GDC: Sony reveal Playstation Move and game lineup
The big news of the day is around Sony’s press conference today at GDC. As speculated, Sony made a big splash about its motion controllers rumored to be called the ‘Arc.’ However, surprisingly Sony instead revealed that the new motion controllers will be called the Playstation Move.
Aside from the fact that the controller name is unoriginal, I can already see news headlines 10 months from now – Playstation Move fails to “Move†or Playstation Move, “Moves†to number one (play on words).
I was hoping for some new game announcements such as Resistance 3 but the Playstation Move was interesting enough. Some of the games that were demonstrated on stage looked quite fun, while the other ones looked pretty bland. Sony introduced a new upcoming game for the PS Move called Sports Champions. The game is pretty much a Wii Sports-like game with various challenges.
The table tennis game actually looked quite fun as you can do back spins and different moves real time. The golfing game piqued my interest as well as it “looked†quite realistic. The player’s swing seems to match 1:1 on the screen. Another game shown was a street fighting game where your punches were replicated onto the screen. Apparently, the controllers provide vibration feedback when you make contact with the opponent. The game I was most excited to see demonstrated was Socom 4. Sony actually showed gameplay footage on stage.
According to Jack Tretton, head of SCEA, if you are a good golfer in real life then you will be a good golfer in the game. In turn if you are a good golfer in the game then you will be a good golfer in real life. Its a bold claim to make, but if its true then I can see a whole new audience that might be interested in the Playstation Move. I can already see the Playstation Move offering middle aged men a way to practice their golf swing.

Insomniac Games already say their were working something new not R3. Also PlayStation Move is a better name then Gem, Arc or Wand way better. Plus the full thing will be revealed at E3 and no it won’t failed as you are hoping it will.
So far the only thing i see this doing is selling great and destroying the Wii audience by taking over.

Have you checked out the SOCOM 4 move demo? The guy was sitting on his arse and playing the game with the “move” dildo controller as the crosshairs.
This gametype style seems to be popular when Resident Evil 4 wii came out so I don’t see why it would change.
Sony competently showed that Move will indeed be able to used for hardcore games with very little overhead in programming. If you want the option you have it, if not, you don’t have to use it. I personally think Dead Space 2 will be great with this interface.

I’m actually kind of psyched about this. especially since it’s easy to implement in hardcore games. I’m looking forward to Dead Space 2 with this control scheme. That should be awesome.
I don’t see Natal being able to do something like that.
I really believe Natal will have to eventually also come out with a wand controller. Natal will sell though because the tech “looks cool” and they really need to sell it on that. Maybe I lack imagination but I don’t see what can come out other than mini games for it. Especially with it reportedly using 30% of the processor.
If anyone remembers the delay in Lair with the sixaxis explained as they wanted you to feel as you were pulling on reigns…hence the delay….I can see this issue affecting Natal games, but it would be hardware in this instance.

After seeing this I am more convinced that I am more favourable to having a physical controller (even if it is almost exactly the same as the Wii)
In essence, I am prepared to buy the “Move” but will have to try before I buy the Natal system. I am not convinced at the effectiveness of Natal, ie using movement of not only hands but fingers etc to control. Just sounds really finicky and I like having a physical controller, not thin air.

Also, imagine multi-platforms games being put on both the Move and Natal, then the PS3′s version losing even more stuff through that 30% processing power lose -and- taking longer time to be implemented.

As for Demon’s souls 2 with the Move, as long as it is optional, so I can try it both ways, then sure.

You can try the ‘no controller’ motion gaming if you buy a PS eye for the PS3. Although the games are laking, you will still get a sense of it… I didn’t like it and wanted something in my hand instead.
