SOCOM 4: juicy details revealed at GDC
Sony announced SOCOM 4 last week to much fanfare. This week the Zipper Interactive developed title was demonstrated on stage during the Sony’s GDC press conference. This is the first time the gameplay has been shown and it’s looking pretty good.
The game looks like it’s shaping up very nicely especially with the gameplay. The game remains a third person shooter as it should be, with the character remaining dead center on the screen like the rest of the games in the franchise. You can do a zoomed-in over the shoulder view for extra precision.
There seems to be a dedicated-latch on cover system, unlike the awkward free-form cover system that Slant Six implemented in SOCOM: Confrontation. Also, SOCOM 4 features a roadie-run like in Gears of War. The environment also appears to be semi-destructible. Squad control implementation is there by issuing way point markers.
SOCOM 4 starts half way through the video
The motion control implementation looks promising for SOCOM 4 as well. From the looks of the demonstration it seems like the Playstation Move delivers controls close to mouse movements, which isn’t a bad thing. However, it makes me wonder if Zipper will have separate rooms for Playstation Move users and DS3 users. EPIC Games had separate rooms for keyboard and mouse users on the PS3 for Unreal Tournament 3.
As a hardcore SOCOM fan, I have to say that I can’t wait to see more gameplay footage of SOCOM 4.

thanks god the motion controls for Socom are optional
March 11th, 2010
eh just another thing that sony’s gonna struggle with prolly. they should have use a diff game to represent the controller better like a play boy mansion game or something
March 11th, 2010
I think every game will have motion controller support but optional which is awesome.
And yeah SOCOM 4 looks and will be great. That game is going to bring so many new multiple PS3 owners like SOCOM series did on PS2 most SOCOM 2 players had over 3 PS2 consoles.
PlayStation Move is already looking really promising.

What is SOCOM?

Looking at Socom4, man, makes me wish that I didn’t waste 30 bucks on Socom confrontation.
I don’t know if it was just me, but with that background music and the shooting style/grenade throws, socom 4 made me remember/feel Uncharted 2 there right away, which I really liked.

SOCOM is the most beloved series in the entire PlayStation massive catalog. Is the ultimate game.
sorral:
SOCOM: Confrontation is actually really good now especially with the new add-on. I just hate the view Slant Six made it with, is bad you can’t see your your entire player like other SOCOM games on PS2. SOCOM 4 is gonna huge online and even offline. I see myself paying a lot of extra money just to get a bit earlier.

This looks pretty good, and is a geat demonstration on the use of Move with hardcore games. At no point do the games have to suffer with 30% processor loss like Natal does. Even Aaron Greenberg has said in kotaku’s podcast that Natal wont be used as an interface for hardcore games. They have something new and exciting planned which translated to me as Casual only crap.

Project Natal is trying a new awkward too ambitious thing that’s destine to fail especially on the weak console hardware/software. Sony is keeping everything simple which is going to pay off in huge money later on.

CarlB’s way of playing the game will be more like “swallow those balls”

Roca.:
I just Microsoft’s official project natal videos and yeah the ball game sucks. Plus the celeb that are playing the game look like idiots. Natal fail as a game device is a sure bet.
March 11th, 2010
Natal games graphics looks like Nintendo’s Mii
March 11th, 2010
Roca.:
If you see everything NATAL is. Is just a video for now and Microsoft is hoping to make it a reality with their shitty weak ass console. No controller i thought this is was gaming. Natal is good for fat people since most if not all will have u mostly standing up doing a lot of stress work.
March 11th, 2010
Natal will become the next eye toy Kinetics simulator.
March 11th, 2010
phranctoast:
NATAL is going to suck. And knowing Microsoft it will be a high price peripheral.
The official US PlayStation forum is so awful now it looks hideous and is glitchy as hell it won’t let me reply and it lags a lot. The guy that re-design the website should be fired the whole site is crap now.

Looks exactly like the wii controller only with pretty gay lights.
Why the fuck would you play like that if you’re sitting down anyway. You’d just use the controller.
March 11th, 2010
@CON
Why do people like the wiimote for RE4 then?
March 11th, 2010
CON:
If you think that’s gay wait until Project Natal comes to light is going to suck. PSM will destroy WM and PN.

CON “Why the fuck would you play like that if you’re sitting down anyway”
“Slap those balls!!” seems like a game right up your alley
March 11th, 2010
I was only saying I don’t see the point if your sitting down anyway but whatever floats your boat.
March 11th, 2010
Fable III is going to be a Natal compatible game….I dont expect you to play the game standing up and jumping around……or slaping balls with your head

That’s it! I’m quitting console gaming. If Sony and M$ are going to be making Wii games, I’m out!

I just uploaded another video search for IvanPlayStation4LiFe on YouTube.
Barnabe Jones:
They are still going to make games like inFAMOUS 2, Killzone 3, Resistance 3, UNCHARTED 3 plus many. And the games Sony’s making for PS3 are way better then the one’s on the crappy Wii console. They are a bit similar but that’s about it.
March 11th, 2010
@BJ
just wait, if this controller turns out as responsive/accurtate as a mouse they might start implementing cross console online play again.
March 11th, 2010
“Why the fuck would you play like that if you’re sitting down anyway. You’d just use the controller.”
This may bring the precision of the mouse that the consol has been lacking for FPS. I may enjoy FPS more with that. The Wii did it totally wrong. Hopefully Sony does it right.

People if you don’t like PlayStation Move you are not obligated to buy the product. But we all know even the people that bitch the most would still buy it since most people already have a camera all they would need is PlayStation Move which might cost $50 alone. And Sony is also letting everything use their DUALSHOCK 3 or SixAxis controller.
Check out my YouTube channel i will be adding new PlayStation Move videos also on my official website.

Did you copy this from another site? It doesn’t seem like your english.

ncaissie:
No.

@Ivan
I actually played Socom:C after all the patches and fixes by slant six.
I will admit that I enjoyed it for a bit, but I ended up feeling disappointed, because of how the overall experience was. Slow navigations in menus, and so on (Compared to Resistance1-2/Kilzone2/MAG/U2, maybe I have been spoiled by those, but my point is still valid.)
I have to agree with Ncaissie and others regarding the Move vs kb/mouse. They did say that it was at least as accurate as the dualshock3/SixAxis, but those still don’t feel the same as a keyboard and mouse, especially for those PC gamers out there.
In comparison, the Metroid collection on the Wii gave me a headache, and a disappointment after a while because I tried a normal GC controller on the old GC copy of metroid before it, and it was just a lot better for me. -_- If only they didn’t remove the normal controller support in the remake collection.

Sorral:
I know they fixed it already i own the game since ages ago.
March 12th, 2010
@Ivan:
Yeah, I know that. I was replying to your old post about them fixing it, which I was saying that I already knew about and have tried it.
More info about Socom4 and the Move with a hands on, sounds pretty awesome, quote:
“Aiming the crosshairs with the Move worked well, and I didn’t feel any lag. While I was new to the game, the firefights and encounters were a blast with the controller; there is something much more satisfying about aiming at the screen with a controller instead of moving an analog stick”
arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2010/03/socom-4-played-with-playstation-move-our-thoughts.ars
Hey Mike, are you going to do/or have done a similar hands on the Move?
Oh and I hope the linking to other websites like that isn’t considered a bad thing. <.<
March 13th, 2010
sorral:
No, is not a bad thing linking. PlayStation Move is gonna be awesome if the regular PS3 titles that support are all optional since not everyone would be a fan. I would never play SOCOM 4 online with PlayStation Move i will try in un-ranked game to test it but i know i would hated i will just buy it for games like the one on that it will be bundle similar to the Wii but 100x better.
