EA sees Tiger Woods sales dwindle

July 21, 2010

It’s fair to say EA Sports took a gamble in standing behind Tiger Woods when his reputation nosedived at the end of last year. It’s a gamble that doesn’t seem to have paid off.

While a host of other companies were severing their ties with Tiger Woods as his infidelity became public knowledge, EA decided to stick with the golfing superstar for Tiger Woods 11, the latest installment of the bestselling golf game series.

However, a quick look at the NPD sales figures for June suggests this may have been a bad move.

In its first month on sale, Tiger Woods 11 only sold around 32 percent of the copies its predecessor managed in the same time frame last year. On the Wii, the figures were even worse, with a differential of 86 percent from Tiger Woods 10 to Tiger Woods 11.

The game could still go on to sell well overall, and there may be other reasons for this decline (such as the fact the game only slightly improves on the previous version) but still, it looks as though EA messed up by backing the alleged love cheat.

I like the career mode in Tiger Woods 11. Screwing porn stars before every tournament brought a new level of realism to this game. It does give you the option not to sleep with them, but if you don’t your game goes to hell. Another fun part was when you had to drive your SUV while a pissed off hot blonde was trying to take you out with a golf club. I crash every time I try this level. It really has a certain degree of Grand Theft Auto to it now.

What does Tiger Woods have in common with a baby seal?

They’ve both been clubbed by a Norwegian. :D

You would have thought that the south park episode would have increased sales a bit.

I also think popularity for the title will be piqued again with Move support.

I heard Tiguer is sponsoring a new brand of Condoms.
His Slogan: “When 18 holes is not enough”

also, Tiger Woodes 2011′s “cheat mode” allows you to play a variety of different holes at the same time.

I for one believe EA has made some decent headway this gen. Some great titles have come from them, and it doesn’t hurt that they appear like the lesser of two evils when compared to Activision.

As for headway made by HH and CAD. It may more closely resemble the kind you mentioned. :)

    LOL
