Sony: PS3 to be only console with Hulu Plus in 2010

July 15, 2010

Sony: PS3 to be only console with Hulu Plus in 2010 Yesterday Sony officially announced the new Hulu Plus service for the PS3. It was rumored that Sony would be the first to provide the service by Bloomberg. It appears that is indeed the case judging from Sony’s announcement.

In a recent press release Sony announced that Hulu Plus, a subscription based service, will be available for an early preview starting yesterday to selected members of PSN+. However, all PSN members will gain access to Hulu Plus in the coming months when it officially launches.

Sony writes:

Hulu Plus will deliver a library of high-definition (HD) content including full seasons of popular TV shows and blockbuster movies from nearly 150 leading content companies. Content on Hulu Plus is complementary to the more than 23,000 movies and TV episodes already available on the PlayStation®Store.

Jack Tretton, boss man of Playstation stated, “We are delighted to offer the Hulu Plus preview starting today on PlayStation 3 and that PlayStation 3 will be the only console to offer Hulu Plus in 2010.” He then added:

The combination of Hulu’s premium video library and PlayStation®Network’s expanding game and video catalogue further cements PlayStation 3 as the industry’s best entertainment device for all of your content experiences from games, TV shows and movies to live sports, original content and 3D.

The service will cost $9.99 per month and will be an ad-supported service. It’s likely that the service will receive some comparisons to Netflix.

However, there are a few differences and pros/cons to consider:

  • Netflix focuses more on movie rentals, most TV shows are updated seasonally (few exceptions)
  • Hulu focuses on mainly TV shows and updated same day in most cases (some movies are available)
  • Netflix’s TV show selection/seasons are limited
  • Hulu Plus subscribers will have access to all of the seasons for many of the shows (9 full seasons of X-Files)
  • Regular Hulu.com, only offers limited seasons and only last 5 episodes for most shows
  • Hulu Plus will be ad-supported, despite a $9.99 subscription fee. However, regular cable TV service is more expensive and have more ads
  • In comparison to regular cable TV, Hulu Plus does not offer 100% of network TV shows (ex: weak on the Cooking and HGTV shows)

There are both pros and cons to going with Hulu Plus subscription service. Mainly it will depend on whether or not it supports your favorite TV channels and quality of streaming connection. Also, another factor will be if it makes sense to support both cable and Hulu Plus. I suppose, Hulu Plus could be a complementary service on top of cable if you’re unwilling to pay for On Demand.

    I prefer Netflix to Hulu+. We have a premium cable subscription with DVR and On Demand functionality so Hulu doesn’t give me anything new for the most part. For older seasons of TV shows I want to watch I simply stream them on the PS3′s web browser … same with newer movies not on Netflix. Still, between the two services I personally feel Netflix gives the better value proposition.

    But not for canadians. Dammit.

    “For older seasons of TV shows I want to watch I simply stream them on the PS3?s web browser”

    the web browser is a great feature after all, I wonder why some ppl would argue that.

    @b0xel
    it’s only available for PSN+ during the “preview” period, but once the “preview” period is over the service will be available for every single PS3 user at no extra cost.

    I’m not sure if UK will offer Hulu as you guys have iPlayer, Mubu, VidZone and whatnot

    I’ve been less than impressed with Netflix. I’m interested in giving this a try.

    My impression of Netflix:

    Let’s see if they have this? No
    Ok, then let’s try that? No, huh
    Than how about…? Damn it!
    Ok, well maybe…? WTF?

    What do they have then? 80s movies?!?! *turns it off*

    Everyone I’m sure only includes the USA.

    I hear rumours that Zip.ca might offer their services in Canada over consoles but we’ll see if that happens. Rogers On Demand online service siad last year that they would bring the service to consoles and Phones this year but once again that a we’ll see thing as well. Then there is the rumour but I believe Telus said it themselves and even showed what it might look like on the 360 their IPTV service for Canada. So we’ll see if Canada get some love. Currently thought on the 360 there is plenty of shows to watch through the Zune Marketplace but that’s about it.

    So I was in EB Games yesterday and I realized that Wii has a Motion Camera on the market right now. You can play without the controller. It comes with two games called raquet sports and Your Shape Wii. It’s basically Kinect for the Wii. How come no one talks about this?

  12. b0xel:

    because everyone knows the tech behinf kinect is as old as larry kings suspenders.

  13. PSN: johnnynumber5:

    @CAD

    Because no one cares about Kinect?

  14. SW:

    “But not for canadians. Dammit.”

    It never is :)

    But oh well, if I want something like a TV show, it magically gets transferred to me somehow ;)

    The thing I like about Netflix is that I have them send me a few dvd’s, I use handbrake, send them back & rinse and repeat. The fact I can instant stream on my PS3 in my man cave, my fiance on the PS3 in the bedroom and the kids on their Wii is a huge win for about $10/month. Once I’ve watched all the instant streaming stuff I want to watch (we’re fairly new subscribers) I’ll just cancel it. We also use Apple TV to purchase individual TV shows ala carte in addition to the cable DVRs and web streaming sites I mentioned. For me, there is very little value in Hulu+ or Hulu Free for that matter. But, to each his own! In fact, I’d even say that over 80% of shows can be watched the on the cable channels web-sites now. The content is out there for me (tv shows) so for me I have more value in the selection of netflix.

    @cad,

    because it has less game support than ps eye which was fairly none at all.

  18. ncaissie:

    ” It’s basically Kinect for the Wii. How come no one talks about this?”
    Because it is shit just like kinect and eyetoy.

    And for hulu I don’t care. I wouldn’t use it.

    You can’t deny Kinect sucks for gaming

  21. PSN: johnnynumber5:

    @CAD

    You were actually talking about both Kinect and Wii. I got the impression (perhaps my deduction was incorrect) you were saying these Wii games were ripping off Kinect and wanted to know why no one was talking about it. The simple answer was because no one cares about Kinect (or camera gaming in general) partly because Kinect isn’t even out yet and what was shown at E3 was casual garbage. Obviously when I say no one I was talking about actual gamers and not casuals like young children and mother / grandparents. If that makes you ask (very pointedly and derogatory) if I’m “another ignorant PS3 fanboy” that tells me you are in fact a 360 or Wii (likely 360) fanboy. Is that right? To answer the question … nope, not a fanboy.

  22. oldschool1987:

    Actually CAD if you read Johnnys intro comment, you’ll see he ain’t a fanboy of any console. he’s just saying what everyone (minus fanboys) is thinking: That no one gives a fuck about Kinect.

  23. oldschool1987:

    Hey Johnny, in answer to your is CAD a 360 fanboy, well yes he is the biggest one we have now.

  24. CarlB:

    Netflix FTW. I can’t stream either here in Japan, but Netflix still sends DVD’s and BD’s.

  25. b0xel:

    Carl, I didn’t know you live in japan. you lucky SOB, I might join you in a couple of years. ever since I went on vacation there for a couple of months I couldn’t get over how great the atmosphere and the people are there. sure made England seem like a shit hole, hell I even learned japanese(which was a bitch).
    so where exactly in japan do you live?

  26. JofaMang:

    @OS
    I would venture to say that CAD is second to CON in that regard. But at least CAD is more interesting and less of a complete troll. CADCON is dead, long live CAD and CON.

  27. CAD:

    Your a dumb ass. Let me not even bother with you there are enough idiots here already for me to deal with. The last thing Blorge needed was another one.

  32. Liquid:

    CAD

  33. CarlB:

    “so where exactly in japan do you live?”

    Okinawa, not mainland, but still some beautiful beaches, good food, subservient women, and the home of (rex kwon do accent) karate.

    “I’m am totally rocking some kinectimals wood right now.”

    Did you wear out that poor monkey in Eyepet already? Or do you just like variety in your virtual pets?

  34. ncaissie:

    ““I’m am totally rocking some kinectimals wood right now.””
    good thing that Milo wasn’t real.

  35. Pogojoe73:

    As far as Im concerned… both Sony and Hulu can go screw for charging $10 a month to go to a free site on a application that is FREE and USED to work on the PS3 before. It used to work on my system and when my blu ray player stopped recognizing discs and I could only use it to either 1. Watch Hulu or 2. Watch Porn on the internet they took the Hulu availablity away from the system.

    So now the only thing I use my BROKEN OLD OVERHEATED PS3 for that Im sure they knew there was a defect with the system because they created the slim and it works FINE… is 1. Porn or watching movies off my USB Harddrive(dont worry I bought the movies that I converted into MP4.. its legal)

    Maybe make people PAY for Hulu Plus and GIVE FOR FREE regular hulu back to the people that bought and supported Sony PS3 systems

    It is great to finally have Hulu Plus in Sony Playstation 3. This gives us more ways to enjoy our internet-ready gadgets at home connected wirelessly via a wireless router. And speaking of wireless routers, if you’re looking for a good one, I recommend you check out the Netgear Wireless Router for Video and Gaming. You can use this device to connect computers, gaming consoles, notebooks, or wireless printers, and also your networked home theater devices. You can also use this to stream video and music from a USB drive to media players and DLNA TV’s, even without using a computer. Now that’s one powerful wireless router for you.
