Hands-On: Xbox 360 Game Room unleashed today

March 25, 2010

Hands-On: Xbox 360 Game Room unleashed today Microsoft dropped the Game Room application today onto Xbox Live. The service allows you to build your arcade room with retro games from back in the day.

The service experienced some issues earlier today when a glitch prevented users from downloading and actually playing the games inside Game Room. However, it seems like Microsoft has rectified the issue currently.

After taking a brief tour of Game Room, I have to admit there are some interesting features within it. As announced, a single play will cost you 50 cents each time and to buy it for either the Xbox 360 or PC will cost $3. If you want to buy it for the PC and Xbox 360 it will cost $5 for both platforms.

You will get to demo each game one time before buying it. However, you won’t get to see how the arcade cabinet will look like in your Game Room until you have purchased it. Buying more games and playing them will unlock items and decorations similar to Playstation Home’s arcades.

You can get items such as a couch for the Game Room, albeit useless as you can’t sit on it or even walk over to it because you can’t control your avatar. Every game you buy have a feature called time warp, which allows you to rewind the game in case you die. Didn’t Nintendo patent this feature?

Currently there are about 30 arcade games that can be purchased. Game Room does feature an interesting leveling system. The more games you play the more points you accumulate, which allow you to get medals and these medals can help you get achievements.

There is also a showcase room where you can see friends trying out different games using tokens (not money). You start out with 20 tokens, but you can also earn them by doing various things. The showcase room features a select number of games that can be played. Game Room is a neat feature new to Xbox Live and I recommend everyone to check it out.

    PlayStation Home?

  2. Barnabe Jones:

    Oh wait, no. The games in Home are free. lol $3. Nice.

  3. CAD:

    Yeah and you also have to wait for it to become free when someone is already using it. LOL

    I`ll try it when I get home. Currently on Vacation.

  4. harry sachz:

    Yeah but the games in Home (the Australian Home anyway) are not officially licensed games. That would partly explain the fee.

  5. RomasantaMC:

    Yes Mike because usability of the couch is what counts.

  6. harry sachz:

    hah roma

  7. Liquid:

    yeah did you guys hear gameroom is already broken? its gets stuck on the loading bar. . .its all over the internet! haha so shut it CAD

  8. FahKinSuPah:

    I checked this out yesterday myself…

    I have to say that I was pleasently surprised to see some old Atari favs of mine like Adventure, Yars Revenge and Combat there… Warlords would have been nice lol.

    Adventure might be interesting for RPG enthusiasts to see lol

    I grew up with an Atari 2600 so this is some nice nostalgia to me…

    But of course I still own my Atari 2600 and like 30 games for it lol, so why would I need to buy any of these games?

    One game we probably will never see here is E.T. lmao

  9. phranctoast:

    Thank god.

    That and Superman.. haha

    “The service experienced some issues earlier today when a glitch prevented users from downloading and actually playing the games inside Game Room.”

    Oh, No, Not MS! They don’t have glitches. Only Sony has glitches in their software!

  11. Rhino:

    Another way for MS to squeeze money which you already to pay to play online.

  12. b0xel:

    damn, MS sure loves money.greedy bastards.
    yet, they don’t even use the money to improve their shit.{ it goes to the ” money taken out of retards ” bank acount in switzerland. ha ha.

  13. phranctoast:

    50 Cents a single play through? I really doubt they have Dragons Lair/Space Ace there!!!!

    The Xbot mating call….

    Squeeeeeeeeeeeel!!! Squeeeeeeeeeeel!

  14. RomasantaMC:

    @phranc
    A deliverance quote?

    So are most of the games oldschool Atari are there a pretty good mix of retro atari and oldschool arcade such as fighters and such.

  15. ncaissie:

    CAD, you and Carl must really have a sore sphincter by now!

  16. ncaissie:

    LMFAO
    I just heard on the news to idiots call the bank and told them to get a bag of money ready. Then 20 minutes later showed up to rob the bank! Hahahahahahaha Cops grabbed them in the parking lot. A 16 and 20 year old! Man they must have proud parents!
    CAD are they related to you?

  17. Roca.:

    CarlB and CAD must be spending their “virtual” money to play on those virtual arcades.

    im surprise MS is actually charging for this, but I bet 360 will spend their money on it because they dont get enough good retail games

  18. phranctoast:

    @Roma

    Thats what its derived from, yeah.

  19. Roca.:

    where is CON?
    he was thinking about getting a PS3 since his 360 died….
    He probably got a PS3 already and he has been playing nonstop, that’s why we haven’t seen much of him lately

  20. phranctoast:

    probably.

    or OS found him…

  21. Roca.:

    LoL @ Phranc

    soo…how many trophies do you need for platinum in GoW3?

  22. phranctoast:

    lets see…

    -Beat Titan Mode-Gold
    -Challenge of Olympus-Gold
    -Godly Possessions-Gold (have 8/10)missing Hercules and eagle
    -Power up all weapons-Silver (I was so close)
    -Find all feather-Silver (off by maybe two)
    -Find all Gorgon eyes-silver (off by maybe two as well)
    -1000 hot combo-bronze
    -Blind 100 enemies-bronze
    -kick 50 dogs-bronze

    I started on Titan mode and had trouble on the damn water horse. Not sure how I’ll hold up in that mode. I’ll get the eagle at Gais heart there though and the same with Hercules. I found out that you can go back to old saved games to get godly possessions and that’s fine. It sticks…
    I’ll probably refer back to my save game from before for the blind and kick dogs. I just don’t recall seeing that many dogs..throughout the whole game. Theres a few in hades and some at a part near hermes. I’ll see if it lets me add that one up.

  23. phranctoast:

    I beat Assassins Creed 2 last night aside from getting Hades mask, Helios Shield, and Hermes Coin (all things I forgot to do before) in GOW3.

    I’m very close to platinuming AC2. I have some easy bronze to do and a couple of difficult things (feathers, and subject 16 video log)

    Overall…yesterday was a productive day.

  24. RomasantaMC:

    @phranc
    before the princess there is an unlimited spawn of the hounds. area with spikes filled with water. Got all of your needed bronze there.

  25. phranctoast:

    is that Posiedens Princess room?

  26. phranctoast:

    I was so close to maxing out everything. I needed maybe 3000 orbs for the final lightning whip level. I figured I would have earned it fighting Zeus, but I got nothing at all from that fight. Kind of lame…

  27. Roca.:

    the only two difficult ones are Titan mode and Challenge of Olympus

  28. phranctoast:

    I can’t see how I’m going to beat Titan mode. You basically can’t make any mistakes or you’re screwed.

  29. RomasantaMC:

    @phranc
    yeah its just before the poseidons princess room. As for orbs I found this easy as long as I collected all chests along the way(you get alot of orbs for getting extra eyes,feathers,horns)I got it on titan mode. when it comes down to titan mode its all about dodging with trial and error.

    @Roca
    you didn’t think 1000hit wasn’t hard?

  30. Roca.:

    Roma – “you didn’t think 1000hit wasn’t hard?”

    if you try to do it on Titan mode yes.
    it is just time consuming…but it can be done on easy mode with no problem

  31. Roca.:

    “I can’t see how I’m going to beat Titan mode. You basically can’t make any mistakes or you’re screwed”

    the fucked up thing about it is that every time you die you no longer gain a bit more health like in previous GoW games…so you have to know how to manage your health bear and green orbs chest during your playthrough. sometimes its better not to open some of them as you will be back in that area later on

  32. phranctoast:

    Ok.. I have that room saved as one of my save locations. hopefully I can back track. I’m guessing since its a spawn screwup that it wont happen again….

  33. phranctoast:

    Thats a good idea with the not using health unless you have to. I usually do that anyway but never go back because on normal I never had that hard of a time.

  34. Roca.:

    What I tried to say is, that you have to past multiple times through some areas. so lets say you left unopened 2 green orbs chest around the “3 Judges” area….the next time you have to go down there to break the chain and smash their heads, those chest will still be there.

  35. ncaissie:

    “-Power up all weapons-Silver (I was so close)’
    aren’t the trophies set already?
    Guess what I’m asking is can you get different levels (gold, silver, bronze) for any trophy?

  36. phranctoast:

    @ncaissie.

    No. Trophies have their value (bronze, silver and gold) and you can only get the preset value.

  37. Roca.:

    “aren’t the trophies set already?”

    correct

    “-Power up all weapons-Silver (I was so close)’

  40. phranctoast:

    where? In hades?

  41. phranctoast:

    I was close to getting the silver trophy for that one trophy. I’m pretty sure its a silver one, and not bronze.

  42. ncaissie:

    “I was close to getting the silver trophy for that one trophy. I’m pretty sure its a silver one, and not bronze.”

    “where? In hades?”
    I’ll have to look at home. There is a spot where you’re dragging a girl through a few rooms and you fight statues with big hammers.

  43. The Future of Sega:

    This is absolutely insane. Paying more money Microsoft?? Ha. I tell you what….instead….I’m going to give you the flipper :-)

    Trying being Macro for once M-I-C-R-O”soft”. :-)

  44. phranctoast:

    So Sega….

    You’re saying the company is like a flaccid small dick?

  45. Roca.:

    “where? In hades?”

    @Phranc
    it is right before the portal before you the room where Poseidon’s pricess is locked

  46. The Future of Sega:

    @ Phranctoast lol. Yeah that’s exactly what I’m syaing :-) lol. Wow I need to re-check my grammar. Geez I’m starting to sound like Ivan now lol just kididng.

    “where? In hades?”…No in North Korea. Of coarse Hades moron lol. But I’m just teasing. I have no intentions of going to that dreaded place. “I’m a little angel short and stout….here’s my halo and here’s my cock” ;-) LMFAO

  47. phranctoast:

    I already got into the nerd argument (nergument? I like it) All the dead go to hades. If your really good you go to Elysium and really bad you go to Tarterus.

  48. Barnabe Jones:

    @FahKinSuPah,

    You have the guide for FFXIII right? Can you give me some pointers about creating weapons? I’ve read a few things online, but I’m still a little confused.

  49. Barnabe Jones:

    …and I still have GoW3 sitting on the shelf. I’m getting close to the side missions in FF, depending on how much time they end up taking, I may take a week break to play through GoW.

  50. phranctoast:

    @Roca

    oh yeah.. btw.. I finally saw Ares frozen in the ice. I was in that room several times on different play throughs and never noticed him through the floor.

  51. Roca.:

    @Phranc,
    LoL, yeah I dont think alot of ppl have noticed it

  52. Sorral:

    I’m surprised that this many people are having problems (well, more like difficulties) with GoW3 trophies. I thought that they were easy for some reason. (100% since last Friday/Sat)

    In the room where ares was, do you guys not see the ‘flashing’ or…shining book in the room? <.< there is one in just about new every area you enter.

    As for the ontopic thing, Namco has been actually selling arcade(namco museum) in playstation home.

    Do publishers get money from the arcade units in this Xbox game room? Because if they don't get anything and it all goes to Microsoft, I can see a lot of them go to home and do what namco has been doing.

  53. phranctoast:

    @Sorral

    I suck at video games.

  54. Roca.:

    for those of you questioning which console has released more games!

    Nintendo:
    -NES = 794 (1,055 including Famicom games)
    -SNES = 785 (1442 including Super Famicom games)
    -N64 = 387
    -GC = 640
    -Wii = 1138 games as of March 2010

    Total: 3744 – 4662 games
    Nitendo has in the business for 5 generations

    Playstation:
    PS1 = 7,918 games
    PS2 = 4512 Games
    PS3 = 607 games

    Total: 13,037 games
    Playstation has only been in the industry for 3 generations

  55. Roca.:

    FahKin and Phranc might interested in those numbers, just in case there is a idiot saying otherwise ;)

  56. phranctoast:

    good look. Yeah..I’m sure that other topic has one foot in the grave, being that it’s on page two.

  57. Roca.:

    the PS2 alone can handle all 5 nintendo Generations but you know he hate “facts” LoL. its funny how he keeps arguing (like the Forzas vs GT5p sales) even though he is dead wrong

  58. Ultima:

    Lol this must be the worst idea, m$ has ever come up with… PAYING to play arcade games??? thats NONSENSE lol, I mean, COMMON!???!

  59. FahKinSuPah:

    @Barnabe

    Yeah man, i’d love to help out. I will post some shit here, that way maybe Roca and any other blorge regular can use some info too..

    Trust me when I say that the side missions are going to take you quite some time. I stopped for awhile, because the level requirements were getting ridiculas.

  60. FahKinSuPah:

    @Barnabe

    You already know about using organic components to raise your multiplyer value, then using the mechanical components to raise the level.

    The most efficient way of quickly raising the multiplyer value is probably to use Sturdy bone, Barbed tail, or Vibrant ooze. They only cost 80gil apiece and it takes 36 of either to reach the 3x bonus

    Another good choice would be to use Otherworly Bone, Diabolic tail, or Transparent Ooze. They cost 150gil apice and it takes 24 of either to each the same 3x bonus.

    Now for mechanical components.

    Component name > Avg EXP > Price
    ——————————–
    Ultracompact Reactor > 40k > 50K
    Supercharger > 774 > 1,600
    Particle Accelerator > 4,800 > 10K
    Turboprop > 768 > 1,600
    Superconductor > 400 > 840
    Perfect Conductor > 751 > 1,600
    Chobham Armor > 460 > 1,000
    Bomb Core > 551 > 1,200
    Tesla Turbine > 823 > 1,800

    Appearently each Weapon also has a hidden stat that determines the exact XP it will get from components, which is why the table above says AVG EXP.

    I usually just buy Superconductors and Perfect Conductors.

    That’s the basics.

    Each weapon has a specific level that it caps at before you have to upgrade. And that costs a specific component to upgrade as well.

    All Ultimate weapons require Trapezohedron, which is expensive.Ultimate weapons also provide a 6th ATB slot.

    Weapon form 1 > Weapon form 2
    Max level form 1 + Catalyst required to change to form 2 > Max level form 2
    Any abilities the weapon might have

    ——————————–

    Lightning

    All her weapons turn into Omega Weapon.

    Blazefire Saber > Flamberge
    26 + Perovskite > 61

    Axis Blade > Enkindler

    Atk: ATB charge I > ATB charge II

    Edged Carbine > Razor carbine

    Sazh

    All of Sazh’s guns become his Total Eclipses ultimate weapon.

  63. Rhino:

    @Sorral “As for the ontopic thing, Namco has been actually selling arcade(namco museum) in playstation home.”
    Yeah but PS Home is a free place. You don;t have to pay to play online, then pay again to play the games.

  64. ncaissie:

    “So Sega….

    You’re saying the company is like a flaccid small dick?”

    Which explains why the xbots don’t mind getting screwed by them.

  65. Barnabe Jones:

    FahKinSuPah,

    Wow thanks so much. I’m copying and pasting that into a Word Doc right now.

    I literally just made it to Gran Pulse. :)

  66. oldschool1987:

    God of War 3 platinum :) Number 20!

  67. The Future of Sega:

    I already got into the nerd argument (nergument? I like it) All the dead go to hades. If your really good you go to Elysium and really bad you go to Tarterus.

    LMAO @ nergument hahahahaha aaaah that just made my day :-) I needed a good laugh.

    ““So Sega….

    You’re saying the company is like a flaccid small dick?”

    Which explains why the xbots don’t mind getting screwed by them.”

    Lol. I can’t believe I downloaded that crap today. If I were Bill Gates I would fire everyone from the Xbox 360 department. They are RUINING Microsoft!! The first Xbox was highly exceptional. A little costly at its time but still exceptional.

    But this???? The 360 is an utter joke!….a joke that’s gone horribly wrong with no punchline intended ;-) lol.

    It’s like societal rejects wearing stray jackets are running the 360 department. Are the insane?? Xbox 360 should be banned from North America for high treason! lol they betrayed us all!!!!

    Sneaky little hobitses!!! They STOLE it from uussssss!! :-)

  68. FahKinSuPah:

    @Barnabe

    I enjoyed the Gran Pulse section of the game more than the the rest of the game. I wish Square would have skipped cocoon and based the game on Pulse entirely lol

  69. CarlB:

    Wow roca, I thought the discussion in that other topic was about “the greatest franchises of all time” not how many games a console had on it… lol.

  70. Roca.:

    it only shows that the PS2 alone can cover all 5 generations of Nintendo games and PS1 and PS3 added a more franchises.

    wow CarlB, I’m surprise you are still stuck on this and cant use common sense to figure out that there should be more franchises under 13,037 games vs 4662.

    thanks again for proving you are a joke when it comes to facts and admiting you were wrong. sometimes I wonder if you dont care to be wrong all the time just to doom Sony and Playstation.

  71. Barnabe Jones:

    FKSP,

    In all honesty I didn’t mind the linear structure of the early parts of the game. X is my personal favorite, and it’s pretty linear also.

    After doing about 5 missions and wandering around for a few hours, I’m blown away with Pulse. It’s amazing. It really pushed the game from good to great IMO. I think I’ll be spending a lot of hours there.

    Also anyone who said the game is only 35 hours is lying. I did a little grinding here and there, and it took me about 35 hours just to get to pulse. Even if you made a bee-line to the end of the game, I’m guessing it would be at least 40 hours or so.

  72. Roca.:

    while the game has its good stuff, what I hate about is that there is nothing to it other than:
    walk forward -> fight -> walk forward -> fight ->cut scene -> fight

    you do that for at least 30hrs, it gets boring. even more boring when you dont even have to look at the screen to win ‘most’ battles.. pressing X will just do it for you.

    there quality is there, but the content is not. certainly one of the worst FF games (content/experience wise)

  73. ncaissie:

    It’s so nice without Ivan LOL.
    I kinda wish I had him on my PSN so I could shoot him in waw.

  74. ncaissie:

    I’m out!

  75. CarlB:

    Roca, what was I wrong about? I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t know everything there is to know about any subject, let alone video games. There are lots of sources for everything, some better or more up to date than others. I found some things you were wrong about in the past as well, so what is the big deal?

    I specifically stated PS2 had more games than Nintendo before you ever posted (on this thread for some reason). Not only that but I also stated that despite Nintendo being consistently recognized for having “the greatest franchises of all time”, this is what I believed to be our common ground when comparing Nintendo and Sony:

    “Sony has brought more new IP’s this gen and last.
    Sony has better franchises this gen and last.
    I prefer Sony’s franchises overall when compared to Nintendo’s.”

  76. Roca.:

    you were arguing just for the sake of not giving credit the playstation platform. Playstation have brought/revived/innovated more franchises than any other company….almost 8K games for PS1 alone. Nintendo will never come even close.
