Microsoft: No Blu-ray on Xbox 360
Most gamers, game developers, and game publishers must surely realize the Xbox 360 needs Blu-ray, whether they admit it or not. Unfortunately, Microsoft doesn’t agree, so the chances of the high-capacity HD disc format ever making it on to the Xbox are remote.
Games are no longer the small, bedroom-made efforts they once were. They’re now big-budget blockbusters with state-of-the-art visuals, stunning soundtracks, and hugely complex storylines. And all of that uses data, something which Blu-ray has so much more capacity for than DVD-9 does. Playstation 3 uses Blu-ray, Xbox 360 uses DVD-9. Which is clearly a problem.
Not that Microsoft would admit as much, with director of Xbox and Entertainment Stephen McGill telling CVG:
We have no plans to adopt [a] Blu-Ray drive for the Xbox 360. In fact, the future of home entertainment started last autumn when Xbox 360 became the first and only console to offer instant-on 1080p streaming HD movies.
Oh dear, that’s not good. While I agree that digital downloads and streaming are the future for all kinds of media, including games, that’s not going to be true for a few more years at least. When the next generation of consoles will undoubtedly be with us. So there is no excuse for Microsoft not to now adopt Blu-ray for the Xbox 360. Except, of course, pride.

The limitations of Xbox360′s disc format is starting to show. The extra space that blu ray discs provides for gaming is great. The format that Sony adopted is starting to pay off.

1080p streaming may be “the future of home entertainment”, but Blu-Ray is the “right now” of home entertainment, and Microsoft doesn’t have it. They package with the “yesterday” of home entertainment.
You need Blu-Ray to reach this gen’s full potential. I say Microsoft should include a Blu-Ray drive in their Natal SKU (and for games, not just for movies!”. It should be able to play older Xbox 360 games. They won’t even need to raise the price of the 360 when they add it. Besides, Sony is selling it for $300, why wouldn’t they?
I feel more pity for developers forced to cut/compress content to fit DVD, than for developers struggling with the PS3′s Cell.

the point is…MS is trying to evade the BD talk by saying the 360 has “1080p streaming” but they are obviously not saying what BD does for gaming!
L.A Noire developers are already complaining about the 360 limitations. Capcom had to cut content out of Lost Planet 2 due to the 360 limitations…1.5GB from the DVD9 are reserved for a protection scheme that was cracked years ago so developers are left with 6.8.
so like I said, the 360 is not a PC and 10GB is far beyond their limitation are will probably required extra work or more dics (install is out of the question since not all 360 comes with HDD)

Doesn’t really matter. Only 1% of PCs can run Crysis but that didn’t stop them.
PCs moved from CD to DVD and I’m sure one day it will be BD. It’s not a critical factor in performance and that’s why M$ shouldn’t bother using it.

Microsoft needs Blu-ray Disc support at least for movies since the quality from the disc is better then the streaming 1080p they offer. Also i know is impossible for them to use for games. Microsoft might start losing support soon for not supporting the Blu-ray Disc Association. Why include Blu-ray Disc games for PC you still have to install them there’s really no point. Well maybe I should have said when Crysis was released only 1 % of PCs could run it.
Blu-Ray was a cool feature in a console when the PS3 was released but it’s not so much of a big deal now. I just picked up a Sony Blu-Ray player for half of what a PS3 costs, I think most people will do the same now.

PC games are compressed and unpacked during their installation. Games typically are larger than the disc size as a result.
PC games look better because of hardware. PC hardware is already years ahead of console hardware. Therefore you can have the same game on a console and PC and the PC’s resolution is so much higher than it’s console counterpart. Texture resolution can be the same or similar on brd and DVD due to texture compression tricks, but limited to hardware restrictions.

I can’t view the original CVG link at work, but it appears they are speaking more for movies than games with that quote. It would be stupid of MS to put a BRD player in the 360 at this date and time in the consoles lifetime. An Add on however shouldn’t be out of the question.
Just watch though. MS will have BR in their next console, and if they don’t, it will be a hybrid of blu ray that doesn’t play the movies but based on the same tech (to avoid Sony royalty fees, and maintain their Download scheme)

What I’m trying to establish is worth. I’d buy a 360 at $150 more than likely. What keeps me away is, a majority of it’s exclusives are also on PC. For me it wouldn’t be worth it, or it might if I had to spend more than $150 on a video card. As it is now, none of the 360 exclusives (ME2 being the latest) have recommended specs over my current PC’s specs.

The worst thing about this all is that it holds back the development of multiplat HD gaming for us all.
Having to squeeze games into a space that is less than PS2 and Wii is ridiculous. That doesn’t sound very next gen at all.
Just imagine the quality of games we could all be enjoying right now if BD was the standard format. I guarantee that average size of games wouldn’t be 4-10 hours like it is now.

I don’t think I would even spend $150 on a 360 even with a 120gig HDD. But yes, to spend $150 on a BR player when you can get a BR play and a great consol with free online play for the extra $150 is pretty stupid. I have a gaming rig and would rather spend $150-$300 updating the video card then to buy a 360. Especially when I can use a 360 controller to play those 360 exclusives. My 7i chip with 9Gigs of Ram will last longer then the 360 and even the 720.

Sorry Dave but Bluray is the past. I have a Bluray player and I have one movie and no intentions of buying physical media that will end up on my shelf and become a storage problem. Who wants to spend more money for the same movie just to watch it and put it back in the box and on your shelf. I find myself using my On Demand service from Rogers which is also offerd in HD/SD and the XBOX 360 1080P streaming and my PVR/DVR. On Demand is the reason I’m not going to satellite service and it’s there when I want it and it’s more convienient and it looks great and offers Dolby Digital. The 1080P Streaming works great on the 360 and guess what, Sony is once again following Microsfots lead and is going to offer HD Movies for Purchase and Download on PSN. Bluray my friend cannot compete with that and Blockbuster has not seem me for well over a year now. As for games, 80% of the games released don’t need hugh capaity for disk storage and if more focused on Online and Multiplayer aspect which extend the games life far greater then what Final Fantasy can do once your finished with the game and becomes another trade in. Extra disk are not deal breakers so I have no idea why developers would complain. Download is the future and disk are going out the door.

Ok my 2cents:
Nothing on consoles looks better than crysis..the 3 games that come close are killzone, uncharted, and gow3…oh lookey all ps3 exclusives…I know this because I have crysis and I can run it at the highest settings never dipping below 60fps..ok maybe a dip here or there..
Continuing, the reason the pc can get away with using dvds is because, the dvd only holds zipped/compressed files, that, when “installed” on your pcs hard drive, is only needed for essential information…
If, for example they wanted to run the 10plus game, say like world of warcraft, off a disc, guess what? They’d need a BD…and wow came out 5 years ago…
Face it, sony made a good move with the bd, as is evidenced and proved by the developers such as rockstar, square, capcom among others stating having to cut back their games because of the 360s hardware limitations and faulty hardware…ok that last one was from my list lol

You get what you pay for. The Ps3 is one of the best blu ray players on the market. Its features and overall performance are top notch. There is a reason why the Ps3 is still one of the top blu ray players years after it was released.

Like I siad before if your games are being cut back then blame Sony because had there been no market confusion and there was a clear cut choice when the 360 launched then maybe Microsoft would have adopted Bluray but at the time DVD was a clear choice. Well having built in WiFi means you cannot upgrade so the 360 made the right decision. Many PS3′s are going down and a good amount of you have had to pay for your fixes even under warrenty. Having a controller with a replaceable battery is better then having a controller you will have to replace when the battery life is at it’s end. Lets also have a LOL moment at the short ass recharge wire they provide. LOL I’m also going to laugh my ass off when Sony starts charging for cross-game chat. LOL But LIVE is much better and PSN is a Joke.

Well, I certainly love blu rays. I just came from the store loading up on James Bond blu ray movies. They are on sale this week. I can’t wait for Lord of the Rings to come out on blu ray.

So you would rather take no wi-fi over wi-fi, a controller that you need to buy batteries/charger for rather than one with an internal battery and a charger, and a good warranty over good reliability, in 2 consoles that cost the same?
I’m not buying that one. Would your tone be different if those features between the 2 consoles were switched?
I can take “the PS3′s short ass charge cable”, but PSN isn’t a joke. Think about if you want to go on and play some COD or Battlefield, or something. I don’t see a $50/year difference. In fact, I see nearly no difference. I’m not saying that XBL isn’t better than PSN, but I AM saying that the difference isn’t that huge.

Funny, that’s what I hear when I come to (Sony) gamer forums but when I go to AV forums their not too keen on the PS3 anymore.
I got a standalone player because I used a PS2 as a DVD player for a long time. In the end it was loud, clunky to use (in comparison) and performed poorly. After that I decided I wouldn’t make the same mistake again. Besides I’ve already got two consoles hooked up to the TV, I didn’t want another one.

Ok I hope you mean th AVSForums. The only reason they are not too keen on the ps3 is because they are going for the latest and greatest in AUDIO and video quality. I’m also a regular on the avs forums, so if your gonna post about them, don’t post bullshit. The peeps at avs are pretty top notch and are true enthusiasts meaning they will recommend products based on a budget and preference you post. But they won’t hesistate recommending a ps3, quit posting bullshit.

I believe the LotR blueray releases are supposed to coincide with The Hobbit. I heard that the regular version comes earlier with the full extended version when The Hobbit hits theatres. Rumor or truth, I too am waiting for the BD versions. I have the full extended Boxed versions of the LotR on DVD, and it upscales very well on the PS3, but native BR will be just bitchin, heh.

It’s supposed to arrive in two parts. To my understanding the first one will show how gandalf gets the map and key from the dwarf king who escapes frp, Dol Guldor from the withcking (Witch-king of Angmar) who was known as the Necromancer in the Hobbit. Then tells the whole Hobbit story and the socnd part will tie up loose ends between that and The Fellowship.
I personally am waiting for the Extended BRD edition and not buying the one coming out soon. If you don’t do the extended edition, you might not do them at all imo.
