Is Mafia II racist to Italian-Americans?
Can a game be considered “racist nonsense” because it focuses on one group of people over all others?
Mafia II is, as its name suggests, a game which deals with the Italian Mafia. It’s set just after World War II, and tells how a war veteran returns home and becomes a made man.
Unico National, an organization which helps and supports Italian-Americans, considers Mafia II to be racist. According to Ripten, Unico president Andre DiMino called the game “a pile of racist nonsense,” and stated:
Why would [Take-Two] foist a game on their targeted audience of young people wherein they will indoctrinate a new generation into directly associating Italians and Italian-Americans with violent, murderous organized crime, to the exclusion of all of the other ‘mafias’ run by other ethnic and racial groups?
Well, hang on a moment. The Italian Mafia has been portrayed in hundreds of games, TV shows, and films over the years, so why is Mafia II being singled out? Then there is the fact that games have portrayed many different races as being criminals over the years.
Hell, Grand Theft Auto IV is a veritable smörgåsbord of gangsters, all from different nationalities. And the main protagonist is from Eastern Europe. Who cares?

Man, I task a games company to make a game representing every gang and locale for every gang in the world. That would be one epic game.
Anyways, perhaps if so many Italian Americans were not involved in organized crime back in the day then maybe there wouldn’t be games about it?
