E3 2010: Microsoft dates Kinect and new Xbox 360 ‘slim’
Microsoft just officially unveiled the Kinect along with the rumored Xbox 360. The company went further by giving a launch date for both devices.
It came as no surprise when Microsoft unveiled the new Xbox 360 model I reported yesterday. The model will have Wi-Fi support (802.11N), and comes with a 250GB harddrive. The Xbox 360 “slim†will look exactly as shown in the leaked pictures from yesterday.
Apparently, this $300 model will replace all Xbox 360 models. Microsoft is looking to clear out old stock with a price drop to the Arcade ($150) and Elite ($250). The Xbox 360 slim will ship to retail this week.
Microsoft also announced that Kinect will be launching November 4 later this year. No price point was announced to refute or support the alleged rumors of a $100 to $150 price tag.
The majority of the press conference was dominated by the Kinect. The company did show off Gears of War 3, Halo: Reach and Kingdoms near the beginning of the press event. Look forward to my in-depth overview of the Kinect game lineup later tonight.

I thought the keynote was boring, even worse than the joke Nintendo presented last time. Everybody was impressed with Rising, but that’s not even exclusive so who cares. Gears was more of the same, and Halo was the usual garbage. Next was an hour of Kinect with some of the most awkward presentations Ive ever seen. Then they tried to buy off the audience with free xboxes lol.
Kaz Hirai should just walk on stage tomorrow and say “Resistance 3, Infamous 2, The Last Guardian, Little Big Planet 2, Killzone 3, Gran Tourismo 5, DC Universe Online, The Agency, The Agent. That’s it folks – Thanks for coming.” And then proceed to walk off. Sony is already popping champagne right now.

Yeah I’m obviously partial to the PS3, but the over all reaction to Kinect seems to be disappointment.
The majority of the show was just, reskinned versions of popular games.

I was quite sceptical about kinect but after watching the presentation I truely believe that this will be a console seller. I can see this appealing to such a wide market. The whole concept of facial recognition and voice command will be a revolution in home entertainment.

The new halo looks great. Looks like it has a pretty decent single player as we all know the beta is looking pretty fucking amazing.
The new forza looks great and so does Gears and Fable. All AAA.

The games on Kinect looked geared towards the younger audience as they are obviously wanting to tap that demographic. I do like the voice control and hand control of the navigation. And Forza looks really cool with it also.

over an hour and a half on Kinetic…that was painful for hardcore fans to watch, I’m not bashing on it (since some ppl here likes to take it personal) as have the same opinion about Move and I thik it will bring the same amount of shovelware for the PS3..I really hope Sony doesnt spend as much time as MS did talking about Kinetic…(I’m afraid they will) but at least we have a pretty good chunk of announcements before E3.
I see Move as a additional feature for some hardcore games like Socom…no way in hell I will play it with Move 24/7 but it can be nice to try just for the heck of it.

seriously these constant complaints that Kinect is basically just an eye toy rip off is like saying the iphone or motorola droid is just a rip off of the classic nokia 1100. or the PS3 is just a rehash of the original playstation. This e3 presentation shows how it is so much more than anything on the market at the moment. What they were missing however was to show how kintect could be used in conjunction with a controller to enhance the traditional hardcore game experience. Hopefully more will come over the next few months. The other thing is was trying to figure out is there seemed to be a time delay of over 1 sec between the on stage person moving and the screen showing that movement.
I wonder what Kingdom is going to be – coming from crysis it should look incredible, whatever it is.
Honestly, comparing Sony Move to Kinect is pointless – it is most likely more accurate, but lacking in every other aspect. Move is going to do bugger all to expand the PS3 market. Kinect on the other hand could attract people who are not interested in a games console and see the Wii as just a toy, but like the implementation of fitness games that actually teach you to improve your movement and posture, or can actually teach you to dance.

Star wars game is looking good although it’s a little slow on the movement wise. If I heard right the game is 100% kinect so controlless.
In all honesty, games like dance dance revolution is just playing step with plastic mattress and sometimes you missed the 4 directional arrow etc. What I saw in Harmonix studio truly redefines dancing/music games to a new level. Top Choreographer and music teaches you how to dance. I am not saying that I will buy it so I can be a dancer, but my daughter would love to learn from it.
The video chat is cool too I mean sure ps3 eye toy can do that too, can it? Put it simply getting Kinect are not only for game but for dashboard too include movie, music, sports with trivia etc, social and taking picture all in one. I buy kinect not for the game but just the living room entertainment alone justifies the cost. If and I say if, the future is controless, than rechargeable battery is no longer an argument.

Well I must admit the new 360 looks really good. I’m tempted just for the fact that Kinect will not need additional power for the new 360. To be honest this is the best time to pick up a 360 because all the old models and going on Fire Sale. I might just pick up an Arcade since the Hard Drive are removable. LOL
Anyways I speculate that Kinect will cost $50 to $100 because a bundled Kinect with a 360 will be $350 to $400. I can’t see Microsoft going higher then that.

The only game on kinetic that had me remotely excited was the star wars game.
Kotaku doused any excitement there. They called it an on rails game similar to rebel assault. The limitations of kinetic are showing already.
I guess the star wars lightsaber battle with Proper motion control still hasn’t been announced.

Yes, PSluts like to forget the fact that PS3 was overpriced for the general market in the first place, that people would have bought a slim model regardless, that the new 360 is practically half the size of the original, is quiet, has the GPU and CPU integrated on a 45nm die, is more power efficient, produces less heat, has two more USB drives, is touch sensitive, and still has last gen BC (something which Sony has yet to bring back to current PS3 models, and has adamantly stated they never will).
The new model doesn’t cost less because Microsoft isn’t forced to price it less as Sony was with the slim. If 360 was still third in total sales as PS3 currently is, things might be different, as it is, they still maintain a comfortable enough lead and enough demand to maintain their current pricing structure.

This is a first party game and hasn’t even gotten a name yet, that is how early into development they are and won’t be out until 2011.

Kotaku got confirmation from a creditable source that Sony will be announcing Sly Collection (which means Sly 4 is on the way), Patapon 3 and a new game that most PS fans have been waiting for. I won’t say what game it is because I don’t want to spoil the announcement (but you and I have been waiting for it to happen).

I think MS isn’t trying to make Kenetic for their existing audience or anyone here for that matter. It’s obviously geared wholeheartedly towards the Wii’s audience.
Even the E3 show was divided into two separate sections. The first half of the show was dedicated to the games people are interested in, than the show did a definitive 180 degree turn, into a completely different demographic.
Hardcore (for lack of a better word) gamers were expecting at least something Natal related that would appeal to them. But it never came.
I think the fact that they went as far as to use a different color for the Natal games boxes, really highlights that the games are not for the typical 360 fan.

Yeah there was a Star Wars game. I think it was a pretty early build, so it’s hard to say how it will end up.
The Forza demo was by far the most impressive thing shown. Being able to actually walk around the car and zoom in on things was really cool.

I only caught bits and pieces of Ubisoft and EA’s. I learned the hard way not to watch them all.
Ubisoft’s show last year was brutal. James Cameron was babbling about Avatar for 20 minutes straight. Also Joel Mccale doesn’t make a good host. I like his show – The Soup – but he sucks as a host.

E3 Report Cards:
M$: D-
They at least showed the usually suspects: Halo, Gears, and Fable. After that through, the show took a nose dive. Natal was a massive disappointment. Every piece of Natal software was a casual title. Not only that, but blatant copies of other games.
The show was painfully boring and dry. If I was in the audience, I would have thrown a tomato at that douche host they have.
Nintendo: B+
They had the best momentum. It was just surprise announcement after surprise announcement.
Sony: B+
Less surprise announcements, but better over all games. The amount of 3D and Move compatible titles was impressive.

Personally I must say I find Sony dig at Nintendo and Microsoft to be quite childish and distasteful. Sony has hit rock bottom when you resort to publicly dissing the competition when your in last place and it`s Sony fault and no one else`s. Their games should speak for themselves instead of them crying about it. I came to see games not to see Sony act desperate. it was very pathetic.

I for one am quite pleased with Sony’s behaviour, as it not only keeps Microsoft on their heels, while at the same time people’s perception abt Sony was changing a LOT which was far more dangerous to Nintendo and Microsoft, so with the help of Kevin Butler, Sony is once again coming off as arrogant and will be hopefully put back to the place it deserves..
3ds has really caught my attention with 3d without glasses stuff (as i already wear specs), i m looking forward to it, might even buy one..
So i feel ninetendo won this years e3, while Sony and Microsoft come at second

I really don’t know what there is to argue about. It’s almost unfair to the 360 only owners.
Sony had hands down the better show of the two.
Casual stuff aside, (because both covered this well with Kinetic and Move) Sony showed up with the most representation in hardcore games (my biggest focus). Try as you might, but this is a straight up fact and arguing against it makes you look like a fool.

3D dims the image. Shutter glasses/polaroid glasses dim the image.

I’m only speaking for myself here… MAG and WKC seemed to be underwhelming in both reviews and sales… are they really awesome games to brag about? I’m not so sure. God of War 3 was excellent, but short lived… I donated it recently to the library here… beyond that, I’ll eventually rent Heavy Rain but could care less about Mod Nation… though I might give Sly Collection and LBP2 a shot later this year… for the most part I see more interesting things happening on the multiplatform front than I do the exclusive front, but that’s just me I guess.
To me, PSN Plus was the most important news from the Sony conference, and I will be one of the first to try it later this month… other than that, I have already preordered Kinect from Amazon, based mainly upon OS nav via voice/gesture recognition, not games.

I could be an ass I say that I dont give a shit about Mass Effect 2, Splinter Cell Conviction and Alan Wake which is selling horrobly.
Mass Effect seems to me like it was the short lived game here as God of War came out months after Mass Effect 2 (which is out on 2 platforms – hence multiplatform game) but still managed to become the best selling game of 2010 between 360 and PS3.
MAG has sold more than a million and I bet you more ppl are playing it right now than the ppl play Splinter Cell. Multiplatform is ok as they will be also available on the PS3 that’s why I only mentioned the exclusive which are the game you “can’t” get anywhere other than PS3.
counting “real exclusive” the 360 have 1 (Alan Wake) vs 6 from Sony.
but I could use the same excuse as you and claim I dont give a shit about Mass Effect, Alan Wake or Splinter Cell..
and a simple press of a “button” is far more convinient than waving your arms. I pre-order Move for the “games”. Socom 4 and Sorcery seems to play flawless with Move.

Exxclusive games library, sony takes it, hands down
Online gameplay sony takes it, cuz its free
Overall online content, with psn+, LIVE just edges out PSN, as it overall has more…
Motion controls, tie as kinect overall is the more “innovative” control schem but Move just works better

For one, Sony has been in this gig a full massively successful generation longer… but there is nothing “paltry” or “casual” about Crackdown 2, Halo: Reach, Fable 3, Codename Kingdoms, Mass Effect 3, XCom, Champions Online, or Gears of War 3.

As you can see, the hardcore lineup isn’t suffering. Kinect is still a nascent system tech, so they are starting with simple things. As time goes on we are likely to see more hardcore implementation, especially next gen with the next iteration. This is just a start. Sixaxis and EyeToy didn’t work out so well for Sony, so they are implementing Move to see if it does any better. No need to doom either Kinect or Move until more time has passed.
