OnLive offering free one year subscription and game

OnLive offering free one year subscription and game Many of you may remember OnLive from last year’s GDC. The cloud based streaming video game service made quite an impact last year with its futuristic take on video gaming. The service is prepping for its big launch with free stuff.

According to Big Download, OnLive is offering a one year free subscription along with one free game to the first 25,000 users. Previously the promo was limited to only three months free trail.

Apparently not too many gamers were interested in the previous promo as the company expanded on it significantly. Normally the service costs $14.95 per month to play games via cloud servers.

Personally I think the technology is not here yet, but OnLive is a good place to start. Conceptually, Cloud technology is the future. If you consider the times Xbox Live and PSN have been down in the past, relying completely on the Internet may not be such a great thing.

OnLive is set to launch in the U.S. on June 17 across for the PC and Mac.

I don’t think its a good idea yet, I mean even with free online a high precentage aren’t willing to connect their ps3 to the internet as shown in a prior post.

  2. Ivan_PSP:

I’m good fuck OnLive gimmick soon to fail flat.

  3. CAD:

Hey if it’s free for 1 year then really what’s stopping you from trying it. It’s got big ticket games and buying one isn’t going to kill you. If I could I would at least try it once to see if it’s worth it and to see if it really works instead of saying you think the tech isn’t here yet when they are clearly doing it and it’s been proven to work at all the conferences that they have been at. Oh come on how many times has Live really been down. Hardly ever. The only time you hear about Live going down is because of the amount of people joing the service during Christmas or to perform maintaince. I think that’s great reason to be down for such a short period of time. It was back up in a day but I personally think it was only the USA because I never noticed a thing and got a free game.

  4. CAD:

Oh dame they give you a free game even better.

  5. Spideydog:

As with netflix this service would be bottle necked by download quota’s and bandwidth space (for those that don’t have cheap, reliable unlimited download quota’s)

  6. harry sachz:

    @ spidey,

I don’t think they have download quotas in the states. Actually I think we’re the only ones with those stupid quotas.

This is why the video services on both 360 and Ps3 don’t work here. Hell, even watching Vidzone for a couple of hours chews up more than a gb.

  7. Spideydog:

    True :(

  8. lock_down:

Chalk the UK up to having stupid quotas…and soon to have everything we do monitored by music and film and “creative industries” so they can send us letters and cut us off the internet.

    I’m moving to the States.

    Canada does.

Chose the state wisely or you will face the same problem. “courtesy, your friendly neighborhood spider man.”

  11. Liquid:

ivan have you played modnation racers yet?

  12. ncaissie:

Slow day with the US on a holiday today.
Except the unemployed preschool dropout Ivan_psp.

  13. ncaissie:

Sorry Ivan, I forgot about your job selling crack in the hood. (even if it is your moms)

  14. twilight:

The majority of people across America have unlimited internet. We don’t have to usually worry about download quotas. You can download stuff twenty-fours hours a day and still not be charged anything more than your regular bill.

  15. ncaissie:

I have to pay $ when I go over. Which is pretty much every month.

  16. twilight:

    Ncaissie,
I know I would probably run over every month as well.

  17. ncaissie:

My current cap is 95GB which dropped from 125 after they started charging. Funny how that works.

  18. JofaMang:

“Sorry Ivan, I forgot about your job selling crack in the hood. (even if it is your moms)”

What is his mom’s? The hood, the crack, or the job?

  19. Spideydog:

    Prob all 3 ….

  20. SW:

    Who’s you ISP ncaissie?

I use shaw and have a 100GB cap, but I used to get to about 300GB and Shaw never whined once…

  21. ToshithegreaT:

I use airtel (100gb dl limit)

  22. CAD:

Rogers gives a 60GB cap for Express Service but it’s unlimited for Online Gaming.

  23. ncaissie:

    Rogers

  24. ncaissie:

the highest we have in Ottawa in Extreme. The others are only offered in Toronto.

    Dam TO

  25. ncaissie:

I hate rogers but I hate Bell more LOL.

  26. Roca.:

I’m playing $50 for a 20Mbs internet service with unlimited bandwidth.

  27. b0xel:

I’m using vodafon 3G here in the uk, I pay about 20$ for 10mbps download and 750 upload with unlimited bandwidth, but the latancey sucks, online gaming is no good, I’m thinking about Fiber or cable internet at the moment.

BTW, I just got a 360 elite(, had no idea the fucker was this loud.

  28. Roca.:

    @b0xel
yeah your connection was kind of laggy….10Mbps should ‘ve been good enough though

  29. RomasantaMC:

    @Boxel

You MUST install all 360 games or your gonna be pissed off at the system the whole time you play games. I was orilginally because I didn’t know they had optional installs since my PS3 always automatically installed games.

  30. b0xel:

no, Its not about that, its the damn wirless 3g, its good in speed and practicality, but it takes to mush time to communicate with a server( espacialy a far one in the US), hence, high ping= lag

  31. harry sachz:

oh yeah, those wireless 3g usb dongle thingys aren’t ideal for gaming.

  32. b0xel:

    RomasantaMC:
    I see, thanks I didn’t know that.

  33. Saber_HAHAha:

Well, my connection is 2mbps download and 256kbs upload (on paper anyways, the speed dwindles), so I won’t be getting into this anytime soon.

  34. Saber_HAHAha:

Well, better than my old satellite internet with 1000-3000ms ping that I used only about a year ago… and I was wondering why everyone was screaming at me to stop the download then kicking me on Age of Empires 2 online…

  35. b0xel:

hey guys, I’m planing to spend this summer playing some of the games i missed this last couple of months(been working like a dog, but I’m takin a month off), anyways I need some good game recommandations, both for PS3 and Xbox, something like gow, DMC…(already got darksiders) or anything else u think worth a look,

  36. b0xel:

    saber:
    LMAO!
yea sat internet is the suckiest.. i think it should only be used if u live in rural areas.

  37. Saber_HAHAha:

The distance limit from the nearest town to get cable here is 4km. I live 5km away from the nearest town. In freaking Saskatchewan. I’m extremely thankful that they put an antenna on top of a tower so that I could get faster, but… yeah. It isn’t that great.

  38. Roca.:

    @boxel
    something like GoW o DMC??

NGS2, Heavenly Sword, Bayonetta and Dante’s Inferno.

  39. harry sachz:

Heavenly Sword, i missed out on that one. I heard it’s really short. I might look for it heavily discounted.

  40. Liquid:

    harry

yeah it was short but the graphics and gameplay were great. you basically kill a whole army in it lol. i regret trading it in so ill have to buy it again. .its 15euro new in xtra vision.

btw everyone what is lair like?

  41. Ivan_PSP:

    harry sachz:
Don’t worry Heavenly Sword is still longer then Splinter Cell: Conviction, Gears of War 1 & 2, Left 4Dead All halo etc.

    Buy It Enjoy it.
