David Jaffe does still care about reviews after all, lucky God Of War III is killer then

February 27, 2010

Twisted Metal and God Of War creator David Jaffe still cares about reviews. And that’s straight from the mouth of the game developer himself. So I guess it’s a good thing that God Of War is garnering great reviews from all quarters.

CVG yesterday published a post titled ‘David Jaffe: I don’t care about reviews’ with the following quote to back that headline up:

Don’t get me wrong – a good review makes my night, but I no longer find myself connecting with what a lot of reviewers go for and so it doesn’t matter as much to me any more.

Unfortunately, Jaffe took exception to his words being changed to that particular headline, and proceeded to have a pop about it on his blog. So CVG changed the headline ‘David Jaffe: I don’t care about reviews like I used to’, which doesn’t really have the same demanding-to-be-read quality about it. I actually think CVG were fine with their original headline, it was hardly misrepresentation.

Anyway, Jaffe quantified his comments by stating:

I DO care about getting good reviews BUT I’m not as vested in proper media reviews as I used to be because I don’t feel I connect as much as I used to to what mainstream game critics like/want/desire.

In other words, Jaffe cares what the fans think rather than the hardened critics and reviewers that play games every day of the week as a job rather than a hobby. Fair enough.

It’s all about the gamers. I’m sure most gamers will be very pleased with the new G0W3 game. GOW3 is one of the many reasons to own a Ps3.

  2. Kevo/Sir_Chubs_Alot08:

    he’s on ps3′s “the tester”

  3. Kevo/Sir_Chubs_Alot08:

he’s sounds like a cool dude to chill and have a beer with lol

  4. phranctoast:

I’ve literally said the same thing kevo.

Check out his kotaku interview from last week. They all but confirm a new twisted metal. They were talking about a character in the game that’s red with black trim. Trim? It has to be another tm game right?

  5. Sorral:

So phranc, I think you screwed up.

  6. Sorral:

You haven’t played ZOE2 yet! (David jaffe’s first line in the other post about goof screwing up <.<)

  7. Roca.:

“Check out his kotaku interview from last week”

    do you have the url?

  8. phranctoast:

I’m sorry sorral. Don’t know what you are talon about.

Roca, it’s kotaku’s last podcast. You can even Download it on an iPhone from a wireless network.

  9. phranctoast:

    talon =*talking*

He’s even part of the 1up 4 guys panel that they did for GDC. He talks more about his next game. Still can’t tell if its a Twisted Metal game. It kind of sounds like a new IP.

  10. Roca.:

“it kind of sounds like a new IP”

Maybe is a twisted new IP…who knows

After listening to the whole 1up interview he confirmed it’s a game with cars. He was talking about how difficult it is to keep a controller setting that people are used to when those same buttons are used for other things.

He was mentioning the R2 and L2 for brake and gas to keep with the general default buttons that has occurred in with recent games, but said it could pose a problem when other things also apply to those (weapons).

Its looking to me like a reinvention of the Twisted Metal Franchise.

I just hope they keep the D-pad movement config intact as I hate using analog in TM games. You also need the D pad for the combos as left right left right down up is tougher to do on analog

  12. Sorral:

    ZOE2 = Zone Of the Enders 2.

  13. Roca.:

w.e David Jaffe’s game is, it is probably a high profile games since Sony has not let him go into details about the game and he has said many times that his game will be announcedd whenever he gets the green light from Sony

  14. phranctoast:

I know what ZOE2 is, I don’t understand how any of what you are saying applies to me.

  15. phranctoast:

    I screwed up how?

  16. Roca.:

    “I think you screwed up”

that’s David Jaffe famous line in “The Tester”

  17. phranctoast:

    ahhhh. Haven’t watched that yet.

  18. Roca.:

did you get the error Phranc?
dont turn your system on until it is fixed…

  19. phranctoast:

I played A2 yesterday, with no error. My girl did her exercise video this morning and that doesn’t touch the network other than the initial sign on. I’ll leave it off today and check it out tomorrow.

  20. Sorral:

Roca got it right. It is David’s line in the tester. So, now I think that you screwed up twice!

My ps3 is the phat MGS4 bundle with BC, and it got the current errors. Phat PS3s without BC weren’t getting the issues along with the slims, at least from what I heard unless someone can say otherwise.

I think this guy is giving us warnings about biased journalism & websites paid big bucks to sway unassuming gamers who are researching for good games to buy. For seasoned gamers who can read between the lines no prob but for the casual or newbie gamer, good luck!

The good thing about PS3 exclusives is that their quality sell themselves. Sony only has to give them decent promotion (by which Sony is being highly criticized even by PS3 owners themselves) and not splurge money to do PR barrages.
Soon, PS3 exclusives will have a reputation of high quality like Nintendo’s formula of high quality exclusive games that tend to have long legs (i.e. Uncharted 2)and translates to word-of-mouth.
Sony has put its money on making its own franchises and not heavy adverstising. So far PS3 is on a winning streak with its exclusives-critically & commercially. Under the extreme pressure given by its rivals, it’s good to see PS3 not give in and fight fire with fire but focus on what it needs to do for the industry-make good games that sell themselves & the PS3.

  22. phranctoast:

I’ve yet to watch the tester. Is it any good?

I’m definitely a big Jaffe fan. I actually enjoy his interviews (language tolerated)because he more than any other developer sounds like he really enjoys what he’s doing and has a lot to say about the industry as a whole. He’s also incredibly humble and plays all consoles.

Like kevo said. I’d like to go out to a bar and have some beers and talk games with him.

  23. ncaissie:

    very short. but ok.
If you like that kind of thing.

  24. ncaissie:

    That was @the tester question.

  25. Sorral:

    @Bj
I’m not into the reality shows scene, but as ncaissie said, it is short, so it wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be from the trailers.

Also, David Jaffe is in the second episode, so at least watch that and you will see where I was getting his quotes from.
