Ex-Apple exec criticizes Ballmer over Xbox 360 high failure rate – Microsoft becoming irrelevant?

Ex-Apple exec criticizes Ballmer over Xbox 360 high failure rateIn a surprising move, a former Apple exec heavily criticized Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer over his conduct with Vista and the Xbox 360’s high failure rate issue. The former exec accused Ballmer of letting his “underlings” take the fall while he remains unapologetic.

Former Apple exec, Jean-Louis Gassée wrote a lengthy piece warning shareholders to worry about Ballmer. According to Gassée, Ballmer seems to be mismanaging Microsoft and shifting blame elsewhere.

He states, “Microsoft shareholders ought to worry about Steve Ballmer’s own distortion, and about the self-inflicted effects of such a strong field.” He also adds, “We all remember Vista, it was a godsend for Apple. Did Ballmer acknowledge that there were problems? What about the Xbox 360 reliability nightmare? The apologies were left to underlings.”

Gassée calls Ballmer a salesman who is converting Microsoft from a technology leader to a “sales company.” He criticizes Microsoft’s sense of direction as the company is currently investing in a chain of coffee shops in Taiwan, while becoming irrelevant in the mobile, tablet, search and cloud computing sectors. Google and Apple have been competing fiercely across various innovative technology sectors.

It has been rumored that creative mind, J Allard left the company because Ballmer put the kibosh on the Courier, Microsoft’s prototype tablet. Also, Gassée speculates that Robbie Bach was “let go” because he took the fall for loosing the HP account.

HP was a massive Microsoft partner until the company decided to buy out Palm in order to leverage WebOS instead of the Windows platform. Gassée believes that Ballmer was the one at fault for loosing the account, yet Bach ended up taking the fall.

This all sounds familiar as it was rumored that Peter Moore took the fall for the high failure rate of the Xbox 360 (RRoD debacle) that cost Microsoft over a billion dollars.

Gassée stated that the mistakes Ballmer have made has been beneficial for Apple. He points out that Microsoft’s stock has dropped from $56 to $25.80 spanning 2000 to 2010, while Apple’s stocks have gone from $25 to $256.88. It’s interesting to note that Google’s stocks have also soared into the upper echelon of $485.63 over a ten year span.

Is Microsoft becoming irrelevant over difficulty embracing change? Even Microsoft’s video game competitor Sony is getting into the mix by holding a large presence at Google’s recent I/O conference. Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google told Sir Howard Stringer, CEO of Sony that Google has always looked towards Sony for innovation on the stage. Sony and Google have partnered up on several large cloud-based projects, including the much touted Google TV.

    Hideo Kojima is right.
Portable pocketsize handheld electronic devices like the smartphones & tablets are the modern personal computers of today.

    Man, its the War Economy!
The War for Operating System Supremacy will put PC vs Mac, or the Console Wars to shame.

Bill Gates is a genius and Ballmer is a dummy! He ruined my love for PC with Vista crap!

” I always thought that Microsoft had (at least) two great problems. The first was a lack of a strategic plan. They had all that money, but they didn’t know what to do with it all. They seemed to watch what others did, get jealous, and then try to take their market from them.”

Yeah, like being in the business of stealing exclusive games from PlayStation rather than in the business of making their own games. He does not care for video games he just want to steal the market.
Microsoft are no better than pirates on this matter.

The original Xbox used to be a game changer but now the 360 is a game killer thanks to Ballmer.
Ballmer is a traditional politician at best. His gluttony for profit has made him a numbskull.

  4. FahKinSuPah:

People talk about apple and their huge profits and shit… Windows vs Apple is still a no brainer.. Every home has Windows :-)

Apples business comes from iPhone, iPod, and now the iPad. People really don’t care as much for the computers.

Face it… a gamer won’t be buying an Apple so he can play some awsome games. Nope… he will probably be looking at an Alienware or something similar or even building his own system (like i did) and of course the OS is going to be Windows.

We should be talking about games here anyway… I feel like this article just used the 360 RRoD angle instead of actually being about it

Microsoft’s days are numbers the end is near for them. The company is going downhill and competitors like Sony, Google and Apple are all laughing all the way to the bank because Microsoft is getting destroy by the entire staff. I hope when they fall Sony buys the Xbox division and Apple buys Zune and Google everything else.

FahKinSuPah – I wouldn’t be too sure, Steam is now selling games for Mac. I would go Apple if they were more game friendly, which appears to be getting better all the time.

  8. FahKinSuPah:

    @spideydog

Steam is a game distrubution service and it isn’t the whole game market. They only represent a small piece of it. Just because the Steam service is now available on Mac doesn’t mean that every game developer will now start making Mac games. Direct X and OpenGL are 2 different animals.

Alot of companies are not going to see Mac development as feasable since it is just going to cost extra resources to develop for Mac when they might not even make a profit. Windows outnumbers Macs by far.

There is a saying that I like, because it has become so true…

    “Every home has Windows”

  9. arckain:

Of course Windows machines currently outnumer Macs, but I’ve noticed something interesting. Apple has targeted the college demographic (my demographic) and I think it’s worked (at least where I’m located). I look around my college (roughly 10k students) and Macs outnumber Windows at least 2 to 1.

And then when all these people enter the real world, they will bring their Macs along. I think Macs will rapidly catch up to Windows machines and then we will notice more games coming out on Mac, because suddenly it will be a market you cannot avoid

  11. FahKinSuPah:

    @arckain

When i was still in highschool Apple was targeting the every school demographic it could, from grade school to college.

    It still is.

When it comes to games Mac sucks

When it comes to graphic design and certain development fields Apple has it, which is why its perfect for schools and some businesses.

However normal every day use, and everything else, is where Windows excels.

Apple loves to target yuppies and people who have money and don’t know what to do with it.

Does anyone really need an iPad?

  12. FahKinSuPah:

Also I had a friend who went out and bought a Mac last year.

He was acting all stuck up about it.

    “I have a Mac!”

My responce was “yeah but you can’t do shit with it”

  13. arckain:

Well I’m saying that Macs are finally gaining significant ground at least around college campuses which will then carry over to the real world. And with that greater market share, developers won’t be able to ignore the Mac presence. Also what besides gaming can a Mac not do?

I for one won’t own a Mac for various reasons, let alone an iPad (I hate it with a passion).

  14. Roca.:

Mac can run most games nowdays.
Spore, Starcraft, WoW, Sims and games on Steam.

Mac is a bit expensive but when it comes to performace Windows is way behind…..I think Mac has captured the Laptop and Table PC market.

  17. ncaissie:

“And then when all these people enter the real world, they will bring their Macs along.”

Wrong! LOL sorry dude but you don’t bring your computer to work. 1. For security reasons. 2. Because 9 times out of 10 companies prefer to standardize hardware for ease of tech support.

Mac OS is shit. I have tried mac os a few times and can’t stand it. It is designed to give the user no control of the hardware or the OS. I kall it “the OS for dummies” People like me prefer to be able to do things like registry hacks.
The Mac OS does get bloated over time just like windows. Only, with windows I have the control to slow that process down.

    The Steam service sucks also.

  18. ncaissie:

“I think it has gotten bigger by now ”
No doubt. With Ms dick in it.

  19. ncaissie:

Interviewer: And then what did you see?

  20. ncaissie:

  21. ncaissie:

Der, fuck I’m not stupid. The point I was making is that even a HUGE digital game distribution service that Steam is, is now on board with offering Mac games. That is fairly significant in my view. I never said that Mac was or is rivaling PC gaming, there is no need to get over sensitive. Shit, I’m using a PC to write this ;)

Your fanboy day-dreams are no reflection of reality.
Windows has (by far) the bulk of OS everywhere, from desktop to laptop to notepad.
Soon (within the next 5 – 10yrs) to be significant if not dominant in the phone market too, I expect.

  26. Spideydog:

HH said: “Soon (within the next 5 – 10yrs) to be significant if not dominant in the phone market too, I expect.”

Sorry m8, I don’t see that. That is optimistic at best. Zune is a failure and was supposed to rival iPod. Windows mobile will be the same. I just don’t see it I’m afraid.

You are a very loyal MS customer though ;) I will give you that.

  27. phranctoast:

I agree Mac isn’t the computer to own if you’re a gamer, but most of the population isn’t one.

My biggest problem with Mac is that everything is proprietary.

  28. Roca.:

“Your fanboy day-dreams are no reflection of reality.”

everything to you is based on fanboyism huh? must be because of personal experience.

anyways…..I have said many times that I prefer Windows over any other OS….but while in college I see that most ppl went for mac for their laptops than PC…..and If you want to be such a dick and be a MS ass kisser mother fucker, then let me make your day by also letting you know that most of those Mac users also had your “precious” Windows OS installed on their Mac Laptop. Business ppl still use Windows mainly because that’s the standard company OS but now days computer savy consumers go for Mac laptops than PC because it performs better, battery last longer, its faster and you can easily run windows on it

Apple dominates the high-end laptop market, You can find (easy google search) market research showing they own 91% of the $1,000+ laptop market (if you want the link let me know dipshit)

Now I understand why Ballmer showed how big you ass whole has gotten from taking it from MS

  29. Roca.:

    We will see.
Whether or not they end up dominant they are (just as happened with gaming) set to grab a very significant chunk of the business.

I really have no personal interest in Microsoft at all, I just thionk a lot of the comment about them is prejudice and ludicrously ill-informed.

  43. gravufo:

Honestly, anyone who actually likes using Windows should be DAMN happy that Apple is having an increase in its popularity. Why, you may ask? Reasons are simple.

    1. Microsoft will have to come out with very new concepts and will have to optimize EVERYTHING they want to release to make sure it becomes a success (they want to regain the market, that’s the point of a business)
    2. More users on Macs = More interest in hackers + virus creators to target Mac users.
    3. Previous point means less viruses and hackers for Windows.
    4. Apple will start sucking, because its monopoly will not (and never will) be able to handle hacks/viruses. My friend actually was able to reset a Mac password in less than 2 minutes by logging onto a console, mounting the disk, removing one simple configuration file, and BAM.

Basically, the market HAS to go around from Apple to Microsoft and so on, that is how things improve. Don’t think I’m a Microsoft lover, because I’m not. I simply think everything they make is much more logic to use than stupid Macs that don’t let you do anything (yes, I am a Mac hater though.)

In the end, smart users will have three operating systems on their computer: Linux (the best), Microsoft (the usable), Mac (the pretty much useless).

Hate as much as you want, everyone/everything have advantages and flaws. Just pick what fits you the most.

PS: The problem with the market is that most people are plain ignorant/stupid (that is a sad fact). Thus, Apple wins in this because everything it makes is for extremely basic stuff and mainly doesn’t let you do anything with it.

As for people saying Mac performance is better, that is only partially true. Learn OS architecture and you will see where Mac fails hardly.

  44. ncaissie:

“In the end, smart users will have three operating systems on their computer: Linux (the best), Microsoft (the usable), Mac (the pretty much useless).”
LMAO sure dude. I know plenty about computers and have no use for linux. It is said about the mac “the pretty much useless”

Why not use the more supported OS with plenty of software choices? When you grow up and get into a real job you will see that when you need to support those stupid end users your linux skills are useless.
If you’re so smart why not work on optimizing windows yourself? Or go work at MS and fix it for them?

  45. ncaissie:

It is said about the mac
    should be
It is as you said about the mac LOL

  46. Roca.:

don’t forget Google is on the rise….and just like apple, Google has a pretty impressive amount of followers.

just because some here ‘prefer’ Windows doesnt mean Mac OS is ‘useless’….so how useless can it be when it is a fact that that Windows 7 was inspired mostly by Mac OS, Here are 2 quotes from MS:

-”One of the things that people say an awful lot about the Apple Mac is that the OS is fantastic, that it’s very graphical and easy to use.”

-”"What we’ve tried to do with Windows 7–whether it’s traditional format or in a touch format–is create a Mac look and feel in terms of graphics.”

so the ‘useless OS’ inspired Windows 7….not so useless after all. now here are 10 features Windows 7 copied from Mac OS:

1- Taksbar makeover: Dock look and feel
    2- Jump List: Dock menus
    3- Aero Peek: Exposé
    4- Files Previews
    5- Gadgets: Widgets
    6- Sticky Notes: Stickies

  62. ncaissie:

LOL I figured you meant when they started work they would get their employers to buy MACs.
Macs suck for most businesses. They may be ok for video editing but that is nothing any good PC can’t do. No (true)professional would use the OS default editor.

  63. RomasantaMC:

“Mac is a bit expensive but when it comes to performace Windows is way behind…..I think Mac has captured the Laptop and Table PC market.”

Yeah, I agree they suck for most businesses, I just see that changing eventually.

  67. arckain:

I’m definitely excited about the Chrome OS, but I’m not totally sold on it yet. Has anyone installed it on a virtual machine yet? Reactions?

  68. gravufo:

@ncaissie I was talking about home computers man, of course in businesses no one would EVER put anything more than one OS (although the servers at my school run both Linux and Windows server). My point was that experienced users can enjoy positive parts of every OS. Try to learn how to read between lines mate. I might not have a job yet, but I’m far from dumb.

BTW, I help “those dumb people” every day, and I get payed for it. Trust me, my Linux skills HAVE helped me, even in fixing Windows/Mac problems. Live CDs of Linux are more useful than you think.

PS: Windows is closed source, and I will not go into the junk code they made…Anyways I don’t like programming just for the heck of it…I’m into hardware, I’ll let other people enjoy the long pages of code :)

  69. gravufo:

I have a feeling Google will soon become a very major OS company. Their Chrome OS has to be excellent though so it can make a big impact on industry. Honestly, I wouldn’t mind having another company in the war. More companies = more competition = better OSes = Better prices!

  70. ncaissie:

“I might not have a job yet, but I’m far from dumb.”

    Then

“BTW, I help “those dumb people” every day, and I get payed for it. ”

WTF? Dude you contradict yourself in the same post.

Not many people use duel boot pc’s at home either.

  71. gravufo:

Sorry, I admit that wasn’t very clear. I mean it’s not a job…it’s a very simple side-”job”… anyways hard to explain but I don’t consider it a job since it’s all but official.

And as for dual boot PCs, not many people know how to use them…especially when it comes to GRUB. Some people dare to try and simply fail because they get all lost with the different Loaders and such…Else, dual boot is simply awesome…You can boot into Linux when you feel like trying out server stuff or whatever, Windows when you want to play, Mac to do some video/image editing and such.

Obviously, I don’t do all of this. I only have Linux on a live-cd and Windows installed on my disk. The reason for that is my small hard disk…My old big one died a few months ago, the head was defective and data was not recoverable. I’m currently waiting for prices to drop on SSDs and for the capacities to grow bigger.

  77. Roca.:

    @Liquid
    what did tell you? lol

  78. Saber_HAHAha:

How about this: Release a slim Xbox 360 that has a wireless connector, have it be cool running, reduce the failure rate down to near-nilch, and stop with the lame excuses involving disk-scratching (moving the console is NOT the problem).

If a multi-billion dollar technology leader can’t go ahead and do that…

Then they shouldn’t be a multi-billion dollar technology leader.

  79. phranctoast:

That picture of ballmer is great. What do you suppose they asked him?

-what’s do xbot’s believe the failure rate of the 360 is and what is their IQ?

  80. Liquid:

  82. Ivan_PSP:

Steven Ballmer should be be fired. While Microsoft is tumbling his fortune is getting bigger.

  83. gunstar:

” Is Microsoft becoming irrelevant over difficulty embracing change?”
    Yup

” Even Microsoft’s video game competitor Sony is getting into the mix by holding a large presence at Google’s recent I/O conference. Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google told Sir Howard Stringer, CEO of Sony that Google has always looked towards Sony for innovation on the stage.”

Cassete player, Walkman, Compact Disk, Discman, Handycam, Playsation etc. Sony has a good track record of innovation amidst changing times.
