Bungie and EA had ‘extensive’ talks before signing with Activision

May 20, 2010

Bungie and EA had 'extensive' talks before signing with Activision Before Bungie signed a 10 year contract with Activision, the independent studio shopped around. It makes sense that one of the publishers that Bungie would have talks with is Electronics Arts.

EA is Activision’s biggest competitor in the gaming space. EA scored a partnership with Respawn Entertainment, which is made up of former Infinity Ward staff members. Bungie then announced that it had partnered up with Activision shortly after.

According to CVG, David DeMartini, GM for EA Partners explained that both companies had extensive conversations. He stated, “We had extensive conversations with them, but could never really figure out a deal that made sense for both of us. It just didn’t come to fruition.”

Of course it all comes down to money, independence and flexibility with the IPs. It could be that Bungie was demanding a lot more money than EA was willing to offer for a partnership. However, Activision signed the contract on the same day former Infinity Ward heads was fired. I wonder if Activision was a little more willing to bend with IW in chaos.

I like skinny girls i will take them both.

EA had no problem, Activision made this deal to have some positive news and to pleased horrified shareholders. But if EA had taken this deal for a good price Activision would had been very scared. Bungie better make a good game because Halo is pure trash and Marathon no one even knows it or care for it.

If it were me, I would have signed with EA.

Activision destroys their IPs by re-releasing them every year. They have cheapened every IP they own.

Also look at what happened with Infinity Ward. Acivision tr

  8. Barnabe Jones:

wtf? It posted before I was done typing.

Any who.. As long as Bobby Kotick runs Activision, they will continue to treat their fans, IPs, and employees like garbage.

  9. Barnabe Jones:

Also why in the world do they call the COD map pack a “stimulus package”? It has 4 maps (2 new, 2 recycled), and they have the nerve to charge $15 for it.

They added the “stimulus package” to the title to try and make people think it’s some kind of great value deal. The only thing it stimulates is Koticks deep pockets. One of the biggest ripoffs in DLC history.

“EA isn’t the only company to hit on the idea of a one-time-use code for online play of sports games. THQ is penalizing used sales of UFC Undisputed 2010 in exactly the same way — and, since Undisputed will be in stores next week, THQ is even beating EA to it. Codes for accessing the content will be available for second-time buyers for an additional $5.”

    Barnabe Jones:
Activision and Infinity Ward cannot be compare to Bungie since Bungie is not own or control by Activision. Also people complaint about the over priced DLC but they still buy it just like they will keep doing with Call of Duty.

The first map pack, “Stimulus Package,” was released on PlayStation Network May 4, 2010 in North America. The map pack is priced at US$14.99. The pack contains five maps: reincarnations of the Crash and Overgrown maps from Call of Duty 4, and three new maps: Bailout, a multi-level apartment complex; Storm, an industrial park littered with heavy machinery; and Salvage, an abandoned car junkyard in the middle of the snow. In addition to integrating the maps into all existing game types, the Stimulus Package adds two new game modes, randomizing the built-in game types in either normal or hardcore mode

  15. Barnabe Jones:

I’m sure that the stimulus package sold, but I haven’t seen it break the PSN top 20.

Actually the World at War packs are still up in the top instead.

    Xbox 360 – 40.3 million

    PS3 – 35.95 million

The PS3 now sits just 4.35 million shy of Xbox 360 in total consoles sold.

  24. Barnabe Jones:

After Sony wins E3 (again), they will sell even more.

  25. Ivan_PSP:

    Barnabe Jones:
Yup, and this yeah before it ends Sony will pass Xbox 360 worldwide sales that’s a sure thing.

    2. Xbox 360 – 42 million, as of 1 January 2010

    3. PlayStation 3 – 37.5 million, as of 10 May 2010

  26. twilight:

The Ps3 system has closed the gap in sales quite a bit.

  27. Ivan_PSP:

    twilight:
If Sony at E3 was to announce a release date, trailer and a demo for UNCHARTED 3, Resistance 3, Killzone 3, inFAMOUS 2 and MotorStorm 3. They will pass the Xbox 360 worldwide sales in a matter of months faster. Which we all know some of that is going to happen at E3. Sony is always closing the gap because they got awesome game provided by themselves first party. Microsoft doesn’t care about video games just money which is why they are get bitch slap by Sony always.

Red Dead Redemption: Another reason not to trust review scores

“Up, GamePro, GameReactor, Gameplanet,Planet Xbox 360, Telegraph, Cheat Code Central, Videogamer, Gamespy all gave Red Dead Redemption a perfect score. In these reviews there are no mentions of the glitches that prevail in some of the games modes. So, why is there no mention of these problems? Is it because Red Dead Redemption launched a web marketing campaign rivaled by few before lauch? That would be the likely answer.

Or is it that the good outweighs the bad? When I read that a game is perfect, and launch said game to find glitches within the first 10 minutes of gameplay you have to question the integrity of media outlets who have reviewed this game and give it a perfect score. Now, personally we recommend Red Dead Redemption for many reasons.”

  29. Ivan_PSP:

That’s why i only care about my own review. One that hell would anyone care for other people’s review.

  30. RomasantaMC:

    @Roca
“find glitches within the first 10 minutes of gameplay”
Yeah the MP is buggy as hell, single player seems completely fleshed out though. Where did you get the article.

  31. ncaissie:

“That’s why i only care about my own review.”
Says the idiot that shoots down every game before it is released.

  32. Roca.:

    @RomasantaMC

Yes, but what the article is trying to say that lately game reviewers feel the presure to give high scores to popular titles or titles developed by well known develpers.

GTA4 is far from perfect, I have yet to experience as many glitches and issues as I did with GTA4 …..but somehow the game is the highest rated game this gen

  33. ncaissie:

“Yes, but what the article is trying to say that lately game reviewers feel the presure to give high scores to popular titles or titles developed by well known develpers.”

The funny thing is it seems to be an Xbot bias. There is no way GOW3 shouldn’t have gotten a perfect score. How many of these reviewers are in NA?

  34. phranctoast:

    @Ivan

Your numbers are a bit off. This is according to MS 3rd quarter fiscal report which end March 31st. I included Sony’s numbers in there that were part of Sony’s 4th quarter which also ends at March 31st.

    Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 FY LTD

    360 2.1 5.2 1.5 ? 8.8 40.2

    PS3 3.2 6.5 2.2 ? 11.9 35.7

    WII 3.5 11.3 ? ? 14.8 67.4

These are the most accurate numbers we have until the end of June and we probably wont know until mid July for MS and mid August for Sony.

  35. SW:

@Roca – They fixed all the MP hitches.

Stop your hate for a game you just don’t like the look of but probably haven’t spent 60 seconds with.

  36. SW:

Oh and they did it server side (‘private’ online games always worked fine and the SP is flawless), spent 6 hours on it last nite chasing down the same 5 guys in free roam, didn’t glitch once….

  37. phranctoast:

Roca makes a decent point. I recall a story about some guy getting fired because he said negative stuff about RDR.

It’s a cool game. Perfect. Hardly.

Graphics wise, Ubisoft still takes the open world sandbox cake with Assassins creed 2, and Far Cry 2.

FC2 is probably hands down the best looking Sandbox game ever made.

I would have been happy with better controls. Mercenaries 2 and InFamous both handle a hell of a lot better then RDR.

I think with GTA4 and RDR the good far outweighs the bad and helps justify the higher review scores. So far I’d give RDR a solid 9.

  38. SW:

Maybe in the reviewers opinion (aka a review) the bugs that were present did not detract from the gameplay.

On top of that, the MP bugs I experienced have all been fixed. There was no client patch so it must have been server side and I understand it ONLY effected public play (and only free roam, not any of the competitive game-types). So its quite possible that the reviewers never saw these bugs as they either didn’t spend a lot of time in free roam or the servers getting hammered on release day caused these bugs (hence the reviewers not seeing them as the games were reviewed before public release).

I’m going to try the 500 horse thing tonight tho, that looks awesome :P I think its more of a bad design thing rather than a bug tho. Your horse probably ‘times out’ after X seconds in case it gets stuck so you can call another.

Anyways P, I had the most fun I’ve ever had in a game last nite for a long long long long time during that epic 6 hour chase down. Awesome.

  39. Roca.:

“Stop your hate for a game you just don’t like the look of but probably haven’t spent 60 seconds with”

what hate? I stated my experience with GTA4 which has similarities with what the article I quoted is saying..

even though I own the game (waiting for it to arrive) I’m not hating on it…..I’m just going with have I have been hearing for some blorge members (including you). you stated that you characters disappeared on you….Phranc said he experience some freezing issues. and few on my friends have experience other issues and glitches.

Again SW, not even hating on the game just agreeing with the article which also says the game is phenomenal but not even close to being a perfect game. the whole point I was trying to make was the usually ‘some’ titles gets higher reviews simply because of their popularity (it does not necessarily means they are a bad game)

my bad If it came out like I was hating on the game, I actually liked what I have seen so far and I havent heard nothing but great things about it.

  40. ncaissie:

What would you give GOW 3 Phranc?

  41. phranctoast:

    9.7 and GOW2 gets a 9.8

  42. twilight:

    I give GOW 3 a perfect 10/10.

  43. ncaissie:

    I found 3 was a lot different then 1 and 2.
1 and 2 had a lot more destructible environment and more hidden stuff like breakable walls. 3 is focused on action and killing the gods. 9.99 for 3 because Zeus looked to plastic to me. They did a better job on him in 2(< collection) then 3.

  44. Roca.:

    GOW2 was all CGI

  45. SW:

    OoT forever! ;)

  46. Roca.:

    “OoT forever!”

    indeed……

  47. Barnabe Jones:

I’m really looking forward to Red Dead.

Looks like I have a chance of GameFly shipping it out today. We’ll see though.

We’ll have to get a posse together.

  48. ncaissie:

“We’ll have to get a posse together.”
I’ll probably break down and get it tonight.

  49. SW:

    Blorge Posse ;)

  50. phranctoast:

    Not tonight for me.

    Mets and Yankees playing.

tomorrow I go to the game.

  51. ncaissie:

    “Not tonight for me.

    Mets and Yankees playing.

tomorrow I go to the game.”

That’s not as important as playing RDR with your Blorge Posse.

  52. Roca.:

can you play co-op in the game?

  53. ncaissie:

“can you play co-op in the game?”
    I think so.

  54. RomasantaMC:

    @SW
“They fixed all the MP hitches.”
I noticed that last night. The one other time I played my party members, me and enemies turned invisible(a MP breaking prob).
“spent 6 hours on it last nite chasing down the same 5 guys in free roam,”
Even funner getting into a posse and holding down a 4 story building from cops and other players.

    Whats your PsnId?
