PSJailBreak is short lived snatch-and-grab scam

August 23, 2010

PSJailBreak is short lived snatch-and-grab scam News of a potential hack for the PS3 spread like wild fire across the Web recently. Besides the fact the PS3 has remained unhackable for nearly four years, there is nothing else special about the situation.

There are other consoles out on the market that have already been hacked for quite some time. The Wii and Xbox 360 have been hacked within a few months after launch. However, retailers selling the PS3 mod seem to be desperate to offload as many units as possible at ridiculously high prices of $170 AUS. Other illegal mods on the black market go for much less starting at $20.

Several sites have done some analysis on the USB mod for the PS3 and they all conclude that it should be a relatively inexpensive mod and doesn’t warrant the unusual price.

As I mentioned in my previous post, if the hack is based on tricking the PS3 into thinking its a dev unit then its a design flaw rather then a true hack. A true hack usually requires circumventing the security measures (in this case unlock all of the encryption layers) and creating a custom firmware. This was what George Hotz was working on before he gave up.

A way to downgrade and a custom firmware would be the key to entering a true perpetual cycle of a cat-and-mouse game between hackers and Sony.

However, what we have here is not that but a temporary workaround or “trick,” in which the window for use may permanently close soon.

Digital Foundry in an analysis recently stated:

Bearing in mind that PSJailbreak is retailing for upwards of $130, there’s a very strong possibility that this may well be the most expensive and short-lived hack ever made, and factoring in the simplicity of the hardware, the very high price seems almost reminiscent of a smash-and-grab raid on users intent on piracy no matter what the cost. The makers of PSJailbreak are charging so high a price because the window of opportunity in terms of exclusivity and the longevity of the hack itself is potentially very small.

Another site, Nyleveia did a rather thorough analysis of the USB device by taking it apart and has gone as far as to identify all of the components in order to see if the device could be cloned. However, they also conclude that it may not be worth the effort as the tech is definitely easily detectable by Sony.

Nyleveia writes:

this provides a reasonable explanation for the ridiculously high price of the USB device: the creators are in effect taking snatch-and-grab approach before the device gets blocked and rendered useless.

It appears that the PS3 hack could be a snatch-and-grab situation, scamming gamers out of $170 AUS. Judging from the analysis, It seems like if you ordered the device it could be rendered useless by the time you receive it from overseas.

Well it’s as simple as this…negotiate with Sony for the last time to re-install the OS feature or…. kidnap the head ceo at gunpoint and force him to suck a giraffe’s dick. :)

  2. The Future of Sega:

Maybe the trick to hacking the PS3 is in the blu-ray discs. I’m not to familiar with dual processors but I’ve had my fair share of hacking when I studied Applied Sciences Information Technology. Now I know that’s totally different from the PS3 but I’m certain some of the concepts of I.T. still apply.

The OS feature may be disabled but the internet browser isn’t. That may the golden ticket in….. FUTURE OF SEGA YOU’RE A GENIUS!!!!!

OH YEAH I’M BAD!!!! PURE FUCKING GENIUS BABY!!!!

  3. The Future of Sega:

Instead of trying to hack the PS3 the hard way, try finding a way to run the PS3′s harddrive on a sata cable while plugged into the PS3 and connect it to a computer running linux or windows xp. You’ll need to disable all firewalls for this too work…whoops I said too much :)

Oh please don’t ban me Sony! I won’t exploit the PS3′s “weakness.” lol…

Anyways, personally I never tried this trick hands on because I’m not about to waste my time and money, but it may work.

  4. gunstar:

If ever the PS3 system gets hacked, modded and pirated its back to the PS2 days again and Nintendo’s and Microdoft’s nightmare will become a reality once more. Where quality will be met with a jump in quantity.
But for the PS3 I prefer it like Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s untarnished and undefeated record.

  5. gunstar:

speaking of piracy…. I already watched Halo: Reach’s Ending on YouTube.

What a tragic way to end it in all points.

  6. Roca.:

I think Sony will let them get away with it for a while because it will help sell PS3 and then they will ban them. It’s the same strategy MS use, they do they ‘yearly’ banning close to when a high profile title is about to hit the shelves.

  7. lock_down:

As I understand it, it’s not really piracy as it is code stolen from Sony to make the PS3 think it’s a dev machine.

I would imagine that gives Sony the upper hand in fighting this, as they know what code the PS3 will be using for this to work.

I think as Digital Foundry suggested, the sheer complexity of the PS3 security systems mean Sony will probably always be one step ahead once they get this fixed.

  8. CAD:

So basically it’s better to have a hackable system because you’ll sell more consoles in the long run. LOL Well it’s working for Nintendo and Microsoft. Why doesn’t it work for the PSP?

  9. Roca.:

The PSP has more units sold worldwide than the 360..

  10. ncaissie:

“The PSP has more units sold worldwide than the 360..”
    LOL

  11. Barnabe Jones:

The PSP is still selling really well in Japan. I think it’s just everywhere else that’s slowed down.

It actually has a really solid lineup with: Kingdom Hearts, VC2, The 3rd Birthday, etc.

  12. Ultima:

    TFOS rofl!

  13. SW:

“when I studied Applied Sciences Information Technology”

Sounds like you dropped out after the first day.

  14. The Future of Sega:

Oh you have jokes now SW? No actually I switched majors because I.T. is extremely boring. I’m too cool to sit around computers all day :-) I have something called, a LIFE. L….I….F….E, life!

I’ll admit it’s fun to hack, program, rewrite shit, trace ip addresses, create worms and viruses, packet sniffing, etc, but I’m more of a social person.

I need face to face contact to survive :-) If I were Tom Hanks lost on a island for 4 years with “Wilson”….I would’ve died like in 12 hrs!! lol

I.T. is a good field but be aware that social contact is highly limited.

Speaking of lost has anyone watched the entire series of Lost? I’m confused are all the people dead trapped in hell or are they just daydreaming of their previous lives?

I’ve never watched a show where the plot is just scattered all over the place. The directors of lost must have been drunk off of Bei Jing beer :-)

….And here it is I thought Pulp Fiction was bad…Sorry, I’m not going to insult my intelligence to shows like that :P

If there’s no logic or sequential time sequence, I’m not watching it.

Based on your posting style I would’ve guessed you don’t even have public hair yet…

So does anyone always see a guy sitting on the can when they come to blorge because of this article?

I suppose it could be some kind of deep desire for the bathroom. Or a for a mon on the toilet O_o

  17. The Future of Sega:

^^^public hair?? you mean pubic you sack of shit. And…what?? No I’m not going to insult my intelligence reading the rest of your non-logical post.

There’s no satirical sense from it at all except for the beginning. Sitting on a can?? Wow…

Hey SW, why did the woman cross the road….never-mind that, what the fuck is she doing out of the kitchen?

Do you see how stupid that is? It makes no sense just like your post :-)

    Um anyways….

  18. The Future of Sega:

Twilight is a GIRL!!??? NO SHIT!!! lol. I had no idea! haha. I thought she was guy…a weirdo guy who goes by the name of Twilight.

I mean what kind of moron goes by the name of Twilight :P lol just kidding.

  19. SW:

I’m not sure what you said, but I bow to you. You win.

Put in my mouth what you please, Ill take it gladly.

  20. The Future of Sega:

LMFAO Sw you crack me up :P We should all have a Halo Reach lan party on Xbox Live towards the end of the year. Everyone from Gamerblorge is invited :_)

Don’t drink the Kool-aid at Sega’s house. You’ll end up getting date-raped. at least that’s what Ivan told me. ;)

  23. Rhino:

Anyone who buys this thing deserve to have their bank accounts emptied. What a bunch of fucking morons.

@CAD “So basically it’s better to have a hackable system because you’ll sell more consoles in the long run.” It works for MS you fucking moron. Remember when MS went of a banning rampage when MW2 was coming out? How many of those fucking morons went out and bought another console?

Of course your don’t want to see that cause your eyes were obscured by Greenberg’s ball sacks.

  24. Liquid:

LMAO. . .rhino’s posts crack me up!

  25. Roca.:

    @CUM

Lamest come back I’ve ever seen.

  26. The Future of Sega:

Lmao @ date raped. Drink the dark kool-aid from my cauldron fellow earthlings :) muhahaha….muha I’m getting to old for this…

This may be an off topic subject but with all the 3d and 4d technology it’s only a matter of time before the adult industry incorporates the same technologies in their business ;)

Imagine seniors in high school inviting the hottest chicks in high school to a 3d movie….The ladies are properly seated while all the guys head outside with a secret video camera recording.

The 3d movie starts off highlighting schools events, pepper alleys, football trophies, championship games etc….

But then…right towards the end of the movie all of the senior males appear on screen and say “You’ve just been PUNK’D bitch!!!.”

They then expose themselves on screen, and fake cocks point out of the chairs and squirt the ladies.

LOL NOW THAT WOULD BE THE FUNNIEST HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR PRANK E-V-E-R!!!!

    3D bukakke ;) LMFAO

  27. Ultima:

tfos lol you crack me up, its like if you just had 20 grams of cocaine or 100 redbulls lol

  28. Rhino:

TFOS man, you’re gotta get out more…you’ve put way too much thought into that.

Though I did read somewhere about a woman in the states reckons she went to a 3d porn movie and came out pregnant!

    Stupid people crack me up.

  33. Roca.:

On Monday August 30th Playstation Network will be undergoing maintenance from 8am to 9pm. that’s right 13hr maintenance.

can this be because of the hack? 13hrs is a long period of time. Sony must be up to something…

  34. twilight:

    The Future Of Sega,
    Lol.
It’s funny because most people think I came up with the name from the movie. I wasn’t thinking about the movie at the time that I came up with the name. Actually, I came up with the name from one of my favorite metal albums.

  35. The Future of Sega:

Metal albums eh? Hmmm ever heard of KMFDM, Buckethead, George S. Clinton, The Mars Volta, Breaking Benjamin, Alex Van Halen, or Swollen Members?

  36. The Future of Sega:

    Uh anyways, let’s move on…
