Xbox 360 version of Final Fantasy XIII disappointing and sub-par
The launch of Final Fantasy XIII is merely days away and many gamers will have to decide which platform to purchase it on. Luckily Digital Foundry gives their take between the Xbox 360 and PS3 version of the game and provides their recommendation.
The folks over at Digital Foundry did a comparison piece between the Xbox 360 and PS3 version of Final Fantasy XIII. As reported throughout the industry, DF confirmed that the Xbox 360 version of FFXIII is sub-HD running at 1024×576, compared to the PS3’s hi-definition 720p.
"Adequate but a touch disappointing" best sums up the Xbox 360 version. Fine edges lose precision, and while the effect is mitigated thanks to the MSAA along with the multitude of post processing effects the engine has at its disposal, the fact is that the lack of resolution can make the 360 build look sub-par.
Aside from the niggling issues on the Xbox 360 version such as color saturation issues, and blurry textures, the most disappointing issue is with the cut-scene quality. While, the PS3 version’s cut-scenes appear to be superior to in-game engine quality, at times the Xbox 360 cut-scenes appear to be worse off than the in-game graphics.
Digital Foundry ends their analysis with a strong conclusion indicating that the PS3 is the definite platform of choice for Final Fantasy XIII.
DF writes:
So, occasionally fine, sometimes grim: a statement that effectively sums up how much of Final Fantasy XIII looks on Xbox 360 when compared to the PlayStation 3 game, meaning that if you own both consoles, there really is only one choice when it comes to the purchasing decision.
However, if you only own an Xbox 360, FFXIII is still a worthwhile experience as the story, gameplay and functionality is all there.
Final Fantasy XIII is set to drop on March 9 worldwide on the Xbox 360 and PS3.

Fighting games just suck on 360, but its because of the the D-pad. You can’t do jack with the messed up 360 D-pad, which not capable of the tight control required by the best of fighting games. IE Tekken Street fighter, and Soul Caliber.

I had posted a link the other day that was for a comparision video for the 2 versions of FFXIII. Mike probably should have posted that here in the story so that we can see for ourselves. I went to look for it and I couldn’t find it… maybe it dissapeared..

This gives a pretty good comparisson between the 360 and PS3 versions.
You can noticed some differences throughout the video but overall the difference doesn’t seem to be as bad as some people are making it up to be.
Honestly seems like some really negative feedback here regarding the 360 versions.
In the end the bottom line is this…
FFXIII is going to be an awsome game that will only benefit from being a multi platform game. This will give a much larger audience a chance to play this incredible game.

I really don’t think anyone should be whining. The odds of it turning up on the 360 in the first place were slim enough.
I just hope that the gameplay is the meat of the game. For an RPG, I think of graphics as fries… which I often order without.

Last time I heard something like that a Sony exec was offering $1200 if you could find a PS3… that was almost three and a half years ago, and they are still millions of units behind 360 in worldwide sales and selling at a loss, even after taking out full PS2 BC, touch controls, extra ports, etc. 360 is already outselling Sony software worldwide this year by a million plus, and 113M plus overall.

I sort of noticed something a little… hinky. (Shame if you never played Uncharted 1 to recognize that quote). I went on the wikipedia page for GOW3, and checked out the “reception” section. In the side, I see “IGN: 10/10″, so I’m like “whoa, back up the road!” and google it. Actually turns out it was a fake screenshot, like the one just before MW2. A few hours later, no longer on the Wikipedia page. While it’s surely fake, that would be pretty awesome if IGN gave it 10/10. I found the demo pretty fantastic, anyways.

The Ps3 system did outsell the Xbox360 system in 2009. The Ps3 has sold more than Xbox 360 in its lifetime so far. Microsoft’s profit is not as big as it should be. After all, Microsoft has spent over a billion dollars and still counting repairing defective Xbox360′s.

The Xbox360 is an okay gaming system but the quality of titles that the Ps3 system has been putting out is just amazing. Uncharted 2, Heavy Rain, and soon to come God of War 3. Heavy Rain is awesome. I’ve never played a game as innovative as this. The limitations of the Xbox360′s hardware is really starting to show. Some of you claim that Xbox360 can do equal graphics. The truth is that the Xbox360 can not handle Ps3 games like this.

I thought Microsoft was just trying to get their foot in the door as a console maker first, then move on to publishing success later? Nice that they are off to such a great start against the once undisputed leader, but I don’t foresee them buying out existing studios left and right as Sony is continuing to do, which would largely explain their publishing “success”.
I never said Sony “will” just that they might. Not to mean that they would stop making TV’s and BD players, just that they seem to be having much more success with publishing games right now, as you mentioned, and that the universal console is still a possibility, in which case they would be well covered.

Why is so much attention being paid to a game that is currently sitting on an 83 metarating on both consoles?
I recall a game that was released a few months back which had one console version being better than another by quite a margin, and it had a metarating of 90 and 86 respectively. Why did this game not get as much coverage as FFXIII? Strange.
Anyway, I won’t be picking this game up on either console unless I find it for a steal.

Would have to disagree with a lot of your post. Heavy Rain is good, however I am having trouble staying awake on my second playthrough. Am regretting plonking down the cash for it, I should have rented it for a few days instead because replayability is not that good.
Uncharted 2 was great fun, God Of War 3 looks like a lot of fun too. I don’t believe you have played Mass Effect 2 yet. It has to be one of the best games I have played, ever. You are also discounting 360 games in the pipeline such as Alan Wake, Splinter Cell, Reach and Crackdown 2, all which look like a lot of fun too.
Heavy Rain’s graphics are good, but not the best graphics I’ve seen, by a long shot. Watching 2 people kissing is hilarious. And i’ve had people walking through desks and all sorts of strange stuff. And the less said about the controls the better. I couldn’t agree more with Adam Sessler’s comment on XPlay where he said something like ‘My character just kicked someone’s arse, and now he can’t walk through a door or turn a corner properly’.
In my opinion, the graphics on Heavy Rain could easily be done on the 360. Regarding the truth that you claim, I wouldn’t mind seeing where you sourced it from.

Yeah I read DF`s article and I did even bother read Blorgs. Sure the PS3 version looks only slightly better but this is not Bayonetta disaster. Most people in the comments couldn`t even see what the big difference is. In fact the 360 has a Better Frame rate. it`s still going to sell more on the 360 at the end of the day.

If you own just the Xbox 360 and you like RPG you getting FFXIII for Xbox 360 obvious the same goes for PS3 owners. But if you own both consoles they the obvious choice will obviously be the PS3 because it was made for it from scratch. The reason the PS3 version is going to outsell the Xbox version is because the PS3 has the better version and it has a lot lot more fans. I won’t be buying that soon. Maybe i can download.
I love 1080p cutscenes like the want FFXIII has. 720p is not bad either for cutscene but 576p native is really low compare to even 720p. Square-Enix rushed the shit outer the Xbox version sloppy developer now how sad.

Of course Halo outsold MGS4, sadly this generation it has become somewhat legendary, but MGS4 is the better game if you take a look at metacritic, it does better than ODST and GOW 2. Admittedly GOW1 had the same score, but not as many 100s. Sales do not equal the quality of the game. Would you say MW2 was the best game of all time? No, only a retard would.

PS3 sales are spread out on multiple games.
for example…during the timeframe between ODST and MW2 PS3 put out a whole bunch of titles covering many different genres, all these titles came out in between are sales probably spread out among them:
Demon’s Souls
Uncharted 2
Ratchet & Clank: ACIT
Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2
GoW Collection
sales doesn’t mean anything when the PS3 has been putting out the best “quality” lineup since 2008.
and for the Graphics argument….I always keep hearing “it can be done on the 360″ but in reality the 360 best looking game is Gears of War 2 and PS3 has many titles offering way better graphics. So the question is, if “it can be done on the 360″ and the 360 is easier to develop and has been out longer, then why we havent seen anything close to PS3 graphics on the 360?
Heavy Rain graphics are way out of this league, granted, there are some low res scene in the game but for the most part the game look beautiful

I agree 100%. I think that the PS3 has a much wider appeal in games, and relies more on quality than mass-marketing games that really aren’t that special. Of course, the 360 is worth owning, since it has great online and quite a few good games.

Harry definitely owns a ps3. I see him online all the time, so we can stop that bullshit. I don’t know what the issue is, Harry puts favourable and negative comments for BOTH systems here ALL THE TIME !!!!! Yes, he favours the 360, but that hardly makes him a fanboy. Just the same as I favour the ps3 (but still really enjoy the 360, especially the controller – not the d-pad though)

I know that you prefer the Xbox360 system. However, I disagree with you about Xbox360′s graphics. Xbox360 can not produce the same graphics that the Ps3 system can. Up until this point, there has not been a Xbox360 game that has come out with better graphics then the Ps3 system. I agree with Ncaissie. If the Xbox360 can produce these type of graphics, then why has it not been done yet?
As far Heavy Rain goes, everyone has different tastes. The graphics are good on this game but I was talking more about the innovation of this game. It is top notch.
I did see a little of Mass Effect 2. The graphics are only slightly better than the original Mass Effect game. I am not interested in Crackdown 2. I disliked the first game. Splinter Cell, Halo Reach, and possibly Alan Wake would be the only Xbox360 games coming out that I would be interested in.

Isn’t it amazing how many 360 titles they have to take away to get the PS3 on a level playing field in sales? Multiplatform suddenly doesn’t count in sales discussions either lol. Then they want to argue games while forgetting to mention the fact that Forza 2&3, Halo 3, and Gears of War 1&2 are all universally acclaimed, and forget to mention entirely Fable II or Mass Effect II. Then they will narrow it down even further by saying “TRUE EXCLUSIVES” as if the fact that it’s on PC as well eliminates the fact that it is not available for PS3.
Of course, they also fail to mention that Resistance or KZ2 as shooters could have been as successful as Gears or Halo 3, but then if they mentioned it they would also have to mention that both were rated lower in aggregate reviews as well… that just wouldn’t do.
Best also not to mention the fact that 360 has more universally acclaimed titles this year as well as overall that span just as many genres, if not more so than PS3. Wait and see, they will respond to this by putting out even more restrictions to somehow downplay the facts. I can hear them now… “But, that was patched and is better now!”, “But, I could play them if I had a gaming PC”, “But, those are older games!” or some such similar nonsense followed up by stupid insults that match their low intelligence levels… lol.

Aggregate scores mean nothing unless you actually read the reviews. If you actually looked at where the reviews came from you would realize that many of the sites use a out 5 system. A 4 out of 5 game could be 80% all the way to 99%. Also how many exclusives does each console really have. PS3 has MGS4, Gran Turismo, Ratchet and Clank, heavy rain, killzone, resistance, LBP, GOW, uncharted, motorstorm, and some other smaller ones. The 360 has halo, gears, forza, and fable are the only games that are truly exclusive excluding gears 1 that is on the PC. All other exclusive games are available on the pc which are LFD and Mass effect. I only count series because is is unfair or count sequels as exclusives as a game could spawn many sequels very quickly such as ratchet and clank on the PS2. That being said the PS3 comes to a total of 10+ games. The 360 comes to a total of 6+. The PS3 exclusives cover a much wider base than the 360 exclusives which consist of mostly shooters with the exception of fable, forza, and possibly mass effect of you take its rpg elements into consideration. Basically the xbox exclusives consist of three genres while the ps3 contains at least 5 distinct genres. Granted I am probably forgetting some games, but the list above consists of basically the biggest exclusives for each platform.

So far this year the 360 has had two games that are universally acclaimed mass effect 2 and bayonetta. The ps3 has one mlb 10: the show. Take bayonetta out as it is also available for the ps3, but is rated 4 points lower for whatever reason and you are even.

Mike, when you were reading Digital Foundry’s FF XIII comparisons, didn’t you have a feeling that:
1) they didn’t metion the merits of the PS3 hardware and BluRay on a technical standpoint hence to HD quality of the PS3 version
2) they blamed Sqare Enix for the shoddy coding and port instead of attributing the 360 versions dissapointing low quality on the 360 hardware limitations itself
like in the Bayonetta case:
1) PS3 version quality was attributted to the PS3 hardware & not to the shitty porting admitted by Sega
2) 360 version quality was attributted to the 360 hardware not to the fact that it was coded for it & the PS3 version port was a last minute decision.

IMO MGS4 is a truly incredible game and it deserves the #1 PS3 exclusive spot. Shit…. it deserved to sell way more than it did. That game is a fucking masterpiece. It was one of the reasons I bought my PS3 and I was not dissapointed. I’ve never played anything like it. Even previous MGS games were eclipsed so utterly by MGS4.

your number doesnt prove anything because the 360 lead in the US (largest market and where most the the sales comes from) is almost DOUBLE so sales could be higher if in fact 360 games sells better.
we won’t deny that Halo 3 and Gears have one of the biggest fanbase this generation and probably bigger than any PS3 games but if you look past the fanbase and examine the numbers you will see that PS3 games sells pretty close to 360 games. for example:
-GT5p has sold more than Forza 2 and Forza 3
-MW2 sold 2M more on the 360 despite having a install base lead of 7M+ units
-LBP has sold more than Both Viva Pinata, Banjo Kazooi and the other $5 LBP rip-off on XBL
-Singstar has sold more than Lips
-Uncharted 1 sold more than Mass Effect 1 and Uncharted 2 has sold more than Mass Effect 2
-MLB the Show sells better than the 2K series
-Batman sold more on PS3
-MGS4 sold extremely well compare to the 3 previos games which sold sell copies than MGS4 with a bigger install base, it sold more than Both L4D games and it basically right up there with ODST
-Motorstorm has sold better than the PGR series, Dirt and most off-road racing games

Ms 11mill unit lead is pretty much gone and really no longer has a bearing for this generation because 1. Its gone to less than 5, 2. The 360 repair costs have negated any advantage…plus, ps3 has more known franchises releasing this year along with unannounced titles from their other studios…

Many Xbox360 users are buying a Ps3 system as a second gaming system for the Ps3 exclusives. Also, a lot of Xbox360 users are converting over to the Ps3 because they are tired of dealing with the Xbox360 system failures. Both systems get the same multi-platform games. With the Ps3 price drop and all the features that the Ps3 system offers, more people are starting to see a better value in just getting the Ps3 system.
