E3 2010: Nintendo goes retro with Zelda, Kirby, Metroid, Donkey Kong, Goldeneye

June 15, 2010

This year’s E3 has been a mixture of new hardware and software, but for Nintendo, it was all about the games. However, many of them have a distinctly retro feel.

While Microsoft was unveiling its new Xbox 360 and Kinect, and Sony was detailing Move, it’s all about the games for Nintendo at E3 this year.

The Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword was the first game to be revealed. A new Zelda game was expected, and Nintendo duly delivered. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look all that impressive at this stage.

Then came the Goldeneye 007 remake for the Wii. Apart from updated graphics, and Daniel Craig replacing Pierce Brosnan as Bond, everything looks very similar to the original.

Then came a long-awaited return for Kirby with Kirby: Epic Yarn. I actually really like the look of this game. Kirby can be nothing but cute, and it looks as though that has been managed alongside some innovative gameplay.

Metroid: Other M and Donkey Kong Returns closed this section of Nintendo’s press briefing. The new Metroid title doesn’t really appeal to me personally, but Donkey Kong Returns does despite, or maybe because of, its very retro look and feel.

This was a strong showing for Nintendo in terms of games. However, I get the feeling there’s a little too much reminiscing going on, and that could dampen innovation a little. Apart from the Nintendo 3DS, obviously.

Wow an actual article about Nintendo’s E3 conference this year. Not a great one but I’ll take it.

  2. Barnabe Jones:

I was pleasantly surprised by their show. They did a great job.

I hope Zelda just had technical difficulties on stage. I like the cell shaded look, and the motion controls seemed interesting.. if they work.

    @BJ
at least it was a real demonstration and not faked.

  4. CAD:

Well it’s official I’m getting a Nintendo 3DS. The reports say the screen looks awesome.

Hey did Gamer Blorge even notice the first mass market portable 3D gaming system to be announced at E3? Oh wait yes they did give a whole sentence to it at the bottom of the article. Sorry my bad. I didn’t notice it!

  6. Andrew_DS:

  8. Roca.:

I think what surprise us about Nintendo’s conference what that they revealed many of the game that made them popular

  9. Barnabe Jones:

Andrew, enjoy PSP quality graphics. We’ve been enjoying them for quite some time now.

  10. Roca.:

    lol

  11. CAD:

Andrew I fully agree dave is always going on about Glassless 3D and lo and behold it happpens to a lesser degree and he hardly say anything about it.

    @CAD
Not for nothing, but unless you’re there the 3Ds is one of those things that you need to try out for yourself. Same goes for 3D altogether in games.

I’m sure Best Buy or whatever your large retailer is will demo stuff soon.

CAD, at least Dave gives it lip service… Mike doesn’t even touch upon it.

even though Nintendo announced some great games.
I still felt like “meh” (until Donkey Kong was revealed)….here is my ‘opinion’ why based on what I saw.

    *GoldenEye
looks dated and seems like the novelty from the original is gone

    *Zelda
I can’t deny how awesome Zelda is (OoT is my favorite game – debatable w/FF7) but the game looks the same as it did 12 years ago..and “Motion-only” doesnt help the cause.

    *Donkey Kong Country
well this is a game I’ve been waiting for years, so far so good.

    *Kirby
seems like they complete change the the style of the game and went super casual with this one…. some nice art style but it still looks like a DS game if you ask me.

I do recognize the effort by Nintendo to get back its old fans and overall I think they had a great show with great quality Nintendo franchises reveals.

I can’t find the stupid conference. Everyone I find is only 17 minutes long.
I’m not going to look for it piece by piece. That’s just stupid.

  16. CarlB:

Here you go… nice and organized too:
