Uncharted 2 surpass 3.5 million with 150 industry awards
Uncharted 2 is the definitive Game of the Year title for 2009 with more industry awards than you can shake a stick at it. Sony recently announced a major milestone for the title in sales and awards.
There is no arguing it; Uncharted 2 is the Game of the Year for 2009 far overshadowing any of its competitors for receiving the prestigious award across the majority of the media outlets. The game also takes the cake for being one of the few titles to receive 150 industry awards.
Late last week, Uncharted 2 received 10 awards from the Interactive Achievement Awards ceremony stealing the show. As Joystiq puts it, “DICE 2010: Uncharted 2 wins like everything at Interactive Achievement Awards.â€
Joystiq: Congratulations to all the winners. Oh, and let’s just give Naughty Dog all its awards at once from now on; it’s tough to make award-winning games without any cartilage in your knees.
Sony also announced that Uncharted 2 sales have surpassed 3.5 million units and counting. The company also boasts that the game is one of the fastest selling first party PS3 titles.
Sales for Uncharted 2 are pretty good and I’m sure it surpasses Naughty Dog’s expectations, but for the amount of recognition it still seems a bit low. For a game critically acclaimed much more than Halo 3 or Modern Warfare 2, I would expect the sales to reflect it as such.
However, I suppose that’s like asking why Harry Potter or Twilight is such a smash box office success (not comparing Harry Potter to MW2 mind you). If you haven’t clued in on my analogy, the unifying factor here of course is mass appeal.

Naughty dog is the only game maker out there that can make you happy by playing Uncharted 2 or by the mere mention of their name.
I knew the quality of the game will sell U2 and spread out its long legs slowly but surely.
No hype, no waggling, no overspending, no timed exclusivity, no gimicks, and no mass appeal.
For an “unpopular” new IP, ND & Uncharted 2 tells the world “quality means quantity” can be done even if its not a perfect world.
Mike, Mike Patcher also worried about Uncharted 2 sales last year, so don’t. I never doubted Uncharted 2′s quality and success when I played it. I am still part of those 1.5 million addicted gamers hooked on-line still playing this great game.

Congratulations to everyone who worked on Uncharted 2 for winning game of the year. It is a well deserved honor. Let’s see if another Ps3 game can repeat as game of the year or if a Xbox360 title can sneak in and spoil the party. Either way, all gamers are in for a treat this year.

On a side note, I said I would never buy another Xbox360 again. However, I have a Xbox360 friend that had other ideas. He came over and hooked up a Xbox360 to my t.v. He told me he was coming over so that I could play Mass Effect 2. I asked him where was Mass Effect 2? I thought he just forgot to bring the game. He tells me that I will need to go and get my own copy of Mass Effect 2. He tells me that the Xbox360 is mine to keep. He said he had purchased a new one for me. He said that he was tired of me bashing the Xbox360 game system. He said that I had just managed to get one of the very few defective models off the assembly line. He said the only way to prove it was by buying me a new Xbox360 since I was being hard headed by refusing to buy another one. I was speechless.

Uncharted 2 was exactly the game that Sony needed. Where would Sony be right now without Drake? The same place Microsoft would be without Gears. Devoid of a definitive new IP. And that’s something that every game console needs, every generation… you can’t run on a few old series alone, unless your name is Nintendo. And in that case, I can’t talk to you -_-
Sure, it might be a TAAAD bit overrated. But it’s the best game of 2009 by far (unless you REALLY loved AC2), and a pretty nice leap for gaming in the storytelling, characters, graphics, and music compartments.

Uncharted 2 is “overrated”?… wait a sec…
But really, I think Uncharted 2 would be closer to Avatar (movie) in comparison (quality, graphics, reviews) than the movies mentioned. The thing is the cinema still has a larger draw (for truly blockbuster titles), and Avatar had hardly any competition on it’s level. Uncharted 2 had plenty, and it was only available for one console.

UC2 was an excellent game. The odd plot hole exists, i.e at the end you’re running through snow, then you hit Shambala and it’s all green, but when there’s so much happening on the screen then it’s forgivable.
This is an example of what happens when a defining franchise drops the ball (Tomb Raider, i’m looking at you), a new one comes in with the same basic idea and makes it a million times better.

Cool… Hey Mike, honest question, where did you get that info? I tried looking for a list, article, or something, but the closest I came was stuff referencing this article… and an article about GDC 2010 having “150 notable game industry figures judging the IGF Main Competition” on the GDC news page where Uncharted 2 was mentioned as well.

High scores don’t always translate to most amount of awards…..GTA4 comes to mind.
150 awards or not…. Uncharted 2 set records for most awards won at E3 (ME2 was also there) and at DICE.

I already predicted God of War III would win GotY 2010, but it hasn’t come out yet or been reviewed, ME2 has.
Also Mass Effect 2 (96) has the same Metacritic rating as Uncharted 2 (96), you should check your facts before such claims. It has 96 reviews whereas UC2 has 104, so the difference is nominal considering the time each has been on the market.

User review scores mean shit it my eyes. Theres no control and nothing is stopping people from outright bashing games with terrible review scores even if they never played the game.
Are the 39 and 29 review scores from reputable sources or are they also user based?

If the Tomb Raider series dropped the ball in any respect I think its in the story. They really let me down with the last one tying everything up. Game play wise though they are almost different genres and I like the way the TR series is how it is (platforming and adventure vs duck and cover shooter with minimal puzzles and platforming.)
anyway…Great news that U2 is selling better than most PS3 games. If it sold on par to its quality though it should be in the 10 million range.

I guess it really doesn’t sound like much of an argument. He can show the fraction of the time that ME2 has been out but to what avail? Who’s reviewing the game now who hasn’t already? On top of that, if it does get reviewed more times it still needs an additional 10 perfect review scores to match U2 in that. Argument over as far as I’m concerned
I wonder if coming out in the beginning of the year will hurt ME2 chances for GOTY awards? Gamespot at least gave the nod to Killzone 2 over MW2 and I was very surprised by this due to the February release of KZ2.
Of course, its a bit premature talking GOTY when theres so many great games on the horizon that can easily come in a snatch them away. A 96% metacritic is an awesome feat and will be tough for any game coming out to top it in that respect.

I think I expect Fallout: New Vegas to win GOTY this year since Oblivion and Fallout 3 has both won GOTY (2006 & 2008) because the western market are obsess with open-world type of games. oh, btw…Oblion and Fallout 3 are pretty similar so Fallout Vegas should stick to the same formula

Good point Roca. Its surprising that they can get out another Fallout game this quickly. The series may lose its a luster though being that its another Fallout game. They better go in a fix all of the problems with Fallout 3, like ND did with Uncharted to Uncharted 2 and Bioware did with ME to ME2.

: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor as it was in Uncharted 2.
I personally believe that was part of the draw to it. A Paradise right in the middle of the one of the harshest climates in the World.

Right again SW, it was a console to PC port, and the initial version (review version) on PC had several bugs/glitches that patch 1.01 seems to have fixed.

Also, Metacritic weighs each site differently based upon it’s credibility, so IGN’s, or even Playstation Official Magazine would have more weight than “PS3Bloggen.se” (also gave 100 to UC2). Part of the purpose of aggregate reviews is to average not only several review scores, but also several sources credibility or weight.

Can’t argue with Scale. RPG’s typically are bigger.
Its won awards for the story and voice acting though
Not to take a dig at ME2, but I don’t see how U2 doesn’t have longevity. It has a MP aspect where ME2 lacks that entirely.
Action appears to be preference on your part, but OK….an RPG has better action than an action game…..

good point Phranc, it also have DLC and online co-op which plays totaly different than the SP mode.

it also just won the “Writers Guild of America” award for “Best Video Game Writing”……it is also been nomiated in 8 categories for Baftas awards, a ceremony that will be held in London on March 19.
