Alan Wake started boring developer

July 31, 2010

When a game takes five years to make, I guess boredom is bound to set in. A belief now confirmed by Alan Wake developer Remedy.

Alan Wake took in excess of five years to make. Why did it take that long? No one seems that sure, because when it finally arrived earlier this year it didn’t seem to warrant that much time, money, and hard work. That’s not to say it’s a bad game, but is it really five years good? Hmm.

Games Thirst reports Sam Lake as telling OXM:

We did worry about that. When you’ve worked on something for a very, very long time, there’s always the danger of getting bored with it. You become used to it, and where things once felt very exciting and original, you at some point start to doubt that and feel like, ‘well, we’ve seen this already, it’s not that exciting, we should think of something new.’

Along the way we tried out different things, but they never did feel better than the original high-level vision. They served their purpose, though, in that they made us trust the original vision again.

All jobs are boring, and full of repetition, but games development must be especially galling in that respect. Especially if you’re part of a team working on a game for five long years.

With that in mind, Kazunori Yamauchi must be as bored as hell. After all, he’s been making essentially the same game for the past 15 years.

What separates GT from other video game franchises is that Kazunori Yamauchi will never outgrow his passion cars- real or virtual.
For a poor guy like me, I have learned a hard lesson of never underestimating a car enthusiast’s passion for amassing millions to spending millions for his hobby and collection of his machines- its ridiculously insane!

Also GT series is a cash cow & advertising powerhouse for Sony. The revenue alone for Prologue is enough to cover the $60 milliion budget. How much more with the deal alone NASCAR? Alan Wake was criticized for poor in-game product placements where in GT the whole game is a product placement game itself.
Also, a game like GT which constantly raises the standards of video gaming will only get challenging but never get boring.

Only a fool dwells on foolish things. The name gives it all away “Alan Wake.”

Does anyone believe this title would have been a better Move title with controls of the flash light tide to the controller?
