Demand for the new Xbox 360 Slim high in UK
On the heel of a great hardware month in the U.S., the Xbox 360 Slim model is selling quite well in the U.K. as well. According to early reports the Xbox 360 Slim is sold out in many retailers.
As expected, the release of the newly redesigned Xbox 360 with a 250GB hard drive gave the platform a boost for the month of June. NPD chart shows a solid boost for the system with 451k sold. The Wii followed closely behind with 422k and PS3 at 304k.
Overall all hardware platforms received a nice boost from May. Red Dead Redemption may have been one of the reasons for the hardware boost as well as the game took the top two spots for both the Xbox 360 and PS3.
Electronic Theatre has done its own search across the U.K. to gauge the demand for the new Xbox 360 Slim. According to the site many retailers are already sold out of the new model despite releasing this past Friday (July 16).
Sales boost will most likely continue for another month before everything gets back to normal.

I’m being serious, most ppl traded their old 360 in for the new one since the new system is not only quieter and more reliable but has built-in wifi and bigger HDD, both which cost some serious cash for propietary add-on.
it doesn’t make sense for ppl to replace a PS3 with a 360…….the only difference between the those 2 HD console are their exclusive and so far most 360 exclusives are available on PC and usually end up on PS3 at some point. plus the fact that the PS3 is a bluray player.

So far the controls are pretty bad. My player can’t get lined up a lot of the time. It stabs beside the enemy and when I try to turn toward the enemy it turns to far and stabs on the other side. And when you walk into the corpse they flop around like balloon dolls or something. CAD can you confirm that is how your blowup girlfriend moves when you kick her? Is this game on the 3shitty?

I think the new 360 looks cool and well a bigger HDD, smaller size, quieter, and runs cooler sounds good to me. I would definately like to get one sooner of later. Hopefully later rather than sooner.
I have until October 5 for the 1 year RRoD replacement warranty on my shitty xbox expires. When my first 360 died the day before my 3 year was up I was ok with it, since I had more than gotten my time with it.. But the console they sent as a replacement… Well I don’t like this one. The best way i can put it is that it just “doesn’t feel right… not durable” and I hope it dies before the 1 year is up.
The way it is going… I have a feeling it will die sometime between now and september. It seems to be showing signs of its impending doom as it is.
It froze up on RDR on me twice. And I noticed that some odd graphical glitches would occur from time to time in the last 20 hours of playing RDR.
If I had the money I would just wait for it to die then buy a new Slim, but i don’t have it right now so I will just have to wait and see what happens.

in order for you to be more accurate with your attacks you have to “lock-on” to enemies by pressing L3 or R3 (not sure which one) – L3/R3 can be pressed by clicking on the left/right analog stick.

I can’t help it that I got back a POS system. Doesn’t surprise me really. It happened to me once with Sony with a PS2, and now it looks like it is happening again with this 360. Its the way companies handle themselves. They don’t give a rat’s ass about repairing systems for free. They don’t make a dime on it, and it costs them money so why would they want to properly fix something?
With my first 360 I am sure it just needed to a reflow on the solder. If it was out of warranty i would have tried it myself, and replaced the X-clamps while I was at it.

I will say one thing about global sales between PS3 and 360.
Everyone knows that the reason why PS3 is catching up is because the 360 has failed to sell very well in japan.
However the new “Slim” 360 seems to have spurred a new interest in Japan. While it is unlikely the new 360 model will boost 360 sales in Japan for an extended period of time it will be an interesting thing to watch.
If more Jp people take interest in the 360 it could be a good deal for everyone in the long run.
More Jp interest in the 360 would mean more games for the 360 in other markets as well. More developers taking interest could lead to new IPs being developed.
So regardless of wether or not sales overtake PS3 its still a win-win situation for everyone

If I were to put this refurb through the same shit I put my last 360 through it would have died on me long ago. I had many 12+ hour gaming sessions with the last one because I KNEW it was well made and would hold out on me. This refurb though… wouldn’t even think about it. I knew it was POS as soon as I opened the box and touched it.
Not that anyone here will believe me, but I have a sixth sense about some electronic devices. I have a very excellent track record of being able to tell if a device will last or not.

That is, to me, a decent list of upgrades.
Built-in ‘N’ class Wi-fi might come in handy one day but seeing as how I use a home network it’s not something I need right now
(but maybe it’s better to have it than not……either way I don’t care.
The console is still costing me less than I would have paid for the Super Elite & a seperate Wi-fi adapter)
It helps that I am confident of getting all my money back when I sell my Super Elite too.

By now we all now that redesigns help boost sales. The 360 should get a nice bump for a while. I don’t think it will impact sales as much as the PS3 redesign though.

I met a few LOTR haters I’m my day. My girlfirend is not a fan but for her I can honesty say it’s the length of the films that is the deterent. Sitting in a movie theatre for over 2.5 hours for some people is way too much. This is why inception will be a rental.

Its amazing just how many people insist that LoTR is the greatest bunch of movies EVAR! They just don’t do it for me though. It’s not about the length though. i actually enjoy a long movie. Years ago most movies were about 2 hours, but compare that to most movies now running at 1.5 hours… 30 mins is actually a huge difference. Alot of movies could benefit from that extra 30 mins.

As the trilogy stands as a whole, they probably are the best movies ever. I can’t think of another three movie series that is better.
I’m a big Star Wars fan and I could accept the fact that SW is cheesy. SW is Nostalgia more than anything. LOTR is the first time I felt a movie/movies deserved the oscars it won.
I’m also very big into the books (read them annually) and the genre. Read D+D type books and Tolkien is like the grandfather of the genre.
I hope they get the Hobbit out before Ian Mckellen dies.

Silmarillion is a tough read. It reads like an encyclopedia. The events in the LOTR trilogy are covered on 3 pages. I like how music defines the world. Kind of reminds me of how we ended up finding out that Bob Dylan is god in Battlestar Galactica.

1000% vs 88% surge in sales is a big different no matter what the actual sales number are. the fact is on product raised it sales by 1000% and the other raised it by just 88%
if the PS3 was selling 1 console per month, the 1000% surge will raise its sales to 10 units (10x better)
while if the 360 was selling 50 console per month, the 88% will raise its sales to 94 units (1.88x better)
so which one is a bigger increased 10x vs 1.88x?

Oh my bad. I honestly don’t really consider that a real price cut though. When the price remains the same and they offer a better deal on a system with the larger HDD and wifi we don’t really consider that a price cut right? I know we didn’t when it happened over and over with the PS3.

I actually expect Xbox to outsell PS3 by a decent margin, Kinect will be the icing on the cake for that.
However Sony know this – and they can see their PS3 slim, despite improved sales, has not been the smash they’d hoped for.

Maybe they’ll choose to go back to selling their console at an enormous loss.

The bet favored him and not me. The PS3 has had shortages and the 360 has been outselling the PS3 in NPD’s for that quarter for almost 200K. A difference Sony did not make up for with Japan.
The rest of the World was the wild card, and considering how confident Happy sounded I figured he’d jump all over it.

How about the same terms for the fiscal 09 MS year which ends at the end of June 10′. We’ll get the numbers in a little bit. The catch is, I wont even count Sony’s numbers for that quarter so you get a whole extra quarter with no competition to add to the numbers.
The 360 Slim came out in that month boosting the 360′s numbers and you get that without me adding the PS3′s numbers.

If they actually performed a service that wasn’t available elsewhere for free (PC). Dedicated servers would be a nice start for 1st party games. Increase the player counts…etc.

no matter what you say, the PS3 is one of the top Bluray players to date and has always offered more value than a 360…..you are too blind to see that though.
I see that your “I dont care for it” is the only thing you have going against it but you lame excuse doesnt change the fact that the PS3 offers more out of the box (whether you care for it or not) than the 360: BD player, Web Browser, free online, upgradable HDD, wifi, K&M support, able to synch with your TV via HDMI (I have yet to see this feature on my 360), built-in battery and more.
Xbox 360 is trying to catch up by adding wifi on the new system but that’s another feature you dismissed a while back with one of your “I dont care for it” comment

Whats funny is, ive pointed out to him MANY times, there is ONLY ONE player that is better than the PS3, is an Oppo player…i.e not the LG Dual Player he has…

Those forums, along with Arstechnica, will recommend the PS3 as a BR player over ANY other player..save that Oppo ( i think thats the brand not sure) and the ONLY reason is because the Oppo plays EVERY AUDIO output/input….

1) I ‘supported’ HD DVD because it game me about 130 high def movies at an average price of less than $10.
Similarly the HD DVD players I have ever bought were massively less expensive that any comparable Blu-ray (which back then was a £400 PS3).

It was a purely financial decision, nothing to do with game consoles or the CE corps making them.

since Phranc was debating between the value between the PS3 vs 360, lets compare HH list from the “PS3 vs 360″ perspective (and see which offers more):
1) PS3 is region locked for Blu-ray
360 does not play any high def disc from any region, hence PS3 better value compare to 360
2) PS3 is region locked for DVD
so is the 360, but at least PS3 plays Bluray movies
3) PS3 cannot play HD DVD
neither can the PS3, but the PS3 plays the standard optical format for HD content and the 360 does not play either.

Ok Happy, you are entitled to your opinions. However the PS3 is not just a piece of hardware that plays movies. It does many other things well. Your reasons
are mainly geared towards the PS3′s video playback as if the PS3 were just a stand alone video player. My launch PS3 is very quite, I can’t hear the fan at all when I have a movie playing or a game with the sound on. Do you speak from experience? Do you own a PS3 that you have played games and movies on? You are really making a fuss over the PS3′s extra 56w of power rating compared to your stand alone unit? That is very little, not like you would have your PS3 drawing max power 24/7! Your reasons are your reasons and your opinions! In my opinion, I think your reasons are very weak and close minded when we are talking about a piece of hardware that is so much more then a video player.
At the heart and soul, PS3 is a game console! You really did not give a reason about that aspect of the PS3 as to why it was not good enough or meeting your requirements? I guess you’re not really a gamer, more of a casual player who requires certain video playback features in his game consoles. Hey that’s cool, not knocking you! I might just add, I have had 2 HD DVD add-ons.
The 1st I bought in a rare instance of my buying on launch day at launch price (which was £120 – $183 US/$205 Aus here in the UK).
Largely because it was outstanding value compared to any other high def player out there at the time.
That was before I had an Xbox 360.
I used it entirely as a PC ROM drive and connected it to my HD TV that way.
Then I bought a stand-alone HD DVD player and sold it.
I got back all my money on it too.
Result.
Later I decided it would be worth buying another as insurance in casethe LG broke down or there was an accident with it.
I was happy to do this as I could take advantage of the incredibly low prices the HD DVD add-on was/is going for.
2nd time aeround I bought a brand new boxed HD DVD add-on for IIRC £21 inc del
($32 US/$36 Aus).
….although I’m not completely sure, it could have been £25 ($38 US/$43 Aus).
At the time when you took account of the fact that HD DVD was never region locked and the significant amount of films that were Blu-ray exclusive in the USA only (but were available on HD DVD in Europe because different publishers owned the rights and supported HD DVD) I not only had a much cheaper high def player but I also had a larger choice of films.
So, it cost less and there was more content.
You see, I do not care that HD DVD ‘died’.
I still have the discs which work prefectly and I have an excellent dual format player which was still much cheaper than the next least expensive Blu-ray/DVD-only player – even if I did have to import it myself.
I have a back-up player which cost me peanuts.

Putting down the PS3 as a capable blu ray player is a bit odd when you patch worked the 360 addon to be a capable player for home theater. That audio must have been incredible.

When I bought my multi-format player PS3 was far more expensive than it is now.
I wanted a high def video player capable of all regions (on everything), PS3 did not and still does not meet that need.
Once I’d gotten my all formats video player (at far less than the cost of a PS3) why would I want a PS3?
Even now in the UK it is more expensive (and yes it is still noteably more expensive than the new Xbox S).
Like I said it has a handful of highly scored exclusives, around half of which I have no interest in at all.
So, you tell me, why would I bother pi$$ing money away on a PS3?

£120 for a ROM drive (with great content) was a far better deal that £425 ($649 US/$726 Aus) which was the price of the PS3 in the UK.
Blu-ray launched later than HD DVD and content was for a long time less.

I don’t know what you see when you post those lists but all I’m seeing is a list of games in genres Xbox already has very well covered.
1st party/3rd party, like I or any non-devotee would care.
You also prefer to skirt the point that since 2008 the run of decent PS3 games has hardly been fast (a handful in 08, another handful in 09 and so on in 10) and that all the way through Xbox has offered more games and more high scoring games.
I’m really not inyterested in the fact that 1 or 2 of those PS3 games scored 1 or 2% (or, wow, maybe even 4%) more than the Xbox equivelent.
The plain fact is PS3 is just not competitive in the UK.

You can’t prove a thing about European PS3 sales because Sony doesn’t produce numbers for Europe only (they cheat and include other territories in their numbers).
That’s just a fact.
Secondly the Xbox S has only come out this month in Europe so quite how you imagine you have numbers which show it’s sales slowing is just, as usual, laughably absurd.

They Numbers did not came from Sony you idiot, it came from another source which included the sales for each contry in Europe then the combined them sales showed the PS3 leading over the 360 in Europe.
Microsoft includes Africa in the “European” (I guess they also cheat in their numbers) sales…while Sony does the same, you got mislead by what Kev (your alter ego) months ago.
Sony gave their “European” numbers and then gave the sales for their “Pal” territories which includes a few contries outside of Europe. (two different sales figures)
either way Toshi proved you wrong and what did you do about it? you skipped his post and continue trolling.
too bad the 360 sales are back to normal here…after all most of the 360 sales during the launch of the 360 S were old units at a reduced price…the price cut was what caused the surge in sales and not the redisign LMAO.

feel free to try and back up the claim that Microsoft did not cheat and that they dont included some countries from Africa. When you can back up that Sony included countries outside of EU for their “European” countries (and not PAL territories) then I bring you proof that MS includes countries from Africa.
while you are here raving about some UK numbers, let me remind you that the PS3 outsold the 360 all last year.
oh and it’s all outselling this year….
if that’s not enough for you, then let me tell you that even when selling at a higher price the PS3 have taken the lead in Europe even though it was released a year later…LMAO
Crackdown 2 have all July by itself LMAO, it should sell decent since there barely any competition for the month.
