Alan Wake 2 could arrive quickly

June 23, 2010

Alan Wake 2 could be on the way, and it’s unlikely to take five years to arrive as the original did. That is, if Microsoft actually wants a sequel.

Alan Wake took a long time to arrive, and it’s a game which has somewhat split opinion. However, enough people love it that a sequel is surely a must. However, before that happens, there are downloadable episodes on the way.

Once these have been released, work on a sequel could begin, as Head of Franchise Development at Remedy, Oskari Hakkinen, recently told IGN. He said:

The game is kind of season one, it’s the complete story but it continues into two DLCs that will bridge to the potential season two. These allow us to go a little bit crazy with the game mechanics and with the fiction as well. As you probably remember from the Max Payne games as well, we did these dream-like sequences – these kind of nightmarish things. We’re playing a lot with that even more.

They [Microsoft] have been interested in more downloadable content and doing further episodes. Originally we agreed that we’d only do two. Microsoft are interested and are throwing the idea around of more episodes, but you know the size of our studio. We’re a small team. We wouldn’t really be able – if we were to confirm a sequel at some point, which we’d like to do relatively soon.

At some point we’ve got to go into full production of the sequel if we get that confirmed. Max Payne 1 took us also five years to make. Max Payne 2 took us 18 months. I think we’d be looking at something of a similar cycle.

So Alan Wake 2 could arrive around the 2011 holidays or the following summer, depending on how long it takes Microsoft to actually give the green light to a sequel.

Would Alan Wake fans prefer more DLC episodes or a full sequel? Or both?

    neither. . .the game is shit

  3. GT5er:

    The restrictive qualities of DVD at work…?

    M$ should put an eight-track player in their next junker.

  4. harry sachz:

    You’ve played it Liquid?

    It’s a really intriguing story, but if they do make a sequel they really need to add more variety of enemies.

  5. Liquid:

    harry

    no im just laying flamebait xD

  6. Barnabe Jones:

    I haven’t played it. But I think it looks like the best 360 exclusive this year. I’ll get to check it out at some point.

  7. Liquid:

    cool, i havent had much time for games lately, i spend nearly everyday training for the army. . .i want to get RDR doh wen i start gaming proper again, im playing through the orange box again. half life 2 is one of the best games ever, such a good storyline and the atomosphere is tense.

  8. oldschool1987:

    It’s a decent enough game, hyped up a bit much though.

    More pbots in a 360 topic

    Go figure.

    @Harry

    Agreed, i would also love it, if the sequel is geared towards us Adult gamers (more blood and gore, less freaking me out from behind stuff lol)

  13. ViRuS:

    I believe there is at least 2 episodes for DLC, from what I’ve heard.

    The game was goodbut it got a little cheesy in the last 2 chapters. Not really spooky for Alan when he has his friends holding his hand. Enjoyed Dead Space more.

  14. twilight:

    I don’t tend to like too many T rated games but there have been a few exceptions. I like all of the bad stuff. Lol.

  15. harry sachz:

    @ Toshi,

    Definitely would be a plus if they did that. What annoys me a little is how quickly the batteries die. They should let Alan use Duracells or something.

  16. phranctoast:

    Lol@Harry.
    Hardly good product placement huh? Does it come with a disclaimer. Please note energizer batteries don’t really suck this bad. Lol.

    I’d love to know the legal ties this game has with Microsoft other than publishing rights. Remedy owns the IP. Could Alan Wake sigma be on the horizon?

  17. Roca.:

    Remedy says Microsoft wants it to continue to focus on episodic DLC for Alan Wake before they move on to the sequel.

  18. harry sachz:

    @ phranctoast,

    Speaking of product placement and Alan Wake, why did i see a Verizon commercial in the game??? We don’t even have Verizon down here.

    I heard that Remedy may put this game onto PC. It’s worth a look if you don’t have a 360.

  19. harry sachz:

    @ Roca,

    I thought they weren’t going to do anything after the next 2 DLC episodes?

  20. Roca.:

    @Harry
    don’t ask me, I copied and pasted the comment from a recent article.

    my friend beat the game in two days

  21. phranctoast:

    @Harry
    Did they really? Adverts should definitely be region specific. I get annoyed seeing Dairy Queen/Arby’s and Sonic commerical on Long Island.

    but how many Outback Steakhouse adverts could you take in one game huh….. ;)

    If it made it to the PC/PS3 I would more than likely get it. I’d wait on it though for the right price like I still am with Darksiders and Borderlands (both well received games)

  22. harry sachz:

    Yeah I’ve got to get into Borderlands soon also. The brother in law brought his copy over a few months back, which is why you can see I have 1% of the trophies. I’ll have to scab it off him soon.

    @ roca,

    That’s possible. There are 6 episodes which take about 90 – 120 minutes to get through each. I got through GOW3 in 2 sittings.

  23. Roca.:

    @Harry
    what do you think about the $99 XBL GOLD family pack deal…is a great value if you kids or other family members living with you. could Gold for other members have been done any other way?

  24. ncaissie:

    “I got through GOW3 in 2 sittings.”
    What did you think?

  25. phranctoast:

    I don’t recall how many actual sittings GOW3 took. My save file says 12+ hours. I reran through it again to get the godly possessions and I was at the Labyrinth at around 9 hours. I also never played it on Easy. Just Normal (Spartan) and Hard (Titan).

    Games that I need to re play for a higher difficulty trophy get put on the back burner for when I feel like getting into them again.

  26. Roca.:

    I finished it on Titan in about 16hrs
    and of course I spent many hours more just straight up “dying”

  27. harry sachz:

    @ roca,

    Personally it doesn’t interest me as my wife isn’t a gamer, but I can see the situation where a family with for example 3 kids would want their own so they can play online using their own gamertag etc.
