What if PSN+ covered MMO fees?
If PSN+ isn’t yet offering enough to make you pay up, would the inclusion of monthly MMO fees change your mind?
A rumor earlier today claimed that DC Universe Online could be free to play for PSN+ subscribers, with the usual $14.99 subscription cost waived for those already paying Sony for the premium PS3 service.
This turned out to be false, and PSN+ subscribers will still be charged to play DCUO. However, it does raise the question of if not, why not? Surely this is the kind of thing PSN+ is there for?
If a PSN+ subscription included the monthly fees for MMOs then I’d sign up. Something which I’m already tempted to do but haven’t yet done. Hell, even if it halved the monthly fee then I’d be tempted.
Alternatively, it makes me wonder whether Sony will end up charging non-PSN+ subscribers to play its first-party MMOs. Which would irk me no end.

It’s been a few years since I’ve had anything that could be described as a social life! Strangely it coincided with becoming a full-time blogger.

It must be boring to be a full-time blogger.

I’ve held off on PSN+. I’m interested in DC and FFXIV, but don’t want to pay the monthly fee.
If PSN+ did include MMO fees, I’d sign up in a heartbeat.
July 25th, 2010
Never heard of DC online

The subscription fee would more than cover an MMO’s monthly fee, so it would be a no brainer to sign up if this was the case.

DC Universe Online & Gran Turimo 5 are both releasing on November 2nd.

its a PS3/PC MMO made by Sony Online Entertainment (SOE)
July 25th, 2010
Why ain’t it on the 360 then if it’s PC as well? Is it like WOW?
July 25th, 2010
“Why ain’t it on the 360 then if it’s PC as well?”
because its a Sony owned IP, SOE in this case which are also a PC developers.
“Is it like WOW?”
in a sense yes, but its more of a “Action MMO”

“The subscription fee would more than cover an MMO’s monthly fee, so it would be a no brainer to sign up if this was the case.”
If the MMO fee is $15/month and the PSN+ price is $5/month it doesn’t cover the MMO price by a long shot.
If it cuts the MMO price by half it would be worth it.

I think you should get a few months free sub with the purchase of the game.
July 26th, 2010
I think 30-day trial is now standard on most MMOs.
asking for PSN+ to cover MMOs monthy fees (is kind of unfair and it just doesnt make any sense. PSN+ cost $50 for a year while playing a MMO for a year will cost you about $180…
reducing the monthly fee is more likely.
July 26th, 2010
I can see a deal where if you pay for the MMO you automatically get PSN+ thrown in.
July 26th, 2010
Sony is not loosing anything for their PSN+. It only cost them Bandwidth for people to download the free stuff and they make more on the discounted games people buy that they normally wouldn’t.
I think it should be discounted for sure.

if Sony reduce the MMO monthly fee for PSN+ members then it’s a no brainer for anyone playing a MMO on console.

@ phranctoast
If the MMO fee is $15/month and the PSN+ price is $5/month it doesn’t cover the MMO price by a long shot.
That’s what I meant. That the subscription annual fee is $70 a year here, and an MMO fee would be in the ballpark of $15 a month, meaning it would be a no brainer to sign up to PSN+ if they waived the MMO fee.
July 27th, 2010
Oh. The way it sounded was the Complete opposite.
Anyway. I doubt it will happen. More than likely MMO subscribers will get PSN+ thrown in. Unless Sony was truly looking into a free MMO subscription we should count this as a far fetched rumor. On top of that, it would only apply to SOE MMO’s.

They do it for everything else.

What is the difference between free MAG and a free MMO?
About 700 players.
July 27th, 2010
lol I meant as far as cost to Sony.

They do it for Free Realms on the PC, but that operated on a micro-transactions DLC format.
July 27th, 2010
Free Realms is offering a lifetime membership for a one time price of $30. That offer will last for about a month.
July 27th, 2010
If it is free why would I pay $30?
July 27th, 2010
it’s free but your experienced is limited. Free Realms offers an optional membership for a single player, allowing for 3 characters to be created per account plus other benefits such as member-only quests, jobs, and items. You can either play the game for free and enjoyed what’s offered to you or become a subscriber ($5/month) to get the full experiece – it’s pretty much just like tha “Sodium” game you played in PS HOME.
They are offering a one-time payment of $30 to become a lifetime subscriber.
Micro-transactions are available for everyone
the game has over 10 million members already
July 27th, 2010
DC will be the only MMO for me. Even if I have to pay $20 a month. I think all my other games will be neglected.
July 27th, 2010
