DFC claims Xbox 360 is on “downside of its lifecycle”
Is the Xbox 360 now on the “downside of its lifecycle?” DFC Intelligence thinks so, although it does concede the Microsoft console has “some good years left.”
Don’t you just love games industry analysts? They certainly make my job a lot easier, as that headline is more than I could have asked for today. Whether the thinking behind the eye-catching headline has any merit or not is another matter.
According to Gamasutra, DFC made its prediction in a monthly brief recently, stating:
In terms of changing the overall video game hardware platform market share we see [Kinect] having a negligible impact. The Xbox 360 has some good years left, but the platform is clearly on the downside of its lifecycle … Microsoft is putting almost all its eggs into the Kinect as a way to appeal to the ‘casual’ consumer and expand its user base. Unfortunately, based on what we have seen, DFC continues to feel that Microsoft is going to struggle to expand beyond its core audience.
That’s a hell of a leap in my opinion. Sure, no one knows if Kinect is going to succeed, but even if it doesn’t why does that immediately signal the end for the Xbox 360? If by “downside of its lifecycle” DFC means more than halfway through then possibly so, but even that isn’t guaranteed.
DFC ends its report by predicting the Xbox 360 and Wii will see significant falls in sales in the years ahead, while the PS3 will head upwards. But that still won’t be enough to see the Sony console end ahead of Nintendo’s effort come the end of this console generation.

No crytal ball is needed. Xbox360 will be the dominant system this holiday. The Ps3 sales have gone up quite a bit but the Xbox360 still leads in worldwide sales. The Xbox360 lead will be expanded courtesy of the Kinect and the new $199 Xbox360 slim that’s coming out later this year.

Last time I checked PS3 was last in the console race so maybe all the ps3rd fanboys should worry more about their own console and what went wrong by letting MS take such a big chunk of their 120 million fanbase.
I’d like to see a new console in the next 2 or 3 years but very happy for now.

well seeing as it has reached the half way mark of its planned life cycle then it is obviously on the downside, just like the PS3 will hit its downside in a year or so. I suspect the 360 will hit its highest sales peak over the next 3 years largely due to kinect and then drop off fairly sharply due to the arrival of a new console, whilst the PS3 will continue a steady sales increase as well and then start to slow down and drop in about 3-4 years (however much slower than the 360). THe biggest looser will be the wii, as nintendo start to focus on the portable market. By the end of 2014 we will see the wii at approx 100 million, the 360 and PS3 at about 80-90 million each.

Microsoft has cut Xbox prices all the way through the gen.
The really interesting thing is that they have never felt the need to cut prices really aggressively.

I understand what you mean about the production costs. Microsoft is definetely in a better position to lower the cost of their product then their competitor. Microsoft is still in the process of determining the price of Kinect. It’s tentatively priced at $150 but the final price
could be less.
All companies are allergic to price cutting. The point is Microsoft has put themselves in a position to lower the cost of their system if necessary to stay competitive. The same can not be said about Sony. Sony has not broken even yet with the cost of manufacturing the Ps3 system yet. Even though they are getting close to doing this, they are still losing money on every Ps3 system sold.

They say and this is a direct quote “are targeting profitability in the game business in fiscal year 2010″.
They did not say they have reached profitability so it’s pretty safe to say they are not there yet.

Software sales for the PS3 are up but PSP has been such a disaster that overall Sony’s software sales are down.

As for Sales data on software.
This should be interesting. We should be seeing MS’s fiscal report by the end of July/Early August.
Then we can compare their last fiscal year to Sony’s last fiscal year as far as Software sales are concerned (We all know by now that Sony has been beating them hardware wise for some time now).

Well, it means we can continue to get things like PSN+ and others from Sony as they are still behind in total sales worldwide (five million hardware, 110 million software so far this gen) and still want to catch up sometime before the beginning of next gen. The only way they can do this is by continuing to entice potential customers with things XBL doesn’t have at present. It also means we can expect things like ESPN, game shows (just saw sentuamessage for the first time tonight, not bad), and other features added from Microsoft if they want to stay ahead.
PS3 wouldn’t have been so inexpensive at present if it was more successful at a higher price point… neither 360 or PS3 would have nearly as many features at present if they were not in direct competition with each other… and we probably wouldn’t be seeing Move or Kinect without Wii’s phenomenal success.
The bottom line is, a console’s success, or even lack thereof, has a lot do “with us as gamers”.

I have been smoking for too long. I have to alcohol bath the heatsinks on my CPU and GPU about once every couple months to get the layer of residue off of them. My wife is also a smoker, so multiply that by 2.

Back to the topic in hand. I think it’s pretty obvious that the 360 has passed its halfway point and I for one think its rivalry with ps3 made this one of the best console generations in my memory because of the fierce competition.

Pubs are easy now it’s been banned in pubic places but they were always my downfall before (I once stopped for 2.5yrs and on a night out with some smoking mates, a few pints….well you know how it goes).
Cost of the things (legit) are a big help too, when I realised how much a month it had come to I just thought f*ck that, I’d rather start saving that and spending it on the sort of stuff I want instead of turning my cash to ash.
Stick with it, you can do it.

I predict a Brasil/Argentina World Cup if Argentina beats out Germany, as Spain or Paraguay i feel won’t be enough to stop the Argentine attack, not sure how closely you guys follow soccer, but during the Mexico (who are not a bad team at all, just had a bad game, 9 time Gold Cup holders which i believe is the most) game, Argentina managed a 7 one touch pass series with out mexico getting near the ball…as you said, Argentine’s attack is amazing…
Argentina’s Defense is really solid, from the midfield on up but they got some holes on their back lines, as evident by hernandez’s goal in the Mexico/Argentina game, i mean the kid got past two Argentines to get that sucker in.
As far as Germany, i’m not really sure or caught up on their abilities, playstyle, but from what i’ve seen…it’s going to be a real good game, Germany has their work cut out for them, as Argentina has yet to lose a game, whereas Germany has 1 loss…but, stats really mean nothing in any type of Final’s match…

Trailer Park Boys is one great show! Everyone of those characters was perfect. From Ricky and his piss poor grammar, to J-Rock wanting to be the white rapper, all the way to Leahey wanting to still act like a cop. I even missed Corey and Trevor when they left. You have to love how Julian always has a rum and coke in his hand, even when driving.

Again, Sony is likely more competitive now than it would have been if PS3 had met launch expectations for sales numbers. PS3 gamers are continuing to get more features offered for free that Microsoft has been able to charge for because Sony needs to catch up to 360′s total sales numbers, hopefully sometime before the end of this gen. In turn Microsoft is also adding more features as Sony “closes the gap”.
Shareholders aren’t the only ones affected by a console’s sales success, “we as gamers” are too. I would say it’s better that Sony hasn’t done as well as originally expected with PS3, as “we as gamers” have seen a ton of benefits from this so far, and will likely continue to. Shareholders maybe not as much.

Do you what blu ray drive does? Allows blu ray discs. That means no more games the size of last generation. You can have much more on it. God of War 3 is a big example of this.

HH, if by “very good” you mean Universal Acclaim on metacritic, which you referenced, then it has 9. 360 only has one more. The thing is, there are a lot more great games that don’t have that rating on both 360 and PS3, at least in my opinion; not to mention that being exclusives, they are different, and each will appeal more to certain gamers.
Yes, 360 has about 100 more games with “generally favorable reviews”, but once you get past a couple hundred games with favorable reviews on both consoles, it really doesn’t matter as much, especially considering the latest lineups.
