Debate: Xbox 360 blamed for Final Fantasy XIII shortcomings
The debate over who butchered Final Fantasy XIII has reached fever pitch as fans across the globe have quibbled over some of its shortcomings. Many actually blame the Xbox 360 and Microsoft for Final Fantasy XIII’s unconventional linearity.
I’ve seen debates across NeoGAF and other forums where gamers have blamed the Xbox 360 for making Final Fantasy XIII linear. Many seem to blame the Xbox 360’s lack of blu-ray as the reason why Final Fantasy XIII is linear. Unlike all of the previous Final Fantasy games, FFXIII is as linear as a tunnel. There is no over-world, villages, backtracking, freedom, and grinding. If one were to draw a map of the world in FFXIII, it would literally be a straight line.
Destructoid recently published an interesting editorial regarding this exact topic. It’s interesting as I have been mulling it over in my mind for a while as well. I understand everyone’s frustration at some of the compromises or design decisions that have been made in the game. Some have even blamed the Xbox 360 for compromising the graphics of the PS3 version. This is just silly as it has been proven that clearly the Xbox 360 is the inferior version compared to the PS3 version.
The game is pretty much linear until the very end where there is an open world section of the game. It’s an odd design decision as it seems like Square Enix wanted to give the game an open world but couldn’t figure out how to implement it throughout the game so the developers threw it in at the end (last disc). I understand that with multiple discs on the Xbox 360 that a true over-world can be difficult to achieve.
Long gone are the days of PSOne, where 60 percent of the content could be replicated across four discs like in Final Fantasy 7 and 8. However, other games such as Mass Effect 2 have overcome such design issues rather tactfully. Yes, ME2 was only two discs and FFXIII is three discs, but the implementation can still be similar.
In Mass Effect 2, BioWare got around the disc swapping issue by making two large “worlds†or areas. The first disc contained all the data for the location near the first part of the game, and the second disc contains the areas for the later part of the game. This did force gamers to put disc 1 back in to complete the last mission, but it wasn’t a big deal.
Square Enix could have implemented a similar technique across all three discs. In the end its not the fault of the Xbox 360 or Microsoft, but that of Square Enix. It was up to the studio to design the game and it could have been implemented in a number of different ways, but hasty last minute decisions did put Square Enix in a tough spot.

Microsoft is to blame they are ruining this whole industry to the ground. Final Fantasy XIII was a new game until Microsoft starting writing checks to Square-Enix to bad they sold out for that version of the series. Final Fantasy Versus and FF14 will be PS3 exclusives so expect a real proper next gen sequel soon exclusively on PlayStation 3.

Nuh-uh-uh. Not “360 blamed”, but rather “Square Enix blamed”. They’re the developers, and (unless Microsoft actually told them to compromise the quality on the PS3 version, which I won’t think about in order to get a good sleep tonight) they are to blame.
Sure, the 360 probably wasn’t able to support their initial vision of the game, but that’s no excuse when there is another platform with more than enough juice to handle it.
Damn Square Enix and their lazy developing.

Saber is right. As much as I hate to admit this, it’s not Microsoft’s fault this generation that games are going multi-platform. It’s the companies’ fault for being sell-out assholes.
Microsoft didn’t force Square Enix to take the money. They chose of their own free will. Eat the fruit Enix and become immooooortal!!!! muhahahahaah……ok that’s enough of that.
But do you get my drift? And how many times have we seen this happen before? GTA 4, DMC4, Armored Core 4, Virtua Fighter 5, Tekken 6, and so on.
This isn’t new.What gamers SHOULD do is boycott future purchases of these so called sell-out companies. THEY are the ones using you! Microsoft is only doing business….and consider this you’re only time Microsoft, that I ever have your back.
And on top of that the only commercials I’ve seen for Final whatever have been for the 360. I have yet to see one commercial of Final Fantasy 13 for the PS3.
And I was angered by that….As right now I’m a neutral fan of any console. I’m highly disappointed in Sony for letting an exclusive game like this slip from their hands.

Microsoft…your time is coming. Although you’re making slick deals now to get away with “fake” sales (true sales show revenue received from your OWN productions, not someone else’s), eventually you’re time will run out.
I’ll be shocked if even half of the dedicate Xbots return to purchase Xbox 3. After all the hardware failures, lies, deceptions, high pricing, self ego, third party stealing, frailty money making deals, only an idiot would buy the next generation of xbox video gaming.

it’s reasonable for fans of the series to get pissed of at MS, but the reality is Square Enix are a business with employees to pay. It’s a business decision by them to make it multi-platform, therefore it is SE and SE alone that must take the blame for this.
I’m more than happy to bag the shit out of MS, Sony or even Nintendo, but blame must be placed correctly, and in this case it isn’t MS.

Interesting point there, mate.
Look at the brighter side if this didn’t happen I believe we won’t have the AAA games Sony is making.
Unlike M$, who rely on 3rd party made games, Sony’s attitude is “If you wanna get it done do it yourself!” making new and innovative games of their own. This has proved to be Nintendo’s secret weapon over the PS1& PS2.
First party exclusive games should take first priority than third party exclusives. The Wii is a testament to that and from the looks of it Sony has learned its lessons well with games like Uncharted 2.

The linearity of the game and every other shortcomming is the fault of Square itself.
So the game is a bit linear. That hasn’t stopped me from playing and enjoying it a bit.
I’m actualy on disc 3 now.
Disc 1 time: 9:30
Disc 2 time: 15:30
There is a final boss for disc 2 and he has 5 sections and over a half million HP total.. oh yeah that was a lot of fun lmao
By the time I reached disc 3 i was on 25 hours.
You start off in some place but its not clear exactly where you are cept for some sort of l’cie training ground. That place is a pain in the ass.
When you finally get out of that place your in Pulse. So now I get to roam around in the wilds of Pulse… to which i have to say

Now your being silly. Just because of the space limits of DVD9 on Xbox doesn’t mean that the design flaws of FFXIII (no towns or talking, way too linear) is because of MS. Those are related to the way that Square designed the game.
Square decided to make it as linear as a train track.

Square appearently forgot to include a story somewhere in there too lol.

My case and point with the whole Space vs Linearity thing is simple. Lost Odyssey. 4 discs long and the game is nowhere near as linear as FFXIII. It had a hell of a lot more exploration to it than this.

Crisis Core is not as linear as FF13 you dumbass, in crisis core you can revisit previous levels, levels have multiple paths, you can talk to ppl, you gain exp points and gils, there are shops, towns, rooms, etc.

It is a fact that DVD is to blame for the game’s short comings, but in the end it’s SE’s fault for selling out their vision. Not M$. I wonder if it was even worth it for them.
In the end, I’m really enjoying XIII. It’s really different from past entries of the franchise, but it’s still one of the better RPGs this gen.

First party exclusive games should take first priority than third party exclusives. The Wii is a testament to that and from the looks of it Sony has learned its lessons well with games like Uncharted 2.

There was a funny statistic released a few months back, which stated that most of the time (around %60+ or so), ISP’s won’t even help the police track pedophiles/child porn downloaders.
So its really not down to MS, or the cops, its whether to ISP wants to release your details (and be known to the public to roll over and give your details out when the police come calling). It shouldn’t really matter if you’re not doing anything wrong, but people are odd like that.

Wow i just had to change my e-mail on a million place just upgraded to 30 MBPS i now switch from EarthLink from Time Warner Cable to Road Runner from Time Warner. I had 10 MBPS according to them with my extra $9.95 they gave me 15 MBPS but when i test my speed i got double that.
Finally a better connection just when my router got fuck up LoL. Lucky i just order a new one from Linksys.

CarlB – amen to that! You have to be a really narrow-minded Sony zealot to blame the 360 for shortcomings of the game. Same goes with the nonsense about having to cut areas etc. If you take FMV out of the equation the 360 is just a capable as the PS3. The 360′s biggest problem is the lack of partial install onto a HDD to overcome the storage limitations of a dvd. The reason why games like KZ2 and UC2 look so good has got bugger all to do with running on BluRay; it is because they had dedicated engines written for them, whereas the 360 has constantly relied on ageing platforms such as the unreal engine. The credit should go to the excellent engine designers at naughtydog et al and not the hardware.

I like the cast of XIII a lot more than XII. Sure Vanille is a bit grading, but overall they’ve already resonated more with me. Lighting FTW.
Also the story does seem to be a lot better than 12′s also.
I would give 12 the nod for better battle system and overall level design. Not to say that I don’t like 13′s battle system though.

I can’t deny that the God of war series is awsome, but it isn’t really my thing. At least not for $60.
I’m way more into RPG’s.
I still have to get the GoW Collection anyway cause I only have 1 for PS2. If I am going to play through 2 then I might as well pay the $30 for the GoW collection and play through 1 again as well. I am kinda excited to see GoW1 remastered cause it was fucking awsome looking on PS2.
I’ll get 3 when I can get it a little bit cheaper.

Which is what has me going nuts with FFXIII now.
You spend like 30 hours following a set path. You can’t get lost at all lol.
Then all of a sudden your on Pulse… That’s when shit gets complicated.

at 0:18 you will start to see this walker monster thing in the background… At 0:40 is when you go “Oh shit!” Appearently that is the FFXIII version of Adamantoise. I made the mistake of getting into battle with one of those things and it killed my whole party in one hit lmao.
At any rate… I have spent several hours wonder around checking things out and completeing side missions and I ACTUALLY started wishing that the game would “hold my hand” a bit more like it did throughout all of Cocoon lmao. It was just a shock to the system after the linear nature of the whole Cocoon segment of the game.

RPG i started playing FF Crisis Core for PSP a while back and it bored the shit outer me the only RPG that i love is Final Fantasy X, Kingdom Hearts and the Legend of Legaia. Also i still own FF7 four disc plus the PSP Classic and i just wanna playing it but improve seems awesome with better enhancements.

FF Crisis Core was kinda a dissapointment. I only played it cause FF7 is my fav RPG of all time, so I had to know the storyline.
Seems like every before and after FF7 just doesn’t add so much to the magic that made FF7 so great. Like Advent Children… So now everyone can jump like 300ft into the air and look like Dragon Ball Z characters while doing it? I don’t remember anything like that ever happening in FF7…. Visually it was awsome but it didn’t have much else going for it. Cept for Clouds new sword. That shit was awsome.
FFX is my 2nd fav in the FF series, then 9 and 12.
Kingdom Hearts was great.
One of the things that made both the PS1 and PS2 such awsome video game systems was that they had so many RPGs. The first Xbox had barely any.
Its sad that so far PS3 doesn’t have that many RPGs out for it. If you compare the PS2 and PS3 at the same point in time in their lifespans the PS2 had WAY more RPGs. If it’s a US released RPG for PS1 or PS2 name it, and I have probably either played it or still own it lmao.
For PS3 I own Valkyria Chronicles, Folklore, and Demon’s Soul and they are all good. Still needs some more traditional RPGs though.

I beat GOW1 in 3:45 minutes for the speed trophy but that does not mean the game is a 4 hour game. He’s so fucking stupid sometimes. He’s exactly the person that Ken Feldman was talking about that spreads misinformation for his own agenda……

Fallout 3 took me 75 hours, getting 100% achievements on 360 in the process. That is not including the DLC and related achievements. I don’t have those yet but plan on getting the GoTY edition sometime soon and will finish them off then. Probably another 25 hours there lol.
Haven’t played Dragon Age yet but I have a friend who owns it and said that she is currently 80 hours into the game, and hasn’t beaten it yet. I’ve heard similar things from other people about DA:O
Currently with FFXIII I have like 37+ hours into it.
I made it to Pulse with like 30 hours or so, but i have spent the last several hours just wandering around killing shit.
I can tell you from personal experience that every numbered FF game since 7 has taken me 60-70 hours of time to playthrough it for the first time (Excluding 11 for obvious reasons
)
At my best estimate… I can imagine XIII may break that trend…
I think it will take me between 70-80 hours

the 360 also doesnt have that many traditional RPGs, most of this gen RPGs are hybrids, in Japan the PS3 is loaded with traditional RPGs but they don’t make it to the us because the only japanese RPG franchise that sell well in the west is Final Fantasy….it also doesnt help when reviewers doom this genre to fail giving them low score because it doesnt have the freedom like Fallout, or because the hero is a young boy, or because it doesnt have guns. Persona, Odin Sphere, Grandia, Rogue Galaxy were awesome RPG for the PS2 but they sold poorly here in the west, so developer and publisher and not taking any risk in making this type of games because the developments cost for games this generation is so high compared to the previous gen

Development is one thing, which is usually done in Japan.
Localization is another, which companies like Atlus usually handle.
I believe that Atlus handled Persona and Shin Megam Tensei, as well as a bunch of the RPGs that were localized for english on PS2.
I miss Working Designs, which brought over alot of games like Lunar Silver Star Story and Lunar Eternal Blue. When Working Designs shut down alot of people like myself were very upset.
Alundra was another amazing game that Working Designs had brought over to the US.
RPGs have just been upsetting over the past several years because we need some really good ones here in the states and we tend to just get only a small portion of what is really out there.
Capcom had the Breath of Fire series. 1 and 2 were on SNES and both great games. 3 and 4 were both good and came out on PS1. Then they released a Steaming shit pile with BoF5: Dragon Quarter. They have not done another BoF game since, not even in Japan. Breath of fire 3 is my 2nd fav RPG of all time BTW.
This console generation on 360 I have played through Fallout 3, Fable 2, Lost Oddysey, Mass Effect 1 and 2, and Ultimate Aliance 1 and 2.
Lost Oddyssey was the only traditional RPG out of the bunch that I beat, and it was damn well worth it. Great fucking game.
This also doesn’t include the other RPGs from this generation I own but have not beat yet. Blue Dragon, Infinite Undiscovery (actually not that bad despite ratings), Last Remnant, Eternal Sonata, Eternal Arms, Oblivion.
We just need more traditional RPGs. WTF?!

First, the game is being development by Rockstar North. Yeah, you read correctly..the team behind the GTA series is making the game, so it’s not hard to get excited. Next, it will be the “Ultimate Action Game†on the PS3. The game will also be “very fresh†to gamers (good luck with that guys!) and last, it will be “truly spectacularâ€. Guess what? That’s all we know, sadly.
You can can check out the official website if you like, just prepared to be disappointed as there’s nothing but the logo above.
Rockstar says Agent will hit the PS3 in 2010. But hey, this is a Rockstar game we’re talking about. Don’t be surprised if it’s pushed into 2011.

Here is the way I see it…
FFX – everyone complained it was too linear
FFXI – everyone complained it was an MMO
FFXII – everyone complained it wasn’t turn based
FFXIII – everyone is complaining it’s too linear
FFIV – everyone is complaining it is an MMO
There were all great games, but very unique in there own way. Basically the only thing DVD robbed us of is towns and extra areas (1/2 a games worth). But towns don’t make or break a game.
After you get farther into it, the new battle system really starts to shine. It’s weird not to focus on your individual actions, but it actually works really well. PLus the cast and story are great.
All in all, I’m very happy with it.

Final Fantasy XI Online is one of the best MMORPG ever made.

I actually got the stategy quide for FFXIII but I am not using it to make prgress in the game lol. I have checked out a couple things though, like some stuff I may have missed after i passed by early points in the game.
Out of curiosity I looked up the Crystarium levels… It goes up to 10, but it looks like you only unlock 10 once you beat the game… interesting
Since I got to Pulse my party has been Lightning, Sahz, and Fang…
You can tell I haven’t used Hope and Snow in awhile cause they have 238K CP built up and waiting to be used lol. Vanille would have just as much but I had to use some awhile ago to help her deal with Hecatonchier… her fucking eidolon which was hard as all hell to beat… Probably toughest eidolon in the game for me.

I’m one of the biggest FF fans ever, I’ve completed 7-12 so many times but I just got to chapter 11 on ff13 and I’m fucking bored silly! It just seems like too little, too late to me.
It’s a shame they had to put this open world right at the end so it can just go on disc 3 of the 30 version.
Next FF I want it old school or I give up with it. I want world maps, towns and a decent big mini game (Blitzball, crads, Flying Saucer)

Sony doesn’t spend money on 3rd parties. That’s why the PS3 has games like KillZone 2, Uncharted 2, Heavy Rain, Demon’s Souls, Resistance, GT5, GoW3, etc, etc
M$ spends all of their money buying timed exclusives, which the PS3 ends up getting anyway.

Good point. But Microsoft has manage so far from really awesome luck they have been able to keep Left 4 Dead, Mass Effect and Gears of War. Outer those 3 only one is good. And yeah we get the better version later, you forgot to mention we also always manage to get it at a cheaper price but with way more content and enhancements.

Im liking the game more, it is a great RPG but as a FF game is a letdown…..but overall as a RPG game is a great game.
here are my disappointments for being FF game (again, nothing wrong with the game but we expect more from the FF franchise):
-battle system sucks
-no talking to ppl
-no towns
-no shops
-no gil in battle
-no victory sound
-only one character at a time
-no airships
-no world map
-no limit breaks
-no chocobos
-no epic boss battle soundtrack
-no mini games
-auto battles?
-cant revist previous previous levels
-weak summons
-cant chose your party for most part of the game
-no side quest
-no epic weapon to get

It does have a lot of shortcommings but it is still a good rpg, so I do agree with you there.
From what ive seen you dont really need giil as much until later on in the game, and there are a few monster you can fight that drop items worth a load of gil.
NO victory sound… yeah ive agreed on that one before.. definately need that classic FF victory music. I dunno how they could have left that one out lol
You get Chocobos later on in the game, on Pulse.
Some of the music while exploring isn’t so bad and seems to fit, but there is no victory music, and no epic boss battle music…
There are ultimate weapons but you need to upgrade to get them.
Summons are a bit weak but they can really save your ass… if your about to die using it can be the difference between life and death.
Advantages: Completely heal and raise all party members and removes debuffs
Disadvantages: removes any buffs on your party and also resets the stagger gauge
You also forgot to mention how just about every character looks like a character from a previous FF game.
And how the story isn’t as deep as preivous FF games.
One problem I had is that what should have been a HUGE plot twist was totally ruined by Vanille doing voice over work at random points in the game. Was no surprise at all and I had already figured it out way before it was revealed… no shocker there

Yeah, it’s really different and thats what sets it aside.
The linearity sucks but once you do make it to Pulse its so much better. It just sucks that it has to be that way. Appearently there is some side quests too, but having to wait this late in the game for these goodies just sucks.
It took me 35 hours just to get to the free roaming Pulse. I’m currenly at 43 hours on Chapter 11 – Dust to Dust.
I had to take a break from advanceing the story cause a certain boss was whupping my ass… this fucker has just over 3 million HP… that is not a fun battle. So I figured I would take a break and build up my Crystarium. I just maxed out the 3 core roles for my party. I have stuck with Lightning, Sazh, and Fang since I reached Pulse.
Currently im going to play around with Cieth Stones side quests before I try that boss again.

I just made it to the city of Nautilus myself.
Honestly, the story, characters, and battle system are all great. The linearity wouldn’t have even been an issue, if the broke up it up a little bit more. It’s only a minor complaint though.
It’s a great RPG, JRPG, and Final Fantasy. It’s a shame people aren’t giving it a fair chance.

While I am really enjoying the game I am a lil pissed about the battle/leveling system.
You can only advance so far because of the crystarium having huge sections unavailable until either you reach a certain point in the game.. The last section doesn’t open until you beat the game.
Until you reach Pulse you are FORCED to play through the game and fight each and every battle the way Square wants you to. That makes the linear nature of the game even worse.
Probably what I hate most about the battle system though is going up against what I call the “heavy” enemies. Where you fight up against the tougher enemies and your forced to use Ravager to build up the Stagger gauge as quickly as possible so you can then switch over to something else like more Commando’s who just can’t achieve that Stagger on there own. Since you have been to Nautilus you have fought those Lizard monsters and those Pulsework machines… so you know exactly what kind of monsters i am talking about.

I am only posting once and not replying to PS3 fanboys.
Firstly I own an Xbox 360 and a ps3. I like both consoles. But have been far more blown over by the 360 this gen. Here are my reasons:
*XBL is the success story of this gen after the nintendo wii. It makes the 360 and evolving console compared to the very dated experience of PSN (i am not going to try and explain why XBL is better than PSN, it is well documented by all major journalists, basically you get what u pay for). When i connect online with the ps3 i dont even feel that im online as there is no sense of what is going on and no sense of community like you get very strongly with the superbly polished and implemented XBL which is on another planet since the update last year, it actually feels like a new system
*gamer score is genious, and despite ps3′s attempt to imitate with trophies is no where near the same
*I prefer the the ‘modern’ 360 pad compared to the outdated ps1 clone ps3 pad
*90% of multi platform games look and run better on 360 (just do your research and visit euro gamer)
*despite what many fanboys argue the 360 has a longer list of GOOD 1st part exclusives than PS3
*NATAL is the most exciting development in console history. It will give the 360 huge potential creatively and commercially.
Now with the exclusives. The way i see it is the PS3 has what makes me want to actually own, Unchartered 1 & 2, GT5 (when it is eventually released), Killzone 2, MGS4 Heavy Rain,GOW3 and a better running FFXIII. That is pretty much it. (I have intentially left off Resistance fall of Man, ratchet and clank and motor storm) NOTE THAT PS3 FANBOYS INSIST ON LISTING EVERY EXCLUSIVE THEY CAN THINK OF EVEN IF THEY ARE NOT EVEN WORTH OWNING
Xbox has Gears 1 & 2, GTA Episodes (I have actually COMPLETED THESE AND TOGETHER ARE AS LONG A GTA IV, AND ONE OF THE BEST GAMING EXPERIENCES I HAVE EVR HAD), mass effect 1 and MASS EFFECT 2. BAYONETTA (it is that bad on the ps3 , way worst than FFXIII conversion to 360), fable ii, FORZA 3 (easily as good as what GT5 will be or close), HALO 3, HALO REACH, PGR
You will see that the lists are quite similliar so why ps3 fanboys think thery have so many better 1st party games is beyond me (i dont want an a-z list).
Note that Bayonetta in many ppls eyes is as good as GOW3 (edge gave it 10/10), again the ps3 version is near unplayable.
Now to FFXIII. The 360 has not limited this games potential. As some1 else said it was being made for the PS3 way in advance of the 360. I agree that the 360 version is not as good as the ps3 only in terms of graphics for the simple reason of memory space hence the lower resolution (it does have a higher framerate though).
This is not a trend that will continue for other games as FFXIII is unique in the fact that it has more bloody Cutscenes than any other game so takes up soooooo much space. this will not be an issue and hasnt been an issue with ANY OTHER CONVERSION. Also square didnt help the matter as they done a below par conversion (read digital founderies analysis).
Ps3 fanboys forget that 90% of multi platform games are better on the 360 (check out eurogamer). It is about time the 360 has had a taste of its own medicine as ps3 owners get short changed monthly with poorer versions than the mighty 360.
I concede that when a game is made exclusively on the ps3 it looks much better (that doesnt mean the ps3 has better graphics it just means that the developers have gone to town). And in the future there is alot of POTENTIAL with blurays extra space.
But the simple fact is it comes to the games. As you can see with my comparison of 1st party games they are similliar in length but the 360 has better versions of the multi platform games which are probably 70% of the games out there.
Also for the records Mass effect 2 is the best game of any 1st party this generation, so i can live with an inferior ffxiii on the 360.
