service and it appears to be that sixaxis is speculating and Dave is jumping on it for a story.

Yeah I’m pretty happy that I don’t have to pay an extra fee to play my games online.
Being able to chat with people from the XMB would be neat I guess, but at the same time, I couldn’t care less about not being able to.

exactly what I have been trying to explain…but must 360 owners here are stuck on thinking Sony is actually going to charge for Online play or for X-game chat when none of it is even official and came out from a survey.
but like I said…i’m looking for the whole package, if it interest me then I might just pay for w.e they are offering. but then again I could chose not to pay and still be able to have fun online and do everything I have been doing since I got my PS3 for free.

While some of those things interest me, What I really want doesn’t appear to be on there.
I want a subscription movie service similar to Netflix but using the PSN movies service instead.
I’d pay $10-15/month for unlimited rental downloads of the movies they have there. They have newer stuff than Netflix so its win-win in that respect.
A rental service for All games would also be cool. Imagine, just downloading a game you weren’t sure about for $5 and it stops working after three days.
Maybe a monthly subscription for that similar to gamefly where your allowed to have only so many games donloaded/rented out at one time for a monthly fee.
These are features that would interest me, but I’m not holding my breath for Sony to utilize that.
I have a feeling I’m just going to be disappointed.

this might just happened through a different service called “Qriocity” , since Sony wants the service to cover PC, HDTVs, PS3 and other divices….so making a premuin pakage for it with alot of PS3 features doesnt make sense

Virus, I don’t want pull out the whole ” I’ve been here a long time card”, but, contrary to what you may believe, I’m not new around here, in fact, when I stubled upon gamerblorge, it was because of CAD/CON/HAPPYHOKUM that I even started posting.
Many an article would these guys try and piss on any news that was even remotely positive for the ps3, so forgive me if I go ahead and mudsling them any chance I get. Plus its fun.
In all honesty I have always claimed to be a fanboy, just not a blind one like the above mentioned trio. Mind you I was among the MINORITY of sony fanboys on here at the time, a time where anything pro ps3, the trio would quickly try to stomp on…

Cross game voice chat is a big deal for PS3. Especially when devs like gearbox outsource to shitty servers like gamespy and ruin regular voice chat. That said its a desired addon, But playing online is even more desired is my understanding. So current PSN is better than silver but not better than current gold. If Premium service meets or exceeds gold than PSN will have the upper hand. If premium falls short of gold than Live will still retain the upper hand. Anyone have a problem with this arguement.
