Playstation Move meets Minority Report

March 21, 2010

Playstation Move meets Minority Report Sony recently provided a tech demo of the Playstation Move, showing some interesting applications for the motion controllers. The demo has been dubbed by others as the “Minority Report.”

Engadget was able to capture part of the tech demo of the Playstation Move in-front of live journalists and developers. The demonstration showcased the Playstation Move’s capability to create and bend 3D objects in real-time.

There seems to be this uncanny sense of 1:1 interaction with the virtual world inside the screen and the objects that are created within it. As stated in the demo, the Playstation Move is more like a 3D mouse.

Check out the demonstration:

The application of the technology looks promising and interesting. I can see this being used for computing in the living room. However, I still can’t wrap my head around how this can be applied to hardcore gaming. I suppose I will need to see a Heavy Rain caliber implementation to be sold on it.

    Holy Minority!
Isn’t this supposed to be what Project Fatal was intended to do?
All they needed was to play some classical music!

  2. harry sachz:

I just watched the first minute of this and can see that this is not 1:1. You can see the slightest delay when the guy moves his hands as opposed to the screens.

I recall a few days ago that Digital Foundry brought a 60fps camera to a Move tech demo and confirmed this. Surprised it wasn’t reported on here.

I saw Minority Report a few years ago, I don’t remember seeing Tom Cruise using a wand type of device to search etc.

  3. Ivan_PSP:

PlayStation Move is already a massive success.

  4. Sorral:

    @Harry,
He said he wrote the programming just last night of the presentation time. I wouldn’t really nitpick on that. lol

And 60fps, because so many games use that 100% of the time on consoles, amirite?

It is probably more precise than a regular console controller, so that alone is a good improvement as it is.

No hands on here yet, and I am still not sold on it because I have the PSeye and didn’t like it much(so no natal for me) too casual and wanted what they call in the future “Buttons!”

Metriod on the Wii, I went looking for a GC controller after trying motion controller with it. I gotta try the Move with a hardcore game first.

  5. Sorral:

    program* meh grammar

  6. b0xel:

sutle down guys, I know hardcore gamers aren’t really interseted in motion controls. specialy with the crap nintendo’s producing.{i know I am}.
but you know what, I have faith in sony. if anyone can make motion gaming, hardcore-gamer friendly . its them.
I my self will be pickin up a move.Sony deserves our support.

  7. CarlB:

“Surprised it wasn’t reported on here.”

Really? I mean REALLY Harry??? lol.

“I don’t remember seeing Tom Cruise using a wand type of device to search etc.”

No, I don’t recall him using two light up dildo’s either, haha.

Did you notice how FAR he was standing away from it?

I was also “surprised” this was really expounded upon in the coverage of Natal here but not Move.

They didn’t mention Minority Report in the vid, but the did say:
“Yeah Apples going to sue you”
“This is like the next gen of Mist” (followed by laughter and jeers from the audience).
“Why is it so blurred out?”
    “… Ummm… that’s a light issue”
    “… OH…”

Resizing windows and a camera app…
“This is your game right here… this is your killer app… haha”

  8. Ivan_PSP:

    CarlB:
Your so bitter and jealous is not even funny. Just cause NATAL sucks you don’t have to take it on the PlayStation Move. Blame Microsoft for having idiots as staff members.

Sounds like mouse/kb vs controller, which is what I want. Especially with how you don’t have to ‘flail’ your arms while playing socom.

@B0xel I know what you mean and hopefully they get it right.

  10. RomasantaMC:

    @ivan
carls right this is in my opinion an app I will probably never use.

    @Sorral
thanx man for the link, this is actually what I was hoping the Move would turn out to be(a substitute for a mouse)

  11. CarlB:

Neither one exists yet Ivan. Everything up until they actually have products on the market is nothing but PR and hype, if not vaporware.

  12. Ivan_PSP:

I won’t ever play SOCOM 4 with PlayStation Move duh.

Well I’m buying both either way. I like how Sony is always showing playable demos and a lot of cool games and Microsoft they show mostly just videos of what they wanna to be. Plus no controller is not a good idea. The no controller idea i like but just for racing games and sports games. It will be cool trying to catch the ball while p,laying Madden NFL 2011. I just think that Sony has more potential. Now both companies are after Nintendo succeeds. But Sony is also after making good games all i see Microsoft doing is crappy games for the money like when they rush the Xbox 360. Microsoft better not price that shit to $150.

  13. gunstar:

did you guys see that robot like 3D image with fully articulated fingers? isn’t that full body motion capture? All the PS3 Move controller needed was an analog nub like in the PSP and he could have moved in all directions while jumping up and down. I hope they will put the analog nub in the final product.

  14. gunstar:

    @ Ivan
yeah its only a matter of few months before the holidays and I havent seen any real time tech demo from Project Fatal except that almost a year old Ricomambo demo… and now they are talking crap about a mandatory 10 to 12 square feet of open space in order to play Project Fatal … most ridiculous video gaming requirement ever in history!

  15. Liquid:

these nuts in yo mouth. . . .BITCH!

  16. Ivan_PSP:

    gunstar:
Yeah i know is pathetic. Microsoft doesn’t even let people play publicly different games all they got is tech videos. PlayStation Move looks way more promising. I would still buy both but i gotta feeling i will enjoy PlayStation %90 more for sure. Sony has never disappointed me ever. And this new measurements needed to use NATAL is pretty lame and should be something that Sony can use to their advantage in their ads. NATAL in my book is a failure.

  17. Roca.:

    CarlB sounds jealous LOL

  21. jojo29:

    Heres my take:

As i’ve stated before, i’m not a strong supporter for EITHER motion control schemes. I prefer my controller, but if companies really wanted to inovate, they would always allow m/kb support in most FPS and whichever games would work with it, i would go for that.

As far as Natal and Move are concerned, heres my 2cents:

Move: I like this one a little bit more for 2 reasons: 1) The almost 1:1 Ratio, and 2) Yes, it still has buttons. BUT, in all honesty, this is just an improved and superior version of the Wiimote…judging by what they have shown as so far, so can’t really say till its actually released.

Natal: I REALLY like how they displayed how you interact with the Xbox Dashboard menus, this is MORE like Minority Report to me, in fact its the ONE cool feature that i could and would find myself using Natal for, menu browsing. In this respects, i give the “most innovative” “award” to Natal.

This is all really pointless TO ME, frankly because like i stated, I prefer my controllers or m/kb over motion controls.

To summarize, and remember, this is ONLY going by what BOTH companies have been showing:

The Innovation i would have to give it up for Natal, i mean i really dig how you would navigate the menus.

The Functionality i would definitely give it up to Move, you just can’t beat 1:1 interaction ratio

For Most Useless Feature I Would Never Use But Like The Option Of Using It If I Wanted To: both Move and Natal lol

  22. b0xel:

“The Innovation i would have to give it up for Natal”
    cmon,man. inovation?
so in that sense, MS’s latest “inovation” is something sony came up with 8 years ago (EyeToy)
maybe in another 8 years they could come up with a console called “ps3″ and change its name to Xbox720,
    :) I’m just saying ..

  23. Roca.:

    @bOxel and jojo

Yeah, im just saying B0xel, im NOT a fan of EITHER, but i do think it is rather “innovative” of Natal to allow you to control the UI directly through the motion control, thats all..

Again, i don’t either solution, but in terms of “hey thats pretty neat” i give it to Natal.

Now in terms of “hey that works great” i give it to Move

I can’t believe it….My fucken quack load PS3 died this morning…..Out of ALL people my PS3 had to fall down DEAD!

I am soooooo pissed right now. Thankfully I ejected GTA 4 before it happened. Now I’m forced to play the dreaded Xbox 360 until I get it fixed.

I love Sony but there’s no fucken way in hell I’m paying $150 to get it fixed. I guarantee Lady Gaga’s ass on that.

….3 years…..3 months….and the fucker died on me. Bull shit! And it’s an original 60gb full backward compatibility :-(

I tried taking out the harddrive…I used the dust remover….I turned my console on one thousand times…..still nothing.

The green light turns on for about 2 seconds and then I hear a click sound on the harddrive, and then the yellow light appears and shuts off. AFter that the red light keeps flashing.

Am I in hell or what??? Pleeease somebody help me! I need my PS3 :-(

  29. The Future of Sega:

I paid 600 and fucken 42 bucks, 37 cents and it all comes down to this…..It was the last 60gb PS3 in stock at Gamestop….a masterpiece…..it was destiny….all for me……and now it’s all gone. FUUUUUUUUCK!!!!!!!!!

damn i tought the first post wasn’t sent
    oh well

  33. Ivan_PSP:

I believe you can fix the Blu-ray Drive by opening the PS3 correctly and cleaning everything or by adding a new Blu-ray Disc drive or a working used one. I also believed you can fix the YLOD by place a new motherboard which cost about $70 to $80 on eBay or also for like $30 more you can get a PS3 for parts or with minor problems. If my PS3 dies i will try to fix it myself and i will use a guide for it from SCEA.COM forum they got good ones. I will just buy the all the necessary equipment to open the PS3 console. Once i follow the step correctly as given i will save a lot of money.

And 60fps, because so many games use that 100% of the time on consoles, amirite?”

I am not nit picking on just this particular demo. Even to the naked eye, you can see that there is a bit of a lag and is not 1:1. The same with that sword game thing that DF were doing their tests on.

    @ carlb,

haha well no, not surprised. It was a backhanded comment at best!

  38. harry sachz:

    He’s not army…..

  39. Sorral:

@Harry: Congrats on having that finally guy quit.

Regarding the lag, I still say should cut them some slack as all of those are still in development and Zipper was doing great with the Move on Socom4 in very short time.
Many people need to see a little further than what shows up in the front. At least, they are willing to show everything in real time unlike MS/PN.

    @RomasantaMC
No problem. It is what I would like to happen too, a substitute for a mouse.

  40. ncaissie:

    “He’s not army…..” What ever!

I find it funny that the guy said the wrote the code the day before, and since Sony stated that only 2-3MB is need to run Move games vs 15%-30% CPU needed from the 360 to run Natal games…so once again I think Sony has the upper hand on this one

  52. Rhino:

I traded my old YLoD 40GB + some birthday vouchers and some games I don’t play anymore for a 250GB + GoW3 + FIFA 10 + HDMI cable @ EB Games here in Brisbane.

  54. Ivan_PSP:

    Roca.:
Damn well is obvious the most powerful computer in the world is based on the Cell processor that’s on the heart of the PLAYSTATION 3 console. But wow that’s basically nothing so i imagine developers having a lot of processing power to make what ever they need. And yeah the Xbox 360 uses a lot of processing power and that might also be because the console is weaker then the PS3 and is made different also. Project Natal is a huge ambitious gamble being rush for this fall to fall.

Microsoft is trying to difference themselves from Wii Mote and PlayStation Move. But it looks like is a huge risk so far is falling a apart.

    Rhino:
Since your Xbox 360 console is collecting dust you might as well sell it or get it flashed so you can have games free and it will be useful for once i guess.

  55. ncaissie:

“hey ncaissie, did you complete the challenge of olympus yet?”

not yet. I’m putting 3 aside and going back to finish one. I was getting frustrated with the challenge in the first one lol.

  56. RomasantaMC:

    @roca
I think that article is misleading. Yes the ps3 is powerful but against any “gaming” or modern Pc you might get 50% and I think that might be pushing it.

  57. Ivan_PSP:

    RomasantaMC:
I don’t know why people think the PC gaming are so advance. Because they are far from that. Console trumps PC any day. There’s PC exclusive that cannot be done on PS3 ten times better. And that’s a fact my friend.

  58. The Future of Sega:

Boxel and Ncaisse, thanks. Although Ncaisse I’m still a little tick off by your previous comments but thanks anyways.

Ok…just downloaded the manual….I hope you didn’t upload a worm or virus in it. That would SERIOUSLY piss me off!…checking….checking….So will I retain all of my data once these methods are applied?

….If not then I might as well join the ranks of the dead :-( lol.

  59. ncaissie:

    it doesn’t hurt your data.
It basically gets you to reheat the solder on the motherboard to reconnect broken connections.
You will have to buy a heat gun and new heat sync paste.

  60. The Future of Sega:

Ok I just read the whole thing. The heat gun sounds good but I’m afraid that I’ll screw it up lol. 2 years ago before Dual Shock 3 was released, I attempted to insert xbox rumble motors into my sixaxis controllers to make them rumble.

At the time only 5 PS3 games were rumble compatible but I did just for the heck of it. But that’s another story…..

  61. RomasantaMC:

    @Fos
    worm free.
Avg, mcafee, avira, and panda say no.

    @Ivan
I know the ps3 is a beast (folding home/GOW3), But when it comes to pure raw power pc will beat out ps3. I only think that article is misleading because it doesn’t really give the scope of the PCs its comparing.

  62. The Future of Sega:

So Ncaisse, does the 40gb PS3 have the same motherboard as the original 60gb? I heard that newer PS3 models run at 45nm. Is there a way that i can add that to my original 60gb PS3….without gawking over my savings to sony lol? :-)

  63. The Future of Sega:

Oh by the way what is the best anti virus/spam/worm/internet protection/etc. program to use? I used to have Norton but then I switched to Kaspersky. And now I’m having trouble downloading updates from microsoft.

    DAMN YOU VISTA!!!! ;-)

  64. RomasantaMC:

    @Fos-a bit off topic
use avira free version as primary(never had a prob with it on vista),
paid version mcafee secondary(sometimes refuses to download torrents).
Avast has a 1 month free version that is one of the best but I don’t buy antivirus anymore and constantly downloading is a bitch.
I’ve never liked norton, and if you believe that one of the above isn’t finding the virus use the free online scan of panda antivirus.

  65. ncaissie:

“Ok I just read the whole thing. The heat gun sounds good but I’m afraid that I’ll screw it up lol.”
better to try and screw it up then not try and toss it out. it may be easier then you think.

  66. Roca.:

    @Roma,
Yeah I know PS3 doesnt stand a chance against gaming PCs, but as powerful as those PC are, they still done get games like GoW3, Uncharted 2, Gran Turismo, etc…all they get is MMOs and RTSs (and some of them suck)

  67. ncaissie:

“So Ncaisse, does the 40gb PS3 have the same motherboard as the original 60gb?”

    not sure.
I have a 40 and 80 and the back HDMI plugs are in different spots.

  68. RomasantaMC:

    @roca
Not a fan of MMOs, as far as RTSs lovem. Not many pc titles currently interest me(kind of like xbox’s line up). I’m not gonna disagree that currently Ps3 is where my gaming is at. I’m not gonna disagree that currently Ps3 is where my gaming is at. And those exclusives are why my ps3 gets way more play time than my xbox or my pc.

  69. Sorral:

They took out the PS2 hardware in the later 80GB/40GB models, unless you’re talking about the 80GB with partial PS2 emulation(MGS4 bundle, and 60GB in EU), which still had a different motherboard because of taking out the EE cpu. Unless you guys are talking about something else.

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_PlayStation_3_SKUs

Got 100% on GoW3 Friday night/Saturday’s morning. Loved every bit of the game, trying to get the challenge of exile arena code in the UE bundle to work, because a few letters got misprinted. -_-
My PSN ID is the same as my name here.

  70. Sorral:

By the way, Tom c. in Minority Report had gloves with LEDs on the tips of his fingers. It is not far off from how the Move works with the light bulbs.

  71. gunstar:

    @ Sorral
    great point there…

    I wonder why M$ didn’t notice that?

Anyways Cruise’s gloves would have been equivalent to 10 PS Move controllers which is far too expensive at this time but given a few more years I am sure Sony can make that affordable ^^

So I think it is the PSMove ‘moving’ in that direction

Makes me think why the hell Spielberg was the guest on Project Fatal demo last E3 2009

M$ wasted millions on celebrity endorsements but not on making games * scratches head

M$ will never ever be a gaming company in my book

  72. gunstar:

The one big problem I see with Sony CEI nowadays

is that they lost their edge,

They are not avant garde any more,

They play it too safe to the point of being conservative and traditional,

I don’t like their wait and see attitude for a giant gaming company.

    What are they afraid of?

They regret not publishing Demon’s Soul here in the West.

They ‘moved’ in very late with PSEye and PS3Move

Nintendo was very aggressive as the Wii was their last chance at home console. Ninty played it safe too with a cheap console but they were smart not to go head to head with Sony and looked for other prey.

Well I hope Sony wise up, learn their lessons well, and pull themselves together this time.

Its hard to imagine what could have happened if the industry is left in the hands of Nintendo and M$ only?

I went see Red Ring consoles all over New York’s video game section in GameStop there’s always a dead one at best buy i saw one too in TARGET i saw there too when i used to work there. Costco there too everywhere. That’s why you see so many PS3 being sold people are selling there Xbox 360 to new victims while they go buy a PS3 instead.

  76. b0xel:

“Ok I just read the whole thing. The heat gun sounds good but I’m afraid that I’ll screw it up lol.”

OUCH, that kinda hurts man. What? no trust among the blorge brethrens?

  77. phranctoast:

I will admit that the conditions suck for the 360 at a lot of those places. Bad ventilation, and on for too long, but it is funny to see them dead.

Digital Foundry ended up issuing an update to their story. Basically saying that variables exist that makes the test have too much error until they have a unit to setup to their calibrated equipment.

  89. phranctoast:

I would have lost $20 of promotions by the end of the month, so it paid to do it then. I’m still angry at myself for not picking up Bayonetta when it was 49.99 and Darksiders when that was $39.99.

  90. Roca.:

$39.99 for Darksiders darksider was a pretty good deal. I didnt like the Bayonetta demo at all though

  91. Ivan_PSP:

    Roca.:
The DarkSider demo sucked the whole game sucks. I was looking forward to that game until i play it. Also Bayonetta sucks too.

    Who’s next?

  92. phranctoast:

I wasn’t that impressed with the Bayonetta Demo but a lot of times that really isn’t the best indication of the final game.

Darksiders demo was great. It was too slow in the beginning but picked up a great deal more.

  93. Ivan_PSP:

    phranctoast:
Oh well anyone that doesn’t care to get mediocre at best or below average is their money.

I will stick to buying PS3 exclusives they never fail. LBP and LAIR don’t count LoL.

I get multiplatform on Xbox 360 free the only reason.

  94. ncaissie:

” I’m still angry at myself for not picking up Bayonetta when it was 49.99 and Darksiders when that was $39.99.”
    Bayonetta demo sucked large.

  95. ncaissie:

    I wouldn’t pay $5 for it.

  96. Roca.:

    “Bayonetta demo sucked large”

LMAOO, ncaissie was done with it after the first fight

  97. ncaissie:

“I wasn’t that impressed with the Bayonetta Demo but a lot of times that really isn’t the best indication of the final game.”
But the fighting sucked and I don’t think there would be much change in that.
This game looks aimed at horny 11 year olds and virgins like Ivan.

  98. ncaissie:

“LMAOO, ncaissie was done with it after the first fight”
The middle of the fight LOL

  99. ncaissie:

I have to say the graphics are very poor. Her face looked ok but the rest of the game looked like crap, even her body. It looks odd.

  100. Roca.:

I have said this many times, GoW Collection looks better than Bayonetta

  101. ncaissie:

    I agree Roca.

  102. phranctoast:

    I’ve said the same thing.

  103. Liquid:

ahem. . . .eh. . . .hi there. . . .i have this uh problem see. . . .and eh. . i somehow managed to get. . . .uh my hand caught in the outer part of my eh. . . . eh. . . .anus, you guys eh. . .know any good lube brands? uh thanks. . . ow

  104. Ivan_PSP:

    BORING DAY

  105. b0xel:

    “BORING DAY”
No shit, Cant wait till E3. thats when things gets interseting. –”

  106. Ivan_PSP:

    b0xel:
I’m waiting for E3 too. I hope Microsoft announces that they are quitting the entire video game business and i hope Nintendo decides to join the big boy.

  107. Liquid:

i really wish nintendo made a proper console again. cant wait to see what sony have up their sleeve for E3.

i Love you Sony. . . and yes i will gag if you ask me too

  108. Barnabe Jones:

I wasn’t very impressed with the demos for Bayonetta or Darksiders. Neither was horrible, but they just felt like mediocre games.

E3 should be great this year. I’m betting we will get release dates for GT5, The Last Guardian, and Final Fantasy XIV.

We’ll probably see KillZone3, Twisted Metal, Star Hawk, Resistance 3, Final Fantasy 13 VS, and who knows what else.

  109. CAD:

“I recall a few days ago that Digital Foundry brought a 60fps camera to a Move tech demo and confirmed this. Surprised it wasn’t reported on here.”

Harry does it really surprise you that Blorge would write such negative comments about the PS3. Mike is a PS3 Fanboy that would be against his religion.

  110. CAD:

By the way I saw the delay too.

  111. CAD:

“I can’t believe it….My fucken quack load PS3 died this morning…..Out of ALL people my PS3 had to fall down DEAD!”

“I love Sony but there’s no fucken way in hell I’m paying $150 to get it fixed. I guarantee Lady Gaga’s ass on that.”

Well there’s another one. Too bad Sony won’t fix it for free.

  112. ghinasky:

I will try my new name…

  113. phranctoast:

Neither would have MS you ass. It was older than three years.

  114. phranctoast:

And I know you only like to selectively see some comments CAD but that digital foundry test has been reported to be flawed.

  115. CarlB:

“Neither would have MS you ass. It was older than three years.”

Actually, they fixed Harry’s outside of 3 years. Sorry.

  116. Roca.:

“Actually, they fixed Harry’s outside of 3 years. Sorry”

oh really? that doesnt mean anything, he got lucky, thats it….there probably many PS3 owner who have gotten lucky too and their system was repaired out of warranty

  117. phranctoast:

I love it when the exception becomes the rule.

  118. ncaissie:

“Actually, they fixed Harry’s outside of 3 years. Sorry.”
    I still don’t believe it.

  119. ncaissie:

“I love it when the exception becomes the rule.”

LOL but if one of the Pbots said something he would be the first to shoot it down.

  120. phranctoast:

Someone I know got a TV replaced by Sony and only paid shipping cost. The TV was also out of warranty. Again…Exceptions don’t equate to the rule.

  121. Roca.:

this is another stupid argument! and the funny thing is that they actually believed MS is fixing every single out-of-warranty 360 for free. LOL

  122. ncaissie:

I hate having to pay shipping in warranty.
I had to ship my Gateway game pc back and they made me pay shipping. They fixed the problem and not the cause so I had to ship it back the next day. When to many USB or SATA drives are plugged in the PC freezes and doesn’t boot. Then the main HDD died.
The second time they pay to ship it but still pisses me off. The same with Seagate Drives, you pay shipping. Nintendo and HP always pays the shipping.

  123. ncaissie:

“this is another stupid argument! and the funny thing is that they actually believed MS is fixing every single out-of-warranty 360 for free. LOL”

LOL I have an optical mouse that died a couple years ago maybe MS will replace it!

  124. CarlB:

That they did for one of the users here seems fairly decent. “NO, STOP! Don’t replace it for free! You don’t do it for everybody! …LOL”

  125. phranctoast:

    @CAD/CarlB

Yeah.. So to end this ridiculousness. MS would also not have replaced the console for free if it RROD outside of warranty. Sorry

  126. CAD:

No matter how many time we have told our stories about how Microsoft Fixed our 360 out of warrenty they still won`t believe us. It`s not like we conspire behind closed doors like you guy have done so many times before. Canada, Australia, USA, India and the UK and the story is the same. Go ahead don`t believe us because it`s not like we`re paying $150 to get our 360`s fixed. Sucks to be a PS3rd

  127. CarlB:

Yeah.. So to end this ridiculousness. Microsoft replaces consoles for free out of warranty. Maybe not every one, but some. Sorry to burst your bubble.

  128. phranctoast:

Was your replaced for free? It was out of warranty correct?

  129. ncaissie:

“$150 to get our 360`s fixed. Sucks to be a PS3rd”
LOL anyone can fix the RRoD or YRoD on their own if they have an ounce of talent.

  130. ncaissie:

The major point (which you guys seem to ignore) is there are a lot more RRoD’s then there are YRoD (or whatever you call them) so MS has a LOT more ASS kissing to do. Why not replace a few and let the word spread online? If it was my business I sure would. If you retards want to think MS is doing it out of kindness that’s fine. We all know better.

  131. phranctoast:

I guess I should just expect not to hear back from you huh Carl?

  132. phranctoast:

My buddy Dave at work. The guy with the broken 360, said he could get it repaired from MS for $120. They wouldn’t repair it for free for some strange reason being that its older than 3 years. It could possibly be that it was because it wasn’t the first time (who knows)

He’s opting to pay an extra $80 for an arcade instead of a refurbished system that will just break again. With the new system at least it refreshes that 3 year warranty once again.
I failed to ask him so I’ll ask you guys. If he was to pay the $120 for the repair would MS extend the warranty any more?
