Square’s Kitase: Final Fantasy VII remake unlikely as it would take too long

February 20, 2010

Gamers are obviously a sentimental lot. That’s the only way to explain the demand there is for a remake of Final Fantasy VII, a game that millions of us played and loved to bits. But an FF7 remake looks unlikely to ever happen, mainly because it would take up so much time and resources which Square Enix would rather channel into a new title.

At least that’s the view of Yoshinori Kitase, the producer of the latest game in the series, Final Fantasy XIII, which is due out next month. When asked if he saw a Final Fantasy 7 remake happening, he told TechDigest:

If it were possible that we had all the right facilities and the right environment to be able to make and prepare a Final Fantasy VII remake within a year, we’d very much like a go at it! But even Final Fantasy XIII has taken over three and a half years to create. If we were to recreate final Fantasy VII with the same level of graphical detail as you see in Final Fantasy XIII, we’d imagine that that would take as much as three or four times longer than the three and a half years it has taken to put this Final Fantasy together! So it’s looking pretty unrealistic! But if any such situation came about by any remote chance, then yes, we’d do it!

That’s a no then.

This flies in the face of what Tetsuya Nomura said in December, when he heavily hinted at an announcement being made in 2010. Although he never actually mentioned the title of the game in question.

I can see why Square would be against it, but there’s no possible way a Final Fantasy VII remake wouldn’t sell by the bucketful, which would surely make the time and money spent on its production warranted. Or am I talking nonsense?

    This info is BS. considering the fact that they already created alot of resources and character models for FFVIII when they created that PS3 tech demo years ago. It obviously wouldn’t take as long as Kitase stated.

    I wish they would just do it already. It’s been 2 console generations since FFVII came out and an update would be awsome. Plus it only makes sense because they revisisted every numbered FF game before 7 so far, so it’s time for 7

    I think it makes no sense. I’m not a Final Fantasy person so I have no idea what any of them are like but usually as time goes on what you thought was amazing 10 years ago will pale in comparison to what is out now. I don’t know if this holds true with Final Fantasy but I feel that who ever the audience was has probably grown up and moved on.

    I’ve been a fan of RPGs for years, since I played Dragon Warrior (American renamed Dragon Quest) and Final Fantasy on NES.

    For me, 7 is the best of the FF games. Of course alot of other people feel this way about it too. Some people refer to FFVII as the game that sold the PS1. I can say that personally I can agree with this statement. When FFVII I begged my mom to buy me a PS1 and this game, and she did.

    Something else that I think is worth mentioning is that someone actually made a 2D port of the game lol

    I forgot to mention that I have not moved on lol. FFVII is still my fav RPG after all these years. Even the newer FF games from Square lack alot of what 7 has.

    I’ve beaten FFVII at least 10 times. My fastest time is 24:14. I want to play through again but my Disc 1 is messed up, so I might have to find a place to get the scratches removed or buy it from PSN for $10. I actually want my girlfriend to see this game for herself so I want to play through with her.

    they should leave ff7 in the past. . what if it didnt hav the same feel as i did back den? a remake in my oppinion would ruin it

  6. millerman753:

    a remake would just give it the graphic quality of todays games and systems. and yes ff7 is by far the best ff game ever made. i still play it on my ps3. the graphics suck now since we have grown in that aspect of gaming. but still awesome gameplay and storyline. and it shouldnt take that much time at all. game plot, story line and chars, boss’s are already done. just have to put it into a computer and make it prettier. it will def. sell more then enough to make a profit. and in no time at all. just give me word and ill pre order mine once allowed to.

    If your going to remake older FF games, make sure they have the same appeal, which almost certainly it won’t.

    off topic:
    old ff games > new ff games

    Seriously, the new graphics just aren’t as appealing as the old school ones.

    *after first sentence*

    So I’m glad they wont be remaking it.

  9. Roca.:

    after FF7 my favorite RPG is FF12.

    I still dont like that they took out they ability to fly around in airships after FF9

    I am glad they are not doing this. Nostalgia is great and all, but remaking old games is risky. I say let leegendary games stay legendary.

  11. CarlB:

    If they treat this the way they did God of War Collection, it will be a homerun.

    @Roca

    FF7 is my fav, then after that it’s 10 with 12 and 9 (tied) following VERY closely behind.

    Thinking of the “7 Saga”

    Dirge of Cerberus and Crisis Core were just ok… Advent children was awsome but kinda out of whack.

    There is also an animation, FFVII Last Order, that came out in japan but has not been translated to english officially yet.

    Ever notice how no other FF got this treatment? I mean X got X-2 (which was ok, but playing dressed up turned alot of people off)and 4 recently got a follow up on Wii.

    FF7 got that treatment because its the most popular FF game and people want more of it. This is why it’s possible that it will be remade.

    @FahKin
    I loved Crisis Core (Story > gameplay), I wish they do a game just like that based on Sephiroth’s story or Vicent (my favorite FF7 character)

    but yeah, it seems you and I have similar tastes.
    I wanted to like FF8 but the draw system pissed me off…it looked like no matter how hard you level up, enemies also seems to level up accordingly.

    and the world map soundtrack was pretty boring too…
    FF7 is hands down the best RPG I have ever play and it has the best equipment system of any RPG game (Materia System + Weapon with slots) along with a great cast of characters and memorable towns and city.

    FF12 was just epic with a great new gameplay mechanics….I enjoyed FF12 alot because the gambit system was more like the strategy part of the game…if you were good at it, it will pay off during battles. the characters Vann and his sister should have never been made but Balthier and Bash made up for it.

    FF9 was more of a classic FF game but really well done. I liked it more than FF8 and FF10

    @Roca

    I too loved Crisis Core more for its story than for its gameplay. I played both Dirge of Cerberus and Crisis Core because of the FFVII storyline.

    What did you think of Dirge of Cerberus? I thought it wasn’t as bad as alot of people said it was. I did enjoy it. Vincent is a fav character of mine too and I had really wanted to know his back story.

    FF8… well I did like it BUT the draw system did piss me off too lol. What a waste of time. Even though you could level up your major stat boosts had to come from Junctioning the spells to stats to get anywhere… I only played through 8 once cause other FF games are much better. I did like a few things about the game though.

    The SeeD tests were kinda interesting. Being able to test up to a higher rank that determines how much Gil you get paid, plus not being able to obtain gil through battle was an interesting deviation from the norm.

    Probably the most memorable part of FF8 to me was the train mission.

    Also I kinda thought the gunblade was neat.

    Balamb Garden is probably one of the biggest vehicles in any FF game… The characters weren’t exacly so memorable though.

    FF7 is my fav RPG. My second fav RPG also was on PS1, and that is Breath of Fire 3.

    FF9 is just awsome… Aldelbrecht Steiner is my fav character, then Vivi. Even Zidane was cool. The characters were just alot more memorable than 8 by far. Not to mention the game was full of awsome moments.

    I agree that FF12 was epic. Alot of people didn’t like it because of the gambit system but I also felt that it added alot of strategy to it. I think alot of people just didn’t understand the gambit system so well, or just didn’t put the effort into it simply because it wasn’t traditional.

    I also thought the environments were simply incredible and I had really enjoyed playing through and exploring every new area I entered.

    What I didn’t like about 12 was that things were actually removed from the game and you could actually miss several things all too easily if you didnt have knowledge of what you could miss.

    If you ever played the FF12 demo that was included with Dragon Quest 8, you will notice that the second part you can play is missing from the actual game and the first part was changed. On top of that I had read an article online somewhere that talked about Square cutting some things out of the final game. Well… as it stands that wasn’t too bad anyway cause it was a pretty big game as it was.
