New Natal game ‘River Rush’ detailed

April 18, 2010

It’s official, Ricochet isn’t the only first-party Natal game. Which is a good job as one casual game does not make for a promising debut for the motion-sensing system.

It’s quite hard to know how excited to be about Natal on the Xbox 360. Because all we’ve really seen of it so far is Ricochet demonstrated a few times, and a few other mini-games glimpsed from afar.

However, some people have seen more than just Ricochet, with U.S. movie exec James Gunn detailing a game called River Rush on his blog (via CVG). He said:

It’s a game where you stand side by side in a river raft, so it’s two people playing at once. To move right, you have to step right; to move left, you have to step left. As you rush down right rapids, you have to jump up and slap floating stars in the air – the whole raft jumps up every time you do.

This game was even more exhilarating than the kicking one, and even more aerobically challenging. In fact, I’d say the ONLY drawback to the Natal some people may have is that you have to get up off your ass to play it. But, for me, a person who likes exercise and gaming, it’s sort of a dream come true. An hour of playing Natal every night will definitely burn calories.

It doesn’t sound the most-exciting game, I have to say. But maybe there’s some leeway for some fun outside the basic rules, as Gunn explored with his playing partner Dave.

Dave’s avatar was a girl during River Rush, probably because Dave feels like a little princess inside, and I suddenly realized how awesome it would be for my avatar to molest Dave’s. As my avatar rubbed its crotch against Dave’s avatar’s ass the Microsoft folks started laughing and said that was the first time they had seen anyone do that. I was extremely proud of myself. I’m sure millions of little assholes will follow in the wake of my avatar-raping, but I want it to be noted in my Wikipedia page that I was the very first.

I get the feeling “avatar-raping” will become a big hit then Natal arrives. But as pleased as Gunn was with River Rush, he’d rather be playing an FPS with Natal, saying:

Whether I’m historically acknowledged or not, the Natal was an amazing piece of technology and I’ll be the first one in line to buy one when they come out during the holidays. Bayman told me there were boxing and football and other Natal games coming out, but I really, really can’t wait to shoot someone on that fucking thing.

I know the feeling. I’m just a little worried that holding my hand out and using my index finger as a trigger will make me feel like I’m 12-years-old again.

so is this one for the hardcore fans?

  2. Happyhockum:

Like Sony won’t be desperate to grab a share of the new market Wii has opened up & that Natal will expand.

  3. Roca.:

the Market of Natal was opened by a PS2 peripheral called “Eye Toy” lol….they think MS is being innovative

  4. jojo29:

Yeah like ms innovative approach to their new mobile 7 strategy….they have openly admitted to following apples approach withie iphone…right down to mistakes like no copy/paste or multitasking…

Back on topic, cool, I don’t care for natal/move, but at least both are garnering good previews…move moreso than natal but at least good news for fans of both

  5. CAD:

Avtar Rapping Ohh I can’t wait. Harry pucker up big boy. LOL

  6. phranctoast:

    Lol.

  7. Ivan_PSP:

FATAL is a FAILURE already no one cares for it not even M1CR0$0FT. Project FATAL is a joke.

  8. stopstopp:

That’s right kiddies, if you want to slap balls, buy the 360!

  9. harry sachz:

hahaah come and get me CAD. My avatar does look like he enjoys that thing.

  10. Rhino:

Great, so if trash talking by some prepubescent fuckwad isn’t bad enough, now you get to be virtually felt up.

Suppose for CAD that’s one way to get attention!

As for the games, so far all they are prompoted to be are high def versions of wii games.

  11. Spideydog:

Yaaaaaaawn. I hope they have a firecracker of a game to announce for E3, because so far ….. BORING

I willing to give Natal a go, but not if their games are falling down rapids grabbing stars and shit, wacking a stupid ball around, or avatar rapping …. sigh

  12. SW:

I wonder how long until they have to implement ‘body filtering’ after some 12 year old gets felt up and mommy see’s it…

  13. phranctoast:

I have to assume MS is completely banking on the “controller less” aspect of Natal being it’s prime advertising and selling point to consumers as this doesn’t sound any better than the canoe game for wii.

Maybe they’ll call it Natal sports resort. ;)

  14. CarlB:

Why did you pick 12 for the age instead of 17?…

  15. Ivan_PSP:

Because that’s the right age. I guess.

  16. phranctoast:

Probably because he knows 17 years olds will still be busy playing whatever iteration of cod is the most popular at that time.
    (cod:black ops)

  17. Roca.:

why did you pick 17 for the age istead of 84? ;)

  18. Roca.:

    pew, pew, pew…….

  19. ncaissie:

” but I really, really can’t wait to shoot someone on that fucking thing.”

I use to do this all the time when I was 4.
pew, pew, pew. Then I discovered some sticks are shaped like guns. Then my parent bought me toy guns.

See my point? Not you carl, cad and HH. I know you can’t se past the point of your noses.

  20. gunstar:

also based on the Israeli tech demo you have to be within 4.3 meters range for Natal to properly see and detect you. Outside that point Natal is basically useless. Where is 3-D gaming in that?

  21. Roca.:

is this the innovation HH was talking about?

  22. Happyhockum:

Pbot fanboys pi$$ed off that Natal is working out to function well.

That opens up lots of interesting possibilities……and they know it.

Awwww, nevermind, your pink eye-piece will just have to do for you lot – until Sony eventually copy the concept & produce something like Natal.

  23. Ivan_PSP:

FATAL is already a huge FAILURE on gamers eye and developers. Can you say RED BALLS LMFAO.

  24. phranctoast:

    @Happy

Did I read that right? Did you say “copy the concept” when trying to put down Sony in favor of MS? Natal is simply an advanced eyetoy.

    Holy Shit!
    Talk about blind fanboy!

    BTW.
I will bet anything on MS adding a Move/Wii like wand to Natal before Sony eliminates the controller in favor of just the camera.

  25. ncaissie:

In other news MS releases a new Natal game “Bum Rush”
The xbots rush out to buy it and it out sells Halo 1, 2 and 3 combined.

oh, There is that gay sex stuff again!

  26. Happyhockum:

    phranctoast

    Bullsh!te.

Voice & face recognition coupled with full body motion detection on that eye-piece toy?

    I don’t thinks so.

    Wise up.

  27. Roca.:

“Voice & face recognition coupled with full body motion detection on that eye-piece toy?”

PS Eye already can do that, and its already out too.
Have you seen the GT5 video showing full head tracking feature.

  28. Roca.:

so far MS has not shown anything that the PS3 can’t do.

Ricochet and River Rush can be done on PS3 easily

  29. RomasantaMC:

    @Roca
Untrue, MS is a innovative leader when it comes to avatar molestation.

  30. phranctoast:

    Voice recognition

    Face recognition

  32. Happyhockum:

Yeah, as I thought, you cherry pick the bits they might be able to do but ignore Natal does it all.

    Fail.

  33. phranctoast:

    Fail?

If fail means “made you look like a fuckin’ tool”, then yes… you are correct.

  34. Roca.:

    Lol

Nobody said Natal can’t do any of that, u were the one who said the PS3 can any of those.

U are trying to twist shit to make seen as if it was phranc who started it.

  35. ncaissie:

    LOL

  36. Kushy:

Hahahahaha, you guys are in love with Happy! Just admit it! ;)

  37. Kushy:

I’m willing to keep an open mind with Natal and Move. I will try before I buy either! I think both companies have a good idea of what they are doing. I think both can do very well, time will tell! :)

  38. FahKinSuPah:

    @gunstar

“also based on the Israeli tech demo you have to be within 4.3 meters range for Natal to properly see and detect you. Outside that point Natal is basically useless. Where is 3-D gaming in that?”

    4.3 meters = 13 feet

Thats actually a pretty good detection range.

  39. CarlB:

Does anybody here like any Eye games, or heavily use Eye features in games or otherwise?

  40. phranctoast:

I own it but there hasn’t really been too much support from Sony. There’s a couple of games that support it as the primary input device, but mostly games that “also” use it for just camera (burnout paradise)

I’m afraid to play Eye of Judgment. The fear stems from my junk shrinking up and never getting laid again if I do.

  41. Happyhockum:

    Kushy

It’s my sheer magnetism, what can I say?

A little gang of saddo stalkers like little leg-humping puppies all of my very own.
    Squalking and yapping for attention.

    Bless.

    ;)

  42. ncaissie:

I plan to get the eye toy for the eye pet.
My kids liked it in the trailer.

  43. Roca.:

its funny how phranc made HH like a fool, then HH tried to imply that Phranc was the one who made the original comment.

the dude is out of straws

  44. phranctoast:

That was a bit confusing Roca.

I thought I stepped into Bizarro world.

  45. ncaissie:

You have now entered…. The twilight zone!

  46. CarlB:

I saw that episode… they were putting pentagrams and candles on their PS3′s and worshiping them.

  47. Spideydog:

Never got EyeToy – once again, like my thoughts on Natal, I am not a fan of no peripheral and Pew, Pew, Pew.

We will see if Natal decides to ship with a controller for those that think like me. One would hope so :)

  48. phranctoast:

I think Natal will prove to be the best device to get for exercise related games.

  49. CarlB:

EyeToy has been a bad joke so far, it’s yet to be seen whether Natal and Move “Magic” Wands are.

  50. Roca.:

Natal has been a joke so far
    Milo
    Rocochet
    River Rush
    Geometric Wars

they all look as dumb as Eye Toy games

  51. CarlB:

Geometry Wars actually looked pretty sharp… so did the Orange Box and the martial arts demo, along with the gesture and voice nav for Netflix. I also liked the SOCOM and Motion Fighter demos for Move. Even so, nothing on Natal or Move looks as dumb as Eye Toy party or that flying monkey. Thankfully.
