Ubisoft’s new DRM backfires on Assassin’s Creed II
Assassin’s Creed II utilizes the new digital rights management system that needs to communicate with a server to authenticate the game. Ubisoft’s controversial new DRM for the PC backfired on the company after it was heavily attacked yesterday.
Many criticized Ubisoft for its new server reliant DRM system. Gamers who purchased Assassin’s Creed II for the PC found that you must be connected to the Internet to play the game. Once authenticated online gamers are able to play Assassin’s Creed II despite the fact the game does not have an online component.
It seems like pirates did not like Ubisoft’s new DRM strategy as a denial-of-service attack was launched against the DRM servers. This caused one of the new DRM-servers to become unreachable making the game unplayable.
The game requires users to be constantly connected to the DRM server while playing Assassin’s Creed II. If the connection becomes interrupted, the game stops the user from continuing.
Online authentication reliant systems are not really new. Those familiar with Xbox Live may have already experienced a similar situation. Games purchased over Xbox Live require the original purchaser to be logged in online in order to play the game. This usually happens when re-downloading the game onto a new system from the same account.
It’s a smart way to circumvent piracy and game sharing. To Ubisoft’s credit, Assassin’s Creed II has yet to be hacked on the PC.

6.8GB is the MAX data they will get on a single disc vs 50GB on the PS3….and soon Bluray will hold up to 66GB of data
FF13 install of the 360 are:
5.9GB Disc 1
5.8GB Disc 2
6.6GB Disc 3 <—200MB short of the limit, they probably compressed the shit out of it to make the rest of the game fit on that 3rd disc

Silent Hunter 5 has the same mechanism from Ubi & ‘Skid Row’ has already taken care of it. Come March 9th when this thing his NA, there will be even more people looking at breaking it.
In all, it costs Ubi more money, pisses off more people (such as the US Armed Forces), they then have to spend more time changing the protection because of pissed off people, and it gets broken anyways.
Bethesda got it right with Oblivion.

Final Fantasy XIII is awesome, the linearity of it don’t bother me one bit, infact this game reminds me of X in a weird way. I really didn’t like 12, the story was too political and there was no decent twist the FF series is known for.

That really sucks. I’m against that shit. Needing to be online to play an offline game is fucking ridiculas. It’s moments like that that make me glad I do the majority of my gaming on consoles and not PC. And thank goodness the games I do play don’t require that shit.

I am worried. If 360 is stuck with DVD like the Wii Natal can only do so much to extend the life of 360 2011 onwards.
From the looks of cheap casual shovelware that infested the Wii Natal games wont be different due to development budget.
Natal games = game software + Natal software on a DVD? or Natal will have a separate installation software disc?
M$ can not live on disc swapping and piracy all the time, it will really make them look really bad. And its not their style to be considered out dated.
Even if M$ pours out its billions to make a proprietory storage medium to compete with Bluray DVD still will reach its limit for the 360 & Wii soon enough & force them to roll out their new consoles many years before PS4.
