Bungie: New Halo game… in 10 years
Xbox 360 owners had better make the most of the forthcoming Halo: Reach, because it’s going to be the last Halo game for a while, at least from Bungie. Possibly ever. But never say never.
Halo: Reach is due to be released this fall on the Xbox 360, with the multiplayer beta landing on May 3. There’s no doubt that Halo: Reach is going to be huge, maybe even becoming the best-selling entry in the series of all time eventually. But then that’s it. No more Halo games are due from Bungie in the near future.
However, it’s refusing to count out revisiting the series again in the far future, so there is still hope.
Joystiq recently interviewed Lars Bakken, lead multiplayer designer at Bungie. They asked him, “Is this it for Halo from Bungie then?” And Bakken replied:
For Bungie? As far as right now, currently, yes. This is our last Halo Bungie game. Now in the future, who knows? You can never say never, because things change. Maybe ten years down the line we decide to make another Halo game, but for right now, yes. This is it for us.
That’s right folks, there may be another Halo game in 10 years time. Possibly. Maybe. But don’t hold your collective breath. Instead, just let the Halo: Reach experience wash over you because it’ll be a while until anything similar occurs again.

I predict that if they make a none halo game and it tanks then they will be back on the halo cash cow. Heck, its what I would do.
April 22nd, 2010
I bet there’s going to be a new Halo next year. Made by some other company. If Microsoft pays Bungie a bit more you will see another Halo from them also.
April 22nd, 2010
@ Ivan,
I am pretty sure that’s why Microsoft formed 343 Industries.
April 22nd, 2010
Like i say. Halo is getting milked out for ever.

MLB.TV plays ball live with Sony PS3

At least they are up front about it, instead of talking it up and it still not being released years later.

MLB TV coming to PS3.

Well, my 3rd official xbox360 rechargeable controller battery died to today, refusing to charge and staying flat …… Grrrrr Back to standard batteries for me then.
Mean while, all 4 of my ps3 rechargeable controllers are fault free …….
April 22nd, 2010
That’s a common Xbox 360 controller problem. If that happens to any PS3 controller Sony’s policy got you cover for life and %100 free.
April 22nd, 2010
Really Ivan? How? A controller I got for Christmas won’t charge at all anymore. It’s practically brand new. I was just going to buy and new one and return the old one.
April 22nd, 2010
Marathon will be everything halo was and better. 343 studios will be the treyarch of halo. People will flock to marathon as when people flocked to call of duty when the talent left medal of honor.
April 22nd, 2010
Thats interesting Phranc ……
April 22nd, 2010
“Like i say. Halo is getting milked out for ever.”
Why not? If I was MS I wouldn’t kill the series until I stopped making piles of money on it. It is common sense.
April 22nd, 2010
The PS3 controller that came with my 80gb bc PS3 doe not charge or even connect to the PS3. It is not DS.
April 22nd, 2010
“I was just going to buy and new one and return the old one.”
hahaha, best tactic ever.
but yeah, I have read that Sony replace the DS3 for you if the battery died.

What’s up with rechargeable AAs?
I haven’t had a problem with mine.
Lithium-ion batteries are weird – whatever the brand or console they are used in.
They have a fixed life-span and are very picky about how you treat them.
I read this recently -
“If you usually don’t recharge until the controller shuts off, you’re killing your batteries.
Li-Ion batteries would rather be charged a little bit every day than have a full discharge-recharge cycle every week”
April 22nd, 2010
Suppose I will have to start using mine. Been using them in something else.
April 22nd, 2010
It’s got to be better than using standards!
April 22nd, 2010
I’ve had mine since launch almost 4 and a half years ago, but they are starting to have shorter life now.
April 22nd, 2010
LOL @ Spidey
the Battery RROD on you….
April 22nd, 2010
another problem for the 360. . . .
April 22nd, 2010
“Like i say. Halo is getting milked out for ever”
Hardly Milking it – 6 games in nearly 10 years is not much and is still nowhere near as bad as EA with all their sport series or Square Enix and Final Fantasy. And nobody can top Sega with Sonic the Hedghog!
April 22nd, 2010
battery packs are going to crap out on you sooner or later anyway…
Ive just had an interesting issue with mine.
I have 2 controllers, 1 white, 1 black. Both wireless.
The white battery pack is Intec, but the black one is official MS pack I bought used.
The charging cord for the intec just doesn’t work right.
So I eventually bought an Energizer brand from gamestop. That never worked right.
So I eventually found a used MS offical cable and that works fine lol. Go figure
When I use any cord but the MS one it either doesn’t want to charge at all or won’t charge the battery fully
April 22nd, 2010
@Rimmer
“or Square Enix and Final Fantasy”
I have to call shenanigans on you there.
FF is far from milked. We get a new #FF game every few years and they are always good.
If you really want to talk about franchses being milked we can talk about Guitar Queero
April 22nd, 2010
They’re also completely independant games.

@Phranc
Sony announced today that you can HD-stream baseball games through the seasons from your PS3 (with DVR functions)
the sirvice will be available today for US and Canada and you also have to be a MLBTV subscriber.
The PSN premiun service has officially started.
btw, did you see the game yesterday, hugues has to be the unluckiest pitcher ever..twice now he has been close to throw a no-no, the first time he was suddenly injured in the 7th and yesterday he lost track of the ball (which should hace counted as a error).
April 22nd, 2010
I didn’t stay up for the whole game. Got to sleep around 11.
The baseball package is good. That sounds like something that would be great for you, as I assume in Boston you don’t see that many Yankees games.
April 22nd, 2010
Xbox is getting a TV channel of its own.
It’s being announced soon.
April 22nd, 2010
what channel?
April 22nd, 2010
“If you usually don’t recharge until the controller shuts off, you’re killing your batteries.
Li-Ion batteries would rather be charged a little bit every day than have a full discharge-recharge cycle every weekâ€
@Happyhockum
My =0, I didn´t know that. I´ll ask Google for more info.
April 22nd, 2010
Sony’s policy is if your PS3 controller stops charging they will replace the battery themselves for free just call them up i still use my SixAsis 60GB controller plus a couple of DUALSHOCK 3.
PS3 is getting a 3D Channel plus MLB TV next month.
Is already on the news. The Xbox channel is in talk for EUROPE Sky. Sony always wins.
April 22nd, 2010
*wipes brow*
I think we narrowly dodged a full blown fanboy war over battery type…
April 22nd, 2010
Seems like the best one can do is recharge when ~20% of energy is left in the battery. I´m going to try that.
April 22nd, 2010
LOL at SW. Just for the record I wasn’t trying to start one, I was just venting. Will use my rechargeable’s now which are pretty good ones. As HH said, they are better than the throw aways
April 22nd, 2010
2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa
Sony is going to broadcast this in full 3D. I don’t care about this kind of sport but damn in 3D it will be awesome to watch from home.
April 22nd, 2010
bleh soccer. Bring on the 0-0 draws.
April 22nd, 2010
@harry
lol, indeed. I always found the actual fans more interesting than the game.
April 22nd, 2010
ha same here Roma. The English hooligans are interesting to say the least. I used to own a game about 10 years ago called ‘Hooligan’ on the PC where you control a crowd of soccer hooligans.
April 22nd, 2010
hey harry.
Now you can watch Yankees awesomeness!!!!!
April 22nd, 2010
I’m one of the people who actually like “football” as we like to call it. This will be really cool if Sony broadcasts the World Cup.
April 22nd, 2010
In only 5 weeks, God Of War 3 sold more than 2 million copies around the world. Now it’s one of the many PS3 exclusives that sold more than a million copies. Also SOCOM Confrontation made it this week to that list. It sold in more than 6 months 1 million copies. Then we only count the blu-ray sales and not the PSN sales.’
April 22nd, 2010
hey ivan. . .go wank over your little fantasy about sales somewhere else.
your an idiot, you hype all these exclusives and never buy them. i only buy exclusives and the rare multiplat. .but you are fucking disgrace to us ps3 fanboys. its idiots like you that destructoid and n4g write articles about how us Sony fanboys are the worst. buy all these games and actually play them instead of using them as your sexual partners and ornaments.
April 22nd, 2010
Omg finally, no more halo for a while, thats sweet.
April 22nd, 2010
@ phranctoast,
That’s if it gets licensed for here, we seem to miss out on a lot down here. We get about 1-3 live baseball games here on TV, and most occasions it’s a Yankees game.
I wonder how much bandwidth it will suck? Another thing we pay a premium for down here.
April 23rd, 2010
Ultima:
There’s going to be another HALO game yearly.
harry sachz:
I hope Sony continues making this PSN Shows and sport services. If MLB is successful will see NFL, NHL, MLS and NBA hopefully.
That will give Sony more money to make new awesome sequels or prequels and new IP’s.
This year I’m buying more PS3 exclusives like i always do plus a couple multiplatform.

Hey Harry, looks like Dynamic Digital Depth is based in your neck of the woods, and have already proven a 3D solution without glasses:
“Smart phones will take 3-D mainstream
…the biggest problem with 3-D: the need for special glasses that deliver a separate image to each eye… (Flack’s glassless) technology can be used with the much-hyped 3-D televisions announced in January (which require glasses), but its biggest impact will be as a way to create content for mobile devices with autoÂstereoscopic 3-D displays, which work by directing light to deliver different versions of an image directly to each of a viewer’s eyes. The effect works best over a narrow range of viewing angles, so it is ill suited to television or cinema screens. But phones are generally used by one person at a time and are easily held at the optimum angle. That’s why mobile multimedia devices are likely to win the race to bring 3-D into the mainstream. Powered by Flack’s software, Dynamic Digital Depth has become an early leader in mobile 3-D. The software was built into the B710, which Samsung released in South Korea in 2007, and Samsung has licensed 3-D content generated by Dynamic Digital Depth for its latest 3-D phone, the W960, released in March. Research firm DisplaySearch recently predicted that by 2018 there will be 71 million such devices worldwide.”

CharlieB,
Interesting. I wonder if this is the same type of technology that the 3DS is going to use.

Why didn’t we get any news about the new “XCOM” game? I would like to know what Mike Ferro and Dave Parrack think of it.
April 23rd, 2010
Looks like people really need to enjoy Halo: Reach Around when it comes out lol

so true. lol he’s almost always the first troller to post bashing xbox. I f*$%ing hate fanboys, both sides! Psbots ARE THE WORST, at least xbots can be honest enough to admit that not everything MS is perfect & the best.
April 23rd, 2010
seriously, its funny what ppl will do these days.
first they will post a troll comment in favor of a specific group/product…..then they claimed to be in favor of the other group/product while bashing it at the same time……all to try to make impression here.
April 23rd, 2010
CarlB
They still have to get around the whole ‘sweet-spot’ thing with 3D (both glasses & no glasses systems).

Let’s see if Halo Reach ends the series on a high note. I will probably play this game when it comes out.
April 23rd, 2010
No one seems to share my pessimism that Bungie no longer making Halo games will be the downfall of the series, huh?
Can anyone come up with one instance in which a game series was pushed off to a different development team than original and was actually just as good if not better?
I can come up with plenty to support the other way.
April 23rd, 2010
phranctoast
If their estimates of when the next truly original Halo is going to appear are only 1/3rd right it’ll be an apples and oranges comparison.
I would be confident that the next next gen will be out by 3yrs time, easily.
In which case with (relatively) huge memory, much faster and more able components the next Halo should make the current games look like something from a Playstation 1.
(that’s not to say oldie games can’t still be good but you get the idea)
April 23rd, 2010
phranctoast
I agree, no one can make it like Bungie. They are %150 committed to their games/ players.
Just checked bungie.net there has been just under half a million players online in the last 24hrs.
April 23rd, 2010
@Happy.
At no point will I disagree with the advancement of technology and the creation of better graphics on that said technology. A game could have next next gen graphics and still suck though. I’m really talking more of the overall experience rather than simply graphics, which we know will look better with better tech.
I was thinking more about the question I posed here.
-Twisted Metal went down hill once Single Trac stopped making the games. 989 studios took over for TM3 and TM4 and the series went downhill. It wasn’t until the original developers (led by jaffe) and now part of ingog inc. (layer incognito) came back around a produced TM:black that the series went back on track.
-Rare no longer makes Bond games. Never have they been the same since.
-Naughty Dog stopped making Crash Bandicoot games. Travelers tales took over and they went multiplatform and they just are lower in quality.
-Medal of Honor went downhill after 2015 left and formed Infinity Ward to make the COD games. The humor here is that now that They key members of IW left to form Respawn, the COD days are numbered.
+Tomb Raider. Here’s one that could go both ways. Originally made by Core and pushed to Crytal Dynamics. I really didn’t notice any quality change here. The biggest critiques was that the game really didn’t change too much from the original (which imo was a relief).
+Dead Rising 2. Well only time will tell, but DR2 is being developed by a Western developer as Capcom has stated that DR was too Japanese. Maybe this will help or hurt the series. Only time will tell.
April 23rd, 2010
-Guitar Hero without Harmonix and now in the hands of Neversoft.
(It’s funny how so many of these poor decisions revolve around Activision)
April 23rd, 2010
Here’s a couple to look out for to see if they follow suit.
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow
Metroid: Other M
April 23rd, 2010
-Socom Confrontation and Socom Tactical Strick went downhill after they were handed to Slant 6.
April 23rd, 2010
Strick = Strike
April 23rd, 2010
-Tony Hawk is another activision franchise. a new team worked on Tony Hawk Ride
April 23rd, 2010
-Silent Origins and Home Coming were both done by different dev team and those games werent as good as the previous ones.
April 23rd, 2010
Nickel cadmium rechargable batteries require full discharge/full rechrage cycles for maximum lifespan. Lithium Ion’s big advantage over NiCa batteries was that they didn’t require the same type of system, and actually prefer to kept topped off for longevity. Li-Ion also have better charge levels, but like a fish, will fight at full strength until dead. Li-Ion batteries are far more likely to just die when compared directly NiCa.
April 23rd, 2010
Socom confrontation is a decent game NOW, but the first 9 months of it being out where an insult to the purchaser. It still doesn’t feel like a current gen game, but merely a polished PS2 title. Socom4 is right up there on my list with GT5. I don’t think I would ever purchase another Slant6 PS3 title unless it gets crazy good reviews and I know people that bought it and can testify to it not sucking.
April 23rd, 2010
“I don’t think I would ever purchase another Slant6 PS3 title unless it gets crazy good reviews”
same here……year I heard the game is actually good now but I moved on long time ago. I might give it a try one of these days as I still own it
April 23rd, 2010
They could get better but they should make their own fucking IP. SOCOM Confrontation is perfect now the only thing i hate is the character view wtf is that you can’t see your whole character is like a half third person shooter.
April 24th, 2010
“they claimed to be in favor of the other group/product while bashing it at the same time”
Yes, heaven forbid, we are actually able to fairly criticize products we still enjoy. Much better to prostrate ourselves before the myth of it’s perfection and turn a blind eye to anyone and anything that tells us otherwise.
