Review: Heavy Rain – a game or an interactive movie?
Heavy Rain is one of those titles with a lot of buzz around it. The developers at Quantic Dream attempted to craft a one of a kind experience with the game. There is no doubt that it was a risky move to make Heavy Rain, but the big question now is – was it well worth it?
Story
Heavy Rain tells the story of four main characters whose paths eventually cross tying into the mystery of the Origami serial killer. One of the main protagonists is Ethan Mars, whose son is mysteriously kidnapped by the Origami killer. Mars questions his sanity while embarking on a journey to find his missing son. Along the way he encounters Madison Paige, who is a photographer and journalist. There are two other characters: Scott Shelby a private detective and Norman Jayden, a FBI agent.

Quantic Dream did an excellent job at delivering a truly intense story with dramatic twists and turns. The atmospheric mood and mystery has been compared to that of the thriller movie, Se7en.
Initially the game starts out slow but quickly picks up momentum as more of the plot is revealed. You will truly want to keep playing to see what happens next. Anytime a movie or a game is able to keep its audience on the edge of their seat with white knuckles is sure sign of a captivating story. This is definitely something Quantic Dream was able to clearly achieve with Heavy Rain.
Lead by the fact that the experience could play out differently with each playthough adds to the believability and immersion of the game.

Gameplay/Controls
In regards to the gameplay, the controls may be the one aspect that may be a hit or miss for many gamers. However, with enough patience, gamers will be able to appreciate the uniqueness of the controls. Only after two hours into the game did I understand what Quantic Dream was trying to achieve with the unique control scheme that defy current conventions.
The main character walks by using the R2 shoulder button, similar to a race car game or Assassin’s Creed. The actions taken by the character is controlled by pressing the face buttons on the PS3’s controller. The developers for the most part have done a good job at correlating real life movements to the buttons. For example: in order for a character to squeeze through a narrow crevice, the game will prompt you to press and hold onto R1 to place your right hand against the wall, then prompts you to press L1 to place the left hand against the wall and square to lean your body close to the wall all at the same time while shimmying through the passage.

Its really difficult to call these actions Quick Time Events (QTE) as the actions happen in realtime. It’s not like a situation where you press “X†and the character goes off and cuts off a dragon’s head. Most movements are controlled by the right analog stick. Moving the analog stick in a certain way moves the character’s arms. For example, slowly moving the analog stick will make the character slowly open a door.
Things can get pretty intense when attacked by an enemy as you will have to juggle button presses, analog stick movements along with sixaxis motion movements. However, the sense of completing a difficult fight scene or an intense action sequence can leave you feeling satisfied yet relieved.
One issue with the controls is how clunky the walking can be. It can be difficult to move the character around with the constantly changing camera angles. Walking forward may end up making you walk backwards because the camera angle changed to the front of the character. These situations can be disorientating at times. However, one tip that seems to help is remembering to move the analog stick towards the direction you want to go regardless of the camera angle.
Design/Visuals
Heavy Rain is one of the most intelligently designed games I have seen this generation. Everything is persisted throughout the game, from the scars to the choices you make. Main characters can die and the story will “adjust†and proceed without them. You can make choices that will send a ripple throughout the game. Make no mistake, choices will have consequences but they do not impact the ultimate destination of the story.

A characteristic in Heavy Rain that is not evident in many games is the way the title invokes emotions. This is something that can be considered groundbreaking as Heavy Rain is the first game to utilize this mechanism properly. Strong emotions are invoked by in-game decisions that do not impact the overall story.
For example: when playing as Ethan, the player can choose to be attentive to his son by bringing him a snack and helping him with his homework. Making the right choices can lead to a scenario where Ethan’s son tells him that he loves him before getting tucked into bed. However, making selfish choices can lead to Ethan yelling and arguing with his son. One thing is for sure, regardless of which scenario you will feel strong emotions about the situation.

The English voice work is good, but at times can be inconsistent. You can tell that English is not the first language of many of the voice actors. Its difficult not to get distracted when a supposed American has an occasional slip with the accent. Also, many of the characters in the game seem to butcher the word “Origami.†The issue with some of the voice acting probably stem’s from Quantic Dream’s adamant decision to use the motion capture actors to do the voice work as well.
Heavy Rain has the best character modeling seen to date. You can literally see the pores and subtle scars on each of the character’s face. The constant raining paints a depressing world within Heavy Rain that does an excellent job of setting the mood and atmosphere. As far as design and visuals go, Quantic Dream managed to do something that not many studios have been able to achieve.

Wrap-Up
Quantic Dream aimed to make something truly unique with Heavy Rain and its safe to say that the developers have achieved this goal. Quantic Dream may be the first to tell this type of interactive storytelling, potentially paving the way for others to follow in their footsteps. Drawing a thin line between traditional games and interactive movies, Heavy Rain may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it definitely is a title well worth experiencing. I highly recommend all gamers and movie lovers to “experience†Heavy Rain.

interactive movie, but good. very innovative, i like these types of games i hope they make like a war commander type of game like command and conquer and all ur decisions play a role in how ur decisions mash with ur “army”…that would be fun

Awesome review just finished reading every word. You and me have the same dislike. The camera sometimes is not very good other then that the whole entire game is awesome a true must own. And that picture you posted of Scott Shelby looks really good graphically. PS3 has amazing graphics capability Only PlayStation. Also i like what you wrote about the emotions between Ethan and his son no game has ever done anything like that. I hope this new genre becomes standard. This is a game that has a lot of replay value and Sony needs to release a 3D interactive movie on the PLAYSTATION Network in full 1080p and 60 running fps i will buy it for sure. Quantic Dream is a developer that Sony needs to buy soon.

I really wish theyd implement this into movies rather than 3d.
Walking wasn’t to bad, As for the origami mispurnuciations I thought they intentionally did that (So many people i know wouldn’t know what the hell the word even meant).

Is good they made the game.

I’ll be picking this one up when it’s a bit cheaper.

This “game” is almost as good as my View-Master and LP’s were back in the day. Christopher Price is definitely a better voice actor.

im getting this game tonight or 2mro morning. it was sold out last week in my town, so i got AvP last week. cant wait to play heavy rain. . .

Roca.:
Don’t bother with that bitter lowlife crying loser. He’s the only one that thinks like that Heavy Rain is making record selling almost a million sold it already did half of that.
I will be getting Heavy Rain and God of War March 18th.
I already got FFXIII it works fine on my Xbox 360 it cost me just cents. Later i will report how it is.
Heavy Rain is game that that needs to be own the same goes for God of War III. God of War III has been getting a lot of perfect score that haven’t yet being publish only the official PS3 magazine gave it a 9/10 and some other site too the rest like IGN is perfect score.
For my 23rd birthday tomorrow join this and everything included as a gift LoL http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/group.php?gid=349267214020

Actually 5pm GMT.. what is that…Noon est?

I personally loved the game. The Controls are messed up though but once you get through the learning curve it’s not to bad but I’m sure this could be simplified. The game is very interactive and the mystery draws you in so the controls become a side distraction after a while. The motion control was a little annoying as I find that the PS3 controller needs clear vision between the console and the controller for this to work properly. The coffee table in front of the TV caused me to sit up everytime Just to use the motion control. I didn’t get much time with it but I could tell that this was a game to try if you own a PS3.
March 8th, 2010
On a side note you have to hold a button to walk in Assassins creed. I don’t remember that? I hated the game but I don’t remember hating it for that reason because that would annoy me.
March 8th, 2010
I bet is going to be a lot of perfect reviews today this game might beat GTA IV’s Metacritic score of 98. Just the God of War Collection has a 91 score.
March 8th, 2010
All I have is the demo and I agree with CAD about the “tank controls, but you get used to quickly enough. I just need more time to play games. Damn friends intruding on my life
March 8th, 2010
@CAD
In Assassins creed you need to hold a button to run, not walk.
I think it was L1 plus X to run….

CAD sounds so jealous is so funny how is showing. Everyone is buying and enjoy Heavy Rain all they got was a rip off crappy RPG from EA soon to be on PS3 too along with Splinter Cell: Conviction.
March 8th, 2010
lol@Ivan
How does CAD sound jealous?
“I personally loved the game. ”
Maybe that confused you

Okay i can’t really hear him because well he’s just writing. But his words all seem to be heading to JEALOUSLY.

The tank controls take a little getting use to, but once you get the hang of it, it’s not bad at all.
It had some of the best action sequences I’ve played in gaming period. I think knowing that if a character dies – and there is no game over or continue – makes things a lot more intense.
One of the best games I’ve played… ever.
March 8th, 2010
I died laughing when BJ told what happened to him at the end of the game after he made it there with all his characters alive..!

“One of the best games I’ve played… ever.”
Until you play God of War III that is.
Heavy Rain is still awesome a true must have game.
March 8th, 2010
Roca,
Without spoiling… it was intense. I had some close calls in the game, but ended up doing really well. And to make it that far and not have everything workout in the final scene pissed me off.
No worries though. I just reloaded the chapter and did it again.
Ivan,
I know. Only about a week to go.
March 8th, 2010
Please no spoilers unless you post it in the forums topic with spoilers listed in the Title.
Thank you
March 8th, 2010
Cad,
I agree with you. The innovation is great in this game. This is a game that every Ps3 owner should try. I’m glad that you are impressed with this game. My favorite Xbox360 game is the Gears of War series.
Final Fantasy comes out this week. I will be getting this game. Generally, I don’t play too many role playing games. However, I can’t wait for GOW3 to come out. I like games like GOW3 the best.
March 8th, 2010
Wow did CAD say something positive about the PS3? I’ll have to rethink calling you a blind fanboy.
@ Carl: What happened man, is some one on your account? You used to be quiet impartial but now your like a 10 year old with a keyboard.
March 8th, 2010
I’m a little worried about FF13
I hope I wont be disappointed at the end! Final Fantasy has been one of my favorite gaming series along with Uncharted, GoW, GT, Zelda and RE.
GoW3 will truly be epic and it’s probably going to hurt FF13 March sales for those ppl who look for reviews before being a game
March 8th, 2010
Roca,
Considering that you are a huge Final Fantasy fan, I certainly don’t want you to be disappointed with this game. I guess will find out shortly. I expect both games to sell well, especially GOW3. The gaming store that I normally go to has nearly three hundred pre-orders alone for GOW3.

The Japanese don’t have the same concept of lucky numbers as we do. When you look at it, it is kind of true though.
VII (lucky number) – propelled the franchise to a mass audience. To this day it’s still regarded as many peoples favorite game/RPG.
XIII (unlucky) – very mixed views from critics and fans alike. It could potentially change the way a lot of people feel about the franchise.
I’m not sure it’s the numbers fault though. The SE of today is nothing like the SE of the past. They’ve churned out nothing but average to below average titles for years now. I think the magic has been dead for a while now.
Guess we’ll find out tomorrow though.
March 8th, 2010
“I think the magic has been dead for a while now”
ever since Enix and Squaresoft merged
March 8th, 2010
X-XII and Kingdom Hearts were all really good.
I think they’re just shifting focus to casual and western gamers too much.
I’m pretty sure XIII will be great. Living up the the high expectations put on it, it’s easy though.

Picked the game up late last night and hell i didnt stop playing untill bout 4-4:30 this mourn lol time flies sometimes. Anyway the walking is a pain in the ass and it starts pretty slow but its a pretty damn interesting game so far. People compare this to seven well I think it also has some SAW influence in it to me.

FFXIII won’t be as good as FFX or FF12 for sure. It will be a little bit of a letdown for fans. But still worth buying on PS3.
March 8th, 2010

lol i said that too
March 8th, 2010
Ghost, yeah I thought the same thing. Kind of like a mix of Ransom, 7, SAW, and a bunch of other movies.
March 8th, 2010
@Liquid…that was the dumbest fucking thing that Ivan wrote I’ve seen on here in a long time.
I know CAD can be a fucking uneducated nob when he wants to, but at least he doesn’t make threats like that.

TeamXbox – 50/100
“Finaly Fantasy is not as good teh Haloz or teh Call o’ Dutyz. It’s gay. Where are the guns and teh first person perspectivez?”
Typical.
March 8th, 2010
I thought 12 was pretty good. The battle system was good, but the story wasn’t as good as the other ones.
March 8th, 2010
hey guys, can you spot the similarities between these 2 quotes:
TeamXbox: “Finaly Fantasy is not as good teh Haloz or teh Call o’ Dutyz. It’s gay. Where are the guns and teh first person perspectivez?”
CarlB: “teh grapixksz in de cutszenes is teh best only on Ps3!. Cutzscenes is deh game!”

maybe the same xbot writer? same troll? what do you guys think?
March 9th, 2010
@OS, just winding ‘em up. Looks like it worked
It was actually a compliment, but I doubt any of them have experience with that era, let alone the “tech” or the “media” mentioned. I put game in quotation marks because I think it moves beyond just being a “game” per say and blurs the line between gaming and drama. Of course they took it as an insult, but that’s what you get when their “nostalgia” only goes as far back as the PS2 and they think “LP” is some sort of emoticon, not to mention they can’t think beyond console “warz”, so they therefore translate anything they see into that context only.

Study predicts PS3 will win the console war
http://www.networkworld.com/news/2010/030810-study-predicts-ps3-will-win.html

March 9th, 2010
@cad
you really became attached to the characters in fable or cared what happened to them.
@Bj

So it’s just a B-grade movie with button tapping, Generic story? LOL
March 9th, 2010
Speaking of RPG’s I just finished Mass Effect 2 last week. One of the best games I’ve played on the 360 so far. 30 hours of gameplay on my saves.
Such a brilliant opening scene. Opens as it means to go on.
Any PS3 users thinking of buying this on PC?
March 9th, 2010
CON – “One of the best games I’ve played on the 360 so far”
understandable!
March 9th, 2010
LOL @Roca
Sooo True
March 9th, 2010
CON:
So you haven’t play anything besides Mass Effect 2 wow that must suck. 30 hours you must suck then. The opening seen is weak a stupid bad animated explosion follow by horrible looking AI.
No one will bother with this crap not even on PC. Every seems to have already forgotten about it. Just like Left 4 Dead pure garbage. The best game i own right now For Xbox 360 are on PS3 and PC also GTA IV and Bioshock. The rest of my game are pirated.
March 9th, 2010
LMAO @ Ivan
you are a funny dude Ivan, your comments always crack me up
March 9th, 2010
haha ivan eh lets think for a second Remember when you wer hyping MAG and den you wer shit at it? you said it was average shooter when you got it, but you had played the beta so you knew what to expect. how does that work? btw MAG is brilliant. . . ivan you just seem to write list about sony exclusives and den dont even buy half them. . .im no saint either but i only buy sony games, rarely multiplat. . . so ivan why do you deny being a fanboy? look ill go first. . . my name is liquid and im a sony fanboy. see its not hard to do
March 9th, 2010
Actually i enjoy MAG is great if you play with smart gamers which is really hard. And i buy any game i hype.
But MAG is basically a regular FPS with a lot people a average graphics worth $40 or less not $60 i enjoy Warhawk a lot more.
March 9th, 2010
at least he admited MAG should have been $40 (I think $60 is fair enough since there is no monthy fee to keep the servers running with no lag)
and that MAG was not was he expected…too bad Xbots can’t do the same about ODST
March 9th, 2010
Roca.:
So true. Microsoft would make Halo a yearly thing for sure and idiotic Xbot will keep buying the game. I still got hope for MAG in the box it says is going to have future ADD-ON DLC. MAG is very easy to play but so many people you die fast. Also Squad Leaders and Platoon plus even Company leader just collect point they don’t even have mics most of the time it will be cool if some on the squad is high rank for the team to choose him as new leader if the current leader stays quiet. I was hoping to use plane and vehicles the right way the one you get feel horrible. I still like MAG.
March 9th, 2010
fair enough ivan
March 9th, 2010
No kevo, I was just saying i prefer an ending where everything goes drastically wrong. I said its in my top 5 movie endings
@CON
do you have any idea what your talking about?
@Ivan
yes you can play through again but you care a lot less about the characters.
March 9th, 2010
Like eating Friendly’s icecream and getting a massage, I prefer my movies/games with happy endings.

March 9th, 2010
Just like at the Olympics. Lots and lots of bronze.
March 9th, 2010
Sorry, I couldn’t let that go by. LOL
March 9th, 2010
Why you guys hate the 360 is beyond me. It’s the sole reason your console it what it is today. It’s basically a 360 with a PS3 logo on it. Sony deserves to be in last place and according to Sony they will lead the market because there console will have a longer shelf life once the compitition moves on. LOL Go ahead Sony be the tortois. A bunch of Fanboys traped in the past and loyal to a company that does not care.
March 9th, 2010
“Why you guys hate the 360 is beyond me. It’s the sole reason your console it what it is today. It’s basically a 360 with a PS3 logo on it. ”
LMFAO You really are brain dead aren’t you? HAHAHA Yeah Sony got into the consol business because they had a time machine and seen MS built the 360. LOL tool.
The PS3 is 1000 times better than the POS 360. I’m going to buy a 3rd one for my daughter. I may as well have one on every TV.
March 9th, 2010
“Sony deserves to be in last place” Sorry to wake you from your dream but MS is in LAST place already.
Chop the one year from the World totals not US totals. Even the US numbers would be ahead.

He’s just trying to get some attention to Xbox 360 LMFAO how pathetic. He wishes what he wrote was true. Microsoft and Nintendo would both need to upgrade while the PS3 was released powerful enough to last decades/generation.

you realize the 360 is evidently a 10 year console. Thats sad considering its havn probs keepn up with third party titles.
March 10th, 2010
RomasantaMC:
Microsoft is saying Xbox 360 console is 10 years console because what Sony said the PS3 is. Sony started this trend now Microsoft is trying to mimic but i don’t blame them it can save them billion by doing a ten console instead of a 5 year it benefits everyone from customers, developers, and themselves.
March 10th, 2010
Sony started the trend now Microsoft is beating them at their own game but I don’t blame them there can be only one.

I gotta laugh at everything that makes CarlB looks stupid (not that he needs any help)
Ivan is cool, he keeps this balance, and have CarlB and CAD under total control. but the most important thing is that he is not afraid to speak the truth about the 360
Liquid

March 11th, 2010
Liquid,
Ivan just exercised twice as much maturity and civility in this thread than you and roca combined. Congrats to you and roca on sounding the most idiotic and childish here.

“same chant every year for the last 4 years. Maybe it will finally come true next year.”
That’s odd, as the PS3 hasn’t even been on the market for 4 years.
Including this month we have another 6 months to go for that feat.
March 11th, 2010
fucking CarlB making stuff up again
March 11th, 2010
phranc and roca,
“That’s odd, as the PS3 hasn’t even been on the market for 4 years.”…”fucking CarlB making stuff up again”
If you read again, you will see the “chant” being referred to is:
“I can’t wait for January when you see your precious beloved console pass and raped or outer the console businessâ€
Nov 2006- PS3 released, Sony fans had already started chanting 360 will be passed in overall total worldwide sales or out of the console business by Jan ’07, and well before PS3′s actual release.
Jan 2007 (1)
Jan 2008 (2)
Jan 2009 (3)
Jan 2010 (4)
Four Januaries have passed, representing four years of Sony fans chanting the same thing, and it still hasn’t happened.
March 11th, 2010
*yawn* is he still talkin bullshit?
March 11th, 2010
@Carlb thanks for pointing this out only 3yrs and 2months in Ps3 life time means I screwed up my previous estimates.
According to VGcharts Ps3 has 85.1% of xbox sales.
According to wiki release dates
Ps3-3yrs 5months
xbox-4yrs 10months
Meaning Ps3 has 85% of 360 sales in 70% of the 360s time. So the PS3 is winning the console war.
CarlB your reasoning would mean we all turn a year older Jan, first. No more forgetting birthdays:)
March 12th, 2010
romasm your reasoning would mean nobody was talking about the PS3 before it actually released… think about it.

they seem to ignore this fact. No matter how many times it is explained to them.

“they seem to ignore this fact. No matter how many times it is explained to them.”
As has been mentioned here before, 360 having millions more overall in consoles means millions more in software sales; the bread and butter of console manufacturers is not hardware, but rather software, not to mention the fact that Sony is still taking a loss on every PS3 sold.
March 12th, 2010
Rarely does a manufacturer ever make a profit on the sale of a console.
http://www.gamespot.com/news/6140383.html
this isn’t the loss Ps3 is making but don’t say it as if microsoft isn’t losing money on each cosole.
Shouldn’t the pre hype of both consoles even each other out?
March 12th, 2010
I really want to meet the person that thought the PS3…hell..ANY console was going to sell 10 million in two months.
March 12th, 2010
err.. I meant three months.
March 12th, 2010
romasm, the article you are quoting is over 4 years old. Microsoft isn’t losing money with each console they sell this year, Sony is.
phranc, I never said they were thinking logically.
March 12th, 2010
Sony is not losing money anymore idiot
March 12th, 2010
@carlB
you were right and so is Ivan

March 13th, 2010
romasm, the article you are quoting there is over 7 months old and before the PS3 price drop.
Ivan,
(Feb 5, 2010, Kotaku)
“Checking in this week, we find the company is still losing money on every PS3 sold. But now, it’s only $18. Yes, having reduced the functionality and the size of the console, and benefited from natural declines in the cost of component parts since the PS3 launched in 2006, Sony has got the PS3 down to the point where by 2011 the company estimates it’ll finally be making money on every console that goes out the door.”
http://kotaku.com/5465528/sony-still-losing-money-on-every-ps3-sold-but-not-as-much
March 13th, 2010
I don’t understand how the hell they could cut that much from the Ps3 and 360 production costs in such a short amount of time.
Carl you are right that software is where the money is at, so loss in hardware sales is usually insignificant when it boils down.
March 13th, 2010
Say they sold 12.7M units like last year… that’s 228.6M that I’m sure Sony would rather keep for something else if they had a choice this year. That dollar figure is almost 3 times the 78.7M in software sales they did last year.
Either way you are right, as console manufacturers typically make the majority of their profits in the second half of the console’s lifecycle, and seeing as how PS3′s isn’t even a third of the way through it’s own, Sony is still doing very well.
