Ubisoft’s ultimate DRM system gets hacked
Ubisoft’s ultimate DRM strategy has been criticized by many as it forces gamers to be connected to an authentication server in order to play the game. However, it appears that hackers have been able to circumvent Ubisoft’s DRM.
According to hacker group Skid Row [via Joystiq], the online DRM system has finally been hacked. Ubisoft’s DRM was once touted to be “un-hackable†as it requires communication with a remote server. However, this DRM backfired onto innocent consumers when hackers attacked the servers causing the game to become unplayable.
According to Skid Row, the crack in place for Assassin’s Creed II isn’t a regular hack as it requires redirection to an unofficial server. The hack will allow people to pirate the game, but it really doesn’t solve the annoying issue of being connected to an authentication server. Also, I have to wonder how secure an unofficial server will be anyway. Other games such as Splinter Cell: Conviction are said to use the new form of DRM.

The DRM is gone. They specifically shoot down the usage of a ‘server emulator’, I’m not quite sure where you got the idea that a 3rd party server is needed because sure as hell not in the NFO.

Where the heck does this post come from saying that the hack redirects your pirated game to an unofficial server? Nonsense! The whole point of hacking this DRM was to allow people to play the game offline. Get your facts straight before posting.

I hate them too. I can’t stand Montreal yet I know so many who love it and I don’t know why. French they can shove that up their ass. Why is it even a second language. Native should be the second language. I hate how in Ontario we put up Bilingual highway signs but go to Quebec and there a no bilingual signs and they look down on you if you don’t speak French. How can I lean French when there is no one to speak it to. I see more Chinese, Italians, Greeks, Indians, Spanish, Aribic, Russian, Africans in Toronto then you will even see a French Person. There is one little French section in Toronto that’s like a Block long and there is hardly anythng French about the area. They can seperate for all I care.

All DRM is an expensive waste of time.
It always screws the legitimate buyer by inflating prices asthey pay for that pointless gravy-train & it gives them various headaches in normal operation…… whilst the ‘pirates’ always swerve it within months if not less anyways.
Good to see some of the Pbot crowd complaining about it here, it’s just a shame they choose to worship it when it comes to Blu-ray & BD+ etc.

DRM should be a pain in every gamers ass, regardless of platform choice. I agree, it only hurts legitamite purchasers, and ACII might be the longest I have seen a hack becomes successful in years. Often the iso/crack is available in the days before a game actually releases.

As a Manitoban French Canadian/Metis, I can say I am equally annoyed and embaressed by Quebec. The French in Manitoba have managed to be proud of their heritage without shitting on the rest of canada, or trying to enact sweeping laws to force everyone to bow down to the “superior” culture of the French.
As far as Montreal goes, I love the city, but I speak french fluently so my experience would have been significantly different. For all its faults though, Montreal produced Danko Jones (awesome elemental rocker) and The Tea Party (Canadian 90s rock group), so they are allowed some slop, imo.

You guys are all noobs hating on Montreal…I live in Montreal, speak French, English, Arabic, Spanish and German. I am PROUD to be french Canadian and honestly, Quebeckers can say what they want on separation of Quebec, it’s just talk…nothing will ever happen, and hating on Quebec is not worth it because this is politics, and Canadian politics are pure shit. I mean if we don’t fight for our rights, there will be no Quebec sooner or later…we are the only french speaking province in North America…rest is English, English, English…don’t think you guys are superior, because you’re NOT.
Anyways, going back to ACII, we all agree that DRM was a bad move by Ubisoft (whether it’s Montreal or not, stfu we don’t care: IT’S A COMPANY) and we all want that stuff to disappear…I mean lots of other game companies could take that kind of system in their games too…we don’t want that!
BTW, the “crack” for ACII was NOT made by skydrow but by Dormine and it is actually a server emulator that you simply run on your computer while playing the game…nothing THAT annoying, and it’s fully secure.
PS: To those complaining that we aren’t friendly…you guys are simply ignorant…I know a lot of people that ONLY speak English and still manage to live here and even ENJOY it…some people are jerks, I agree, but I went to Toronto and New York and they were big assholes there too…
PPS: Also to those saying french sounds gay…you guys need some knowledge and some critical thought…if you think a language makes you “sound” gay is just dumb. The French language is extremely rich and beautiful…same for German, which I love…but I could NEVER say that about the English language: it’s become so simple and made only for simple communication around the world.

The sad fact is that Blu-ray does push the DRM envelope further than we’ve seen before
(the Blu-ray version of AACS was different & more difficult to break than the HD DVD version of AACS & the watermarking they use adds another layer with BD+ on top of all that).
