Gamescom 2010: Things you may not know edition – part 2

August 19, 2010

Gamescom 2010: Things you may not know edition – part 2 In continuation of all things Gamescom, here is the second part of things that you may not know of or have seen. With the sheer amount of announcements to come out of the conference its getting difficult to track everything.

The 3rd Birthday

Square Enix showed off actual gameplay for the highly anticipated spin-off from the Parasite Eve universe, The 3rd Birthday. The game looks like it is coming along nicely.

You may not have seen this amazing trailer:

Xbox 360 gets its own Sorcery

The PS3 has Sorcery, a game that requires you to wave the Move controller to cast spells and perform devastating area attacks. It looks like the Kinect for the Xbox 360 will be getting a similar game. The new Harry Potter game will have you running and “casting” on rails.

You may not have seen this great stage demonstration:

Ghost Recon for the PSP and Wii

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier is looking spectacular for the PS3 and Xbox 360. However, Ubisoft announced two new additions to the Ghost Recon universe. The company will be developing Ghost Recon: Predator for the PSP and Ghost Recon Wii.

PS3 -  new SKUs

Its been rumored that Sony will be getting more SKus with beefier storage. It appears that those rumors were indeed true with the announcement of two brand new SKUs – a 160GB PS3 for $299 and a 320GB PS3 for $399 for the PS3.

What you may not know is that the $399 PS3 bundle comes with the Move kit (Move controller, PS Eye, Sports Champions). Also, the 120GB PS3 has been speculated to drop in price to $250.

Kinect gets a UFC like fighting game

A new game called Fighters Uncaged will be released around March time frame finalize every. The game looks eerily similar to the Move fighting game. It looks like it requires that you be shape when it comes around.

What you may not know is that the tech carries over 70 unique combat movies.

    “The game looks eerily similar to the Move fighting game”

    Except it’s in color, not black, red, and white… you can use the other half of your body…
    it has 21 different settings instead of 12…
    you don’t have to push buttons in order to execute headlocks or elbow strikes…
    you don’t have to hold to light up bulb wands…
    wtf?… it actually looks to be more responsive than Move’s The Fight… I thought that wasn’t supposed to happen…

    I’ll still try The Fight out, but from what I’ve seen so far Fighters Uncaged looks to be a deeper fighting game overall.

    FTR, Sorcery looks to blow that HP game out of the water.

    Ubisoft to Employee: “Hey, great news! You’re going to be working on a new Ghost Hunter!”

    Employee: “Wow! What a great career move”

    Ubisoft: “You’re on the PSP version”

    Employee: “Oh shi-…”

  4. lock_down:

    Ghost Recon even…oh man, I fail.

  5. Rimmer:

    The Harry potter game has some nice touches on paper, but that demo looks utter pants. Does it have voice commands as well, requiring you to call out the spell?
    Fighters uncaged looks a lot better, just the sort of thing where Kinect is the best choice of control system. I wonder if it comes with fight tutorials.

    Crysis 2 Multiplayer footage looks pretty sweet, and that’s just on console!!! I think it’s PS3, is it called R3 on 360?

    http://www.mycrysis.com/news/crysis_2/gamescom_multiplayer_footage_2

  8. ncaissie:

    Hp on rails and a fighting game?
    Con will like the fighting game. Lol

  9. phranctoast:

    Fighter uncaged looks decent. Although voice command special moves is even dumber than pressing a button to initiate headlocks.

    That Harry Potter game looks pretty terrible. Maybe they can fix the lag but the on rails part kind of sucks. On rails is good for some games, but now we get to see Star Wars and Harry Potter are both on rails….future isn’t all the bright for the core.

    @Survivor
    I thought the SP Crysis 2 footage looked pretty impressive.

  10. SW:

    I don’t know what you’re talking about Phranc.

    I for one look for forward to playing many a RPG, Action adventure, and platformers on rails! The final barrier for casual players, actually playing the game, is removed!

    @Carlb – “it actually looks to be more responsive…”

    Have you found any actual onstage footage for the game? You’ll forgive me if I don’t necessarily trust a trailer…

  11. CarlB:

    @SW,

    Going off of the above linked IGN demo video (and also their write-up) for The Fight and Gamespot’s hands-on write-up for Fighters Uncaged with the trailer for now. Gamespot said there was some delay, but once they got used to the timing (as IGN did with The Fight: “You need to swing calmly enough that the PlayStation Eye is picking up the Move’s blub and the game is given the time to make the move happen. “), it wasn’t nearly as noticeable.

    To be fair, I could have worded it better. The Fight’s demo video looked extremely awkward, but for now, I’ll just say Fighter’s Uncaged looks just as responsive from all impressions so far, it not more so.

    On rails games SUCK BALLS like HH, CAD and CON.

  13. Rimmer:

    the crysis 2 MP footage looks incredible visually with the destructable environment, lighting and highly detailed environments. Really look forward to the game. Like the look of the Crysis 2 Nano Edition too. The Backpack looks pretty sweet :)

  14. Roca.:

    I have to agree with CarlB, The Fight does look shitty. But Fighter Uncaged doesn’t look that impressive either.

    Kung-Fu Live gamplay footage was more impressive and shows PS Eye capabilities to track different part of a human body. The Shoot looks more impressive as you use body movements to pop in/out of cover, swtich from one side to the other,etc – all done due to PS Eye ability to track body movements.

  15. CON:

    @Norman

    Damn you got us! I wish I was as witty as you.

  16. ncaissie:

    Yeah. I bet you do dipshit.

  17. Roca.:

    This will be the first time that Gran Turismo will release in NA first….and simultaneously in EU and JP.

  18. CAD:

    Why does on the Rails suck? Have you ever played an on the Rails game? I can’t even think of a on the Rails game that I’ve seen before. Where did this term even come from in the first place? The first time I heard the term was for the Starwars Kinect Demo from E3 this year.

    Personally I don’t see nothing wrong with a on Rails game if it’s fun to play.

  19. CAD:

    Fighters uncaged looks awasome. Thank you Ubisoft for making Core Kinect games. Since Microsfot want to sit on their ass for 18 Months just take the reigns and make it happen. Can’t wait to show my friend this game he’s been talking about a game like this for a while. Kinect is shaping up to be quite the device for controller free gaming.

  20. CAD:

    SO the PS3 is getting a price reduction on 120GB. Hmmmmm Maybe it’s time…………

  21. FahKinSuPah:

    @CAD

    On rails is often seen as a design limitation. You have much less control over the flow of the game.

    Last time I played an on-rails game… I think it was Revolution X for Sega Genesis lol. I don’t think “on-rails” have been used much since then

  22. Liquid:

    CAD

    on rails games are shit and boring. . .eh remember time crisis?? you really must just love microsoft because your willing to defend them every chance you get. . . .loser. oh and hahahahaha at mass effect 2 coming out on ps3. . .paybacks at bitch huh??

  23. Roca.:

    On rails means “you don’t actually control the character”

    That term has been around for a while now.
    On Rails is not that bad for shooters (House of the Dead, Time Crisis, Rez HD, etc) but now Kinect’s limitation (no button) is turning action/racing games into on rails games.

  24. twilight:

    Roca,
    Gran Turismo? Bring it on. I can’t wait for this game.
    By the way, I forgot to mention nice write up.

  25. SW:

    - “I can’t even think of a on the Rails game that I’ve seen before. ”

    Never played Virtual Cop or Time Crisis (Insert light gun game here)? Same thing really, cept no light gun.

    *flash back to youth & time spent in arcades in Cornwall*

    Good times.

    - “making Core Kinect games.”

    The content of the game does not make it ‘core’. Flailing like a mad man to make a chainsaw cut babies in two doesn’t make it ‘hard core’…

  26. SW:

    Hey, three people mentioned Time Crisis :D

    You know you all loved it when it came out. The ‘moving slide’ on the arcade guns was awesome for feedback :P

  27. CAD:

    Liquid

    Are you out of your mind. Time Crisis was awesome!! How dare you!! If that’s the case then I look forward to Harry Potter.

    Oh and enjoy the gimped version of ME2. LOL

  28. phranctoast:

    @CAD
    Not all “on rails” games suck. It’s a different genre altogether. It’s more of an arcade shooter type genre.

    House of the Dead and sequels are “on rails”. Time Crisis games are “On rails”

    The term means, you don’t control the movement, just the aiming.

    These games can be good. Not knocking them, as I’m interested in Dead Space Extraction and that’s “on rails”.

    But would you rather have an “On rails” Dead Space game or one fully controllable by yourself.

    I’d rather play Harry Potter when I can control the character, and I rather play Star Wars when I can control the character.

    All it does is show some of the limitation that Kinetc will have to deal with.

  29. phranctoast:

    wow… talk about being late with a reply…..

  30. FahKinSuPah:

    Oh shit guys! This awsome game was just announced for Kinect. I don’t have a link or a video of it yet but I will post it up asap.

    It’s called A Silent Night with Marcel Marceau. It has you learning how to become a Mime from Marcel Marceau, and then when your good enough you get to perform your own mime routine on a street corner in france.

    That game sounds so fucking awsome. I think I might just have to get Kinect now! :-D

  31. Liquid:

    CAD

    how is it gimped? dont you mean superior? LOL

    oh and yeah time crisis was fun. . .for about 20mins then i went and played a real game. but hey if limited linear games are your thing, den work away. . .il stick to real games.

  32. jojo29:

    haha, you guys failed to mention some really AWESOME ‘on rail’type games…BUT, Kinect :”on rails game, i can tell you right now, will be NOWHERE near the quality of these games:

    Panzer Dragoon Series: To me, possibly the best on rails shooter ever. Followed by

    Star Fox…

    These are considered “on rails” ….

  33. phranctoast:

    Rebel Assault

  34. Rimmer:

    Actually quite a few games have “on rails” segments within their main story line. Usually during vehicle sequences where you have to man the guns etc.
    Just watched the TED footage of Peter M introducing Milo. Quite incredible and seems to have a lot of potential. I really hope they develop the story for it and release it as a game. I could see it being a bit like Heavy Rain just even more interactive. Btw the video shows kinect being used whilst sitting down, so it obviously doesn’t require you to stand to work. http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/peter_molyneux_demos_milo_the_virtual_boy.html

  35. Liquid:

    phranc

    what did you think of rebel assault 2 on PSone?

  36. CAD:

    Kinect dashboard navigation works while seated

    http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/19/kinect-dashboard-navigation-works-while-seated/

  37. phranctoast:

    I played it on PC. don’t really remember it.

  38. CAD:

    Rimmer beat me to it.

  39. SW:

    @Rimmer – My brain turns to hate mode whenever Peter M is on the screen.

    He seems to have some kind of ‘problem’ with story telling that I don’t understand. Maybe his problem is that all of his games don’t get the universal praise and love that in his brain/hype machine he assigns to those games,. Its like saying movies suck because you can’t tell Tony Stark to stop drinking so much.

    I will give him one single thing tho, he does say ‘its a trick’.

    Anyways the whole thing looks as interesting as Flower, which was fine for 3 and a half minutes.

    Yes, I purchased Flower, I am not proud of it.

  40. Rimmer:

    “My brain turns to hate mode whenever Peter M is on the screen.” I can see how he can bring that out in people. Bit of a love him / hate him type of guy. He is the biggest hype merchant out there though! :)
    CAD – nice find. Like the final sentance: “According to Microsoft, Kinect was running on an improved version of the software used during E3 in June. The manufacturer is set to make further improvements before the camera’s November debut.” this is exactly why it is pointless to start criticising something until it is actually released.

  41. ncaissie:

    @cad
    Yes the wii has shitty rails games.

  42. Roca.:

    Action games on rails sucks..Star Wars, Harry Potter and Forza will all offer a half assed experience.

    Button is an important feature after all, too bad MS didnt get the memo

  43. ncaissie:

    I don’t think they would change the hardware this late.

  44. ncaissie:

    ALL rail games Suck.

  45. ncaissie:

    They are ment for arcades.

  46. Roca.:

    @CAD
    http://www.lazygamer.co.za/xbox-360/comparing-harry-potters-kinect-features-to-moves-sorcery/

  47. CAD:

    Carl B

    Well here is my take on the two games. Sorcery looks good but HP Looks better. With HP you can target enemies. Move shows no ability to target. Sorcery is a full blown game where HP Kinect features are only a part of the bigger games. Sorcery has some cool features like morphing and wind Tunnel where HP has the force field which was cool and I believe it offers voice control as well. HP uses rails and Sorcery uses a conttoller for movement. Overall I would play both.

  48. ncaissie:

    I would play either. Motion controls suck. Rail games suck.
    Together they realy suck bad.

  49. ncaissie:

    Would = wouldn’t lol

  50. CAD:

    Ncaissie

    Stop hateing and just get with the times. Motion control is not bad at all. The Wii has taught me to embrace motion control and I like it. Just pick up Move and stop your Bitching!

  51. Roca.:

    360 + Wii = PS3

  52. CarlB:

    “ALL rail games Suck.”

    I haven’t played the best of them yet, so I can’t make that statement, there does seem to be quite a few that are considered very good, and here is just two that are coming to move:

    http://www.gamepro.com/article/reviews/212187/dead-space-extraction/

    On rails port to PS3 Move.

    “The Shoot looks more impressive”

    Also on rails.

    @roca,

    HPK elements shown here are essentially shooter elements (albeit with wands and powers instead of guns and bullets), so if we buy into the criticisms being bandied about simply because of it being “on rails” (or rather simply because it is for Kinect and not Move), then we might as well buy into the same for Move’s similar on rail move games.

    http://gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2010/06/15/hands-on-with-the-shoot-for-ps3-move.aspx

  53. Roca.:

    @CAD
    Sorcery was one of the most impressive Move game (and motion game) while Harry Potter was the laughing stock of GamesCom LMao

  54. CarlB:

    Harry Potter is also on PS3.

  55. CarlB:

    http://www.amazon.com/Harry-Potter-Deathly-Hallows-Playstation-3/dp/B003R3JNMI/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1282281369&sr=8-4

    Personally I don’t believe EA really cares about making any of the titles high enough quality to be impressive, they just want to cash in on the name (i.e. as little invested as necessary to get it to market where it will sell regardless to franchise fans), as is the case with almost all major movie tie in games.

    Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will release for all systems, the 360 version just uses Kinect as the controller instead. Sony might patch in move support, but gameplay will likely be the same. Instead of comparing it to Sorcery, an entirely different style of game, a more fair comparison would be to compare the same game to other platform’s versions.

  56. gunstar:

    I just bought my new PSP 3000 at $99.99 from Future Shop!

    3rd Birthday another reason for me to enjoy it.

    PSP games always had that special appeal to me. As a gamer who didn’t played much in the PS2 era. PSP games make up for the lack of decent Japanese games on the PS3. The games are around $19.99.

    The graphics are just right tho somewhere in between cool enough and some stuff left for my imagination. The ability to play it on my HDTV is a great plus.
    I got the RGB composite cable for $9.99.

    Also with Skype my PSP is as good as a phone here in Canada.

    PSP 3000 > DSiLL

    PSP2 can wait for 2/3 years later.

  57. oldschool1987:

    Hey CAD you heard the news about Mass Effect 2? lmao

  58. CarlB:

    “PSP2 can wait for 2/3 years later”

    “some suggestions that the hardware will be released before the end of 2011″

    wen ar u going to buy a ps3??

  60. ncaissie:

    “Stop hateing and just get with the times.”
    Dude I have had a wii for years. You will see how fast the novelty goes away.

  61. ncaissie:

    “360 + Wii = PS3″

    Correction

    (360 + Wii) * 10 = PS3

  62. CarlB:

    Correction

    F(360 + Wii) * 10B = PS3W

    F= Fan
    B= Boy
    W= Wishes

  63. Roca.:

    CarlB failed at math….lmao

    your formula is can be simplyfied like this
    10FB (360+Wii) = PS3W

    FB = Fanboy Bullshit
    W = Win

  64. CarlB:

    That will work too, considering it’s mainly Pbot FB that deludes them into believing PS3W. Have you played Dead Rising yet?

  65. ncaissie:

    Lol

    Scribblenauts? Bah! Now I want to buy it so I can scribble in a Kratos to rip off a scribblenaut’s head.

    I guess New Vegas doesn’t bring anything “new” enough to beat out a racing sim redux… that’s sad. I bet if it had “head tracking” hookers with lines of coke on their backs you could snort through a move controller it would have won hands down.

  69. phranctoast:

    Where’s that game? Sounds like a blast (lol) for about 20 minutes.

  70. Roca.:

    Move = Peripheral Winner
    GT5 = Overall winner
    Kinect = Lagfest winner – Harry Potter proves it.

  71. phranctoast:

    oh Roca. lagfest didn’t have a category. But if it did, you’d be right :)

  72. CAD:

    So the Harry potter Kinect Video which has an obvious delay with the lip sync proves that there is Lag yet there is two different videos screens that shows the Weasely twins and the other of the game. They are two different feeds yet it’s believe that there is lag. if you could actually see the whole picture It would be believeable. Yet all the write up of it from the event and they don’t mention this lag. Sounds suspicious. Then there is Fighter Uncaged which shows good percision and that is totally dismissed. The HP video even blacks out a few times in the video. Was the person videotaping illigially? Fanboys will believe anything.

  73. Roca.:

    @CAD

    didnt you see how many times Kinect did not read their moves…overall it was a lagfest.

    Gran Turismo 5 was the Winner stealing the award from high quality games. Too bad Sony didn’t show much about GT5 at E3…if they did GT5 would’ve been the most awared game at E3.

  74. CarlB:

    It did beat Kirby’s Epic Yarn, I guess that’s something.

  75. ncaissie:

    ” The HP video even blacks out a few times in the video. Was the person videotaping illigially? Fanboys will believe anything.”

    LMFAO do you know how desperate you sound? Are you realy worried that ms will go broke and have to pull it’s cock from your ass?

  76. ncaissie:

    Is there any video out there that wasn’t produced by ms that didn’t have massive lag and non responsive?

  77. CarlB:

    Yes, I think it was Halo Reach, Fable III, Gears of War III, and Metal Gear.

  78. ncaissie:

    “Yes, I think it was Halo Reach, Fable III, Gears of War III, and Metal Gear.”
    I ment for Kinetic.

  79. CarlB:

    Child of Eden didn’t seem to have “massive” lag.
