Sony jumps on ‘evil used games’ bandwagon
Is it just me that’s starting to get really annoyed with the greed of the games industry when it comes to second-hand sales?
It started with EA two weeks ago announcing plans to charge buyers of used games if they wanted to go online. THQ and Ubisoft have since come on board, and now Sony is jumping on the bandwagon.
SCEA SVP of publisher relations Rob Dyer told Gamasutra:
I am a big believer in encouraging the gamer to have a reason to hold onto [a game] and to continue to play, and for the publisher to be able to see something if there is a second sale. Because right now, for years, as a publisher, we saw nothing [from used sales]. Very frustrating.
As a first party, I understand why there’s a second sale, but I’m not always excited about it. Look, this has been a tough couple of years. People have not been making money, and I think the used games business has been having a huge impact in that.
I’m happy to debate merits, pros, and cons with folks at GameStop and have that discussion because again, I’ve sat on the other side and I’ve seen what can happen. People need to see a way to monetize that second sale.
Wait, what? The games industry is completely alone in thinking it has some sort of right to a double payday when a product that has been legally bought and paid-for is sold on to someone else.
It’s the right of the original buyer to do what they damn well want with that product, which includes selling it on to someone else, or a shop which can then sell it on again.
I see no justification for this campaign by publishers. Not even the notoriously-greedy music industry has tried to claim it is owed something from second-hand sales. And the games industry is risking being seen as money-grabbing b**tards by heading down this road.

There’s a credible argument to be made though, especially for an online game. If you buy a second hand game and play it online, you’ve not contributed to the cost of the servers that’s being run and paid for by the publisher.
It’s when it moves to offline games that they’ll be problems. I can very much envisage all games requiring an internet connection to see whether it’s a new or used game, and having to pay a price to play the game once it discovers it’s a second hand purchase.

Finally got my internet connection back!!

Of all the developers & publishers out there, looks like Nintendo is the only one having agood night’s sleep in a big bed of cash.
Like children, they are not worried about this stuff. Even their AAA games costs much much less to develop; are already a lot cheaper to publish and sell yet move millions of units, evergreen with millions of dollars in revenue. Heh, even their bargain bin units are new and untouched.
Sony already took lots of pages from Nintendo’s quality exclusive game phylosophies. Now they should take some more from this old timer when it comes to economics. If they implement this business model, now that we are still in recession, then us PS3 gamers will enjoy quality games from Sony at very affordable prices.

Like for me I am buying my second copy of Uncharted 2. Why? As back up.
Because of its quality I play the game so much to the point of melting. If the game is good you are compelled to buy it & keep it not trade it. This is the best way to combat piracy and this used game issue IMHO.

Rimmer is right, developers will make more money developing titles for both consoles and that’s why they are forced to be limited for the lowest common denominator specs (360) and wont take advantage of what the PS3 offer……for example, Capcom had to cut content out of Lost Planet 2 because of the 360 limitations….

Just read the whole interview. This was not an announcement as to a new strategy. This was merely Dyer answering a question asked, and falls in line with a lot of the other topics that were mentioned in the same interview that already gave Blorge two news stories (RDR and Batman AA exclusive content).
As for the general topic at hand. It’s a very interesting and debatable topic.
What should they do? We can look at things they are doing to keep games in peoples hands so they stay away from the used games market. As of now they:
-Make enticing instant free DLC for people that preorder.
-Add multiplayer features so there’s a reason to keep the game after the SP is over.
-DLC that happens months after the games comes out to keep the game in people hands and avoid the used game market.
-Making great deals for new games with retailers. (recently is actually been cheaper getting new games than some used because of these deals. $20 RDR gift card is an example)
What else can they do?
-If they lower the price of their games say…two months in, it will just devalue the used game buyback and the used games retailers will still undercut the new games by dropping their price accordingly.
I think all MP games should come with three codes. Those three codes will be good enough for family members or friends borrowing stuff.
I’m one of the people that believe these companies shouldn’t be obligated to support you online if you don’t want to give them a dime. This opinion stems more for dedicted servers than connection servers. So, if the game is strictly P2P this opinion is void. Unfortunately this knocks EA out as most of their sports games don’t need to be dedicated as there’s only a couple of people playing. Something like MAG on the other hand is as close as possible to being an MMO without being one, and we all know that people pay for those.
Also.. they comparison the music industry is wrong as they also didn’t like the used CD’s market and thats well documented. There’s also very few big used CD resellers. I mean…seriously…Even Amazon deals in used games. They don’t deal in used cd’s. Plus music took care of itself with DRM and digital content. Lets face it. You’re not sharing music anymore.

the PSPGo was targeting the digial market and its release did not force anybody out of the used games market, you had the choice to either buy an disc-based PSP that can play retail dics (new and used) or opt to buy the digital only device…..in the end you choose the path that better suits you.
but Sony has yet to charge for online play in neither their network or their games….

I mentioned a few days ago about how i wish there was a stat page somewhere in the game. Well i found something out this morning that does give you a few helpful stats but not everything. When you go to Save or load a game just highlight the game you want info on but dont press X yet. If you give it a second it will display some info.

Stunts

Lost Planet 2 gives you a trophy/achievement if you hold on to the game for 6 months….
the trophy is called “Running Through 6″ and can be unlocked 6 months after you load the game for the first time.

LMAO just finished off Infamous and got my first platinum. Kessler gave me one hell of a run for my money. Other than that the game was actually EASIER to beat my second time around, despite it being on Hard mode lmao. Evil is just so badass.

Kessler wasn’t too bad. There was some cheap shit in hard though. You can’t see the invisible barrier and if you stray into it he throws you to the middle of the fighting ground,throws three grenades at you and it’s like an instance death.
SO…if you go to far to a point that you can’t see you die instantly..more or less.

Kessler did get somee quick deaths in on me in the beginning. I started to get used to his attacks and just used Arc Lighting on him alot. Worked like a charm. Most of the quick deaths he got on me was when he used that radial ground shockwave attack.

in 3DDGH it’s more of an event. You have to go to the inn(i think its the inn lol) in that one town before you completee the temple. It starts off an event that spans the game. Something about a robot game or something. I don’t know much more details about it lmao
Probbaly gonna go back to 3DDGH today though, since infamous is now out of the way.
Uncharted… hmmm well i can remember that i had gotten past the sub. I think I ran back through the temple after that… and thats it lmao. I haven’t restarted it yet.

If you cut out sales of used games then its going to adversly affect new game sales sooner or later.

I don’t buy many used games. But I do rent, and that is my beef with this. I like to check out a game and make sure I like it before I fork over $60. I’m not going to pay $60 sight unseen. I like buying games, but I won’t be buying if I can’t try them first. If they do this I won’t be able to rent and try out the online and if I buy it unseen and it sucks I won’t be able to sell it!
