Rumor: Xbox 360 slim to launch with Natal?
There is a new rumoring circulating the Web pointing to a new version of the Xbox 360. Apparently there are some alleged leaked photos of the guts for an Xbox 360 slim model.
According to Kotaku, some folks from China posted pictures of what appears to be the guts from an Xbox 360. However, under closer inspection it appears that the motherboard has been radically redesigned. According to the picture, the CPU and GPU have been combined into one small chip. Also, it appears the 360 will be getting one large dedicated fan for the motherboard similar to the PS3.
The source is sketchy as its from some random Chinese forum. However, this is exactly how the PS3 slim was leaked as well. I would highly suspect that Microsoft is cooking up a new slim model in preparation of Natal. This may also entice hardcore 360 gamers into repurchasing an Xbox 360. I know some PS3 owners picked up a slim upon release as well.

If this is true i’d love to know how and where the ‘old’ 360 hard drives are going to latch onto this new machine, if older adopters do decide to buy a slim.
Or maybe they’ll come with hard drives and a transfer kit.

they might design the case to accommodate the old HDD. A new case design does not have to mean a slimmer version (particularly since a slimmer case is not going to help with their RROD heat issues)

Actually, they did the exact opposite Ivan. Steve Balmer himself said: “We may have more form factors in the future that are designed for various price points and options” (endgadget, March 6th 2010). A lot more than Sony ever admitted.

It would make sense as it has been 4 years since the release of the original 360 and a redesign would slice the weight and manufacturing cost as much if not more than the Slim did for PS3.
NVidia stopped production of the GPU less than four years (3yrs 3mo) into the original XBox lifecycle, which effectively prohibited a redesign. 360 has already lasted longer than it’s predecessor’s base GPU production lifecycle.
If it doesn’t happen this year it will likely happen in year 5 or 6. However, I’m with Kotaku and Mike on this one in betting it happens with the release of the Natal late this year.
As for the hard drive, there is 2 1/4″ of play on length past it that they could cut, or they could simply place it on the side of the unit. It doesn’t necessarily have to be “slim” as it could be shorter in heighth or width, let alone having less weight.
I can’t tell by the pic here where it would be placed or connected to, but I would guess at the bottom right first, or the top left of the board second. I bet Mike or one of the guys here would have more knowledge as to where exactly the hard drive would connect on the board pictured above. Even so, ribbon cables are not that expensive, and the case would likely determine the placement regardless of the board. They also don’t mention dimensions.

Seriously though, 4 years is an eon in computer tech, so it shouldn’t be a problem, especially as the newer models are reported by independent third parties (SquareTrade for one) to be as reliable if not more so than PS3. Besides, it’s not in Microsoft’s best interest to repeat the same mistake twice and spend even more billions in replacement costs on the existing extended warranty.

You can clearly make out “Microsoft” on the right side.

When Nintendo redesigned the NES it removed the blinking red light problem. That made the new top loading NES highly sought after.
That’s innovation.
Sega did some mad crazy shit with the Genesis, giving us several new versions, plus the Sega CD and 32x add-ons, and also was the first system that offered up backwards compatibility. Using an adapter you could play Sega Master System games on the Sega Genesis.
Then if that wasn’t good enough we also got the fucking Nomad. Being able to play some great genesis games on the go like that was fucking awsome. That’s some rock solid shit for you there bitch.

while Sega and Nintendo have “redesign” some of their previous consoles before, Sony has been the only consistently making a cheaper and smaller version of their console since they came in to the gaming industry. while ‘some’ of the redesign from sega and nintendo were bigger and more expensive versions
but still, FahKin is right..Sony didnt invented the redesigning of console but they at least have kept the trend and made them successful whereas most of Sega and Nintendo’s redesigns were failures

That boss I mentioned earlier that I was having trouble with… I just went back to fight him. Whupped his ass this time. Got Crystarium expanded to level 9 and 100K in CP as a reward. Yay me!
Some non-spoiler tips
You fight this guy once before, so this is the second time you have to fight him. He has like 3mil HP this time.
You shouldn’t fight him unless you have the 3 core roles for your characters maxed out in the crystarium.
Don’t even bother with teh Sentiel role in this battle. It is worthless.

I’m just about to rescue Vanille and Sazh from the airship. I think I’m getting really close to the open area. I haven’t leved up any items or weapons yet. I want to check out a guide before I start using pieces.
From what I gather, each character has 7 weapons. all level up to max out and create a super weapon. Then the Super weapon gets leveled up to create the ultimate weapon. So I guess it doesn’t matter which weapons I upgrade?
Also I want to try and get the Hermes shoes… haven’t read up on them too much yet. Hope I didn’t miss anything I needed.

Have fun with the boss. Half a mil HP… so much fun. First time in the game they allow you to pick your own party and you fight him lmao.
Sazh is the first person to get Haste and he became a corner stone of my group. Plus I just kinda like him as a character. That chocobo chick is cute.
My team throughout all Pulse so far has been Lightning, Sazh, and Fang.
Upgrading the weapons isn’t too hard. There is only 7 Weps for each character and each does upgrade to a second form, but all upgrade to Ultimate weapon form that also grants a 6th ATB bar.
Getting the “Super” wepaon is easy. But getting the Ultimate takes several pieces of rare and expensive materials.
I use the cheap “Iron shells” available from creature comforts to quickly get the weapon i want to Bonus x3 then start using the stufff that gives you the big XP amounts and you will have your weapons upgraded in no time.

Oh for sure! I remember them trying to charge for transfer kits when the larger drives came out, but a plethora of complaints made it free. Perhaps the same thing might happen here.

The next firmware update for the 360 is rumoured to support USB sticks for game installs, downloads etc (http://news.cnet.com/8301-27076_3-20000712-248.html)
One conclusion to this move is that it would allow game publishers to release 360 games on USB or a combo of USB and DVD to overcome the size limitations people are complaining about.

Not really. You may not remember because you are so young, but it has been done before. Sony has only lasted 15 years and 3 gens compared to Nintendo’s 27 years and 5 gens. They are still relatively young in the industry compared to Nintendo (smaller/more efficient redesigns of NES, SNES, N64), and have yet to outlast even Sega (smaller/more efficient redesigns of SG-1000, Master System, Genesis), who was in the VGI for 5 gens and 19 years. Sony PS3, while still last (or 3rd in total sales) overall this gen, is also able to succeed as well as it is because there is no fourth or even fifth competitor as there sometimes has been in the past.

Not really. They (Sega and Nintendo) made it a trend three generations in a row, and each one was successful enough to merit a redesign. Sony’s is only the most recent trend.

I still only recall the one Sega redesign. Did the other console redesigns change the way they looked? Or was it an internal redesign. I straight up have no recollection of either the NES or SNES getting redesigned. And the different look of the Famicom and Super Famicom don’t count as redesigns.
If there was a redesign of either the N64 or the gamecube…again….Don’t recall that.
Aside from Sega with the new genesis, Sony is the first company I recall making a redesign popular.
And I still think they should trademark the slim name for consoles.

most of sega redesigns were failures lol..Sega has had only one sucessful console…the Sega Genesis all the other ones were “gamecube – Xbox” types of consoles

Yes phranc, it’s going way back and likely before roca was born; plus some are not well advertised nor were some available in North America (the videogame market was several magnitudes so therefore he considers them “failures”, even though they did sell well enough for their relative time and respective markets, which was a fraction of size compared to what it is today. The other console redesigns changed the way they looked from the outside as well as redesigning the inside.
The SG-1000 was redesigned to the SG-1000 II and a computer version called the SC-3000, which went on to outsell the 1000.
Then there was the Sega Mark III, which was redesigned as the Sega Master System, which outsold the Mark III. The Sega Game Gear was effectively a handheld Master System with minor enhancements, and only needed an adapter to fit the Master System Cartridges.
The Master System itself was backwards compatible with the SG-1000 cartridges and cards. The master system wasn’t as successful as it could be in North America due to Nintendo’s 80%+ dominance in the market, let alone it’s third party title restrictions (which they were later forced to abandon by law).
But the Master System was also redesigned to the Sega Master System II. The Master System itself was very successful in Europe. The Sega Master System II was later redesigned into the Sega Master System III and the Sega Master System Compact.
The Master System is still being produced in Brazil (Master System III). It comes with 131 games built in. 25 years after it’s original release. The SG-1000 and the Master System laid the foundation for the Genesis’ success.

As for the NES, the original (10″ width by 8″ length by 3.5″ height) was redesigned inside and out, also being made much smaller, to the NES 101 (6″ by 7″ by 1.5″), more commonly known as the “top loader”. It was highly popular and successful for it’s time.
The SNES was later redesigned to the SNS-101 model, which was also both slimmer and lighter.
While N64′s appearance did not change, it’s insides did, including the DAC chip in early models.

Surprised no one remembers the redesignes of the NES, SNES, and especially the Sega Genesis.
The Sega genesis redesign was very popular.
I was gonna post links to pics of each SG model but I found one awsome pic with 1,2 and 3 revisions in it.

Yes, they didn’t get as much exposure, but the NES/SNES redesigns were every bit as successful, if not more so.
